He turns into Dr. One Night Stand, and I’m not sad about it.

Apparently Dr. Africa got his brother to fill in on our date, and now I work at the same hospital as the guy I got naked with on Saturday.

Tate

Macy Carmichael has been my friend with mind-blowing benefits for a long time now. But, I’ve been craving more from her. More than she’s ready to give.

When my siblings book me on an all-inclusive cruise, I jump at the idea of a free vacation and a chance to get away for a while. Unfortunately, my meddling older sister left out a few important details—like the name of the cruise. Love at Sea. Is she for real?

If that’s not bad enough, she signed me up for a variety of activities and makes me promise that I’ll take part in every single one. She also failed to mention that she convinced Macy to book the same cruise.

Imagine my surprise when she sits down across the table from me during the speed dating event I didn’t even want to attend. All bets are off. I’ll be damned if some other man is getting close to what’s mine.

But when my best friend with toe-curling benefits, Tate Thorne, shows up during the speed dating event, I know I’m in trouble. No matter what I do, it always comes back to him.

Maybe away from the hustle and bustle of our small town, we can finally explore something more. That is, if I can finally let go of all the “rules” of our previous arrangement.

“I’m not going to apologize.”

Of course, she isn’t, but she could have at least said “hello” when she answered the phone. I guess she lost her manners as well as her fucking mind.

“What the hell were you thinking, Taryn? A singles cruise?” I ask, putting the phone on speaker and tossing it onto the bed. Might as well unpack while I talk to her. There’s more space in my cabin than I thought there would be, and I’m happy I don’t have to live out of suitcases for the next week.

When I got to my cabin and looked at the itinerary for the week, I realized we’ll be spending the next two days at sea. This is my last chance to confront my sister before we set sail, and this conversation needs to happen. It can’t wait until I get home. I’m irritated and I don’t want the bad vibes ruining my vacation if I don’t talk to her about it.

My dear older sister apparently took it upon herself to not only book me on a singles cruise, but to plan most of my week for me as well. My shore excursions are already booked at all three ports. She even made dinner reservations on my behalf for a couple of nights.

The one thing on this ship she should have known I would be interested in is the tattoo studio. She could have at least got me on the books while she was at it, but no, I took care of that myself as soon as I realized it was an option.

“You’re a single guy and you need a vacation,” she replies after a minute of silence. That’s all she says, as if it explains everything.

“Taryn,” I growl.

“The why doesn’t matter, Tate,” she says with a sigh. “You’re on an oversized party boat and you’re getting ready to sail to the freakin’ Caribbean. I don’t see a down-side.”

“You wouldn’t,” I mutter, shoving an empty suitcase under the bed.

“What are you doing?” my sister asks.

“Unpacking.”

I can almost hear her eyes roll at my one-word answer. It’s a sure sign that I’m not happy with her and she can’t stand it.

“Don’t be mad at me, little brother.”

Despite my frustration at the situation, I snort. She may be the oldest, but she and my baby sister are pint-sized compared to me and my brothers. There’s nothing “little” about me.

“I don’t like that you all went behind my back,” I tell her.

“But if we told you, would you have gone?”

I don’t know the answer to that.

“I want to say yes, but I’d probably be lying,” I admit.

Taryn sighs, and I know she hates that she’s upset me. I’m not exactly mad, but I’m not happy about the fact that every single one of my siblings plotted and planned to get me on this singles cruise knowing it’s not something I would have chosen for myself.

“If I promise I had good reasons, would you trust me and try to have a good time anyway?”

Plopping my ass onto the bed next to my other suitcase, I sigh and rub the back of my neck.

“Of course I’m gonna try to have a good time, sis. I just… you’re really not gonna tell me?”

“You’ll figure it out soon enough, and when you do, you’ll forget that you were ever mad.”

The smile I hear in her voice makes my remaining irritation fade. She sounds so sure of herself. I’m dying to know what she’s refusing to tell me, but she’s the most stubborn of all my siblings. I won’t get her to cave and reveal the truth. Not now.

“I’m gonna hold you to that,” I tell her.

“Good,” she says happily. “What are your plans for the rest of the day?”

“You booked everything, so you shouldn’t have to ask.”

“Which is why I know you have nothing going on until tomorrow evening. How are you gonna fill your time? I’ve never been on a cruise. I have to live vicariously through you.”

Chuckling, I get up to finish unpacking while I resist the urge to be a smartass. She could have easily booked the cruise for her and Wade instead of me. I would have even volunteered to babysit. I don’t say it, though.

“As soon as I finish unpacking, I’m gonna plant my ass in the hammock on my balcony and watch the scenery as we set sail.” I hear her sigh. “At least until I get hungry. I mean, I’ll eventually have to go on the hunt for some food.”

“And tomorrow?”

“I’ll worry about that tomorrow.”

Born to shanty Irish on one side and Park Avenue privilege on the other, Laura navigates a turbulent childhood filled with the alcohol-fueled abuse of her volatile father and her mother’s excessive drinking. As the middle child of three girls, she assigns herself the role of her mother’s protector, who dies when Laura is thirteen, leaving her heartbroken and adrift.

