Spotlight: Christmas at Eden Manor by Noelle Adams

Brie Graves might be jobless, living with her brother, and recovering from a painful break-up, but she's determined to enjoy the holidays. Until the end of the year, she's going to do anything she wants to do, no matter how crazy it might be. Soon, she discovers exactly what she wants--to spend a week with a fascinating, sophisticated stranger. It doesn't matter that she only knows his first name or that he's more than twenty years older than her. After this one week, she'll never see him again.

Cyrus Damon has spent his life making money and holding himself to impossibly high standards. Pressured into taking a vacation in Savannah, he's alone and at loose ends, so he lets himself do something he never would have considered otherwise. He gives in to his attraction to a beautiful, free-spirited, and much-too-young woman. But, after the week is over, he'll once more be the man he's always been, left with nothing but the memory of a woman who made him happier than he's ever been.

He has no idea that when he visits his nephew in a charming bed and breakfast called Eden Manor, he'll find the woman he thought he'd left for good.

When they’d finished the last of the wine and the mousse had been licked clean, Brie put down her spoon and collapsed back in her chair. “Wow. That was probably the best dinner—the best meal—I’ve ever had.”

Cyrus smiled at her, almost fondly. “Good. I’ll tell Gordon you appreciated it.”

“Who decided on the menu and… ambience?”

He arched his eyebrows in amused irony. “It was Gordon. He was very pleased about this dinner, and he might have gone a bit too far in setting the mood.”

Intrigued, Brie felt a little less boneless, so she managed to lean forward, resting her head on one hand. “Really? Does he do a lot of matchmaking for you?”

“He never has before,” Cyrus said with a half shrug. “I was as surprised as you were.”

“Were you really? You acted totally suave, like you have romantic dinners like this all the time.”

“I doubt you’d believe me if I told you how long it’s been since I’ve had a romantic meal of any kind.”

A surge of curiosity banished a lot of her decadent languor. “How long?” she demanded.

Cyrus’s mouth twisted into what might have been a sheepish smile. “I don’t think I’m going to tell you.”

“But I want to know.”

His eyes transformed as he gazed at her. The shift was almost imperceptible, but Brie felt a shudder shape itself in the base of her spine in response to his expression. “Do you always get what you want?” Cyrus continued, his voice throaty, the texture making her shudder even more.

“No,” she admitted. “Almost never.”

“There’s something wrong with a world where such a thing is true.”

It took her a minute to unravel this comment, but when she did she was moved even more. The man didn’t even seem to be trying, but he had the knack for always saying the right thing, for being kind and romantic and civilized, all at exactly the same time.

She’d never believed it was possible before.

She knew she was treading in dangerous waters here. She was on the verge of being swept away by him completely. She wanted to enjoy herself with him this week, but she didn’t want to do something so foolish it would leave her hurt and lonely next week.

She didn’t know this man. Not really. So she could feel a resistance rising inside her, at the same time as the deep attraction.

She needed to change the mood between them. Quickly.

“Let’s walk some more,” she suggested lightly. “I could use it after such a meal.”

He stood up and took her hand to help her out of her seat. Then he didn’t let her hand go as they strolled through the gardens again.

She soon realized her suggestion might have been a mistake. The rich scent of the air, the soft moonlight, and the feel of Cyrus’s warm hand quickly went to her head. She felt unsteady, overly warm, and so fluttery she couldn’t take a deep breath.

“God, Cyrus!” she gasped, as an ache of need pulsed through her before she was ready to handle it.

Cyrus had appeared calm, leisurely, at his ease. But he’d evidently been fighting feelings of his own. Her breathless cry seemed to snap his control. He used his clasp on her hand to pivot her around and then slid his free arm around her, pressing her against the length of his body.

His warm, lean strength was exactly what Brie wanted to feel. She freed her hand from his and instinctively twined her arms around his neck. With his hand now free, he used it to cup the back of her head.

“You’re so beautiful, Brie,” he murmured thickly. “So beautiful and… and glowing with life.” His eyes like flames, almost fierce in the moonlight, he leaned his head down to claim her lips.

