Spotlight: Renegade by Mallory McCartney

“The time for Kiero’s reign in prosperity is over.”

Six years before the Black Dawn Rebellion, Adair Stratton and Emory Fae are following in their parent’s footsteps and living at The Academy, a home for those who are gifted. The pressure to uphold the future of their parent’s dream falls on them. An outcast and feared by most, Adair longs to break away from the expectations dictating his future. Even if Emory tries to make him see differently. An unexpected group of friends keep him there, but as whispers of unexplained disappearances start reaching from the capital, Adair starts to doubt The Academy is all it seems.

An unexpected visit ignites new tensions as the roguish king from across the Black Sea, Tadeas Maher of the Shattered Isles, and his heir, Marquis Maher sail to Kiero. Notorious for their pirating and wrath- for the first time in years, they demand the Fae’s listen to their proposition for a new treaty, holding the news of Nei’s father’s abrupt death over them. Caught in the middle of politics- Adair and Emory, with the help of their best friends Brokk and Memphis search for the one thing that matters most- finding out the truth.

In this gripping prequel to Black Dawn, their world is tipped upside down as unlikely alliances are made. War ravages through Kiero and is torn apart by acclaimed Kings. Through the throes of betrayal, lies, hidden magic and love, Adair is faced with a life changing decision- to fight or to bow to the darkness within him.

He collided back into the present so hard he rolled over and emptied the contents of his stomach. Gasping for breath, he threw up his iron walls, sealing them tight, and the well of voices quieted until it was just him, only to notice how silent outside the tent was. The hairs on his arm rose as he silently stood, slinging his pack over his shoulder and unsheathing his weathered sword. Everything made sense. How hard Tadeas pushed them to reach the capital, how loud they were being. It was practically ensuring Cesan would come sniffing. To fall into the king’s trap. Only for Tadeas to kill him with no chance of justice. To hear both sides.

Rage ripped through him of how fast Roque had risked them all, had bent to the claim of being King. What did Cesan know? What was Roque afraid would be found? Cold sweat soaked through his shirt as he pushed the thoughts down for now. The firelight danced outside, and he could see Brokk and Alby’s silhouettes, their voices a low murmur. That’s when he heard the howling. Distant at first, like a humming in the night. Then drawing unnaturally closer, faster, the sounds of hundreds. He shot out of the tent, taking in his friends bathed in the glow from the fire, all of them frozen. It was the same effect as losing all sense of clarity. The lurching panic, and then helplessness, as you grappled to hold onto anything.

The screaming started first at the north end of the camp. Brokk stood, all color draining from his face. Memphis spun, taking in the nightmare forming. Their bodies were like sleek armored plates, gleaming and muscular. Their elongated torsos were like serpents, twisting and flexing as they propelled forward with long black legs. Their bald bodies shimmered like water against the firelight, reflecting their drooling maws and inky teeth. Their orange eyes gleamed with madness as they cut down through tents and bodies. He had heard of creatures of dark ancient magic before. Ones that were told to children to keep their fears heightened and curiosity in check. But as he saw the first monster rip the throat out of one of Tadeas’s men, this was the farthest thing from bedtime stories of old.

Utter chaos broke out as Brokk threw himself forward, shifting in one motion, as his colossal paws thundered, shaking the earth. Alby drew his sword, and immediately became invisible. Roars rose from the creatures as he assaulted them, unseen. Heart thundering, Memphis drew his own. Everything moved in slow motion. He felt himself take in the numbers of the monsters as they poured into the camp, their rage and their might crashed into their own. It was a battle of tyrants. Yelling, he bounded forward, his ability already two steps ahead of him, reacting in his fear. His talons exploded, slashing their dark minds, grasping their will, their bodies, holding them still as Brokk made his landing blow. He ducked. Slashed. Growling, thrusting his blade forward. His ability cut and unbound the creature’s minds. He was a darkened duet, of body and ability, the two forces creating a lethal harmony. Their inky talons, and severed bodies filled his senses as he heard The King of the Shattered Isles roar.

Exclusive Excerpt

“Ekko?” Dom’s panicked voice came from the doorway.

My eyes left Levi and went to Dom.  He took one look at me and immediately directed his attention to Ryan.  Instead of coming to me, Dom took slow, deliberate steps toward Ryan. My body grew tense.  Levi must have noticed because he squeezed my shoulder a little tighter. A few more men, who had to have been with Dom, appeared in the doorway, but I couldn’t pay attention to them.

Dom was closing in on Ryan, who continued to walk backward until his back was up against the wall.  Dom’s hand shot out and gripped Ryan around the throat.

“Why is there blood on her face?” Dom seethed.

“It…it was her own fault,” Ryan stammered.

Dom’s fingers squeezed a little tighter.  “I’m sorry, did I just hear you say it was her fault?”

Ryan’s eyes grew wide.

One of the guys in the doorway, who bared a resemblance to Levi, but had longer hair that was somewhere between blonde and brown, warned, “Dom’s a crazy motherfucker, man.  You might want to consider how you answer that question.”

