Excerpt: Finding Evan by Lisa Swallow

ABOUT FINDING EVAN

“She killed a part of me – the part which trusts when someone tells you they love you, and allows you to trust that person with your heart.”

Ness and Evan return to Leeds from Europe, and begin their new life together. But the past Evan has buried for years resurfaces and threatens their future.

After fifteen years, Evan doesn’t want any contact with the woman who abandoned him, but is unwillingly pulled into his mother’s life by Lucy.

Feeling pushed aside by Ness’s focus on her studies and new friends, Evan can’t confide in Ness about what’s happening. This return to his old behavior adds more distance to their relationship. When Ness’s new friend Ollie picks up the pieces because Evan is away, Evan’s insecurities threaten their relationship further.

Ness becomes aware of Evan’s situation, and she questions whether he will ever be able to break his ties to those dragging him down. If he can’t put himself first, and live the life he wants, she is unable to see how their relationship could work. In return, Evan struggles with Ness’s inability to get close to people, and her distance pushes him further away.

The decision about the future of the relationship is taken out of their hands - by something that could end things between Ness and Evan forever…

NESS

“Do you know what day it is?” he asks.

“Sunday?”

Something amuses him; he’s fighting down a smile. “Today a year ago?”

“A year ago…” His words click into place. The first time we came here. Crap. Typical Evan remembering that. “Oh.”

“You forgot!” He gasps in mock-horror and clutches his chest. I’m sure my cheeks turn pink.

“I did. Sorry.” I’m so busy that most of the time I don’t know what day of the week it is.

“Hmm. Well, I was going to take you on a picnic, but the weather’s too bloody cold. And I think it’s going to snow.”

“I’m glad you didn’t.”

Evan pulls a package from his pocket, a small, flat square box. “I wanted to mark the occasion. I bought this before…well, the fight. So it means more giving this to you now.”

Now I feel bad. “Evan…”

Evan shifts his gaze back to the box. “Open the present.”

I unwrap the purple tissue and pull out the necklace inside. On a long silver chain is a silver pendant: a painting of a blue butterfly beneath domed glass.

“Why do you make me cry in public?” I say, fighting the tears.

“Why do you cry when I do nice things? I think I need to stop being romantic.” He cocks an eyebrow at me.

The emotion of the night at the club, the fight, the fear we were returning to last year engulfs me and a tear escapes. I put my hand on the back of his head and my lips on his. “Thank you. This is beautiful.”

Evan’s smile softens the recent worry in his face, and he wipes a tear from my cheek with his thumb. “So are you.”

“Sorry I forgot about today.” I turn so he can fasten the necklace.

Evan nips my earlobe. “That’s okay; you can make it up to me later,” he whispers, setting a tingle from my neck to my toes.

Excerpt

“How are you feeling?” I hugged myself, doing my best to stay warm. Daytimes were hot but the nights…weren’t. If lack of hunger didn’t kill us, the swinging temperatures would.

Galloway glanced away. “I’m fine.”

“Would you tell me if you weren’t?”

A flicker of amusement. “Probably not.”

“Such a man.”

“I would’ve expected a worse name than that.”

We made eye contact. My heart became a stupid pinwheel. “Oh? What should I call you?”

He shrugged. “I dunno. Idiot? Douche-bag? Those are two.”

I let the joviality hover, enjoying the simplicity. “I don’t think either of those suit you.”

His voice switched to an intoxicating murmur. “What do you suggest then?”

Turning to face him, I cocked my head. I used it as an excuse to stare at him. Stare at his dark brown hair curling over his forehead, the pink sunburn on his nose, and his perfectly formed lips.

My stomach fluttered as his gaze dropped to my mouth.

Everything tightened. My muscles, my core, my heart.

I wanted to bridge the gap between us. I wanted to wrap myself around him, and in turn, have his arms wrap around me, stealing reassurance that tomorrow would be a better day.