Excerpt: The Time Traveler’s Christmas by Amy Jarecki

A man’s life can fall apart in an instant…

Tougher than oxhide, Lachlan Wallace can take about anything except a breakup call from his wife two minutes before competing in the Karate Championship of the World. Arriving home with a loss, he agrees to watch his uncle’s cat over the holidays. Or so he thinks—until he awakes on a fourteenth-century battlefield beside a woman fighting for her life.

Never underestimate a woman’s determination…

Taken from her at the age of two, Lady Christina de Moray hasn’t seen her son in thirteen years. While traveling with Robert the Bruce’s army to exchange an English prisoner for the lad, a battle erupts. Losing the fight, Christina is rescued by a mysterious warrior while the English escape with her son yet again.

And never bet against the potency of passion…

Left with no way back to the twenty-first century, Lachlan agrees to help Christina rescue the lad from his English captors. If the heir is not returned by Christmas next, the Bruce will make his decision whom to grant the de Moray lands, including Lady Christina’s hand. Once his duty is fulfilled, Lachlan hopes to discover a way home—as long as he keeps his mind on the goal and ignores his growing love for the spirited woman who gives him her trust—and her heart.

…But Lachlan wasn’t about to give up. Not only his foot, he’d put his entire leg in his mouth, and he wouldn’t leave this night until she was good and sure he’d taken it out. “Go on, open it.”

Christina’s fingers trembled a bit as she pulled the leather thong. “Oh my.” She held the cross nearer and inclined it toward the candlelight. “’Tis exquisite. Where ever did ye find it?”

He took the chain and clasped it around her neck. “It seems your smithy is good for more than hammering iron and pulling teeth.”

“Malcolm made this himself?”

“Yep.” Lachlan admired how the amethyst sparkled against her alabaster skin. “Said he found the amethyst on the battlefield at Stirling Bridge.”

“Imagine that. He never told me he dabbled with jewelry.”

“Do you like it?”

“I absolutely adore it.” She grasped his hands between her palms. “Thank ye.”

He grinned, his gaze falling to her lips. A little pink tongue slipped out the corner of her mouth before she snatched her hands away. “Och, I’m glad ye stopped by this eve, else I would have had to wait until the morrow to give ye your gift. The tanner only finished it this day.”

“Excuse me?” Lachlan twisted his mouth. “It surprised you that I gave you a present, but you had something made for me?”

She held up a finger. “Something most practical for a champion.”

He looked around the chamber, seeing nothing but tapestries, lace and feminine things—no size sixteen boots, no horse saddles. The tanner? “What is it?”

“A moment.” She rose to her feet and headed for the garderobe.

Craning his neck, he tried to peer around her. “Should I come with you?”

“Nay.”

After a bit of rustling, Christina came out holding up a leather couton and grinning like she’d just earned her first karate belt.

“Wow.” Lachlan stood and crossed the floor.

“Ye said ye wanted leather armor and I asked the tanner to fashion a coat that couldna be run through.”

He ran his gaze down the fine tooling. “My God. This is a work of art.” The strips of leather had been stamped with a bold star pattern he’d seen on the de Moray crest over the hearth in the great hall. The stitching was so exact it could have been from a machine, though Lachlan had never seen seams so strong. He worked the thick, reinforced leather panels between his fingers. “It’s perfect.”

Christina beamed, her eyes sparkling. “Try it on.”

After unfastening the plaid at his shoulder, he slipped his arms through and she stepped in and fastened the buckles. “I still think mail would afford ye more protection, but this couton is the next best thing.” She placed her palm in the center of his chest. “And I had the tanner fashion it to protect your legs and…um.” Her gaze dipped with her blush.

Lachlan’s heart thrummed a rapid rhythm beneath her fingertips. “You are a wise woman. And I like the slits over my thighs. They’ll make it easier to walk.” He tilted up her chin with the crook of his finger. “How did the tanner manage to make it fit so perfectly?”

“I remembered your measurements from Roxburgh.”

“You remembered. My word, you are amazing.”

She giggled, but still shook her head. “Who would have kent? Give a man a coat of armor and he’ll think the world of ye.”

He brushed her hair away from her face. It hung down her back in thick waves, the curls around her cheeks making ringlets. “I want you,” he whispered.

