Spotlight: The Saskia Trilogy Boxset by Aoife Marie Sheridan

Four banished angels. A world created by the hands of God. A kingdom on its knees - and only one mortal to save them.

Growing up in the mortal world, Sarajane is shocked when she gets kidnapped and finds out that she is a princess in Saskia, a parallel universe she had no idea existed.

It's there that she discovers her abilities, but as her magic keeps growing, so does the threat towards her and her loved ones.

Following her destiny, she takes on the fight against a fallen angel and the task of saving Saskia and Earth before Lucian can destroy it.

Will Sarajane live up to the expectations or is it too late for her to save her new world?

Excerpt

Queen Bellona -Saskia-

I look upon the paintings that hang in the library of all the people that went before us. Their stories never interested me, not even as a child. My father spent my childhood drilling stories of the past into my head. My hate for him pushed me to pray to God and ask him to take my father, but he never did. His fist was his way to discipline me.

My mother would clean my wounds after my father’s rages. I could still hear her voice. “Oh why, Bellona, do you upset your father and force his hand upon you?” She would look at me with no remorse, only disappointment.

I hated her, but as always, I bit my tongue. “Sorry, Mother.”

It was just a whisper, as it was too painful to speak with broken ribs. For weeks after beatings, I was left to recover in my sleeping chambers. There were no children my age so the servants became my toys.

Shaking my head, I come back to here and now. I run my fingers along the spines of the books until I come across the one I want, the one my father used a long time ago. A shiver of pleasure runs through my body as the memories pour in. Her face frozen in a mask of pain. Her pleas for life. I was so young, yet every moment was truly enjoyable, watching her very soul torn apart. A smile plays on my lips just thinking about using the book again. Only this time, I know exactly what to do. I am not a frightened little girl anymore. I am the queen of Saskia.

Holding the book firmly to my chest I leave the library. Taurus, my personal bodyguard, is waiting for me outside to escort me back to my chambers. A small, fresh cut is on his face, something I must inquire about later, but not right now. I have too much to do. We walk in silence. The castle is empty, as everyone is preparing for the festival.

Reaching my chambers, I turn to Taurus. “I do not want to be disturbed.”

He inclines his head. “Most certainly, my lady.”

I close the door and cross the floor to my bookshelves that are mounted against the stone wall. Sliding the bible out causes a draft as the hidden door opens. I nearly laugh at the irony that my father used a bible as the passageway to enter such a dark place. I light the torch just inside the door and carry it down a winding stone staircase. I remember the day I discovered the secret passageway. My father was raging, full of wine, turning over tables in the library. I had never seen him so angry. He tore the books from their shelves; pages fluttered around me. I was truly terrified. I knew what these books meant to my father. He crossed over to the mortal world, taking all kinds of books. He was obsessed with their world.

He looked at me; the look of madness in his eyes terrified me. Racing towards me, he picked me up and threw me on the white marble floor, breaking my arm. A scream rose in my throat. “Get up. You disgust me,” he said while moving towards me again. He tripped over an overturned table and fell. I got up and ran to my mother’s chambers. Tears poured down my face as I cradled my arm. When I entered, my mother was lounging on her four-poster bed. She took one look at me and asked, “What have you done now?” At that very moment the realisation hit me. If he came after me, he would finish what he started, and my mother would not stop him this time. I ran and locked my mother’s door. She got up off her bed. “Bellona, what do you think you are doing? Unlock that door at once.” Placing the key in my dress pocket, I glared at her. “You won’t hurt me anymore.” I could hear the venom in my own voice.

Her face turned red with anger. “You spoilt little…” She never got to finish her sentence. Anything I put my hand on I flung at her. She screamed, startled. After emptying her dressing table, I moved around the room and started throwing books at her.

“Stop this at once—” She was cut off midsentence by a book I aimed at her head, but I missed. I reached to get another book  and that’s when the bookshelf opened. “Close it, and close it now, Bellona.” Her eyes darted to the door. “Your father will kill you if you go down there.” She actually looked frightened. She darted across the room, but before she could reach me, I opened the door and closed it behind me. She was still screaming her protests from her chambers. I raced blindly down the stone steps until I ended up in a large, circular room.