Joking disappeared as we stood, totally silent, utterly immobile, neither breaking the spell. It was unbelievably stupid to get caught up in desire, but in that stolen moon-sleeping moment, reality vanished and I indulged in guilty, desperately needed pleasure.

Kiss him.

Galloway sucked in a breath as I swayed closer.

I didn’t touch him.

No hands or arms or fingers.

Just closed the distance, stood on my toes, and pressed my lips to his.

He froze.

I froze.

The world froze as our lips joined, and I forgot what came next. I forgot because every thought in my head erupted into a thousand pieces of confetti.

His lips, oh…

They were so warm and firm and masculine and…

He tilted his head ever so slightly, the tip of his tongue caressing me. His touch wasn’t a seduction more of a question.

What are you doing?

I’d kissed him. It was up to me to decide how the kiss would morph.

Did I kiss him in thanks? In friendship? In desperation for everything I might never see again? Or did I kiss him in lust? In attraction? In hopes of finding my rules on friendship could be stretched to something more?

Galloway bit back a groan as I parted my lips, accepting everything I couldn’t articulate. His hand swooped up, capturing the back of my neck. His fingers tightened around my nape, pulling me harder against his mouth.

The possessive pressure undid me; I swiped my tongue into his wet warmth.

And that was it.

He snapped.

His crutch thudded softly to the sand as his arm wrapped tightly around me, lifting me off my feet. A few hops and hobbles and my back wedged against the umbrella tree, my front bowing under the hard lines of his body.

I gasped as his fingers hooked around my hair, tugging my head back, kissing me harder.

Oh, God.

He was everywhere at once. Kissing me with an intensity I worried would devour me.

Don’t stop.

His hands ran down my body only to recapture my face. Kissing me harder, faster, wilder.

Wait…

I clung to him, letting him do what he wanted because it gave me the freedom to live in sensation.

Stop.

I couldn’t stop.

My lips danced with his; our tongues fought and licked.

Stop!

Lust crushed everything in its path. I melted as Galloway grabbed my thigh and hitched it over his hip. I arched my back as his hand skated to my breast. I moaned as—

“Wait!” I pushed him away, panting hard.

He growled as I removed his fingers from my nipple. The sharp jolt of liquid pleasure almost made me give in. But this wasn’t real life. This wasn’t some holiday. This was serious.

This can’t happen.

Ducking away from the cage of his arms, I did my best to straighten my hair. Conner and Pippa still slept (thank God) and I rubbed my lips to rid the electrical current left by his kiss.

Galloway breathed hard. “What was that?”

I paced in front of him. “I—I don’t know.”

“You kissed me, remember?”

“I know I did.”

“Then why did you stop?”

“Just because I kissed you doesn’t mean I was going to sleep with you.”

“Oh, no? You were pretty keen on the idea a few seconds ago.”

The heat throbbing in my core rapidly switched to indignation. “Wow, your ego’s pretty big, you know that?”

“That’s not the only thing that’s big.” He winked.

“Really? You’re going to treat this like a sleazy pickup?” Infuriation was a smoking fire in my chest. “That’s low, Galloway.”

“What do you want? An apology for something I didn’t start?” His jaw ticked. “Look, I’m aware that there are things about me that aren’t…smooth. A lot of me is riddled with flaws. But that kiss…it wasn’t one of them. That kiss—” He cut himself off, whistling under his breath. “That kiss was the best damn kiss I’ve ever had.”

Holing up in their respective corners, a battle of wills ensues. Who will be the first to blink…or give in to their off-the-charts chemistry and decide to make this unorthodox living arrangement a little more permanent?