Spotlight: Tyranny by Gemma Brocato

One man, one muse, one romance to save the world

Immortal librarian Clio has existed for thousands of years. Her purpose—to influence and inspire mortals. Now as one has inspired her, a battle is mounting between the Muses and a god who care little for the plight of man. A hostile takeover is imminent at Olympus Enterprises.

History professor Jax Callahan is battling his own uncertainties. His previous employer’s refusal to heed his warnings results in a tragic loss of life. Blaming himself, he no longer believes he can make a difference.

Tyranny will stop at nothing to appease her father and succeed in taking over Olympus and the world. To save mankind, Clio must reveal herself as a Muse to Jax, the man she’s fallen in love with. Facing the end of humanity as they know it, she must convince him to trust in the magic of what if. Because failure spells doom for everyone.

Excerpt

God knew, he’d worked for years to get the bureaucratic idiots to hear his ideas. He could have circumvented the problem long ago if he’d been able to make the right people listen. The government’s idea of a diplomatic solution only served to edge the world closer to a massive war. “I couldn’t convince anyone to consider the logical alternative, a negotiated settlement where the Bulgarian people are protected. There is no stopping the Five Nations.” The statement alone made his gut churn.

“There has to be.” Clio rose from her seat, moved to her desk, and retrieved a scrap of paper. With graceful movements, she returned to his side. She handed him the document. “You need to read this. It will change your mind.”

Battling the skepticism that had been his hallmark since he’d left GeoPoly, he took the sheet from her hand. It was an e-mail. The chilling message mentioned destruction, war, and an end to mankind. “Who is this Pierus?”

“He’s a demi-god who thought his nine daughters were better than the daughters of Zeus, my sisters and me.” The corners of her mouth lifted slightly. “Zeus is never nice when he’s pissed off. He turned Pierus’s daughters into magpies. Pierus has been seeking to restore them ever since.”

“Whoa! Zeus is your dad? Like, Zeus Zeus? God of Gods, Zeus?” Okay, his world shifted from I can handle her as a Muse to what the fuck have I gotten myself into? He shook his head in denial but then recalled the sight of the bird this morning, and more recently outside Clio’s bedroom window.

“The same. Anyway, Pierus resurfaced recently and challenged us to a contest to return his brats to human form. It’s his version of a hostile takeover of Olympus. He wins, and he gets dominion over all immortals. And his daughters would be unleashed on humanity.” Clio shuddered. “The effect on mortals will be dire. They’ll live up to their names, like Tyranny, Strife, Mayhem. You get the idea.”

“Can he do it?” Aw, shit. That sounded like he was a believer. And maybe, just maybe…

Clio frowned. “He can if we fail at the challenge he’s set for us.”

“Have any of you failed?”

She shrugged. “I’m the first.”

“His message says one Muse, one man. How do you know I’m the man?”

“The magpies keep appearing. You mentioned a run in with a crazy old man and a bird. I believe that was Pierus. The other night in the library when it was storming so badly, I spied the image of Pierus and his skanky daughter in a flash of lightning.” She shook her head again. “Tonight when we walked past the street musician, that was Pierus in disguise.”

The dotted line from his run-in with the bird to Clio’s story just filled in like a solid fucking black dart.

About the Book

Gemma's favorite desk accessories for many years were a circular wooden token, better known as a 'round tuit,' and a slip of paper from a fortune cookie proclaiming her a lover of words; some day she'd write a book. All it took was a transfer to the United Kingdom, the lovely English springtime, and a huge dose of homesickness to write her first novel. Once it was completed and sent off with a kiss, even the rejections addressed to 'Dear Author' were gratifying.

After returning to America, she spent a number of years as a copywriter, dedicating her skills to making insurance and the agents who sell them sound sexy. Eventually, her full-time job as a writer interfered with her desire to be a writer full-time and she left the world of financial products behind to pursue a career as a romance author.

Gemma focuses mainly on contemporary and paranormal romance, with an occasional detour into science fiction romance. Her titles are available in digital and print-on-demand at all major retailers.

Spotlight: The Glitch by Ramona Finn

Genre: YA Dystopian
Release Date: September 5th 2016

On the brink of extinction, being human means more than just surviving.

