Chapter One

Liam's completion of flight training had rather fortuitous timing. Liam was one of the members of Lex's security team before Darren moved in. Darren snagged the other Lycan on the way to the airport with the subtle threat to "move your ass and don't breathe a word to anyone." Darren looked out the window of the Konstantine jet and didn't see ocean, but he didn't know how close they were to Dublin Airport.

Reading Liam's thoughts would have been easy enough, if Darren hadn't happily discovered that he could block that ability. So, he hadn't been subjected to the "have you lost your fucking mind" lecture that Liam likely received from Lex. Or the "you let anything happen to him, I'll kill you, myself" that undoubtedly followed said lecture.

Darren spent the entirety of the flight thinking of his mate. The pain in her voice, on her face, and the tears in her eyes, all as a result of Darren not claiming her. Pain, he had his own. Not claiming her was a physical, mental hell--it was pain from head to toe. But, he had reasoned that he'd rather live with that pain, than put Cass through one second of his impressive--or not--collection of screw-ups. Not to mention, all the bullshit that came with being King.

I'd rather cut off my own head than cause her pain like I saw that day.

Which is why they were over European airspace, because Cass was in Ireland. She left to escape him.

Because seeing me hurt her.

"Darren, we're ten minutes out from Dublin."

Liam's voice cleared his guilt-filled thoughts. He ran his hands through his hair and realized he needed to go splash some water on his face. "Thanks."

"No problem."

A minute later, he stood in front of the mirror and frowned. One of his buddies in college looked like he was in a perpetual hangover. Darren's roommate used to tease the guy, telling him that he looked like he'd been ridden hard and put away wet. That saying pretty much summed up the reflection in the mirror.

Maybe I should stop off and get a haircut, buy a new shirt and jeans.

He probably would do that, if it didn't take much time. His primary objective was to find Cass and get them back to the plane as soon as possible. Hell, he might as well tell Liam to file a return flight plan for, what, five hours from now? Yeah, that should do it. He hated the thought of claiming his mate in the bedroom on the plane, but damned if he was going to wait to get back to Raleigh. And, they wouldn't be in Ireland for very long. Oh no. In and out, that was his plan. They'd be back in no time.

***

Liam kept up with Darren's footsteps, barely.

"Still don't understand why you wouldn't want another beer. That may have been the best I've ever had. We should take a European beer tasting trip, just for comparison, though. German ales are pretty damned good." They'd only gone in the last bar because Darren caught Cass's scent.

"Not interested." Glancing around the crowded Temple Bar section of Dublin, Darren wondered why Cass would be there. She was private, definitely not the type to hang out in tourist spots.

"Or we could just stay here and sample whiskey. All the whiskey."

Technically, that didn't sound like too bad of a plan, if he weren't searching for his missing mate. "You should get on your knees and thank God that you can't get cirrhosis."

Liam snorted just as Darren thought he'd, again, picked up on Cass's scent. He froze mid stride and almost took out a group of people. Peering inside the closest bar, he inhaled deeply and looked for her glossy black hair. Nada.

Shit.

Darren turned, making a complete circle so he could visualize everything around him. His frustration was growing. Cass was so close, and he needed to see her. Feel her. Wrap her in his arms. Drop to his knees and apologize for being a colossal ass. Spend the next century begging her forgiveness. Then spend the rest of his life making her happy.

The sounds of barf splattering the pavement shook him out of his thoughts.

"This"--he pointed down at the moaning human in front of him--"is what all the whiskey gets you."

Liam glanced down with disdain as they stepped around the human. "Not me." He waved a negligent hand. "Higher tolerance and all that."

"Mmm hmm." Looking around, again, Darren barely restrained a growl. Cass's scent grew fainter, and he was no damned closer to finding her.

Going to lose my motherfucking mind.

Material brushed his arm, and Darren snarled as his head snapped around. "Hey, do you mind holding my jacket while I tie my shoe?"

What the fuck? Darren snatched the jacket and Liam bent, after casting a pointed glare toward Darren's hands. Claws had already punched through the tips, and if he were a betting person, he'd put money on his eyes glowing. Taking a deep breath and closing his eyes, he slipped on his polarized Ray Bans, covered both fists with the jacket and willed himself to calm.

"No problem."

Biggest white lie ever. If Darren spent two more seconds out there without Liam's assistance, he'd likely have shifted and torn a bloody path through the Temple Bar district.

They needed to get out of public, check into a room and Darren needed to sleep off any jet lag. Then come sunrise, he'd try again.

Liam stood and cast a worried glance at Darren. "Okay?"

Not in the slightest. "Fine. Let's get something to eat, go find a room, and search again tomorrow."

Liam almost seemed to slouch in relief. "Sounds good. We'll hit the roads in the morning."

He confirmed that with a small nod. And I'll spend another sleepless night without her.

Read an excerpt from As You Were by Lee Piper

They say love is beautiful.

They lie.

Love is a dark, broken man with whiskey-colored eyes. Love is knowing he will never return my feelings. It is the final chord of a guitar riff as it bleeds into silence.