Excerpt

Shannon, and Chloe Arish bobbed on a raft just off the western shore of County Kerry, Ireland. They had been marched, against their will, to the edge of the cliff, and then magically transported to the raft. Rory, head of his clan, shook his fist at the little bastards dancing and laughing on the cliff above them, right next to his clan’s, now fully exposed, ancient castle. “You can’t do this! Our people have coexisted for centuries. You’re violatin’ the treaty signed by our ancestors,” he roared. Shamus, the most gleeful of the three redheaded leprechauns, yelled back, “We don’t know who signed it. We weren’t there. Maybe the dragons forged our ancestors’ signatures.” “Why would they do that?” Chloe yelled. “We were protectin’ each other. Your people with your magic and our clan with our might.” “Ha! Look who’s high and mighty now,” Shamus called back. “This is the same as murder!” Chloe yelled. “You know damn well this raft won’t make it across the ocean. And look what you’re doin’ to me poor sister.” She pointed to Shannon, who was lying prostrate on the lashed logs, sobbing. The bastards hadn’t even let her say good- bye to Finn, her intended. Lucky elbowed Shamus. “She has a point.” “About a cryin’ sister? Who cares?” “Not that. About the murder part.”

Clancy stroked his red and gray beard. “We should give them a worthy craft and enough food so they don’t starve.” Shamus’s delight faded fast. “You’re not goin’ soft on these thieves, are you? They took your gold!” Clancy leaned in close, but Rory’s superior hearing picked up what he thought was an admission of doubt. “We didn’t take your damn gold!” he shouted at the leprechauns. “You did,” Shamus insisted. “Who else but a dragon would covet our treasure?” Rory set his hands on his hips. “Oh, I don’t know… Everyone?” Clancy finally addressed his brothers. “They should be kept alive. If we don’t find the gold in their keep, we may have to question them some more.” Lucky nodded. “I agree.” Suddenly the dragons found themselves on a fishing trawler, probably large enough to make it across the sea if the weather was perfect the whole way. “There. Now they have safe transport and all the fish they can catch,” Clancy said. Shamus let out a defeated sigh. “All right. I guess that covers our arses.” “Speaking of arses,” Rory yelled. “What do you little shites expect us to do for money if we land somewhere? Are we to sleep on the docks and starve while we look for work?” Lucky said, “Certainly not.” He turned to Shamus. “There are women aboard.” Shamus rolled his eyes. “Fine.” A dozen plastic cards rained down on the dragons, bouncing off their heads.

Excerpt: More Than a Feeling by Sara Richardson

About MORE THAN A FEELING

STOP RUNNING . . .AND START FALLING

For Ruby James the Walker Mountain Ranch is her safe haven. Here in Aspen, Colorado, she can finally build a quiet life for herself without fear of her old one rearing its ugly head. Or so Ruby thinks. Any single woman would be happy to indulge a tall, dark, and curious cop-but the closer Ruby gets to him, the closer she gets to losing her newfound peace.

Police officer Sawyer Hawkins is no stranger to secrets. He's ready to leave town for good until a security threat brings him back to Walker Ranch, and Ruby's gorgeous green eyes soon have him second-guessing his decision to go. Her kindness and quiet strength awaken feelings he'd thought long buried, even as her reluctance to talk about her past worries him. The cop in Sawyer only wants the truth-but the man in him wants Ruby in his arms forever..

Excerpt

“So you’re not mad at me?” He inched closer to her, hunger growing inside of him. “Even about last night? Because I’d never hurt you. I didn’t want you to walk away from me. That’s all.”

A shadow of smile crossed her face. God those lips. Those beautiful lips. “I know,” she said again, her voice low.

His eyes were lost in hers. That hunger grew. He suddenly felt empty, like she was the only thing that could fill him. “We’ll make sure the kids still have a great time. Trust me, now that this is out of the way, we can move on,” he murmured, this time tracing his finger down the delicate line of her jaw.

“I trust you,” she whispered, leaning into him.

And that did it. He couldn’t be apart from her anymore. He couldn’t behave…not with her chest against his, her lips so close…

Sawyer covered her mouth with his and Ruby threaded her hands into his hair, pressing her body into his, her lips working him over with the same desperation that flowed through him.

He moaned against her skin, powerless to keep his desire for her to himself. He’d had a taste of her, but it wasn’t enough. Every time he touched her, every time he kissed her, the intensity escalated, and now the need for more drove into him hard and fast, knocking him over the cliff of restraint. “I need to see you tonight,” he growled. “Away from everyone else.” Away from prying aunts and hyperactive kids, even though they were great and all.

