Excerpt: Shopping For a Ceo's Fiancee by Julia Kent

We skipped right over the whole fiancée thing and went straight from girlfriend to wife.

At least, I think that’s what happened. I woke up after my brother’s Vegas wedding reception with my luscious girlfriend in bed with me. We’re both wearing wedding rings.

So is her coworker, Josh.

And our Vegas chauffeur, Geordi.

Who the hell am I married to?

Unraveling this mystery will be as difficult as figuring out why Amanda and I are having panic attacks over the thought of being husband and wife.

Or, whoever we’re actually married to.

Oh, ^%$#.

It’s true that what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, with one exception:

If she’s my wife, we’ll make it work.

If she’s not?

I’ll make it happen.

Get the 9th book in Julia Kent's New York Times bestselling romantic comedy series as Andrew and Amanda sort out their wild Vegas night...and the rest of their lives.

Excerpt

Water is my second home. Swimming twice a week keeps me sane. Lap after lap, stroke after stroke, I disappear into the pool at Declan’s place, the one in my apartment building too warm for miles of swimming. You fade into nothing but the differentiated cells of the body when you turn into a machine that reaches, kicks, breathes—and repeats ad infinitum.

Here in the resort's hot spring inside the spa, I reach, I kick, I breathe—and I kiss her until I disappear into the water and Amanda, my own name fading as I become nothing but water and love, tongue and heat, fingertips and pulse. We kiss in the water, my arms steel bands that cage her, our bodies melting in the humid heat of a fake rainforest that contains too much real love.

Releasing her, I wriggle out of my wet pants, kick off my shoes, and swim away, letting the water take me, a simple crawl speeding me to the end of the meandering pool. Designed to look like a naturally-shaped pond, there is no true side, and I misjudge, whacking my hand on the green-painted cement edge.

I can’t do an underwater flip, so I pivot, returning to her, roaring up with a few butterfly strokes designed to cover her with a giant wave of foam.

She’s laughing when I surface, her hair covering her like wet ribbons, her mouth open with joy, eyes wide and amused. I hope her headache’s gone. I hope her hangover has dissolved. I hope we can capture this moment for a few more seconds and laugh together, because it’s the first time in my life that I’ve felt like infinite good exists in the world, and I’m only touching a tiny grain of sand in a vast ocean of it.

“You swim like Michael Phelps!” she gasps.

“Michael Phelps swims like me,” I correct her.

A fit of giggles overcomes her and I watch, cocking my head to catch her at an odd angle, the tiny perspective change an order of magnitude in difference. Luminous and winsome, Amanda’s eyes catch mine, darting between them, as if she’s trying to look at me forever.

I grab her and the brush of her breasts against my bare, wet chest takes my breath away.

“You have the body of a swimmer,” she says, her voice rumbling, making me groan as she nips my earlobe.

“And you have the body of a goddess.” I reach for her and she pulls away, giggling.

“Not here!”

“Why not?”

“We can’t have sex in public!”

I look around. “No one else is here. I own the resort.” I bridge the gap between us and watch her react to my words. Lust and restraint fight for dominance in those lush brown eyes, warm and tempted, her pupils big and open.

“It’s not like we can just lock the door.”

I walk out of the zero-gravity pool and grab the corded phone by the door. Two sentences later, it’s done. A red light on a control panel pops on. Locked.

“Yes,” I say, turning to her with a grin. “We can.”

It’s good to be the king.

I can’t get back to her fast enough, the water welcoming me, the knowledge that we’re alone and will not be disturbed a titillating, erotic secret that makes me so hard, I ache. She’s in my arms and I’m kissing her, bare, wet skin dominating every second, and if I can’t get inside her soon, I’m going to die.

Spotlight: Fast-Pitch Love by Clay Cormany

Genre: YA Romance
Release Date: November 4th 2014
Clean Reads

What does a high school boy do if he thinks the girl of his dreams will be an assistant for the softball team his mother coaches? Easy! He volunteers to be an assistant, too. That's what Jace Waldron does in Fast-Pitch Love. It might be his only chance to make a move on Stephanie Thornapple while her boyfriend is away. But Jace's plans go awry, and soon he faces the double challenge of coaching a team of mischievous preteen girls and learning there is more to romance than physical attraction.

Excerpt

“Come on, Phoebe,” Jace urged. “Get us a run.”

His sister looked small standing by home plate, her head engulfed by her helmet.  She gazed at Jace and grimaced before holding her bat aloft.

