Her eyelids fluttered. Opened.

“How are you feeling?” That question was more appropriate than interrogating her on how she came into possession of a human eyeball. He’d wait until she was fully conscious before tripping down that trail.

“Cold. So cold.” Goose bumps pimpled over her bare skin. She scooted toward where he sat on the edge of the bed, wrapping herself around his hips, seeking his body’s warmth.

He should get the heavy sleeping bag from the closet. He should cover her with it and leave the room. He should, he should, he should. He didn’t. He pulled off his boots and eased into the bed. She latched onto him before he fully reclined.

She molded herself to him. His shoulder her pillow, her arm around his middle, one of her legs draped over his thighs, her knee just a few miniscule inches from his groin. Everything vanished, except the vivid sensation of her feminine curves burrowing into him, seeking his safety, his comfort, his warmth. She was cool where he was on fire. She was soft where he couldn’t bend. She was sweet where he felt bitter.

She fit into his arms, against his body, and into his soul like she was designed especially for him. He wanted to believe he could have a happy ending with her, but his reality was a cruel, hard place where good things just didn’t happen. Or if they did, they never lasted.

Seven Things about Abbie Roads

1.  She loves Snicker Parfaits. Gotta start with what’s most important, right?

2. She writes dark emotional books featuring damaged characters, but always gives her hero and heroine a happy ending… after torturing them for three hundred pages.

3. By day she’s a mental health counselor known for her blunt, honest style of therapy. At night she burns up the keyboard. Well… Burn might be too strong a word. She at least sits with her hands poised over the keyboard, waiting for inspiration to strike. And when it does—the keyboard might get a little warm.

4.  She can’t stand it when people drive slowly in the passing lane. Just saying. That’s major annoying. Right?

5.  She loves taking pictures of things she thinks are pretty.

6.  She’s represented by Michelle Grajkowski of 3 Seas Literary.

7.  Her first book RACE THE DARKNESS was a Publishers Weekly Top 10 Pick for Fall.

Excerpt

It had been twenty-three days. I wrapped and rewrapped the bandage around my waist, praying my ribs were bruised not broken. I bought more ramen in packs of ten and camped out in the motel, eating the chicken-flavored noodles for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I tried to sleep, but he was always in my dreams. Once I closed my eyes, thoughts of him came roaring back like waves before a storm.

Bribed by the brightness of day I could almost remember us as a fairy tale, detach myself like it was someone else he’d sat next to that first day eating an ice cream cone and an apple, telling me I was beautiful. That we were “forever.”

At least it wasn’t just me. He’d had Nita fooled, too. She’d watched the two of us after quarantine training, sitting to hear from the elders, eating lunch outside in the sunshine, whispering secrets, laughing, trusting—she would have warned me if she’d known. She was the only person left to trust.

It was easier to think about Nita, even though I waited every day for her to come, to find me and drag me back. At night the sound of cars, people in the hallway fumbling with their motel keycards, the muted tumble of the ice machine all bruised the air like an omen. I kept the shades closed and the volume on the TV low. I made mental checklists of the redeemable points: I was alive, there was still money left, still noodles in colorful wrappers stacked next to the TV, the air conditioner worked today. That was okay until I blinked and saw his face, until the memory of his smile pushed against any safe space I tried to build, then the tears found room all over again.

I would not cry. I would do something. Figure something out. I’d make a plan, and it would have to be soon, very soon. It had been twenty-three days. My connection to the others was still too strong.

Nita would be coming.

We drove along the dirt road and turned onto the main highway. Alex and Ally stared out the window intently. “Look at this place,” Alex sighed. “It’s so different.”

Ally said nothing.

“So, how old are you, Alex?” Amber asked. She looked at him in the rear view mirror.

“Eighteen, I guess.”

My mom turned into a Denny’s and parked. “You guess?”

Alex nodded.

We took a table close to the door. It wasn’t crowded inside the restaurant which seemed to ease the tension a little.

“So, what happened at the ‘you know what’?” I smiled, swallowing. Amber avoided my eyes. She didn’t go to the psychiatric hospital. But, who was I to judge her? If she wanted to lie to me then that was okay. “Did they help you?”

“She didn’t go,” Alex answered. “She never had any intention to really go.”

Amber’s lip quivered. Why did Alex have to be so cruel? Couldn’t he just let my mother lie to me?

“It’s okay, mom. I’m just happy you’re here.” I grabbed her hand. She squeezed me back hard. “Alex can be a little blunt sometimes. I don’t think he means anything by it, though. Millie considers them geniuses.”

My mom placed her hand on Alex’s arm.

She was going to tell him it was okay; that she understood and he hadn’t offended her. The truth was always the best policy. Yes, that is what my mother would’ve said for sure…

Alex screamed and smacked her hand away. He stood and picked up his chair. His face burned red and I could see one of his veins popping out on his forehead. He lifted the chair above his head, as if he were going to hurl it at my mother.

“Alex!” I yelled. “What are you doing?”