I recognized the guy from the night I was nearly kidnapped.  He had been there with Dom that night, but I couldn’t remember his name.

Another guy, with shorter dark hair and a body that was just as nice as the rest of them, added, “Yeah.  I remember what he did years ago to the guy who thought beating and sexually assaulting Levi and Cruz’s sister-in-law was acceptable.  Dom had no personal attachment to that girl and her ex was begging for mercy when Dom was through with him. I can’t imagine what he’d do to someone who hurt a woman who was special to him.”

I gasped while Ryan’s eyes shifted back and forth.

“She was reaching for her phone and pushed me,” Ryan explained.  “I pushed her away from me and she fell.”

Now Dom’s gaze looked a lot like Levi’s did when he first arrived…lethal.

“You pushed her?”

“She pushed me first!” Ryan tried to reason.

Keeping his hand at Ryan’s throat, Dom stepped to the side and looked over at me.  “Do you see her?”

Ryan didn’t answer.

I asked you a question!” Dom roared.

“Yes, I see her.”  Ryan’s voice was small.

“So, that woman, who is maybe a hundred and ten pounds, moved toward you to get her phone that you had, and you pushed her?  I don’t like seeing my woman with blood on her face and, lucky for you, I need to see to her right now, so you’re going to give me her phone without another minute of delay.”

Ryan quickly pulled the phone out of his pocket and handed it to Dom.

Not taking his eyes off Ryan, Dom called, “Ekko, come here.”

I was still stuck on Dom calling me his woman that I couldn’t move.

Dom realized I hadn’t moved and turned his head toward me.  With his gaze laser-focused on me, he urged, “Ekko, come here.”

Levi brought his hand to my lower back and gave me a nudge.  I moved toward Dom.

When I was standing next to him, Dom asked, “Why did you come here?”

My lip quivered, and I dropped my gaze to the ground.

His voice went soft and he said, “Sugar, look at me.”

When I looked at Dom, his voice, still gentle, asked, “What did you come here for?”

“I don’t have a ton of nice clothes, but I had a few things here that I wanted to get before tonight.  I wanted to look pretty for our date. But Ryan wouldn’t let me get my things.”

An Autumn in Paris

by Alix Nichols Publication Date: November 2, 2018 Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Books by Alix Nichols: Amazon

Because of Audrey Hepburn, I have foolishly… a) bought into the whole “Paris is always a good idea” thing without any offscreen evidence, b) uprooted my son and left my bittersweet memories behind, c) allowed Thomas—the handsome, caring, way-out-of-my-league vet—to disrupt the dull, desensitized life I had self-prescribed for my Broken Heart Syndrome. Behind his easy smile and swoon-worthy pecs, Thomas conceals an open wound. No matter how hot his kisses or how genuine his affection, he’s still reeling. He can’t move on. And I can’t risk falling for him. I have a child to raise—a preteen boy who needs his mom to be all there. But as autumn strips the trees of their leaves, falling for Thomas is exactly what I do. Throwing caution to the wind, I dare to hope for a future with him… …until the past comes knocking. Can we handle it or will it break us forever?

Spotlight: Long Live the Beautiful Hearts by Emma Scott

Never again would I allow my heart to become the plaything of someone else.
Never again would I let a man (or men) come between me and my goals.
Never again would I love without feeling the fullness of that love in return.
Not until I knew it was real. And if that took me a lifetime to find, so be it.

Those were my vows, and after all that had happened with Connor and Weston, I was determined to keep them. To protect my heart.
And then he came home, and my vows became his promises.

He held my heart in his hands with reverence and care.
He helped me find my soul’s greatest purpose in life.
He loved me with a love so pure and vibrant, I knew I’d never feel anything like it in a hundred lifetimes.
It was real.

Until it wasn’t.
Until it all came crashing down when I discovered the deep love I thought I’d found was nestled in a web of lies—so soft and silken I hadn’t noticed it was there.
Until it was too late.

 BRING DOWN THE STARS

I fell for Connor Drake. I didn’t want to; I fought against it, but I fell in love with him anyway. With his words. With his poetry. With him. The gentleness and beauty of his soul that speaks directly to mine. He writes as if he can feel my heart, hear its cadence and compose the exact right lyrics to accompany every beat and flow.

I’m in love with Connor…so why do I feel an inexplicable pull to his best friend, Weston? Grouchy, sullen, brooding Weston Turner, who could cut you down with a look. Fiercely intelligent with a razor sharp wit and acid tongue, he’s the exact opposite of Connor in every way, and yet there’s electricity in the air between us. The thorny barbs Weston wraps around himself can’t keep me away.

But the more time I spend with these men, the more tangled and confused my emotions become. When they both sign up for the Army Reserves during a time of increasing strife in the Middle East, I fear I’ll never unravel my own heart that sometimes feels as if it will tear straight down the middle…for both of them.