The first pitch went inside.  The second was a call strike.  Another inside pitch and then a swing and a miss.

“Strike her out!  She can’t hit!  Strike her out!” the Dragon players cried out to their pitcher.

“Protect the plate,” Martha urged her daughter. “Just try to put the ball in play.”

Jace didn’t want to watch as the next pitch came homeward.  But he did anyway, and what he saw was Phoebe swinging away and making enough contact to send the ball bouncing slowly toward the gap between the pitcher’s mound and first base. As Phoebe took off down the baseline, Corey made a mad dash toward home, and the other two runners also tried to advance.

“Come on, Phoebe, you can beat it out,” Jace shouted.

With arms and legs churning, Phoebe tried to comply.

Realizing her pitcher would not reach the ball soon enough, the Dragon’s first baseman ran forward and scooped it up. Then she pivoted around and ran back toward her base, trying to get there before Phoebe.  When both girls closed to within a few feet of the bag, the first baseman lunged at Phoebe, trying to tag her out.

“Dive for it!” Jace cried.

Phoebe lowered her head and flung herself horizontally with arms outstretched toward the base.  This caused the first baseman to miss the tag, but the girl had enough sense to thrust her foot toward the base in the hope of still getting the force out.  To Jace’s not-unbiased eye, Phoebe’s hand reached the base a split second ahead of the Dragon infielder’s foot.  The umpire, who had moved from behind home plate to within a few feet of where Jace stood, saw it that way, too.

“Safe!” he shouted, crossing his arms two or three times.

The cry of joy from the Valkyries’ side matched the roar of dismay from the Dragons and their fans.  Jace signaled time out and reached down to help Phoebe to her feet.  As he did, the Dragons’ assistant coach brushed by him, charging like an angry rhinoceros toward the umpire.

Praise

"The books has some unexpected twists and turns as the likeable but somewhat hapless Jace grows into a young man who takes responsibility for his life and his choices. Softball aficionados will have a particular affinity for this book because its game descriptions are extensive and detailed. Those who don't know softball will come to like and admire the young protagonist."  Gretchen Hirsch, author and book doctor

"I enjoyed this young adult novel by Clay Cormany. The story told from a guy's perspective made it especially interesting. I think a lot of young women would enjoy seeing romance from a guy's point of view. I also liked that the novel was innocent without gratuitous sex or swear words." Paulita Kincer, author of The Summer of France and Trail Mix

"Like the spin on a fastball, Fast-Pitch Love puts a new spin on the age old boy meets girl phenomenon. And what a wonderful spin it is. Clay Cormany weaves together the twin themes of teenage infatuation and a girls’ softball team. Along the way he does a wonderful job of mixing the excitement of youth sports with the impending showdown between two suitors of the same pretty girl."

The Dane

"Fast-Pitch Love is an unusual coming-of-age story since it's told from the guy's point of view. The characters are likeable and believable; the action well paced. You don't need to be a softball player, or even an athlete, to thoroughly enjoy Fast-Pitch Love."  Louise

“What we’re about to do is scary. Terrifying, even. But we’ve been through things that were just as challenging. Excerpt: Rose Bride by Elizabeth Moss

Hilary Mantel meets Sylvia Day: the final installment in a deliciously erotic trilogy begun in Wolf Bride, set against the sumptuous backdrop of the scandal-ridden Tudor Court by Elizabeth Moss.

SHE’S FALLEN TOO FAR...
Margerie Croft yielded her virginity before her wedding night, and then fled King Henry VIII’s court, knowing she couldn’t marry a man she did not love. Now she is viewed as soiled goods, fit only for the role of a courtier's plaything.

Virgil Elton has heard the wicked rumors, but something about Margerie calls to him. Drawn close despite himself, he invites her to help in his work to restore the king’s flagging health. But as he comes to know her, Virgil discovers beneath the layers of protective reserve a woman who is as intelligent and passionate as she is beautiful. He will stop at nothing to heal the damage the court has inflicted, even if it means falling himself…

Excerpt

Master Elton spoke as though they were alone together, his voice deep and rich, stirring her in some unfathomable way. ‘I must lock up the storage room,’ he told her calmly, ‘but then I beg you will permit me to escort you back to your chamber. The hour is late and a lady should not be wandering the palace corridors unaccompanied.’

There was a growl of dissent from the watching nobles. Yet to her astonishment none of them challenged the doctor’s right to remove her.

Slowly she groped after the truth, though it seemed impossible. These lords were wary of him, though he was merely a physician.