The room I stand in now. My father never knew I found his secret room and my mother never told him. I place the book on the stone stand that is in the centre of the room. Opening the cover causes a breeze to flutter around the room, stirring the candle flames, making them dance wildly. I close my eyes and breathe in the musty smell of the book. A low sob pulls me back. Bethany, the servant girl, is curled up sobbing in her cage. I move towards her, making her move back into the cage. Her ratty, dirty hair covers her face.

“Oh, Bethany. Shhh! It will be all over soon.” She looks at me and starts sobbing again. She has a poor existence. I am doing her a favour.

I prepare the altar by lighting candles and purifying the area for my sacrifice. Just below the altar, I place a large piece of black cloth for Bethany to lie on. Once Bethany is removed from the cage, I wash her down and remove her soiled clothes. She stands still, staring at the ground. The smell is becoming less intense the more she is washed. I hum a tune my mother used to sing to me at night time. It was one of her rare moments of kindness towards me.

“Lorem, my lady.”

I hit Bethany across the face. “It is forbidden to use Latin. You know this.”

I inhale a deep breath to calm myself. Latin stirs too many awful memories. It was the tongue of my parents. When I came into power, I banished the language and enforced English.

Bethany holds her face. “Sorry, my lady.”

I wrap her in a white silk robe and brush her wet hair from her face. Taking her bony hand, I place her on the ground in front of the altar. She keeps her eyes closed, but her body shakes with silent sobs. Taking my pendant off the altar, I place it around my neck. The purple stone starts to swirl.

Holding the black knife above Bethany, I start my incantation. Almost instantly, the energy in the room starts to rise, causing my hair to snap with electricity. I continue the incantation, saying it louder and faster, until I can’t hear myself over the roars of the demons in the room. The demons circle Bethany and me in a large black fog. They move so fast a wind races through the room. The only thing you can see through the black fog is their red, greedy eyes. I thrash the knife into Bethany’s heart.

Lightning strikes the floor beside the altar, opening up a hole in the stone. This has never happened before, but I ignore it and continue. Bethany’s eyes shoot open and the roar that leaves her mouth is so filled with pain and horror it sets the demons off. Their dark forms cover Bethany. They slash at her flesh while sucking all the blood from her body. I place my pendant above her heart and the demons tear at her soul. Bethany’s face is white and drawn, but she is still alive, still screaming. The colour of her eyes starts to drain. She looks at me, horrified, trying to claw at her face, but the demons push her soul into my pendant. Bethany’s eyes are completely white, her face frozen in a mask of anguish. The next part still shocks me.

I can hear her bones crumbling. Her head twitches until all that remains is ash and hair. I close the ritual by thanking the demons, but they are already paid in blood and pain.

The demons still linger in a circle around me. They normally leave after the sacrifice. Their unusual actions make me feel tense. The ground beside the altar starts to tremble. I get up off my knees. The hole that the lightning created is oozing with black liquid. The demons never move, but they all keep their eyes closed. I watch as a hand reaches out and grabs the side of the hole. Then a man climbs out with such ease and grace.

When he stands, I can feel the power radiate off him. His gaze falls upon me. I inhale a sharp breath at the sight of his eyes.

His lip curls into a smile. “I seem to have that reaction from most people. Is it my eyes?” He laughs at his own joke. I have never seen anyone with red eyes besides the demons, but he is a man.

“Who are you?” I ask in a commanding voice. He repeats my question back to me with a few of his own.

“Who am I? Where did I come from? And what do I want? They are the answers you really want to know.” He raises an eyebrow. “Am I not correct, Bellona?”

My patience is running out. I turn to leave, but the man is right in front of me. “That’s no way to treat a guest. Usually they would be offered a drink, maybe a seat.” I am beginning to feel very unsettled with this man.

“You may sit, but I have nothing to offer you to drink.”

