Part I:

In The Beginning
1754 ~ Gold Coast, Ghana

I wait for him here at the place where the night sky and the earth become lovers.  In the tall grass of our homeland, between two kingdoms, we meet.

Getting here early is easier than slipping away late, especially now when life in my village is bustling with the preparations for our wedding in just three days.

But as the reeds lick the backs of my calves, I know that this is only one part of the reason I wait.

The truth is that I like to feel him coming.  At this hour, when my imagination reigns over every shape and whisper, I can almost see him walking on limbs taller and stronger than mine will ever be.  He cuts through the night that hides his slightly lighter shade and stalks his prey.  I cannot hear his approach, but I feel him drawing near, compelled by the same force that holds me where I stand—the scent of my desire in the air.

I close my eyes and breathe deeply, imagining I can taste him, too.  The flavor is salt, sweet grass, and home.  It fills my senses and makes me thirsty.

On the outside, my knees shake and my heart pounds, impatient for its mate, while the deepest part of me grows calm and still—stretching towards the peace that only his presence brings.

And he’s close now, so close.

***

When we were children, Ekow was such a scrawny thing.  I used to like to wrestle him just to beat him, just to prove that I could.  I was young, determined and more than a little jealous of the physical prowess of my older brothers.  Secretly, I wanted to be like them, but my youngest brother, Kofi, was already 10 years my senior by the time I could walk.  With Ekow, I knew I’d finally found a way to prove that no boy could match me.

My laughter rumbles in the stillness as I think of it.  Oh, how angry he would be every time I beat him!  And in the beginning, there were many, many times when I did.  He would get so upset that his ears would twitch.  He would stomp away from his defeat with his hands balled up in knobby little fists—eyes glaring, ears twitching, while one of our elders cackled nearby with me sticking out my tongue. We didn’t see each other often enough for me to beat him every day, but I looked forward to it whenever I could.  I was always stronger than I looked, and even when he grew a little taller than me, his limbs seemed to flail awkwardly about him so that he was never quite coordinated.  And in my delicious reign as his tormentor, time seemed to stretch on forever, until one day, it stopped.

I remember the sun burned low in the sky that day as the dust and amber light conspired against me in swirling fits that stung my eyes. Rolling around on the ground, I was shocked to find myself panting for air.  Suddenly, his legs overpowered me.  I couldn’t throw him the way I had been able to before.  His grip was a vice that I had to sweat to free myself from, and even then, he could catch me again, quickly—too quickly for my liking.

Unable to break free, I grunted and cursed as he pinned me down on my back.  At first, I refused to meet his gaze.  Beneath my eyelashes, I could swear I saw my own taunting smirk, the same one I had given him year after year, curling the corners of his lips.  Enraged, I shut my eyes and kicked my legs furiously, all to no avail.  I could feel the muscles of his powerful thighs holding me in place without the slightest indication of strain, and I couldn’t stand it.

As if sensing the scream that would send my brothers flying to my aid, he suddenly lifted his body from mine, then leaned over to adjust his grip so that our hands were stretched out above my head, palm to palm, fingers intertwined in the grass and the dirt beneath us.

How did I not know, even then . . . ?

Something about the gesture was so strange that it distracted me from my fury.  The feel of his hands pressed firmly into mine made my stomach flutter and clench in a way that was startling, but not unpleasant.

“Ama,” he called.  “Ama, don’t scream.  Ama, please, surrender.”

It must have been the “surrender” that made my eyes fly open to meet his in absolute indignation.

Sometimes I like to think that if I’d never opened my eyes, it never would have happened, but this is, of course, foolish.  I was meant to see.

I looked up to find him staring down at me.  The smirk I’d feared was nowhere in sight.

Instead, his eyes held the same wariness I felt as I looked back at him, then quickly dissolved into something I’d never seen in him before.

He eyed my mouth with what I understand now as a mixture of surprise and captivation.  Back then, I still had no idea what was happening, but as his gaze lingered, I began to feel that someone was seeing me truly for the first time in my life.  I remember fighting the nameless emotion that closed my throat and pricked my eyes.

“Ama, surrender,” he whispered, “Please.”

And that’s when I understood that I held him in place as much as he held me.

“Please,” he said again, and I finally realized what I needed to do all along.

Seeing the answer there in my eyes, he released my hands and rose to his feet.  I remember averting my eyes against the sudden rush of loneliness that came as he left.  But at the corner of my vision, I saw it, his hand extended out to help me up.  He’d done it before, even as I beat him and he’d risen in defeat while I remained holding my belly in victorious laughter on the ground.  I’d always ignored the gesture until that moment, when suddenly it felt like the most natural thing in the world to accept his help.

When I finally stood, I noticed for the first time that he’d grown at least 10 inches since the last time I saw him.