“Yes.” She panted against his mouth, gripping his shirt in her fists and tugging him closer, as though she had been caught in the same current he was. It was swift and breathtaking, and he knew they were both going down.

“My place or yours?” he managed to ask before her tongue slipped into his mouth and sent another hot rush of blood south.

“Yours.” Ruby gasped, clawing at his back like she wanted to climb up his body and wrap her legs around him the way she had on the porch swing that night.

Didn’t have to tell him twice. Lifting her into his arms, Sawyer kissed her as deep and hard as he’d wanted to for days, letting his lips and tongue and the way his hands held her ass, say the things neither one of them had found the courage to say…

Praise

“In Joanna Stafford, Bilyeau has given us a memorable character who is prepared to risk her life to save what she most values.” (Deborah Harkness)

“Nancy Bilyeau’s passion for history infuses her books and transports us back to the dangerous world of Tudor England. Vivid characters and gripping plots are at the heart of this wonderful trilogy, and this third book will not fail to thrill readers. Warmly recommended!” (Alison Weir, author of The Marriage Game: A Novel of Queen Elizabeth I)

“A rip-roaring Tudor adventure from Nancy Bilyeau! Novice nun turned tapestry weaver Joanna Stafford returns to the court of Henry VIII. She’s that great rarity of historical fiction: a fiercely independent woman who is still firmly of her time. A mystery as richly woven as any of Joanna’s tapestries.” (Kate Quinn, author of Lady of the Eternal City)

“The Tapestry takes its history seriously, but that doesn’t stop it from being a supremely deft, clever and pacy entertainment. This is Nancy Bilyeau’s most thrilling – and enlightening – novel in the Joanna Stafford series yet.” (Andrew Pyper, International Thriller Writers Award winner of The Demonologist and The Damned)

“A master of atmosphere, Nancy Bilyeau imbues her novel with the sense of dread and oppression lurking behind the royal glamour; in her descriptions and characterizations . . . Bilyeau breathes life into history.” (Laura Andersen, author of The Boleyn King)

“In The Tapestry, Nancy Bilyeau brilliantly captures both the white-hot religious passions and the brutal politics of Tudor England. It is a rare book that does both so well.” (Sam Thomas, author of The Midwife’s Tale)

“In spite of murderous plots, volatile kings, and a divided heart, Joanna Stafford manages to stay true to her noble character. Fans of Ken Follett will devour Nancy Bilyeau’s novel of political treachery and courageous love, set amid the endlessly fascinating Tudor landscape.” (Erika Robuck, author of Hemingway’s Girl)

“These aren’t your mother’s nuns! Nancy Bilyeau has done it again, giving us a compelling and wonderfully realized portrait of Tudor life in all its complexity and wonder. A nun, a tapestry, a page-turning tale of suspense: this is historical mystery at its finest.” (Bruce Holsinger, author of A Burnable Book and The Invention of Fire)

About the Book

SO MANY COWBOYS...
Shy computer specialist, dog lover, and amateur chef Tina Hayes has a thing for firefighters, but when she travels to the Circle Bar K ranch on family business, the ranch’s cowboys have no trouble persuading her to stay on as their cook. Especially not when she learns that brooding Wyatt McCabe—a man who makes her heart gallop like no one else can—is also a former firefighter.

HOW DOES SHE KNOW HE’S THE ONE?
Wyatt’s sizzling embraces leave Tina breathless. But being surrounded by a passel of smokin’ hot ranch hands can be complicated. With so many cowboys courting Tina all at once, Wyatt must prove to Tina that she belongs with him.