In Lib’s world, it’s dangerous to deviate from the norm. In fact, for someone who doesn’t live up to the Artificial Intelligence’s standards, it’s practically a death sentence. Lib learns this the hard way when she wakes up in a barren wasteland, with her memories erased, and only one thought lodged in her mind:

“It’s all my fault.”

Lib is a Glitch—an imperfect human component of the utopian world called the Norm. Now she’s thrown out, Lib will be forced to team up with another Glitch, Raj, and the mysterious Rogue Wolf and his clan to survive. Wolf only cares about the survival of his group, but Raj thinks they can hack the A.I. and change the Norm for the better.

Now, Lib will have to decide which path to choose—whether to go with striking loner Raj or stay with Wolf and his tight-knit group. Her heart is drawn to both, but she’s carrying a deadly secret that could jeopardize them all. Will she be able to save her newfound family and stop the A.I. before it’s too late?

Excerpt

The next day I go out with Raj, but we don’t go out alone. Bobcat and several other Rogues go with us. I don’t know their names and no one bothered to tell them to me. Wolf isn’t with us. When I ask Bobcat why, she says, “He can’t be expected to hold your hand every day.”

My face heats. “Did I ask for that?”

I turn away and head over to Raj’s AT. His bruises yellow his skin and his moves are stiff, but he smiles at me. “I’ll hold your hand.”

My face warms again. I shake my head and swing a leg over the AT. We ride the small ones, and I wrap my arms around Raj. He flinches and gives a groan. I loosen my grip. “Still hurts?”

“Only when I laugh,” he mutters.

Bobcat gets on her AT with another Rogue. She leads the way. We follow her for several miles, winding through dusty canyons until the cliffs open up into an almost grassy area. The grass is thin and grows in clumps, but it looks like the grass Wolf showed me how to eat.

Bobcat slows and comes to a stop. I glance around, remembering what Wolf said. I close my eyes and listen and smell. I can smell faint traces of oil, and I hear wind whistling through metal. Opening my eyes, I see a platform buried by sand.

I get off the AT and head over to the platform. It’s in worse shape than any I have seen. But it must be connected still. My hands are clammy, my nerves eating at me. I don’t want to explain why I don’t want to connect.

Raj goes down on his knees and brushes away the sand. He exposes a railing. The platform fell on its side—half is buried, but the railing is near the top. He grins. “The more obscure, the less likely the AI will be monitoring this platform. We still have to be careful. The sentinels still patrol every connect.”

I nod but don’t step any closer to the platform. I don’t want to go in. I never want to go in again. If I go in, will Conie let me out? Will Conie tell me things I don’t want to hear? Will I be reminded of my purpose?

I rub the sweat from my palms on my pants. The back of my neck is tingling and I want to rub it, too, but that would make it obvious how nervous I am.

Raj waves me forward, but I hesitate.

My hands are shaking. My heart pounds and my breath is fast and uneven. I am scared of going in there. I can still remember the AI and… and I don’t know why she helped me or why she had my mother’s face. For all I know, she has my mother somewhere in the Norm. Maybe she holds my mother hostage to use to force me to do what Conie wants. These are things I’m not ready to deal with yet, but I don’t have a choice. I can’t tell Raj about any of this—certainly not with Bobcat and the other Rogues watching us and watching the skies.

“Hurry,” Raj says. A flicker of irritation grates his voice. “You want to wait here until a drone flies by?”

I have no way out. I force myself to walk three steps forward, my heart pounding so loudly I am certain everyone can hear it. I stand beside Raj. The wind hums through the rustled metal. Maybe it will be fine. Maybe there is no power to this platform anymore. Maybe it is nonfunctional and nothing will happen when I try a connect.

Maybe I am dreaming.

Raj gives a tight nod. “Connect. I’ll let you know what we’re looking for once we’re inside.”

Before I can agree or disagree, he places his hand on the railing. His eyes glaze over, unfocused and distant, until it seems as if his body is an empty shell. I hadn’t thought about how a connect must look to others, but now I glance at the Rogues. They look away and shift uneasily. It must seem to them that Raj isn’t really out here anymore. Which is true. His mind is tucked inside a vast computer right now, floating in an endless flow of data.

I can’t leave him there on his own. He might encounter sentinels. Or Conie.