Love is Zeke Danton.

I convinced myself I needed him. I thought there was no one better to record my debut album with…

I was wrong.

Encased in layers of ice, he wears his pain like a protective shield.

Wanting what I can’t have might ruin me. But so help me, I crave his destruction.

Excerpt

What is it with me and storms? What is it that lures me to the tempest, delights in the chaos, and dances in the turmoil?

I wish I knew.

If I did, I wouldn’t have pressed my body against Zeke’s. I wouldn’t have pulled his mouth to mine. And I wouldn’t have kissed him.

He stills. For a brief moment, Zeke is immobile. Then a low growl sounds. He wraps one arm around my waist, shoves his hand in my hair, and kisses me back. Lord, does he kiss me back. Zeke’s mouth is firm, demanding, in complete control. He bites my bottom lip, causing me to yelp, and then sweeps his tongue inside.

My hands slide to his shoulders, nails scraping against the fabric of his T-shirt. I wish it was bare skin; I wish I could score his flesh and claim this whirlwind as mine.

“You’re wrong,” I gasp, between hot, desperate kisses. “Everyone belongs to someone.”

Fingers hook in the waistband of my pajama shorts and yank me closer. “You reckon that someone is you?” His gaze turns pitying. “Baby girl, you’ve got mistake written all over you.” A large hand skims the back of my thigh, hitching my leg up to wrap around his waist. Zeke drives his hips forward and grunts.

“Jerk.”

He’s hard.

“Siren.”

I’m wet.

“Don’t you dare stop,” I warn.

“Not a chance.”

My head lolls back.

“Give me your mouth. I need to taste you.” His lips devour mine while I hold him close, succumbing to the bliss of lips and tongue.

“Jesus fuck. You taste like cherries.”

“It’s my moisturizer.”

Zeke licks and nips his way down the column of my neck. When he reaches the juncture of my collarbone, he groans. “Freckles. You’re fucking killing me.” Sharp teeth bite my skin. Hard.

Knees? Gone.

Pale skin? Bruised.

Cares given? None. Not a one.

Thankfully, I’m lifted by two muscular arms before my ass hits the ground. With both of my legs wrapped around his hips, Zeke stalks to the closest available surface. The sharp cold of the marble countertop against my bare thighs is unexpected. I hiss.

Wrenching my head back by the hair, Zeke takes one of my nipples in his mouth, sucking it through the fabric of my tank top. I hiss again.

“I’m gonna own this body,” he rumbles, his hand palming my breast. “Every last inch will be mine.”

“Promises, promises,” I pant.

“You think I’m lying?” His eyes sear mine.

“I barely know you.”

“I don’t fucking lie.” Straightening, he rocks his hips. The hard cock barely contained in his jeans rubs against my swollen clit.

My eyes roll back in my head. “Then I guess we have something in common.”

He grunts.

“It’s the start of a beautiful relationship,” I joke.

“Shut the fuck up.”

“Make me.”

Q&A With the Author:

1.  Describe yourself in 50 words or less.
A fluffy, hard-working, friendly, introvert who loves writing
2. What do you love most in the world?
My family
3. What inspired you to become an Author?
First, my dad. Second, my mother-in-law. Third, my husband’s encouragement and technical help. My dad encouraged my writing even when I was young. My husband’s mom loved reading romances and told me I should write them based on the long letters I wrote each week. My husband is always supportive and provides the help I need as well as encouragement.
4. What is your favorite Winter / Holiday tradition?
Opening gifts on Christmas Eve after my husband reads the Christmas story from the Bible. Then, depending on the weather and our health, we may go to the Christmas Eve service at church.
5. What is your trick for getting past writer's block? And what advice do you have for other authors who are struggling to tell their story?
When you don’t know what to write there are two tricks that help. One, simply write in all caps THE GIANT METOR HIT HERE and move on to come back later. Two, begin writing as if you are explaining the story to a friend. Soon you will be writing the story and can edit later.
6. Now that we've gotten to know each other, tell me a story. It can be long or short. From your childhood or last week. Funny, sad, or somewhere in between. Just make sure it's yours. What's your story?
When our youngest learned who was Santa, she said that wasn’t fair because I had known what was in my stocking every year. That year, she had wrapped a tiny gift she’d gotten using her allowance and hidden it in my stocking so I’d have a surprise. She’s done that each year since. Soon other members of our immediate family picked up on this and do the same. These are just small, inexpensive gifts, but they’re nice surprises for us on Christmas morning. It’s our own special family tradition.

EXCERPT:

LYRNESSUS
THRITY FOUR, Briseis and Mynes
1262 BCE

“YOUR KINGDOM SOMEDAY, little one.” Briseis rested her hands beneath her round belly, as the child stretched against her ribs. Leaning to the side, she attempted to avoid the uncomfortable tightness building at her lower back. The ache eased and she breathed easy again. Standing from the reclining couch, Briseis walked to the balcony overlooking Lyrnessus’ fields. If she squint her eyes, she could just make out the pale blue of the horizon across the Bay of Edremit. Much farther to the north, she knew Troy stood as the shining citadel of the East. “In another time, that would’ve been yours. I’d thought it mine, before―” Another pain doubled her and she gripped the banister. “By the balls of Zeus! What’s happening?”

