Audio Spotlight: The Walker on the Cape by Mike Martin

Synopsis: A man's body is found on the Cape in a small fishing community on the East Coast. At first, everyone thinks it's a heart attack or stroke. But then it is discovered that he was poisoned. Who would do this and why?

Finding that out falls to Sergeant Winston Windflower of the RCMP along with his trusted sidekick, Eddie Tizzard. Along the way, they discover that there are many more secrets hidden in this small community and powerful people who want to keep it that way.

Windflower also discovers two more things: a love of living in a small community that is completely different from his upbringing in a remote Indian reserve and maybe the love of his life. He gets a taste of East Coast food and hospitality as well as a sense of how crime and corruption can linger beneath the surface or hide in the thick blanket of fog that sometimes creeps in from the nearby Atlantic Ocean.

About the Narrator: Francis G. Kearney

Following college and many years as a local entertainer and actor I eventually entered the business world and a career of building and selling multiple successful enterprises.

In 1985 I purchased an aviation business and while building a very successful business also earned multiple movie credits as a helicopter camera ship pilot - https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0443932/?ref_=nv_sr_1 - among other services, and flew the camera helicopter for London Weekend Television's mini series "Piece of Cake" in 1988. I have an extensive aviation background from helicopters through turboprop and jet aircraft, and a deep knowledge of all things aviation.

I have always been an insatiable reader with a love of history - the ultimate story, and anything military - especially if it flies. My evolution into narration and the joy of storytelling is the culmination of many years of a life fully lived, and is reflected in a voice of experience.

 About Beach Wedding Weekend:

You’re invited to a sunny beach town

for a witty, heartwarming romance.

When Brody broke up with Paige and went to Europe, he suggested that someday, they’d pick up right where they left off. A hopeless romantic, she believed him.

But when they meet again, Brody’s dating a gorgeous actress.

They’re all going to attend the same wedding, and Paige plans to win Brody back. She even enlists her best friend’s brother, Aiden, to pretend to date her and make her ex jealous. A breezy, charming restaurant owner, Aiden actually avoids serious relationships, but as a fake boyfriend, he’s perfect.

As old friends and exes take part in wedding preparations and enjoy the beauty of the Florida coast, they begin to see themselves—and each other—in a new light.

This summer romance includes a free Hallmark original recipe for BBQ Brisket Tacos with Sunshine Slaw.

Excerpt

Sasha let out a big sigh and curled the next section of Paige’s hair a little tighter than she had before. “When we first met in Europe, I thought we really connected. We were only together for a couple of days, but I felt like there was something there, you know?”

There was a pause as she released the pressure from the curl she was on and moved to the next strand. “Then when I found out I would be moving to the same area where he lived, I assumed it was kismet. He took me out on our first official date the same day I pulled into town.”

There was a pause, as if Sasha was considering what to say next. Or even if she should share anything else.

Do not engage, do not engage, do not engage.

While Paige could appreciate Sasha’s struggle, it wasn’t her job to help her ex-boyfriend’s new fling figure out why their relationship wasn’t working. Surely Sasha had other friends to talk this through with, didn’t she? Paige was only there to get her hair done, and all she had to do was sit still and stay quiet for just a little longer.

But apparently it didn’t matter what Paige’s brain thought was the best way to avoid an awkward conversation she felt sure she shouldn’t be a part of. Her mouth did what it wanted.

“And when you officially started dating that initial connection didn’t seem to be there anymore?”

Sasha exhaled, as if she’d been waiting to share this with someone. “No. At least not like it was in Europe. So when he asked if I wanted to come this weekend, I agreed, thinking maybe a trip to the beach would help us find our spark.”

“A beach wedding is a great place to rekindle a romance.” She should know. It had been her plan, too.

“That’s what I thought. But honestly, I didn’t factor in being here with you.”

Not sure what to do, Paige decided to play dumb. “Me?”

Sasha finally put down the curling iron and started twisting her hair up, securing it with bobby pins.

“It’s one thing being compared to the memory of you. But side by side in person? It’s been hard to measure up.”

Was she joking? This knockout beauty with the perfect figure and graceful movements was nervous about being compared to Paige?

With my mood dampening and all the lovebirds pairing off, I can’t think of a better excuse to get out of here. Clapping Jake on the back, I say my goodbyes and thank the guys for letting me hang with them tonight before taking my sullen ass back to my apartment.

It takes all of my restraint, not to check on Liv when I get back on the fifth floor. It would be so easy to knock on her door and tell her that I’m in love with her. That I’ve loved her for a long time. In my mind, I know it’s no use. My heart doesn’t want to listen.

I pause outside her door and touch a hand to the cold surface like it will somehow connect me to the woman inside.

“Whoa. Dude. What are you doing?” I hear the elevator ding, and Harley’s voice startles me.

“Nothing,” I shake my head and step back.

“Yeah, nothing,” he steps up beside me and shoves me toward our apartment. “Let’s go before you do something stupid.”

I huff. “Like telling her, I love her?”

“Jesus Christ, how much have you had to drink?” He questions.

“Not enough. That’s for sure.”

Harley opens the apartment door, ushering me inside. “I’m going to disagree with you. Drinking isn’t going to solve anything either.”

“Harley, it was six beers. I’m hardly drunk. Just delusional.”

“You might be right, there.” He grabs two bottles of water from the fridge and tosses me one. “When are you going to give up on her, man? Haven’t you had enough rejection?”

“Would you give up on the woman you love?”

Harley looks at me as if I’ve grown two heads. “If she treated me like shit? Pushed me away and said I made her miserable? Uh, yeah. I did; remember?”

I wince. He’s right. And I’m an asshole friend for bringing it up. “Shelia is nothing like Olivia.”

“Maybe. Maybe not. But a man has got to know when to cut his losses. Trust me.”

“It’ll be better when I finish this job and get the hell away from here. Though I feel bad leaving you without a roommate.”

Spotlight: How Could She by Lauren Mechling

An assured and savagely funny novel about three old friends as they navigate careers, husbands, an ex- fiancé, new suitors, and, most importantly, their relationships with one another

After a devastating break-up with her fiancé, Geraldine is struggling to get her life back on track in Toronto. Her two old friends, Sunny and Rachel, left ages ago for New York, where they’ve landed good jobs, handsome husbands, and unfairly glamorous lives (or at least so it appears to Geraldine). Sick of watching from the sidelines, Geraldine decides to force the universe to give her the big break she knows she deserves, and moves to New York City. After she arrives, though, and zigzags her way through the downtown art scene and rooftop party circuit, she discovers how hard it is to find her footing in a world of influencers and media darlings. Plus, the magazine where Sunny and Rachel work is on the brink of folding. Rachel is struggling to juggle her life as a writer, wife, and new mother–how is it that she was more confident and successful at twenty-five than in her mid-thirties? And Sunny’s life as a popular West Village tastemaker is not nearly as charmed as it seemed to Geraldine from Toronto. Perhaps worst of all, why are Sunny and Rachel–who’ve always been suspicious of each other–suddenly hanging out without Geraldine?

Hilarious and fiercely observed, How Could She is a novel of female friendship, an insider’s look into the cutthroat world of New York media–from print to podcasting–and a witty exploration of the ways we can and cannot escape our pasts. In Geraldine, Sunny, and Rachel, Mechling exposes how women can pragmatically manipulate one another in life and in love, and how the glamour, energy, and hope of New York City doesn’t deliver for everyone, but sometimes, in the most unexpected and delightful moments, embraces those who have just the right amount of hope and delusion.