He smiles. His teeth have reshaped from straight to long, black, pointed ones. “Oh, but you do.” He springs and grabs my head, pulling it back as he sinks his teeth into my cheek. Pain shoots through my body, but I am unable to scream or move, which makes it more terrifying. Images start to play out before my eyes, a land on fire, and the heat is at boiling point. I can taste the hot air in my mouth, making it hard to breathe. People with hollow eyes and burnt skin, their bodies tied in chains while carrying large rocks in their hands. The weight of the rocks causes their backs to hunch over. It is an image of torment and pure horror.

The man pulls his teeth from my face. I fall to the ground. Blood still runs from my puncture wounds. I look up at him in shock. He licks his lips and kneels down beside me.

“I am Lucian, king of the underworld. This is the first time in twenty centuries I have stood on solid ground.”

He moves around the room, but it looks like there is an invisible barrier that only allows him to go so far. He doesn’t look surprised by this at all; it is as if he was expecting it. I am unable to speak. The need to sleep makes my eyelids heavy.

“Oh well, this will have to do for now. The day will come when I shall call upon you for one request that you must fulfil.” He grabs my chin. “I want your oath, Bellona.”

I try to speak, but can’t. Lucian clicks his fingers and my mouth starts moving, my voice leaving, but it isn’t me. I grab my throat to try and stop the words, but they just pour out. “I, Queen Bellona, give you, Lucian, my word that I will grant you one favour whenever you need it.”

He smiles and lets my face go. It rests on my chest. I don’t have the strength to raise it. All I can see now is Lucian’s legs as he walks away from me and returns to the hole beside the altar.

“We will meet again.” And at that, he leaves and the demons follow him. When the last one goes through, the hole in the ground closes up. My eyelids flutter and I collapse.

When I awake, the room is in darkness. My body feels stiff and sore. Grabbing the altar helps me steady myself and stops the room spinning. I stumble up the stairs, inspecting my face with a shaky hand. It is crusted  in dry blood. I hold on to the wall as I make my way back to my chambers. I stagger to my bed and collapse on it, falling into a nightmare of the underworld. When I wake, I feel disorientated. I am lying on my bed in my gown. Raising my shaky hand to my chest, my fingers rest on my pendant. I let out a sigh of relief at feeling it under my fingertips. Moving my hand to my cheek, the skin feels rough. I rise on shaky legs and examine my face in the mirror. The left side from my cheek down to my neck is still crusted in dry blood, but the puncture wounds have healed.

I have never encountered anyone like him. Taurus is stationed outside my chamber doors. When I open them, he takes in my appearance. I can see he is straining to keep his face composed.

“My lady?”

“Taurus, get Corrona to fill a bath for me and prepare my supper.”

“Yes, my lady.”

Taurus leaves. I sit down on one of my armchairs beside the unlit fire. I have seen a lot in my hundred and fifty years, but never anything like Lucian. And to discover that another world exists… not a world I would ever want to rule. Corrona enters my chambers and her gaze falls on my cheek. She looks away quickly when she catches my eye and starts filling my bath.

Spotlight: A Pain Less Ordinary by L.V. Pires

Becca's life is anything but ordinary.

At fifteen, she's already experienced her share of pain. With a mom who drinks too much, a revolving door of father figures, and struggles at school, Becca wonders if she'll ever have a chance at a normal life. The only thing that keeps her sane is her little sister, Chloe; that is, until her mother's breakdown leads to her sister's disappearance.

A PAIN LESS ORDINARY follows Becca as she figures out life on her own while searching for her family and her new role in the world.

In this powerfully moving novel, L.V. Pires explores Becca's struggle with abandonment, drug abuse, homelessness, relationships, and how pain connects her to others.

Excerpt

It takes us a good ten minutes to back out of the driveway. Mom yells at me a few times to hurry up. My pulse speeds up. A throbbing pain pluses at my temple. There’s a kid in the street. How am I supposed to not hit him? I scream out and slam on the breaks.

Mom taps at the window, ignoring I just nearly killed someone. She drinks the clear liquid from her water bottle. I bite back tears.

