Spotlight: Now or Never by Lucy Smoke

Now or Never
Lucy Smoke
(Iris Boys, #1)
Publication date: November 29th 2017
Genres: New Adult, Romance

“Harlow Hampton meets the Iris Boys.”

All I needed was a break. A sign. Something.

Nearly getting run over was not the sign I was looking for, but it’s what I got. That and a group of guys who say they work for something called Iris.

No, thank you.

I had enough to deal with, thank you very much. No brother. No dad. No sanity most of the time. I certainly didn’t need to be dealing with thieves and wild cats and guys that were way too good looking. That is…I didn’t need them until they were all I had left. Now I have to make a decision about my future and whether or not they’re going to be in it.

Spotlight: I Burned Down His House by Jessica Frances

I Burned Down His House
Jessica Frances
(Love at First Crime #3)
Publication date: November 28th 2017
Genres: Adult, Romance, Suspense

She burned his house down, so he lit a fire between them that she could never extinguish.

So, I burned his house down.

It was an accident.

I mean, technically, the dog did it.

Well, the dog helped me to do it.

Did I mention it was an accident?

When circumstances mean I suddenly have a new housemate,

A man who is my ultimate fantasy,

And my entire world is turned upside down by new friends,

And a dog who likes to get me into trouble,

I have to wonder how my life got so crazy.

Add in my neighbor, who is under investigation;

Some unfinished business from the past, which just won’t go away;

Interfering family, who don’t know when to stop;

And mixed signals, making me wonder if fantasies really can come true,

And you have my new, hectic, crazy life.

But, when things take a dangerous turn,

And lives are on the line,

Will we all make it through in one piece?

Or is everything destined to crumble down around us?

Who would have thought that burning down a house would change everything so much?

Then again, as some people say: there is nothing quite like love at first … crime.

EXCERPT:

Trying not to feel like a loser that I have Joey’s number memorized, I dial, hoping like hell he picks up. It has to be in the incredibly early hours of morning, so there is every chance, if he hasn’t come home yet, it’s because he’s out with someone and won’t answer.

After five, drawn-out, torturous rings, he finally picks up.

“What?” he grumbles. I can’t tell if I woke him up, or if he’s just annoyed to be disturbed.

“Hey, Joey, it’s Teagan—”

“Who?”

I pause, annoyed I’m so forgettable he can’t remember who he gave his house key to! “Teagan Bevon, the woman who lives next door?”

“Oh … Oh!” There is finally recognition in his voice. “Right. Look, Teags”—he sounds so distracted I don’t think he even noticed he gave me a nickname—“I’m kinda busy—”

“But—”

“—so I’ll just see you later—”

“Wait!” I cry out, afraid I will hear the dial tone any second.

“Actually, you probably won’t see me later. I’m going to be—”

“I BURNED YOUR HOUSE DOWN!” I scream into the phone and am finally met with silence. “Joey?” I whisper, fearful he already hung up.

“Can you repeat that for me?” he finally gasps out.

“I …” Now I feel nervous. “I … umm … I accidently”—I use too much emphasis on the word, making me sound extra guilty—“burned down your house.”

“Are you okay?”

My heart skips a beat. I just told this man that I burned down his house and his first thought is if I’m okay?

“Some smoke inhalation, but nothing serious. I’m so sorry about your things—”

“How about Karma?”

“Karma got out fine. She’s with the Glovers,” So … maybe she’s not okay. The almost ninety-year-old couple may not be quite at the same speed as Karma.

As he sighs in relief, my hands begin to shake again.

“Joey, I’m so sorry.”

Audio Spotlight: Colorless by Rita Stradling and narrated by Lauri Jo Daniels

To Annabelle Klein, the rules laid down by the Magicians are the mere ramblings of stuffy old men. As far as she’s concerned, the historic Iconoclasts, heretics who nearly destroyed the Magicians so long ago, are nothing but myth. She has much more important matters to worry about.

Heiress to a manor mortgaged down to its candlesticks and betrothed to her loathsome cousin, sixteen-year-old Annabelle doubts the gods could forsake her more.

Then Annabelle is informed of her parents’ sudden and simultaneous deaths, and all of the pigment drips out of her skin and hair, leaving her colourless. Within moments, Annabelle is invisible and forgotten by all who know her.

Living like a wraith in her own home, Annabelle discovers that to regain her color she must solve the mystery behind her parents’ murders and her strange transformation.

Meanwhile, hundreds of the Magicians’ monks, with their all-black eyes and conjoined minds, have usurped control of Annabelle’s family manor. An Iconoclast is rumored to be about—a person who they claim goes unseen, unheard, and lost to memory, yet is the greatest threat to all of Domengrad. For the first time in a hundred years, the monks plan to unleash the dire wolves of old.

Their only target: Annabelle.

