Review: When Women Ruled the World: Six Queens of Egypt by Kara Cooney

When I first came across this book, my curiosity immediately knew I had to read it based on my fascination with ancient Egypt. Even though this book was interesting to read, I was really disappointed on the content. You can tell the author put some time into the subject but much of it was based on theories, speculations and uncertainty. The uncertainty formed through inferences based on what information was available but the problem with that is - to what degree is it 100% factual. I know, we weren't there and based on little information that is available we can only infer but some aspects of the book I'm on the fence about. Some areas seem overly sensationalized but who really knows. I guess for me, I was expecting to dive into this book taking away some rich appreciation for these six women because that title just spoke to me. I was just so frustrated with the male dominance in the book and their history. I'm not saying that they shouldn't have been a part of the book but it felt like the role the women played seemed to support the history of the men rather than highlight their unique role and how they ruled. I wish it had been the other way around given them a bigger voice in the book.

Overall, it was an interest read despite my takeaways. It definitely has inspired me to do some reading further on these women and hope that over time more can be discovered about them.

Review: Truth or Dare: A Bayfield High Romance by Madeleine Labitan

This book was ridiculously short. It was only around 100 pages. And unfortunately, I had not read the summary so I was unaware that it was a novella; I thought it was a full book.

In retrospect, I would have liked for it to be longer. Especially, in turns of the romance between Kenzie and Sean. Although they have known each other for several years, I do believe that readers should be given a teeny little bit more backstory about the two and a chance to see their relationship develop. They have such an interesting and fun dynamic.

In essence, their whole relationship is them pulling pranks on each other. That alone has so much potential. If completed correctly and fleshed out more, that dynamic could create a fun, lighthearted book. But again, this is a short book, so it barely scratched the surface.

I will admit that although there was barely any backstory at all and that I have no sense of real connection to the characters, both Kenzie and Sean seemed likable. And I would be willing to read a full novel about them.

Final Analysis

Truth or Dare has potential to be a fun YA book , but unfortunately, it is limited by the page number.

Review

There are no words to capture the beauty of this book. Actually, I didn’t want to take it out of the plastic. The weight of the book gave me chills with anticipation for the exciting visual journey I was about to experience.

Let me tell you, for all you people out there that want to have everything online, this is definitely one that you want to touch, flip through and experience. Pictures are worth a thousand words but these pictures capture the essence of the footprints and foundations of our infinite possibilities.

Maps, photos, graphic atlas of the world transport us to some of the most beautiful places. Some reminders of the effects of the environment. I have a new appreciation for the world. I felt like National Geographic brought the world into my home. They have extraordinary references and break everything down where it’s comprehensive.

Subject areas cover the World that go into detail about physical evolution, cultural influences, weather, people, geology and agricultural subsistence to name a few. It covers the continents, pole and space. There is no stone unturned here. If they can get to it, it is here. We get facts and info on the flags. Not to mention a great appendix and index for reference.

Overall, I can’t stop raving about how wonderful this was. The visuals were outstanding but the information you learn is really informative. Who knew you could have so much fun with an atlas. It’s a treasure that everyone should add to your reference collection at home, not too mention a great resource for the kids. Make sure you grab a copy!

Review: Becoming Mrs. Lewis by Patti Callahan

Summary

In a most improbable friendship, she found love. In a world where women were silenced, she found her voice.

From New York Times bestselling author Patti Callahan comes an exquisite novel of Joy Davidman, the woman C. S. Lewis called “my whole world.” When poet and writer Joy Davidman began writing letters to C. S. Lewis—known as Jack—she was looking for spiritual answers, not love. Love, after all, wasn’t holding together her crumbling marriage. Everything about New Yorker Joy seemed ill-matched for an Oxford don and the beloved writer of Narnia, yet their minds bonded over their letters. Embarking on the adventure of her life, Joy traveled from America to England and back again, facing heartbreak and poverty, discovering friendship and faith, and against all odds, finding a love that even the threat of death couldn’t destroy.

In this masterful exploration of one of the greatest love stories of modern times, we meet a brilliant writer, a fiercely independent mother, and a passionate woman who changed the life of this respected author and inspired books that still enchant us and change us. Joy lived at a time when women weren’t meant to have a voice—and yet her love for Jack gave them both voices they didn’t know they had.

At once a fascinating historical novel and a glimpse into a writer’s life, Becoming Mrs. Lewis is above all a love story—a love of literature and ideas and a love between a husband and wife that, in the end, was not impossible at all.

Review

Becoming Mrs. Lewis, a historical fiction inspired by the life of Joy Davidman and her “relationship” with C.S. (Jake) Lewis. Fascinated by the person who became the spiritual & emotional muse to some of his most revered work, Becoming Mrs. Lewis delve more behind and gave a voice to a woman who had more to offer than being overshadowed by her famous husband.

Rooting from her fascination with Lewis at a young age along with piqued curiosity of who Joy was as a person, the author felt compared from their story to explore further. Sorting through what has been written over the years, this book rooted in fiction, touched upon the challenges she experienced at that time being a woman faced with the dutiful societal obligations versus her desire to be a writer, her life as a mother and her complicated relationship with Lewis.

So refreshing reading a strong female character, especially one that is progressive for her time. Resourceful and resilient, the strength that she clung to to endure the obstacles of the abuse of her first husband, her medical challenges and as you read the obstacles that came her way with her health, family and personal struggles, she found purpose and life through her friendship with Lewis.

Now, as lovely as their story developed, it drove me insane because I’m on the fence about the progression of their friendship/relationship. I’m torn because they developed a really genuine friendship through their correspondence and once a series of events happened that opened the door for something to happened to go further, we don’t experience what could’ve been until much later. I felt like, what we experienced in the end, I wish happened sooner because at least then they would experience what ends up happening in a different place. Trying not to give away anything but the wait for the walls to come down seemed forever. All in all, it was worth the wait because it showed the strength of was their true love was and how powerful when you are free from the shackles of your biggest fears how much greater life can be.

Overall, this was a really nice read. There are definitely some trials and tribulations through the experiences in this book of the lives of Joy and Jack. My only plea for selfish reasons is that I wish we could’ve got to have a little more time with Joy and Jack before the end in regards to the transition of their friendship but that’s the beauty of a fiction novel. We go wherever we are taken. I really enjoyed the other characters and what they brought to the book and their lives. I’d recommend adding this to your list.