I go about a half a mile from the house, speeding to a cool fifteen miles an hour, so we’re in a smooth glide, but keep my foot hovering over the brake sure we’re going to collide with a tree, fender, or small child any moment. Finally, the light turns yellow and I slam my foot down on the brake bringing the tires to a screech.

“Cut it out,” Mom says.

Right as I’m about to get the courage to tell her I don’t know what I’m doing, she moans as if I just ran over her foot.

I follow her gaze straight and suck in a breath. Arthur pushes the stroller ahead of us in the pedestrian lane. I can’t believe it. He’s got the phoniest smile on his face. He looks over, directly into our car. His plastic expression cracks. Mom’s face turns red. Her eyes fix on Chloe.

“Mom?” I try to redirect her. The light turns green.

Mom’s eyes are filling with rage. She watches him scurry to the sidewalk.

The car behind us honks.

“We have to go,” I say, gently, releasing the brake.

“Don’t move,” she says, cold and serious.

I slam down on the brake again.

She unbuckles her seatbelt and flings open the car door.

“Mom!” I yell, but it’s too late.

Today we have the release day blitz for Stripping Her Defenses by Amanda Adams! Check it out and grab your copy today!

Regret is a strange thing…sometimes it drops a man to his knees. But sometimes it’s more like a slow drip poison. I’ve only ever regretted two things in my life. Walking away from her was one of them...

Duty? Honor? Love? After ten years in the military, they all mean nothing to Daniel, nothing but pain. He's home now, but war—and the secrets that followed him—hold him in an unrelenting grip. It’s dangerous to fall in love, dangerous to believe the past will stay buried where it can’t hurt the people around him, where it can’t hurt her.

But one look at Chloe and he remembers a time when all he worried about was getting his hands on her. Does he deserve a second chance? Hell no. But he's got a new mission now: Strip every single one of Chloe's defenses and win back her heart. He'll use any means necessary to seduce her. And when the past comes calling, he’ll stop at nothing to protect her. Because when he's on a mission, he always gets his mark.

Exclusive Excerpt

“Chloe, you’re showing him a house. This is all business. Stop acting like this is some kind of date,” I mutter to myself, attempting to dial down the intensity and back away from the ledge. Maybe if I say it out loud enough times, I’ll believe it. Maybe, if I can forget the heat of that kiss, I’ll stop wanting what I can’t have. And Daniel definitely ranks high on my list of things I can’t have. I feel dangerously close to falling and giving in to childhood impulses.

I’m an adult now. I’d been a stupid nineteen-year-old kid when I made that pass at Daniel. I’d been a stupid kid who thought true love conquered all. And I knew I loved him and that he would love me. I’d watched all the right movies and read all the right books. The beautiful young princess always won the prince in the end, and then they lived happily-ever-after.

That was the big lie. In real life, the prince turned her down flat and disappeared on the other side of the world, her mom got sick, died of cancer, and left the princess with a pile of bills and a life insurance policy that didn’t even come close to covering the costs of settling the estate. In real life, the princess had to work three minimum-wage jobs to pay for a realtor’s license and had hustled like the devil every day since.

No, I’m not that naïve little girl anymore. I’d seen too much of life to go back to that kind of thinking. Which meant I had to get over the nervous anticipation of seeing Daniel again. Today would be pure business and I am a confident, independent woman now. That kiss meant nothing to me, and neither did his rejection.

Nope. Not a thing. I can act like it never happened. I’d kissed plenty of men since then. Loads. At least…I had to think hard for a minute…at least three. That was more than enough to know that Daniel isn’t the only guy on the planet. There are plenty of other… massive shoulders supporting muscular necks that smell of wonderful cologne… in the sea; I just haven’t reeled in the right one. But I will. I’m not afraid to love again and I don’t regret a moment of time spent with my mother before she passed. I cherish my memories, grateful that I had love in my life at all. And when I do meet someone new, I will forget all about my childhood crush on Daniel.

