Excerpt

“What are you doing?” she said.

A trick question. He was either waiting for her to gather the courage to meet the evil fuck that was Joseph Folsom, a disgraced cop, murderer, kidnapper, and friend, or he was waiting to congratulate her on the decision to back out of the meeting.  He supposed either wouldn’t be kind to point out, so he equivocated. “Enjoying the breeze and your gardens.  It’s much better than waiting downtown under fluorescent lights, smelling day-old coffee in a littered conference room.” He took a cleansing breath and stretched his neck.  The scent of freshly mown grass was competing with the roses perfuming the air. “This neighborhood is great.”

She arched a brow, clearly skeptical. “Kids playing outside? Lawn mowing? Ice cream trucks? It’s a family neighborhood. Careful, Lucas, it might give you the hives.”

He smiled, wondering if she were right. She could be. No one knew Lucas better than Harper. That’s why it was a blow when she left. “Seems nice enough.” Right out of a 1950s sitcom. Unreal. Glancing at his watch, he knew time was getting tight, and the porch stairs weren’t becoming any more comfortable. “Ready to go?”  He hoped she’d take this chance to back out of the meeting.  “Or stay.”

“Go.”

He sighed, knowing if he pressed too hard, she’d dig in and stop listening to him altogether.  His best bet was to bide his time and work on her during the trip downtown.  She stood, hung her leather pocketbook over her shoulder, and led him down the walkway and through the gate. As was his habit, he surveyed the neighborhood as he hurried her to the street and the passenger side of his car. He wanted to say something to ease the tension, but Harper beat him to the punch.

“I see you finally gave her a new paint job.” Harper ran her fingers along the sleek lines of his Chevy, reminding him it wasn’t so long ago she’d caressed him with such studied attention. He wondered if she’d triggered his memories on purpose, but then a quick study of her expression told him he was suffering from wishful thinking. She was oblivious and he was resigned and disappointed by that reality.

“The Chevy’s a work in progress.” The new black paint, two white stripes down the hood’s center, hid delayed maintenance, but one day Lucas would make the innards as beautiful.  He gripped the passenger door’s handle, about to open it for her, when a breeze wafted the scent of her new shampoo toward him, distracting him long enough to morph his glance into a stare. Harper noticed, flushed, and looked away.

“Aren’t we all?” she said.

“Aren’t we all what?”

“A work in progress. Are you going to open the door or do you want me to wrestle you for it?”

Lucas realized he was still holding the handle.  He popped the door open and stood back, thinking it unfair only he was affected by their close proximity, only he felt the electricity in the air. His body thrummed with it. He was grateful she took care not to brush against him as she entered the car, sitting in the bucket seat. He wouldn’t have been able to handled that.

Telling her twelve-year-old siblings their worlds are about to shatter.

The second?
Asking her estranged stepbrother for help.

The deaths of his father and his father's new wife mean practically nothing to nineteen-year-old Noah Mack—until the stepsister he barely knows comes begging for help. His response? Pretty much—"Get the hell lost."

But when he can't get his new stepsister out of his mind, he goes to the extreme and gives up the NCAA Wrestling Championship title and his college education.

That's when the real problems begin.

Lorraine and Noah face many obstacles when picking up the pieces of their parents' deaths, but none as big as the secrets they keep.

Excerpt

Lorraine sat on the couch in the back of the room, as far away from the caskets as she could be. She hadn’t yet taken a close look at her mother. That would take courage. Mimi was up front greeting everyone the whole time, but near the end, she came to check on her granddaughter. “Come on, Rainy. I’ll go with you.”

Lorraine shook her head. “Not yet.”

“It’s almost the end of the first session. Come on.”

Not budging from the seat, Lorraine asked, “Where’s Grandpa? I thought he was coming.”

“He is. His flight comes in at five. He has a car picking him up at the airport. He had to take care of the condo and stuff, since it’ll be empty for a while.”

“Empty?”

“Grandpa and I are going to live with you for a while.”

Lorraine was relieved. “Thank God,” she whispered.

Mimi squeezed Lorraine’s knee. “Your mother left you kids to me in her will, and Norah's father left Norah to Tatum if something happened to him, so it makes sense for your grandfather and me to move into your house.”

“Really?”

“Yes. Don't worry. That’s why Grandpa is making arrangements.” Mimi patted Lorraine's knee. “Come on now. Let’s go see your mother.”

Lorraine did not want to see her mother. Not like this. She wanted to remember her the way she was when she was alive, not lying lifeless in a casket in a funeral home. “I really don’t want—”

“Rainy. Come on. Carter did it.”

Lorraine did notice Carter standing at the casket earlier. He stood there almost as still as his mother was lying in the casket. “Where is he now?”

“I don’t know.” Mimi took Lorraine’s hand and walked with her up to the caskets.

Lorraine stopped in front of Brick’s casket first. Her grandmother didn’t protest, but she did let go of Lorraine’s hand and back away. At least her mother and Brick were together. They could comfort each other, she thought as she looked at Brick, but it was getting difficult for Lorraine to breathe. She’d look at Brick and then side-eye her mother. She knew she had to do it, but how? Breathe, Lorraine. Breathe. One side-step to the right, and then she stopped. Inhale, exhale. Inhale. Exhale. If Lorraine didn’t remind herself how to breathe, she’d run out of air. She tried to take another side-step to the right, but before she did, a hand took hers. It wasn’t her grandmother’s; it was too large and not very soft. Noah. He didn’t say a word. He pulled her to the right with a gentle tug and brought her to her mother. Inhale, exhale. Inhale, exhale. Her heart was pounding, her chest was tight, and it was getting even harder to breathe.