He looked into my eyes. His chair found its place on the floor again and he sat.

My heart pumped and my skin itched. What a lunatic. “Mom, don’t touch Alex, he doesn’t like it.”

My mother sat frozen at the table. “Uh, I can see that.”

Alex nodded and scooted back to the table.

Our waitress inched her way over with a look of horror on her face. “I-Is everything all right here?”

Ally smiled. “Yes, of course. We’re just very hungry.

Spotlight: Worth the Risk by Jaime Beck

Message from Jaime!

This is a bittersweet release week for me because it marks the end of the St. James novels, which I’ve so enjoyed writing.

This book’s hero is Jackson St. James, the brother readers have watched spiral downward into a bottle since book one. Several losses (death, abandonment, and betrayal) drove him over the edge and have put him in danger of losing his homebuilding business and his family. An ultimatum forces him to address his demons, so he’s taking a hiatus in nearby Vermont, where he hopes Mother Nature and a little counseling will help. What he doesn’t expect to encounter is the force that is Gabby Bouchard, a young single mom who’s faced her own demons without falling apart. Gabby has grown up in rural Vermont and has never seen the likes of a guy like Jackson. He’s generous, thoughtful, and gorgeous, and she’s more than a little excited that he’s rented out the garage apartment. But then she learns he’s got a drinking problem, which hits a little close to home considering her mother’s addiction and abandonment.

On the surface, these two romantics know they’re star-crossed, but they’re also uniquely positioned to help the other tackle the problems each faces as the story unfolds.  In particular, Gabby is the first person Jackson has truly admired in a long time, which is a catalyst for the true beginning of his turnaround.

Here’s an excerpt from when Gabby first learns the reason why Jackson came to town, which is just after Gabby has finished telling him about how her mother chose drugs over her:

Jackson worked to maintain an unruffled expression in the wake of her emotional outpouring, but inside his stomach twisted like a screw. Had David, Vivi, Cat, and Hank all felt a sense of relief in his absence?

Had he gotten so absorbed in his own pain that he really hadn’t recognized he might be causing theirs? “So you don’t want to see her?”

After a pronounced pause, Gabby sighed, gazing off at some distant point while she spoke. “Normally I believe in second chances, but in this case, I’m not sure. It’s not worth considering, since it’ll never happen.” A note of sadness rang in that last remark. “The most important thing the whole experience taught me is that I have to be a mom Luc can always be proud of. One he can count on. I won’t let him be hurt by someone he should be able to trust. Not even if that person’s his own father.”

Gabby’s gaze returned to him. “You’re pale. Have I horrified you with my seedy family history?”

Pale? That was better than blood red, which was what he would’ve guessed given his spike in body temperature. A beat of misplaced anger surfaced thanks to the unwanted mirror she’d thrust at him. But she had no idea of his life or his secrets, so she hadn’t known how her feelings about her mother’s behavior would affect him.

Gabby’s baby blues filled with concern, which chased away his irritation. God, he admired her strength and sincerity. So resilient, which reminded him a bit of Vivi. Well, minus the quirks and the fact that he didn’t—in any way—think of Gabby like a sister.

Somehow the fierce little warrior in front of him remained chipper and compassionate despite being abandoned, getting pregnant by a dickhead, and living her whole life in this tiny town. Tar-thick shame stiffened him as he contrasted his relative weakness against the strength of this wisp of a woman.

“No. It’s not you.” He cleared his throat. “It’s me.”

“Oh?” Her brows furrowed. “So someone close to you battles addiction, too?”

“In a manner of speaking.” He twisted his neck, scanning everything in the room but her, unable to remember why he’d thought for one second opening this door had been a brave move. His shirt clung to his skin thanks to a sudden trickle of perspiration.

“Cryptic.” A resigned grin flickered, but she didn’t press.

Suddenly infuriated with himself for being comparatively spineless and dishonest, he met her gaze in an endeavor to deserve her respect. Too bad the truth would probably shatter her opinion of him.

“According to my family, I’m the screwup. I’m on this ‘hiatus’ because they ambushed me—told me to change my drinking habits if I wanted to be part of my niece or nephew’s life.” He watched her jaw drop open and then, with some chagrin, said, “Told ya you wouldn’t think our meeting ‘serendipitous’ for long.”

Spotlight: What You Do to Me by Barbara Longley

Message From the Author

WHAT YOU DO TO ME is a fun, flirty romantic comedy about two individuals who are set up by the heroine’s mom, who hopes a little male flirtation with the Twin Cities’ local lothario will nudge her daughter back into the dating pool.

Sam is outed on radio talk show as being the “handsiest handyman” in the twin cities. Having lost his parents as a young teen, Sam definitely has commitment issues. When his family’s construction business begins offering handyman services, and his women clients start throwing themselves at him, he sees the situation as the perfect solution to his relationship-free lifestyle—that is, until he meets Haley, who makes him want to prove there’s more to him than his reputation.