I purse my lips, calm my breathing and focus on a circle of fog forming on the glass window. I am so over my best friend’s older brother. Over. Done. Not even a little nervous to see him again. He has to be old and fat and ugly now. Yep. Losing his hair, scarred up from the war like in one of those sci-fi movies. Grotesque and completely unattractive. Has. To. Be.

I turn to make one last circle around the house, making sure everything is in place for the showing before Mr. Ugly arrives. Most of the owners’ furniture is in storage. A couple of nice magazines decorate the coffee table. I brought in flowers after the painters finished changing the pale blue and green walls to neutral beige that I knew would help the place sell. All the family photos are hidden in a drawer upstairs and a table setting straight out of “Realtors R Us” highlights the dining room. Martha Stewart herself would be proud of the crystal and the silver and the perfectly folded napkins in elegant rings next to the impossibly white china.

I have no doubt he will notice none of it or tell it to go find some candleholder its own age.

When Sara told me that Daniel was back in town, and he wanted to buy a house, it felt like fate. It would be an opportunity to prove that I had grown up and moved on, that he meant nothing more to me than what I would feel for any childhood friend, that I could be completely immune to his charm. With Daniel, this is an opportunity to feel like I am the one in charge for the first time in our lives. I am ready for that. More than I’d like to admit. I served my time being the tag-along, annoying younger sibling’s best friend. No more.

I start to straighten the floral arrangement on the dining room table for the hundredth time but stop my obsessive craziness and smack a daisy in frustration. “I doubt he cares about you stupid flowers,” I tell them, sighing at my ridiculous behavior. And the poor daisy lilts over. I think I broke its poor neck—or its heart—because I yelled at it. As I attempt to reconcile with the wronged and innocent flower I hear the deep rumble of an engine approaching outside.

Marching to the front door, I open it to greet him--as I do all of my clients—and watch with my heart in my throat as Daniel rides up on his motorcycle. After parking it, he takes off his helmet, his dark hair gleams in the bright, Texas sunshine. A leather jacket hugs his muscular arms and shoulders while tight denim shows that nothing about him has diminished since I’d last seen him.

In fact, I realize just how much of a boy he’d been at twenty-two. Now he is all man, from the slight lines at the corners of his mouth to the way he moves. Everything about him screams confident, virile male in his prime.

Damn it. So much Mr. Ugly.

This indifference thing might be harder than I thought.

EXCERPT:

My mother insisted on purchasing two of the largest suitcases possible, Louis Vuitton rolling cases in an easily recognizable and slightly obnoxious shade of bright pink. She’d spent more on my luggage than some people did on a car, and they were heavy. I’d loaded them up with my precious books and far too many pairs of shoes before I left. The porter stumbled, losing his grip on the first suitcase, and nearly fell.

I rushed to help, but someone else beat me to it, a tall, mountain of a man. I stopped in my tracks and stared. I may have been drooling. He was, for lack of a better word, beautiful.

Broad chest. Long legs. Strong, muscular arms. Golden, glowing skin. Chestnut hair flowing in riotous curls around his face and down to his shoulders. Eyes in a warm shade of brown. The edge of a tattoo peeking out from under the sleeve of his shirt.

Something unexpected curled in my chest. Was it…lust? I hadn’t felt it in so long I almost didn’t recognize it. But I wasn’t the only person staring at the bronzed god in from of me.

“Heavens to Betsy,” said Hilary under her breath. “I’ve never seen anything so pretty this close up.”

He was pretty, and he was also pissed off, most likely at the owner of the two enormous and ridiculously heavy pink suitcases. Me.

EXCERPT:

Mia turned up the radio as her sedan flew across the slick road.

Let’s Go Crazy.

She was excited about the trip home. She had been living in New York, and despite the close proximity to Boston, she hadn’t seen her sister, Grace, for four months. Mia was just finishing school, and between internships and the huge amount of work she had been putting in to earn her MBA, there just wasn’t any time. She was lucky to have a sister like Grace. She understood when Mia was too busy to talk. And with Grace, she never needed to feel pressured to have a perfect relationship. When they did get a chance to see each other, it was as if they had never been apart.