Still holding her hand, Noah took a step forward and knelt on the bench in front of them. Lorraine had no choice but to do the same; he was still holding on to her hand. Noah remained quiet as he exchanged one of his hands for the other, never disconnecting from Lorraine’s. With his right hand now in Lorraine’s, his left hand was free to run slowly up and down her back, a tender touch of encouragement. Lorraine didn’t know why, but this last gesture caused her heart to stop, her breath to halt, and her tears to gush. With her free hand, she covered her mouth as she let out what sounded like a grunt and a yelp.

“Breathe, Lorraine,” Noah whispered right into her ear. “Breathe.”

She wiped at her wet face, then reached out her arm to touch her mother. Her fingers lingered just above her mother’s shoulder, but she couldn’t bring herself to actually touch. The mint blouse. She should have picked the coral one. Maybe she wouldn’t look so pale. More of Lorraine’s tears leaked from her eyes. Noah’s hand was still on her back, and she could feel its heat through to her chest. “How am I going to live without you, Mom?” she whispered. “What am I supposed to do?” Her fingers never actually touching her mother, Lorraine brought her hand back to her face and wiped at the wetness again. “Please don’t leave me, Mom. Please come back. Please. Please come back, Mama,” she barely uttered out loud. She dropped her head onto the wooden stand and sobbed. Noah’s hand came up on her shoulder, while his other hand squeezed hers. She was sobbing so hard that it hurt in her belly. Noah let go of her hand and placed two fingers beneath her chin to raise her head, and without hesitation, Lorraine leaned into Noah and cried into his chest. It hurt so badly that her body felt paralyzed, yet all she wanted to do was scream and run and disappear into thin air. She couldn’t be here anymore. Lorraine didn’t know how to move on from here. The next minute scared her, never mind the next week, or month, or year. Her mother was her everything. How could she exist without her? How could she move on?

After soaking Noah’s shirt with her tears, for she hadn’t an idea how long, Lorraine pulled back only when her grandmother’s hand cupped around her arm. “Rainy,” she whispered.

“Oh, Mimi,” she cried as she got up and hugged her grandmother, a new set of tears pouring from her eyes.

“Come on. We’re going home.”

Gretchen snorted and looked back at His Royal Gorgeousness. “What is he doing?”

“Juggling?”

Jenny watched, mouth open, as Man-Candy juggled three limes in the air while bending backward, tilting his head enough so that the laughing female bartender could pour a shot directly into his mouth. The crowd gathered around him cheered and he popped back up, still juggling.

“Lime!” he shouted.

The bartender tossed a lime slice into the air and he tried to snatch it with his mouth. And missed. To the disappointment of his groupies.

“Again!” he said.

The bartender grabbed another slice, aimed it carefully, and tossed it in an arc. He staggered backward, keeping the limes in his hands going while he focused on the one falling through the air.

“Incoming,” Gretchen said, getting out of the way of certain disaster as he stumbled toward them, his attention intent on the lime slice.

He caught it in his mouth right as the back of his foot connected with their bench. His limes went flying. And so did he. His butt hit the floor. And his head landed face-up squarely in Jenny’s lap.

She yelped and pressed back against the bench. Little good that did her. She couldn’t really go anywhere with him half-laying on her. Didn’t really want to, if she was honest. He was even hotter closer up. Who was she to turn away a gorgeous man who introduced himself with his face in her lap? That would be rude.

He glanced up, opened his mouth, and smiled, the lime slice wedged firmly between his teeth. His friends cheered again and he held the lime up like a trophy. Then he turned his attention to Jenny.

“Hey, there.” He beamed up at her like she was his new best friend. “Sorry about that. I’m usually a bit more graceful with the party tricks.” He slid off her lap and stood, before holding out a hand to help her up.

“Not a problem,” she said. She glanced at the lime he’d dropped on the table. “That was impressive.”

“Thank you.” He looked her up and down and she shivered as if he’d run his hands over her body. And then she returned the favor, biting her lip as she feasted on the incredible specimen of manhood before her.

He gave her a slow, sensual grin that had her sucking in her breath.

“Interested?” he asked.

Nice line. Short, sexy, and to the point. She approved .“Very. You?”

His eyebrows raised in surprise. Maybe he wasn’t used to women who didn’t play hard to get. Judging by the sudden heat in his eyes, he didn’t mind at all.

“Extremely,” he said. “My place?”

She shook her head. “Dance floor.”

He playfully pouted and it was all she could do to keep from sucking his bottom lip into her mouth.

She laughed. “Sorry. Only dancing tonight.” For now. “Still interested?”

“Definitely,” he said.

He walked backward, keeping his gaze glued to hers while he made his way out to the floor. The crowd parted for him like he was Moses parting the Red Sea.

Jenny took a deep breath to try and calm her frantically pounding heart and leaned over to Gretchen, while still keeping her focus on him.

“Don’t wait up for me.”

Gretchen laughed. “Sorry. If things look like they are getting out of hand, I’m going to come drag you away. If you don’t come home tonight, Rick is going to have a total shit fit. He’ll have half the Hoboken PD out looking for you.”

Jenny’s sigh was full of fondness mixed in with exasperation. She loved Rick, but having a big brother who was a cop took the protective thing to a whole new level.

“You’ve got a point. I’ll try and rein it in, but you might seriously have to come pull me off the dance floor.”

“You really think your self control is that bad?”

“I know it is.” Jenny set her drink down. “He’s hot and I’m bothered and that’s a recipe for disaster. Well, it’s actually a recipe for some insanely hot sex. But I guess having my big brother come kick down the door would sort of put a damper on the mood. And Rick was very specific about me making it back home tonight. Ugh. Fine. I’ll try and keep it in my pants, if I must.”

“You must,” Gretchen said with a wink, heading off to do a little dancing of her own.