Despite my daze, I frowned.  “You’re taller than me,” I said in dismay.

“No, Ama,” he replied.  Ekow’s voice was deep, yet gentle as he stepped forward to take my other hand in his.  “Now, we are exactly the same height.”

I was 11 years old; Ekow was 13, and after that, nothing between us was ever the same.

Excerpt: Say You're Mine by Jenika Snow

Summary

She was mine before I even knew her name…

Felix

When I first saw Maggie, I knew we’d be the best of friends. I wanted that desperately, wanted her in my life, and I’d do anything to make sure that happened.

Until Maggie came in my life I didn’t know what love was.

She’ll be my first and last.

I’ll be her only.

Maggie

I didn’t know I could have a friendship like the one I have with Felix. But the friend-zone wall has always been in place. Being too afraid to cross it, I’d rather be in Felix’s life than tarnish the relationship we have.

Too much time has past. I’m done being afraid of the what-ifs. I’m ready to admit how I feel for him, consequences or not.

Felix

Maggie doesn’t know the lengths I’ll go to keep her in my life, but she will, because the very idea of her with someone else is not something I’ll even entertain. She’s always been mine, and it’s time I step up and show her how much I love her.

My devotion for her goes to the very depths of my soul, and staying back as she lives her life without me by her side is absolutely not an option.

Warning: This story is so sweet it might give you a stomachache, but it will be worth it. Short, straight to the point, and drama-free, be prepared to fall in love with this devoted hero who will go to any lengths to make the woman he loves his. A safe, overly happy read that will have you wishing you had a Felix in your life.

Excerpt

“We can go as slow or fast as you want.” I lifted my hand and cupped the side of her neck, pulling her head slightly toward mine. We were just an inch apart, sharing the same air, the sweet scent that saturated her filling my head.

“How about we start with you kissing me?” Her voice was low, heated.

I didn’t stop myself then. I tilted my head, and slanted my mouth on hers. A groan was ripped from me instantly. She was so perfect, so soft … so mine.

Maggie loved me.

The one girl I would die for wanted me.

The way she gasped against my mouth and let me have my way with her had me so fucking turned on. I had no doubts I’d come in my jeans like a damn teenager.

“Hold on to me, baby,” I couldn’t stop myself from saying.

She lifted her arms, wound them around my neck, and rose on her toes so she was totally flush with me. There was no spot on her I wouldn’t eventually touch.

My cock jerked behind my jeans, and I wanted more.

I needed more from her.

The rope in me started to unravel, and knew if I didn’t grapple with my control, I could lose it and ruin this. I didn’t want to go too fast, didn’t want to be too rough with my passion.

I wanted to make sure she felt good, that she was right here with me.

She dug her nails into the flesh at my back, and my entire body grew tighter, hotter.

“I need you so bad,” I said and found myself walking her backward, toward the bed.

I tangled my hands around her hair, tugging at the strands.

“Don’t stop,” Maggie gasped against my mouth.

I groaned again. “I have no fucking plans to.”

I thrust my tongue into her mouth, this guttural sound leaving me. I used my other hand to span her back, keeping her close.

I stroked my tongue along hers and pulled it deeper into my mouth. She moaned for me. I found myself pressing my dick against her belly, the softness of her stomach against the rock hardness of my dick making my balls draw up tightly.

“You have no idea how much I want you right now.” I pulled back and looked into her pleasure-filled face.

“Probably about as much as I want you?”

My heart jackknifed in my chest.

“I want you to be my first and only, Maggie.” I wasn’t ashamed or embarrassed in the slightest to admit I’d never had sex. I’d saved myself for this girl, for the chance to show her with my body what she meant to me. No other girl had ever compared to her, never even crossed my mind. Maggie was it from the very beginning.

I was possessive of her, obsessed with her, and there was nothing in this world I wouldn’t do for her.

“Let me show you how special you are to me.” I stared into her eyes.

Summary

When an Ivy League girl falls for a guy from the wrong side of the tracks, all the cards are stacked against them except one. Patrick Cobbs has just graduated his BUD/S training. His father's a drunk; his family is poor. He has nothing to offer Marg except the man he wants to become.

Pat's the last guy Marg’s anti-military parents want for their daughter. With her grandfather’s name etched on the Wall of the Fallen, Marg’s father will do anything to keep them apart. Only one person believes in them, and he’s dead.

Excerpt

“Are you going to kiss me good night?” Marg's voice held a haughty little tone.

He bowed his head and chuckled. “No.” Teasing her was too much fun, and he waited to see her reaction.

“Fine,” she quipped and tipped her shoulder. “Bruce did.”

Oh man, oh man. He torqued his brow. “There’s a difference between me and him, Marg.”