Cut off by her family for running away with an actor—who turned out to be using her for publicity—Mel is penniless, homeless, and disgraced. There’s only one place to go, and that’s back to the fiancé she ditched. But instead of her ex, she finds his friend Daveed Rafik. With her unexpected intelligence and distinctive beauty, Melody calls to him in powerful ways. But when the woman he is arranged to marry shows up, Daveed’s highly organized life suddenly gets very complicated.

EXCERPT:

Melody watched him walk away beneath her damp lashes. She’d never really paid much attention to Daveed before. He’d been one of Heath’s friends and always hanging around the periphery of their group, but had sort of kept to himself. Now, though, he’d come to her aid in her hour of need—or more like day of desperation—and a girl couldn’t ignore such chivalry.

As the silence between them grew more awkward by the second, she got up and wandered over to the table, which was covered by papers and post-it notes. Daveed didn’t look up at her at all, so she finally pulled out a chair and sat, forcing a tremulous smile. “What are you doing”

“Huh?” Daveed glanced up at her with a frown, as if just then remembering she was still there. “Oh, making lists. It’s how I keep track of everything I’ve got going on and my responsibilities.”

“Oh.” She picked up one yellow square and squinted at this illegible scrawl before she snatched it away from her.

“Please, don’t touch anything. These are all very important.”

“Right.” She’d never been big on lists or organization herself. Her mother had always had a social secretary to take care of most things for her and when that failed, then Melody preferred to “wing it.” For her life was all about spontaneity, but then again, given how this whole situation with Jefferson Hanks had turned out, maybe planning and consideration was the way to go. While Daveed said nothing more, scowling down at his notes again, she studied him more. Honestly, she really didn’t know the guy very well. From what Heath had told her, Daveed Rafik had served alongside him and their other friend, Murphy Coen, in the Middle East. Melody had always thought of Daveed as a sort of an Arabic James Bond type from the way Heath had bragged about the guy. He graduated Yale at the top of his class, spoke five languages fluently, and thwarted terrorists in a single bound, all without firing a single weapon.

Now, however, as he wrote furiously, his dark brows knit in concentration, she took her first real look at the guy. She’s noticed when he’d first answered the door that he was tall and well-muscled. As she sat beside him at the table, his dark brown hair curled above the collar of his white button-down shirt and reflected hints of gold beneath the lights. Yep. He was gorgeous, no doubt about it. If you went for the romance-novel cover sheikh type. Which she didn’t, at least not up to this point.

Read an excerpt from Isabella Unashamed by Helen R. Davis and Carolina Casas

Isabella of Castile is known as Europe’s first great queen. Renowned for her marriage to Ferdinand of Aragon and birthing of modern day Spain, Isabella is also known as the queen who launched the Inquisition, completed the Reconquista and expelled the Jews from her nation. Not long after her triumph in 1492, her dynasty came apart and unraveled, and it was whispered by many that the Trastamara line was cursed.

But, What if Isabella had been wiser and not expelled the Jews, some of the very people who ironically helped put her on the throne of Castile? What if Isabella had had more foresight and had her successor be Catalina, who, although the youngest, was the most like her and the wisest of her children? How would the power balance of 15th and 16th century Europe shifted if Catalina had been the powerful queen regnant of Spain and not one of the ‘merry wives’ of Windsor?

A joint effort, Isabella Unashamed is written by two authors from very different cultural backgrounds who have nonetheless joined together to create a haunting portrait of Spain’s most famous queen, as well as a glimpse of what might have been had Isabella been wiser.

Excerpt

Isabella balked at the suggestion. “Convivencia?” She asked, her face a mask of outrage.

“You think this is what this is?” She walked to Talavera. “This is not some sick show like the Infidels did. This is real! It will ensure the trust of nations and my subjects’ obedience. What better than to give them a second chance while also making it clear that those who defy the Crown will be shown no mercy?”

“Your Majesty, I say this as a friend and as your adviser who has supported you and your husband’s enterprise. Do not do this. The Infidels did this and turn our flock against us.”

“Convivencia.” She smirked. She released a little laugh. “The people love to say that the Infidels showed mercy to those who renounced on their realm so they could live comfortably, but their words are as stupid as their view of the world is. If you must know, and I am sure you do but for some reason you still desire to play the deaf man who refused to listen to reason, that twisted practice was a myth. A lie that the Infidels that sold to our once loyal flock so they could turn their backs on us. They said that they would show them mercy but instead they received cruelty. When Ferdinand and I arrived at their gorgeous palace we were appalled to discover the hundreds of Christian imprisoned underground in the caves. Half of them are still shouting, waking their remaining family members. One of their wives came to me crying, begging me to behead her husband. ‘Why?’ I asked her and she told me ‘Don’t you know what the Infidels did to him, Your Majesty? They broke him and he is too helpless that he wakes me and my children at night. We have tried everything; our local priest has told him to pray but prayer has led us nowhere.’ The Infidels promised him to leave in peace as long as he became a spy, he refused and you know why?”