Nothing however seems to assuage her emptiness and her sense of loss. Eventually, she marries a caring man and has a loving daughter. It is only at the end of her life and by way of an unusual and unexpected turn of events that she is finally able to make peace with herself, to let go of the feeling that she never really grieved, and said goodbye to her beloved mother, and to appreciate that though we work at love and acceptance, sometimes the most wonderful experiences in our lives come in unanticipated and unsought ways.

“You like hockey?” Brodie asked.

“That’d be a no.”

“I’m not sure you’re gonna make it here, then,” Wind said with a laugh.

“I’ll survive. I’m a professional new student,” she said.

“Nothing fazes me anymore, except cars ramming into me, maybe.”

“You play sports?” Wind asked.

“I run track.”

“What events?”

“Open 100, 4x100, sprint medley, and long jump. But the 4x100 is my jam.”

My ears perked up at the mention of those events, and I glanced at Wind.

“Thought that might get your attention.” Wind gave me a crooked grin. “Those are Becca’s events, right, Preach?” I nodded. Becca Scott was the senior on the team, class valedictorian, and a wicked-fast runner. No way was Grace going to come take over.

“Meaning…” Grace said.

“The 4x100 is Becca’s team. They took sectionals last year,” I said.

“Wait, though. Aanya’s sister, Maira, graduated. There’s an opening,” Brodie said.

“Sweet,” Grace said. “Well, if I can run with this stupid thing on.”

“Did they say how long you have to wear it?” Wind asked. “You’re right handed?”

“Yep. Right handed. Taking notes at school is going to be awesome.” Her voice dripped with sarcasm as she mimed typing one letter at a time with her left hand. “As for how long, they just gave me ‘doctor speak’ and ‘best-case scenario’ garble. I’m leaving for basic training as soon as school gets out.” She held up her splinted arm. “That is, if this doesn’t screw up my leave date.”

“Sweet. Army?”

“Air Force. Third generation,” she said.

“Very cool.” He elbowed me. “Preach and his 4x100 team took sectionals last year. They’re favorites to get to State this year.”

I wasn’t sure I was going out for track yet, but I hadn’t told anyone that. I kind of just wanted to stay home and eat Oreos, but Mom wasn’t having any of that. She’d kicked my butt out the door for school this morning without any qualms.

“Great… Not only have I had the joy of getting hit by you, but I’ll also get to run track with you?” This girl was like the queen of sarcasm.

Wind chuckled.

“It’s not like I tried to hit you!” I said it a little louder than I’d planned.

“Shit,” she said.

“What?” I checked over my seat, and she was leaning forward.

“Dropped my phone again!”

The sight of her injured hand resting against the seat as her good hand patted the floor sent a wave of guilt slicing through my chest. I had on my own purple cast, but seeing the brace on her hand…I’d done that to her. I’d hit her. I’d put her in pain.

But why was I worrying about her? I might not be able to play hockey again because of the accident. My heart hammered in my chest, and I gulped through the emotion about to choke me.

What if the second opinion didn’t go well?

What would I do?

No. It’ll go fine. Everything’ll be fine.

Grace looked up at me, wide blue eyes ripping right through me. Her auburn hair framed her face. Her jaw was set. Long eyelashes shadowed her eyes, and she had high cheekbones. Her square jaw, and how she handled herself at the car wreck, told anyone near her that she was strong. Confident.

And she was gorgeous. As in model-worthy beauty. Even with the scowl that overtook her features as she leaned back into her seat, now holding her phone. She held my gaze with such intensity, I had to look away.

Wind steered the Jeep into the school lot. Finally, I had to get out of this car like now.

The second he put the gear into park, I was out the door.

“Preach!” Wind yelled over the roof. “Get her door, man.”

I slung my bag over my shoulder as I made my way around to her side. I yanked open her door, and she ambled out of the Jeep. As awkward as she was handling that backpack, she was a righty for sure.

Cue the ping of guilt.

“Well, wasn’t that a fun little ride to school,” she said as she slammed the door shut.

“It’s no picnic for me, either,” I said, striding ahead of her.

“Yeah, well, let’s lay down a few rules here, buddy.” She shoved the back of my shoulder, and we came to a stop. Wind laughed, then coughed and looked away as he loitered a few feet ahead of us on the sidewalk leading to the front of the school.

“You’re my ride, and that’s it. If you see me during school or out in town, don’t talk to me. As a matter of fact, don’t even look at me. And no texting at all unless it’s ride related.”

She was laying down rules? As in…rules I had to follow? Standing to my full height, I stared her down. I was about six feet, and her forehead came up to right below my chin, so that made her about five foot five or so if I had to guess.

“Got it?” she asked. “Or should I write it on a bumper?”

About the Author

Irene Wittig was born in Rome days after its liberation, to a Viennese Jewish mother who’d found a modicum of safety in Italy. Memories of her Viennese family and the fellow refugees and people displaced by war that she grew up with in New York lie at the core of her novel ALL THAT LINGERS. She absorbed their stories of loss, of difficult decisions and survival against the odds, of rebuilding lives, even of triumph. She came to understand how much of the past lingers for everyone who suffers loss and injustice, and how it manifests itself in sorrow, anger, the loss of trust and even faith. Yet resilience is proof that hope lingers as well for without it the struggle would never be worthwhile.