Cheryl’s Tip for Dating a Cowboy

Since we can safely assume that most of you aren’t the type to be at home on the range, here’s a city girl’s tip on the fine art of dating a cowboy:

Not all cowboy hats are made by Stetson. At your earliest opportunity, check the sweatband of his hat for the size and brand so you’ll know what to get him for Christmas, although you really can’t go wrong with a Stetson. That being said, you might do better to get him a shirt. Cowboy hats are a little like bras; some things, you just have to choose for yourself.

Excerpt

“Uh, Tina,” Wyatt began. “Listen, what you said about a massage… That actually sounded pretty good.” He paused, seeming reluctant to admit he needed help and even more reluctant to ask for it. “Think you could…?”

I stared at the bowl of pie dough. I didn’t need to invent a reason why I couldn’t stop what I was doing and rub his sore shoulder for him. But at the same time, I had this itch to get my hands on something other than dough.

And some itches must be scratched.

“Sure. Just let me wash my hands.” I put a plate over the bowl to keep the dough from drying out, then washed and dried my hands. When I turned toward Wyatt, my worst fears were realized.

He’d taken off his shirt and stood facing me, the broad expanse of his muscular chest, lightly dusted with dark, curly hair, fully exposed. “Where do you want me?”

Right here. Right now.

Heat sliced through my pelvis, stealing moisture from my mouth to send it gushing from my core. My attempt to swallow failed utterly. “There at the table is fine.”

He would probably smell bad after being on the road all night and most of the day. Bad smells usually put me off immediately. I figured I was safe. But when I moved closer, he smelled fine. Not freshly showered, perhaps, but nice. “Do you have any ointment to put on it?”

“There’s probably something around here somewhere, but for now, just use a little olive oil.”

I was hard-pressed not to laugh out loud. Getting my hands on a hot, studly cowboy might make my temperature soar, but by the time I’d smeared him with olive oil, he would smell like a salad.

Not sexy at all.

Unfortunately, after dribbling oil on his back and placing my hands on his shoulders, I was forced to revise that assessment. Wyatt would’ve been sexy even if he’d smelled like a barn. And salads, on the whole, were quite tasty.

I squeezed my eyes shut, trying to block out the image of the powerful-looking muscles in his back and shoulders, but I couldn’t hide them from my hands. His hair, although relatively short, curled at the nape. Using the excuse of massaging his neck, I touched it. For some peculiar reason, that affected me even more than touching his skin had done—the gesture was more intimate, somehow.

Eventually, I found the sore spots in his upper back and shoulder and kneaded them hard. Wyatt’s groans and sighs were like candy, enticing me to keep going until I’d thoroughly massaged every muscle in his body. Twice.

After a glance at the clock proved I’d been at it for about twenty minutes, I figured it was time to quit or I was bound to do something really stupid—especially since he was getting to me on a level no real man ever had. Surely twenty minutes was enough. Then again, he wasn’t asking me to stop. If anything, I got the distinct impression he wanted me to keep going forever.

But I had work to do, a pie to bake, and chickens to roast. “H-how’s that?” My voice was hoarse and hesitant, no doubt due to the parched state of my mouth.

Despite his long, shuddering exhale, his throat sounded tight when he spoke. “Good—um, better. Much better. Thank you.”

I took a step back as he got to his feet. “Glad I could help.”

Rather than staring at the floor like I normally did, I made the mistake of tilting my head back and making eye contact. His gaze held mine for a long moment. Once again, what went on behind those enigmatic eyes was anyone’s guess. He certainly wasn’t giving me any clues.

A flick of his brow signaled the end of the interlude. “Well then. I guess I’ll leave you to it.” He slung his shirt over his shoulder. “I might lie down for a bit before dinner.”

All I could do was nod. I waited until his retreating footsteps died away before letting out the breath I was well aware I’d been holding.

I would get used to him eventually.

Yeah, right. Maybe by the time my car was packed and I was two hundred miles down the road.

Men had always made me nervous, but when it came to getting under my skin, Wyatt McCabe took first prize. Closing my eyes, I breathed deeply for a few moments before resuming my task. I still had a lot to do in the next two hours. Letting Wyatt freak me out wouldn’t help get it done.