“Faith.”

She gave a colder laugh. “No. I wish it were that but alas, it was ambition.” Talavera’s brow furrowed in confusion. Isabella continued: “When he heard what the Christians and Jews had to endure in other

Islamic realms, he was horrified. He refused to become their spy because he didn’t want to be treated like a leper. Christians are not allowed to live in the same neighborhoods as their Muslim overlords, in most places, they are not allowed to ride ahead of Muslims or demand justice if some wrong was done against them. By law, Christians are required to give their place on the road to a fellow Muslim, but God forbid if they demand the same respect. Christian cemeteries had to be built as far away as possible from Muslim ones and those who fail to pay the special tax on time aren’t allowed to practice their faith anymore. That, if you ask me, is not a life worth living and he saw it too.”

She sat on an arm chair and beckoned Talavera to do the same. “I know where my loyalties lie. With the people of Castile and my husband’s realm, and as such I am convinced that we are doing the right thing. God is on my side and so is his mother whose mercy knows no bound.”

“Your Majesty, you speak with great wisdom but I am afraid that many people won’t see it that way.”

“Then let them talk. It is not their business to decide what is better for them that is why they have me. The best decisions are not the most popular ones but once they see how prosperous our nation becomes they will cheer. Now leave me, I am tired and I wish to speak to my husband alone.”

Talavera sighed. She was an impossible and stubborn woman. He sent someone to fetch her husband. When Ferdinand arrived at Isabella’s chambers he asked how the meeting had gone.

“As well as it can be expected.” He nodded, giving her a small smile then sat in the same armchair that Talavera had occupied minutes earlier, facing her. “We have committed ourselves to serve an ideal. That ideal can only be achieved if we are united. You will not agree with this decision now, but trust me, in time you will see that this was for the best.”

Her debut novel “Isabella Unashamed” was co-written with the author of “Cleopatra Unconquered” & “The Most Happy”, Helen R. After a frightful and sleepless night, she was introduced to the legend of King Arthur and his knights through Sir Thomas Mallory’s epic “Le Morte d’Arthur” which started her fascination with the medieval period and later with other eras. This, along with her curiosity, has led her to delve into the realm of alternate history.

Spotlight: There is Always a Tomorrow by Anna Belfrage

There is Always a Tomorrow is the ninth book in Anna Belfrage’s time slip series featuring time traveller Alexandra Lind and her seventeenth century husband, Matthew Graham.

It is 1692 and the Colony of Maryland is still adapting to the consequences of Coode’s Rebellion some years previously. Religious tolerance in the colony is now a thing of the past, but safe in their home, Alex and Matthew Graham have no reason to suspect they will become embroiled in the ongoing religious conflicts—until one of their sons betrays their friend Carlos Muñoz to the authorities.

Matthew Graham does not leave his friends to rot—not even if they’re papist priests—so soon enough most of the Graham family is involved in a rescue attempt, desperate to save Carlos from a sentence that may well kill him.

Meanwhile, in London little Rachel is going through hell. In a matter of months she loses everything, even her surname, as apparently her father is not Master Cooke but one Jacob Graham. Not that her paternity matters when her entire life implodes.

Will Alex and Matthew be able to help their unknown grandchild? More importantly, will Rachel want their help?

Excerpt

Matthew’s face darkened. “Samuel is gone north, to visit with another Mohawk tribe. And as to Qaachow, he’s waiting for us by the old Indian village—I spoke to him when I went to the privy earlier.”

“Without telling me.”

“Aye. Qaachow wanted to surprise you—has a gift for you, from Samuel.”

“Oh.” She threw him a dark look. “You should have told me he was here.” She’d have changed to her new bodice, put on a clean apron. Alex scrubbed at a stain on her hands—preserving blackberries always left her and her clothes covered in purple stains—before setting to work on her hair. Matthew’s brows shot up. She flushed under his scrutiny. “What? I’m just making sure I look okay.”

“Ah.” He moved close enough to set a finger to her nose. “For me or for him?”

“For him? Don’t be an idiot. But I like looking neat before our visitors.”

“Do you now?” His breath tickled her cheek. “And if I want you looking dishevelled?” He tugged out her pins, and her hair cascaded down her shoulders.

“Before others?” she asked, leaning towards him. He cupped her face and kissed her—deeply. She moved even closer, relishing the strength of his embrace, his familiar scent.

“No,” he replied once he’d released her. “My wife, in all her dishevelment, is for my eyes only.”