Master Elton was still holding her hand, his strong fingers locked intimately with hers. When she did not reply, he raised his eyebrows, watching her with those dark intelligent eyes that seemed to know precisely what she was thinking – and feeling.

She found her courage again, and with it her voice. ‘I ... I thank you, sir.’

‘My lords, I must beg your pardon for interrupting your sport,’ he said, turning to her attackers. ‘But this lady seems uncomfortable in your company.’

Master Elton drew her out from their silent circle, a look of irony on his face. He bowed to Sir Christopher as the knight shifted to block his way.

‘You look well, Sir Christopher. I am glad.’

Sir Christopher’s mouth tightened, as though that soft emphasis had conveyed some special meaning to him. He glared at the doctor sourly. They were about the same height and build, she realised, though the knight was perhaps a shade taller. For a moment the atmosphere was tense in the narrow space, and she feared for her saviour.

Then the knight shrugged and stepped aside, letting them pass.

‘You may go on your way, physician, and take this creature with you,’ Sir Christopher said. His gaze flicked over her with contempt. ‘No man wants soiled goods anyway. Not even for sport.’

Without another word, the physician led her away into the small gloomy chamber from which he had emerged, taking a moment to bar the door behind him in case the king’s men changed their minds.

She looked about the room. There was a high table crowded with bottles and physicians’ instruments, and a small leather-bound volume lying open beside a candle as though he had been reading before he was disturbed. A doctor’s workshop, Margerie thought, glancing at more bottles arranged in a shadowy alcove. She found herself breathing more easily, for she had only narrowly escaped harm.

Glancing at the open page of the book, she saw it was not a doctor’s journal with a list of medicaments, as she had at first assumed.

    It was poetry. In Latin.

Master Elton turned from the door and fixed her with a hard look. His casual air had dropped away. ‘Do you have a death wish, madam?’

Margerie flushed angrily. ‘I beg your pardon?’

The physician looked her up and down assessingly, taking in every detail of her flushed cheeks and unbound mass of red hair, then the fine silk gown, her thin-soled leather pumps showing beneath. The bodice sat tight about her breasts, for she had been a girl and narrower in the chest when she last wore it at court, and she saw his gaze linger on the creamy flesh there.

No doubt he was wondering if she was a courtesan. Perhaps even considering if he could afford her services on a physician’s wage. She was used to such unpleasant conversations. But for some reason the thought of this man propositioning her left a bitter taste in her mouth.

‘I do not recall seeing you at court before,’ he commented, ‘so I must assume your foolishness tonight was the result of inexperience rather than a wanton desire to be ravished by those courtiers.’

Her lips tightened at this insult. She wanted to speak her mind, tell him exactly what she thought of his misinterpretation of tonight’s events. But she kept silent. This man had just saved her from what would undeniably have been a rape.

He raised dark eyebrows at her silence. ‘Will you give me your name?’

    ‘Margerie Croft.’

His eyes narrowed on her face, suddenly fixed and intent. Heat entered her cheeks as she realised her name was known to him. She ought not to be surprised. Everyone at court knew of Margerie Croft, the infamous whore who had taken young Wolf to her bed, then run off to France with another nobleman, an infirm youth who had died without marrying her, leaving Margerie to earn enough for her passage back to England – as a whore, it was whispered by some.

‘Mistress Croft,’ he said softly, ‘my name is Master Elton. Do you have any idea how dangerous it was to allow yourself to be alone with those men?’

‘You think I allowed that to happen, Master Elton? I was summoned by King Henry tonight so he could ...’ She faltered, seeing the look in his eyes. Caution entered her tone as she finished lamely, ‘So he could speak with me.’

‘I see.’ But his voice had grown cold. She could guess what he was thinking. ‘And afterwards?’

‘Afterwards,’ she repeated, shuddering as she remembering what had followed her abortive interview with His Majesty, ‘they cornered me in one of the royal antechambers. I tried to escape, but they were determined to ...’

‘Make your better acquaintance?’ he suggested.

‘Punish me.’ Margerie lifted her gaze to his, meeting it unflinchingly. ‘I had displeased the king, you see. So they had little fear of reprisals, whatever they might choose to do to me.’

‘You seem curiously unmoved by that prospect.’

‘Merely resigned to my fate. Men rape women. It is the way of the world.’

Something flickered in that level stare. Contempt? Her temper rose. ‘Sir?’

Turning to a nearby shelf, the doctor began to pack away a row of thin-necked bottles into a cloth bag, checking each stopper and label as he did so, his movements careful and precise.