Haley’s heart was broken when her fiancé moved to Indonesia two weeks before their wedding. Since then, she’s been taking out her anger and frustration on her poor house, which is now a wreck. Sparks fly when Sam, hired by Haley’s mother, shows up at her door to do an estimate for putting her house back together. After he hands her the estimate, Sam makes a pass. Mortified, Haley realizes her mother has set her up, and she fires Sam.

Sam is also mortified. The curvy brunette believes he’s so incompetent as a carpenter that he has to offer sex on the side to get jobs. Fueled by a need to prove she’s wrong about him, he makes a deal with Haley: He’ll do the job and keep his hands to himself. Haley agrees, so long as he’s willing to teach her how to do the work herself along the way.

Though he’s hot, Haley doesn’t see Sam as date-worthy. Sam is attracted to the curvy paralegal, but she’s uptight and judgmental. Surely they can keep things strictly professional, right?

About the Book

Whether it’s repairing a home or taking care of clients’ other needs, Twin Cities handyman Sam Haney is in demand from his mostly female clientele. Despite Sam’s lothario reputation, love isn’t part of his portfolio. He’s built a lot of walls in his time, but the one that’s surrounded his heart ever since the death of his parents is his most solid yet.

Haley Cooper has had enough heartache for a lifetime. Her high school sweetheart up and moved to Indonesia—alone—just two weeks before their wedding. Her mother thinks it’s time for Haley to move on and contracts Sam to work on Haley’s wreck of a house—and anything else, if he’s got the notion.

Sparks fly and passion ignites. But Haley isn’t into Sam’s love-’em-and-leave-’em act. She wants something more. Fixing a house is one thing, but for this handyman, building a relationship will need a whole different set of skills.

Excerpt

Whatever prompted him to reach for her, it didn’t explain the letdown he couldn’t shake. Haley Cooper was the cutest little brunette he’d ever laid eyes on. Petite, with a sweet figure, silky brown hair and a wholesome girl next door appeal. A man could get lost in those large brown eyes of hers. Whoa. Probably a good thing she’d fired him.

Still . . .You can’t be any good . . . Her words bounced around inside his head and churned in his gut. If Grandpa Joe got word of this . . . Oh, man, his rear end was going to be in the wringer for sure.

He scrubbed the lower half of his face with his hand and stared back at Haley’s bungalow. The woman had exposed electrical wires in her kitchen. If they connected, arced, the place would go up in smoke. The house was a disaster waiting to happen. He shut the passenger door, circled around to the back of his van and fished out a few electrical wire caps from his tool box.

She’d dissed his skills as a carpenter. He couldn’t let that fly. Then there was the mystery of why such an attractive woman’s mother would feel the need to set her daughter up the way she had. He wanted answers. His feet started him back up the path leading to the front door.

He rapped his knuckles against the door and took a step back. The door swung wide, and Haley gaped at him in surprise. She was probably expecting some suit-and-tie guy come to take her out. Of course. She looked like a suit-and-tie kind of woman, not his type at all—not that he had a type. “Hey, I think we got off on the wrong foot.”

“You think?” She arched a single brow and managed to look down her nose at him, even though she was a good half a foot shorter. “Don’t worry about it,” she said with plenty of attitude. “I’m not going to complain about you to your HR department.”

Haney & Sons didn’t have an HR department. Far Worse. They had Grandpa Joe and Grandma Maggie. Ms. Cooper’s smugness annoyed him. “Obviously you have mother issues, and—”

“I don’t have mother issues.” A blotch of red blossomed on her collarbone.

Another red blotch appeared on her neck, and another on her cheek. Interesting. Ms. Cooper was not a woman who blushed. She blotched. He bit the inside of his cheek to keep from smiling. Why hadn’t he noticed that before? Oh, right. Probably because he was too busy trying to come up to speed on the whole mother-called-pretending-to-be-daughter thing and all. “OK, your mother has issues.”

“I’ll concede the point.” Haley crossed her arms in front of her, lifting her breasts slightly.

Do not stare. Do not even glance in that direction. “I’m just as much a victim here as you are.”

She snorted, and the smugness returned to her expression.

“Hey,” he said, giving her his most charming smile. “I’m very good at what I do. Give me a chance to prove it to you.”

Her brow rose, and one side of her mouth twitched up a millimeter. “I’m sure you’re very good at what you do, Mr. Haney, but I’m still not going to have sex with you. Still not interested in your special touch.” She made quote marks in the air, bracketing her words.

Well, that stung. Doggone it, not only had she insulted him, but now she wanted to rub salt into the wound? “I’m not talking about my skills in the bedroom, Ms. Cooper. I’m a skilled carpenter. The best.” He straightened and crossed his arms in front of him, mimicking her stance.

“All I’m asking is that you give me the chance to prove to you that I . . .” Don’t need to offer sex on the side to get jobs? Why did he feel the need to prove anything to this uptight little paralegal? “Look. Your mother already hired me to put your house back together. She’s footing the bill, right? Let me do the job I was hired to do.”