She cocked her head. “And that is?”

“When I kiss you for the first time, it’ll be on my terms when you least expect it.”

She clutched her palms together. “I might not feel like kissing you then, Patrick Cobbs. Sure you want to take that chance?”

He chuckled again. Relaxed and straddling his bike, he gazed at her. Smart and beautiful. Most guys would think he was off his rock, tempting fate or her ire. “I’ll take that chance. Let’s do things the old-fashioned way.”

“You make me nuts,” she finally blurted.

An honest laugh erupted from his chest, seeing he was twisting her into a ball of crazy. “This is good training for you, Miss Stines.”

“How?” she barked at him. Her brow squished together.

“Although you say you don’t want to live the life of luxury, I think you’re used to getting what you want.”

Her knuckles collided with her waist. “Are you calling me spoiled?”

“Are you?”

She took a quick step toward him and leaned over. Within an inch of his mouth, her voice slipped into a silky timbre. “No, SEAL, I’m not. You can keep your kisses. I don’t want—”

Execute. His hands palmed her cheeks and his mouth powered down on hers. Every ounce of blood rushed from his head to his heart. Her gorgeous body melted against his, submitting. Holy God in heaven! He’d been right. Kissing this woman coiled his lust tight.

Their kiss blazed and then ended with a slow burn before he gently pulled away. The corner of his mouth curved. “See you Friday.” He kick-started the engine to life.

“Friday…” she said meekly, gazing at him, still stunned.

He winked at her. Before his lust started talking him into screwing up the start to something incredible, he wheeled around the fountain and rode away.

She hadn't meant to shoot the man!

Kristen Johnstone fled down the narrow, cobblestone streets of London, trying to lose her pursuers. She glanced up at the eaves of the buildings she hurried passed; gargoyles laughing down at her.

Kristen knew she was doomed.

But the gargoyles didn't scare her half as much as the eyes of the man she'd just shot. The vivid blue still lingered in her mind: first the amused expression, followed by the irritated frown as he'd grabbed her in the act of picking his pocket, then the look of surprise when her gun went off.

She had to move faster!

She could go to jail for a very long time for what she'd done. Then who would take care of Hagan? Her five-year-old brother would have no one.

She had to hurry.

Stay close to the shadows of the buildings, she warned herself.

A tear slipped down her cheek as she rounded the next corner.  What was the matter with her? She didn't cry.  She never cried.  She hadn't wept once since her mother died some two years past, and now was no time to start.

She hadn't meant to hurt the man.

But what if she'd killed him?

Of course, it hadn't been entirely her fault. True, her hand had been in his pocket, but he'd grabbed her. That was when she'd smelled the liquor. All the horrible beatings she'd suffered from her stepfather came rushing back to torment her. Kristen had vowed then to die before she ever let anyone hit her again. So, she had simply reacted.

Turning to look over her shoulder, Kristen gasped.

The three men were gaining on her. Why couldn't she shake them?  She knew the streets -- every nook and cranny where one could hide -- better than anyone.  Two more turns, then down a small alley and she'd be free.

Her lungs burned and her parched throat was dry and raw. She couldn't go much farther. Her heart pounded, and the lack of food made her weaker than normal. Not paying attention, she crashed into a trash heap, sending debris tumbling down the street as she fought to keep her footing.

"If ye'd just let me out of this one, Father," Kristen whispered as she glanced toward heaven. "I promise tae repent."

Just then she tripped on a brick and went flying head first, landing in a heap on the cold cobblestones.

"Get up girl," one of her pursuers said as he yanked her to her feet.

"I--I can't breathe," she managed to gasp.

"You're just winded." A big, burly man patted her on the back. "'Course, if ya hadn't run us to death this wouldn't have happened."

Kristen took a huge gasp of air. "I dinna mean tae kill him. 'Twas an accident." Wide-eyed, she looked up at the bloke. This one was a giant with bulging muscles. "Ye don't really mean tae turn me over now, do ye?" Kristen made sure she didn't break eye contact as she slipped his knife out of his pocket. The big ones were as dumb as the rest, she thought.

The other man found his voice, "My God, Robbie, she's a Scot. Ya know how Claremont hates all Scots."

"Yeah, I know." The one called Robbie nodded his head as if he just might be thinking of letting her go. "The boss has been in a surly mood lately. She's only going to make it worse."

"And what might be wrong with a Scot? And who is this Claremont?" Kristen demanded.

"Come on girl."  Robbie grabbed her arm. "Claremont is the man you just shot. You'll meet him in good time." Robbie tugged, but she pulled back.  "You've given us enough trouble for one day." This time he jerked her hard, and she fell against his chest. "I can see we're going to have to do this the hard way," he said and simply tossed her over his shoulder like a sack. "I'm not going to turn you over to the authorities, girl. I'm taking you to Claremont."