‘No doubt you find me impertinent, mistress?’

    She could not deny it.

‘Forgive me.’ He glanced over his shoulder at her, his smile thin. ‘But your story is, you must admit, a little incredible. What was your crime tonight against His Majesty?’

    ‘That is my business.’

‘Do you remain silent for your own sake or mine? I assure you that I have no intention of becoming embroiled in this affair. But you must know the king’s ways, as all the world does. Perhaps if you had taken some respectable female companion with you to His Majesty ...’

She glared at him, nettled by the suggestion that she was to blame, and he shrugged, continuing to pack away his bottles.

‘I gave you my name, sir,’ she pointed out. ‘I am Margerie Croft. Or are you alone at this court in not knowing my reputation?

Excerpt: The Copula Chronicles by Venessa Kimball

Origin

“An origin is supposed to be the beginning of everything, but I fear it’s the end...for me... for all of us. My name is Jesca Sera, my reality has been pierced and it is with absolute certainty that nothing will ever be the same in our world again. “ ~ Jesca

Jesca’s life is full of averages; average childhood, average family, average part-time job with her best friend while she attends college close to home. Life is predictable, controlled, consistent, just the way she likes it, until the odds of averages turns against her and the oddity that that has remained dormant within her can no longer be contained.

Under the surface, Jesca’s strong-hold with reality is slowly slipping away. The seemingly harmless nightmares of her youth have turned sinister with ill intention and a realness meant to provoke true terror. The minor trick of the eye revealing a shadow or glimmer of light becomes vivid hallucinations intent on terrorizing her. Her fear reaches extremes when her professor’s presence coincides with her losing touch with reality, leaving Jesca questioning his stalking motives or influence on her shifting sanity. Confronting him is the only answer, and when she does, she is faced with an inconceivable explanation as to why her life is turning upside down; her role as a keeper of our world to save humanity from a potentially unstoppably apocalyptic catastrophe. Upon learning her purpose, Jesca is thrust into a new world of guardianship where training to use her new found abilities is the life-blood of survival for her and the tribe of guardians.

About: The Copula Chronicles, Origin, is a roller coaster ride straight into an unreality - speculative, yet plausible. It’s intent on spinning you around in the alternate history of origins of the new world Jesca has been thrust into, theories of genetic engineering and architects of a device meant to create travel within space and time through the cosmos. Make no mistake, your reality will be turned upside down with the techno-thriller plausibilities of what our world and its inhabitants could possess within. When all is said and done, you will find yourself planted in a new reality of weighty urban fantasy with profound thought-provoking conspiracies of the spiritual and scientific link to our existence and what our world may become now that Jesca’s new reality has been set into motion. Strap in for the ride.

Descend

“A descendant of the architect that pierced my reality, leaving me and the others the responsibiity to inherit the earth then save it from those we never fathomed existed among us. My name is Jesca Sera, my reality has been pierced and it is with absolute certainty that nothing will ever be the same in our world again.” ~ Jesca

The uncovered corruption and conspiracy upon our world paired with the impending catastrophic event honed in on our galaxy threatening invasion and evolution of our world lies in the hands of Jesca and the other guardians that have inherited the earth. The corruption of our world is spreading like wildfire, the between allies and enemies are being blurred, and Jesca’s growing attraction to the two men fighting for her heart could leave her vulnerable. Jesca and her fellow guardians’ fortitude is further pressed when their battle for earth takes them to the far reaches of Japan’s Aokigahara Forest, where the mysticism it covets brings weighted supernatural challenges they could never have anticipated. The predestined links she and the guardians share will either keep them safe or send them into a tailspin of sacrifices that may leave one if not all of them threatened.

About: The Copula Chronicles, Descend, pulls you deeper into the inherited reality Jesca and her new found clan of guardians are forced to surrender to in order to attempt salvation for humanity. The reality of genetic manipulation, ancient myths and theories, and the immediate threat of extra-terrestrial abduction and invasion are revealed in this second installment of the Copula Chronicles. Edge of your seat techno-thrilling conspiracies paired with dramatic mystery, suspense, and sacrifices are fulfilled in this spiraling global cataclysm Jesca and the guardians are faced with at every turn.