Your daughter seeks the light …

Briseis looked around the chamber. “Who’s there?”

Have no fear, daughter, I am with you.

Another pain, this time much sharper and stronger, ripped across her belly and a gush of bloody water splashed at her feet. “Bree! Come quickly! Bree!”

The princess’ chamber door flew open, as the maid servant took in the scene before her. “My lady! By the gods, it’s your time!”

Briseis’ eyes widened in fear. “So soon? I’m not ready. I have―” Her knees buckled.

“My lady!” Bree swept to Briseis’ side, lifting the princess to her feet, half carrying her to the chamber bed.

“The pain. By the … balls of … Zeus. I.can.scarce.breathe.”

There is glory in your pain, Briseis.

“Bree, who else is here?”

“No one, yet,” she said, tucking a sheet about the princess. Bree ran to the door, yelling down the cavernous hall for the midwife. Within moments a gaggle of women flew through the door clucking about the impending royal birth.

Briseis’ scream startled them all. The midwife was at the princess’ side in the blink of an eye, pulling back the privacy sheet. Her hands firmly palpated Briseis’ belly. Without a word, she pushed Briseis’ thighs apart. Her eyes widened.

“What’s wrong?” Briseis asked, tears spilling down her hot cheeks.

The midwife pressed her lips together in a grim line. “My lady, this will be a difficult birth. I must put my hand inside of you to confirm my suspicions.”

“Do it!” Briseis screamed as another pain wracked her body. She groaned in agony as the midwife’s hand pressed into her. “By the gods …”

Bree pressed a cool cloth to her lady’s forehead and cheek.

“The child is breech,” the midwife pronounced, wiping her hands on a towel. A hush settled around the chamber. They all knew it was likely a death sentence to mother, child, or both.

Briseis wept. “No. No. By the gods, no!” Another pain tore through her.

Bree dipped the cooling cloth in the water basin again. “Can nothing be done? Can you save Princess Briseis?”

Briseis rolled back against the cushions. “Save my child, please.”

If that is your wish …

Yes, save my child. “Save my child. Take me instead.”

Bree’s face whitened. “What’s she saying?”

The midwife answered, “What all women say, when faced with such a choice.”

A dusty swirl of air blew into the chamber, snuffing out the oil lamps. The women froze, as a tall, glittering woman emerged from the small storm. Her gown flashed silver and gold. They fell to their knees, heads bowed, the goddess’ name on their lips … Eleithyia.

The goddess glided to Briseis’ side, stars blinking along the hem of her gown as she moved. She reached out a pale, cool hand to Briseis’ forehead. “Calm yourself, daughter. I’m here.”

Briseis smiled weakly. “Gratitude, Goddess.”

Eleithyia signaled to Bree. “You appear a strong maid. Help me set her onto her knees and place her hands on your shoulders.” She looked to the midwife. “Watch. Learn.”

The midwife nodded, as Briseis was placed into position.

The goddess moved her hands on either side of Briseis’ hard belly, running her palms flat against the lower abdomen. “Now, push your daughter to the light. Push like a warrior afield. Push for your life and for hers.”

Briseis cried out in agony, her limbs shaking with effort. Blood spilled as the child’s buttocks crowned.

“Hold your lady tightly.” Eleithyia’s voice was steady, as her hands worked calmly. Gently, she pulled each leg to length. “Push, Briseis.” The goddess, holding the babe with both hands, slightly turned the torso, releasing a shoulder blade and freeing the arm. Then, repeated the same for the other arm. The women gasped as the child hung half-suspended, face down, from Briseis’ body. Eleithyia positioned one hand on the baby’s chest, while the fingers of her other hand cradled the neck and head. “One last push, Briseis. Victory is yours with this battle.”

Briseis’ fingers dug into Bree’s shoulders. She screamed with her final effort, as the goddess guided the slippery child to the light. The princess collapsed against her maid, weeping with her exertions and aching body. Gently, Bree lay Briseis down.

Eleithyia handed the limp newborn to the midwife. “Rub the baby with clean linen, until she cries.” Turning to Briseis, she said, “You’ve won this battle, but you’ll lose the war.”

“What do you mean? What war?”

The goddess stood to her full height, sparkling in the dimly lit room. “The one inside of your heart, daughter.” With the ominous words still hanging in the air, Eleithyia’s image shimmered to nothing.

The midwife stared at the spot the goddess had stood. “By all that is sacred, I never thought in all my days to witness this. Blessed be our princess and her child.”

“Bring me my daughter,” Briseis said, proudly. Once the weight of her baby was settled in her arms, she smiled and joyful tears filled her eyes. “Phila, for love conquers all.”