"Put me down!" Kristen beat on his back. "I'll scream," she threatened when nothing else seemed to work.

Robbie swore.  "Go ahead," he muttered. Then he chuckled.

Of course, Kristen didn't utter a sound. She knew no one could help her now, and she especially didn't want to attract a Bow Street officer. She was doomed at eighteen. And, worse than that, who would take care of Hagan? He was too young to survive the streets alone.

Kristen could smell the salt water and hear the rude comments of the dock workers, letting her know they were nearing the river. All the blood had rushed to her head from hanging upside down and her temples pounded. She looked up to see her brother starting for them, and Kristen frantically waved him away.

"Let go of my sister." The sandy-haired child ran over and kicked the man following them.

"Run, Hagan! Run!"

"Now, what do we have here?" Robbie picked the child up by the collar "A little scamp?"

"Leave my sister alone!" Hagan swung at Robbie, barely missing his nose.

"This gets more interesting all the time." Robbie tucked Hagan under his arm and started up the gangplank.

"No!" Kristen managed to scream in her upside down position. "I--I can't swim." She started thrashing around, beating her hands on his back.

"Then I suggest you quit struggling," came a deep voice from someone she couldn't see, but was certain she'd not heard before. A voice that sent shivers down her spine.

Summary

Event planner Joanna McNamee is scrambling to ensure her father’s company Christmas party goes smoothly, but one disaster after another has her convinced someone is trying to sabotage her career. With the help of a man from her past who she’s still not sure she can trust, she puts the pieces together and realizes her business is the least of her problems—a cold-blooded killer is out to destroy her father and take her as his prized possession.

The last thing Deputy Ryker Kane expects is for a simple truck hijacking to throw him back into the middle of the Black Widow case he’d been forced to abandon, not to mention right into the arms of the sweet woman he’d let walk away ten years earlier. When he finds Jo Jo kidnapped and drugged, he has to use all his wits and skills honed from years as a detective to save them both. Despite the secrets between them, Ryker’s bound and determined to give them a second chance at love.

Excerpt

His wrists bound, Ryker lay in the back of the van beneath bags of laundry, planning his next move. They’d stopped briefly, and the driver got out, the man who’d pretended to be the hotel clerk taking his place behind the wheel. No words were exchanged, and Ryker went over his options. Not only had these lowlifes relieved him of his weapon, but his cell phone and radio as well.

Minutes later the van pulled to a stop in a darkened area, and the clerk put the vehicle in park. “I’ll be back to deal with you later, asshole.” The man snickered as he exited the vehicle, closing the door behind him. The idiot had no idea Ryker had managed to free one of his hands. Now he just needed to wait. Figure out their next move. If it involved Jo Jo, he needed to play it safe.

Due to the low light streaming in the front windows and the cement walls, they’d probably pulled into a parking garage, but that could be any number of places in downtown Houston.

He waited for the man’s footsteps to fade before he sat straight up, pushing the heavy, smelly bags off his body. With one move, he freed his other hand, tossing the rope to the far end of the van. Then he rolled his shoulder. It hurt like shit but wasn’t dislocated. A point in his favor.

He glanced out the front window. Sure enough, they were in a garage. Several black Lincolns lined one wall with The Ashton Grande marque scrawled across the side. Well, son of a bitch. The hotel Jo Jo's friend Sam called from. Maneuvering to his knees, he searched the area for signs of either of the men who'd ambushed him and bashed his head in.

An elevator chimed off to the right of the vehicle, and he caught a glimpse of the hotel clerk just as he stepped inside, pushing a laundry cart in front of him. Where the hell did that come from? They must have stashed it prior to their arrival. Hurriedly, he exited the van and made his way over to the bank of elevators, watching the numbers at the top of the doors as it ascended.

The number five lit up, and the progression stopped.

Fifth floor. But Sam had said room 618? Shit…what the hell did that mean?

He had a decision to make: wait for them to return or head up after them and try and catch them off guard. He searched the parking area for a phone. Damn. Nothing. He needed backup.

The light hovered for several minutes on the floor then started its way down again. Fourth floor, third floor, second floor. Looks like his decision was made for him.

Slipping behind a concrete column, he waited for the doors to open.

Sweat beaded on his forehead as the seconds ticked off on his watch.

Finally, the elevator chimed, signaling its arrival.

He stiffened. Readied to attack.

A man’s voice drifted out of the doors before they fully opened, and Ryker recognized it immediately as the driver’s. Wait for it. Wait for—

“You’ll see. Everything is going to be just fine, sweetheart.”

Ryker blinked back the confusion as a woman exited first, a weird getup on her head. He leaned in closer for a better look.

Jo Jo? What the hell?