He helped her bring some order into her hair, strong fingers combing it back from her face and twisting it into its customary heavy bun. Hand in hand, they resumed their walk, and soon enough the glade which housed the remains of the old Indian village came into view. Alex shivered. This was where Matthew had almost died, pinned beneath a tree. This was where Samuel had been conceived—or so they both thought—and maybe this had defined their son’s fate. Or maybe it was the fault of the man waiting for them, sitting so still it took Alex some time to discover him among the shadows.

“Alex.” Qaachow stood up. Fluid in his movements, he approached them, his footsteps muffled by the thick moss beneath. He was still an attractive man, despite his lined face and the grey hair, long enough to brush his shoulder-blades. Just like Matthew, he retained a lean and muscled build, testament to daily use of his body. The belt that held his tomahawk and knife clung to narrow hips, his long legs were encased in leather leggings, adorned with the same intricate embroidery that decorated his shirt.

“From Samuel,” he said, handing Alex a heavy bundle. “I should have come by earlier, but Thistledown was ailing and I could not leave her.”

“Is she doing better?”

Qaachow’s mouth softened into a smile. “If not, I would not be here.”

Alex nodded, no more, carefully undoing the strings that held the bundle closed. A pelt. A beautiful, thick wolf pelt, shifting from the purest of whites to grey. An impersonal if precious gift; Alex handed the pelt to Matthew.

“He killed the wolf himself,” Qaachow said, dark eyes regarding her intently.

“I’d have preferred for him to come home,” she replied.

“He prepared the pelt as well,” Qaachow continued. “It took him hours.”

Alex shrugged. “I don’t need a wolfskin. I need my son.”

“But he is elsewhere,” Qaachow replied.

“You sent him away on purpose,” Alex said, ignoring Matthew’s frown.

“I did not.” Qaachow crossed his arms over his chest. “He asked to go—he knew this was an important mission. His tribe’s future may depend on it.”

She turned away, needing some moments to regain control over her features. His tribe? He was hers! Matthew placed a hand on her shoulder, but she shrugged it off. Her son, choosing to depart on some excursion north instead of coming home to be with her. He’d always come home over harvest, always!

“Don’t think too badly of him,” Qaachow said. “At times, he finds it difficult, to be caught in between.”

She nodded, no more, still with her back to them. “And he thinks it isn’t difficult for us?”

“He’s a young man,” Qaachow said, as if that explained everything.

“This has nothing to do with his youth!” She whirled. “This is about how you stole him. My son, my baby boy, and you lured him away from me!”

“Alex,” Matthew said, “This doesn’t help.”

Her breath came in deep gulps, her vision blurred, and she wanted to hurt someone, make them feel the pain she was suffering.

“Nothing helps! Nothing.” She turned on Qaachow. “I will never forgive you for stealing my son. Never. And to this day, I regret having saved your son and woman from starvation. If I hadn’t—”

“You don’t mean that,” Matthew interrupted.

She gave herself a little hug. No, of course she didn’t. But she liked it that Qaachow flinched at her words.

“He’s mine,” she said. “Mine!”

“He makes his own path,” Qaachow replied.

“One you set him on. And now he’s so conflicted he won’t even come to see me, and how am I supposed to bear it? How?” Tears spilled down her cheeks.

“Like we all bear loss,” Qaachow said. “With dignity.”

At that moment, she was tempted to slap him. Who was he to preach to her about loss? Had he lost his son to others like she had? Had he… Then she remembered just how much he had lost: his first wife, his children to smallpox, his hereditary lands to the white man’s incursion. Once, the Susquehannock ruled all this land, now they were a refugee remnant obliged to become Mohawks to survive.

“Calm yourself, lass,” Matthew said softly, and that had her shoving him aside and retreating to the further end of the clearing.

About the Author

Anna was raised abroad, on a pungent mix of Latin American culture, English history and Swedish traditions. As a result she’s multilingual and most of her reading is historical- both non-fiction and fiction. Possessed of a lively imagination, she has drawers full of potential stories, all of them set in the past. She was always going to be a writer – or a historian, preferably both. Ideally, Anna aspired to becoming a pioneer time traveller, but science has as yet not advanced to the point of making that possible. Instead she ended up with a degree in Business and Finance, with very little time to spare for her most favourite pursuit. Still, one does as one must, and in between juggling a challenging career Anna raised her four children on a potent combination of invented stories, historical debates and masses of good food and homemade cakes. They seem to thrive…

For years she combined a challenging career with four children and the odd snatched moment of writing. Nowadays Anna spends most of her spare time at her writing desk. The children are half grown, the house is at times eerily silent and she slips away into her imaginary world, with her imaginary characters. Every now and then the one and only man in her life pops his head in to ensure she’s still there.

Other than on her website, www.annabelfrage.com, Anna can mostly be found on her blog, http://annabelfrage.wordpress.com – unless, of course, she is submerged in writing her next novel. You can also connect with Anna on FacebookTwitter and Goodreads.