Ascend

“With the breach of our world by those intent on invading it, a veil has been opened, giving way to the evolution we needed to stop. Now, I must ascend this veil that has released boundless evil into our world. This inheritance I posses is the key to a legacy bestowed to me; one that I have not yet discovered. My name is Jesca Sera. My reality has been pierced and it is with absolute certainty that nothing will ever be the same in our world again.” ~ Jesca

With the guardians attempt to stop the global invasion and apocalyptic evolution of the earth, two of the men in Jesca’s life have made the ultimate sacrifice in a daring attempt to save her from near death and keep the veil, a celestial barrier meant to separate our universe from all others, from remaining open. The fate of Ezra and Nate is dismal unless Jesca, Xander, and the other guardians can find a way to get them back, while destroying the evil that has seeped into our world, and sealing the ethereal veil between our universe and the evil that lie beyond it. As Jesca ascends beyond the veil, malignant illusions meant to turn allies against one another are at every turn in this parallel universe. One truth among the illusions is bestowed to Jesca; the celestial inheritance from her ancestors along with the prophecies of what is to come of the guardians and earth.

About: The Copula Chronicles, Ascend, takes you beyond the veil of our world and into one beholding the supernatural, spiritual, psychological and techno-thrilling futurism in terrifyingly perfect harmony.

LEGACY

“I have returned to an evolved earth. A place I no longer recognize. A self I no longer recognize. My name is Jesca Sera. My reality has been pierced and it is with absolute certainty that nothing will ever be the same in our world again. One thing is certain. I hold the blueprint of our salvation.” ~ Jesca

With Jesca’s return from beyond the veil with Xander, Nate, and Ezra, they are ushered into our evolved world having advanced years since their departure.

The earth’s remaining populous that survived the galactic intersection, the following climatic shifts, and the rigorous genetic manipulation has been stunted by the very beings Jesca and the others encountered beyond the veil. Humankind is being invaded, occupied, and destroyed under their invisible reign. The beings intent? To possess our world and stop Jesca and the other guardians from fulfilling the legacy that could save us all. We are left to hit the ground running upon their return as Jesca brings home new found knowledge of her ancient bloodline and the supernal legacy that has linked her family, the guardians, and the two men she has been torn between throughout her journey. With only Jesca’s visions of what this ancient legacy holds for them, the guardians are depending on the divining glimpses of her ancestry to put them on the path leading to salvation.

The question is, will the stakes be too high and the risk to great for Jesca and the guardians to fulfill their destiny?

About: The Copula Chronicles, Legacy, is the final installment in this edge-of-your-seat urban fantasy, science fiction fused series and Kimball holds nothing back in her arsenal of spine-tingling, mind-boggling, thought-provoking,mystery-seeking, and heart-pounding content.

Origin, Book 1

I sit down at the edge of the glowing pool of water, cross my legs, and lean back in awe. All that is audible is the trickle of water from the fingerlike calcifications above into the water below. The best part is there is no humming, vibrations, or whispering. No looming, heavy, dark shadows. All of a sudden, I hear a crunching of gravel coming closer from a distance. I turn to see Nate entering from one of the cutouts. He stops running and takes his ear buds off as soon as he sees me. His shirt is sticking to his chest, highlighting his pecs, which is a bit distracting as I try to keep my eyes level with his. “Hey.”

Without a second thought, he pulls his shirt off as he tries to catch his breath. Holy mother of God! I divert my eyes back to the pool and pretend his half nakedness isn’t flustering as all hell. “Hi.”

I pick around in the gravel for a small pebble to toss into the pool—a thoughtless distraction to replace the attractive one.

“You noticed it too, huh?”

Is he talking about my nervousness? I feel self-conscious to say the least, but try to play it off. “Noticed what?”

Nate comes closer then sits down next to me, dipping his shirt in the spring and speaks at ease. “The peaceful silence. You noticed it just now, didn’t you?”

“Uh yeah. I did. How’d you guess?”I think back on the abilities we each have. “Is it your telepathy?”

Nate wrings the excess water out of his shirt. “Yeah, I guess. It feels so peaceful and safe.”

Nate pulls his shirt back over his head. I can’t help but watch the ripple of his abs before the shirt covers them.Nate continues to speak, not noticing my hidden ogling. “I noticed the silence when I got away from everyone and started my run. When I saw you sitting there, you looked so—”

His pause makes me glance at him and his heavy stare makes me freeze like a deer in headlights as he speaks slowly. “It just feels so serene, perfect and beautiful.”

Wait, are we talking about the silence or something more now?

He pulls his eyes away from me and looks out into the pool. “Anyway, I thought you might be experiencing it too.”

I find my ability to speak and seek the same pool of water for peace from my racing heart. “Yeah, you’re right. I was enjoying the experience.”