Though lately Mia had been trying to make extra time to connect with her heartbroken sister, at least on the phone. Grace was just getting on her feet again after a long depression. Her fiancé had pulled a fast one on her, and there had been a few months of Mia visiting her often, trying to coax her off the couch and into therapy. Grace had been absent from work long enough that her job was on the line. She had some savings, but not enough to last her more than a few months.

Grace had resisted at first, but Mia had seen this kind of thing before and had known exactly what to do. In the end, she’d found the right doctor and therapist for her sister and then harassed her until she made, and kept, appointments with them. It took some time, but eventually she had started to come back to herself. Mia credited the meds more than anything, though she knew Grace hated having to take them.

She was back to work now, though, busy again, and they still talked a couple times a week to touch base, more if Grace needed someone to cry to. Mia was relieved that she would have a chance to focus on her for a bit, and was glad the mellow holiday at home wouldn’t distract them too much. There were lots of tears in those weekly calls, and though they’d ebbed away a bit, she couldn’t wait to wrap her arms around her sister in a big bear hug.

She and Grace had grown up at their parents’ place in Boston. It had been even longer since she had seen them, and she couldn’t wait to catch up on all the family gossip. Her mom tended to try to keep family secrets just that: secret. But her dad had let slip that her aunt’s daughter had been working, no joke, as a stripper. Everyone in the family was in a tizzy about it, but were too afraid to confront her. Mia would have loved the opportunity to get the details first hand, but really she had been relieved to find out that her aunt and cousin would not be joining them for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Probably too embarrassed, she thought.

She laughed aloud as the music played. She had never been close with her cousin, but Angie had been known to jump around from school to school, project to project, job to job. Whatever the story was, Mia was sure there would be plenty of secondhand lurid details once she pulled into the driveway. She’d get her mom to talk, even if it took all week.

It was getting late, nearly eleven, and she was eager to get there. She had expected to arrive by nine, but no such luck. The traffic out of the city had lasted for hours. But now she was on the move again. The snow had turned to rain, which meant the roads were pretty clear now, and she pushed on the gas a little harder.

The music on the radio changed, and a moment later Winter Wonderland was blasting through her speakers.

“Aw, yuck!” she shouted at the radio, wrenching the volume down.

It wasn’t even Thanksgiving yet, and already with the Christmas music! The last thing she needed was to get that junk spinning through her head all night long.

She picked up her phone to switch to her playlist. She was an expert at her phone, and could make most of the selections, even texting, without even looking at the thing. One day they’d probably just implant the information into people’s brains somehow, but for now she just had to wing it like everyone else.

But it was late, and she was on the freeway. She needed to look at the screen to select some different music. She checked around her for cops and then waited for a straight stretch of road. She held the phone up to the steering wheel so she could glance back and forth between the screen and the road, scrolling down the list, searching for something classic, something she could sing to, to wake her up a little for the last hour of the drive. More Prince, maybe.

Out of the corner of her eye she saw a movement, something white speeding by her passenger side window. A motorcycle? No.

It was a truck, and it was going way too fast. He was going to cut her off. She dropped her phone and blared her horn, then watched in horror as it tipped onto two wheels, about to flip over right in front of her.

How was this happening?

She steered right to get out of the way. The back end of the truck clipped her car at just the right spot. Just the wrong spot.

She was airborne. There was no sound but for her own blood pumping, ringing in her ears.

Time slowed down.

As her car flipped through the air again and again, her thoughts went blank. Adrenaline rushed through her body as the first airbag went off, but when the car smashed upside down onto the pavement, she only registered the pain.

And then it was over.

She was gone.

Author Bio:

I am happy to call the San Francisco Bay Area home, where I lives with my husband, two kids, one dog and three cats. I started writing at an early age, but have only been writing novels for the past five years. I love the idea of love conquering all, and that is what drove me to begin the Great Escapes series, where the reader follows couples meeting up in exotic locations around the world. In this series, each book is a stand-alone, and each can be read in any order.

But readers, be forewarned, there is a healthy amount of steam in these books!

Thank you for stopping by, and I hope you enjoy Great Escapes!
