Spotlight: The Thirteenth Guardian by K.M. Lewis

Genre: YA Sci-Fi/Apocalyptic Fantasy
Release Date: June 11th 2019

Summary:

Da Vinci’s secret pales. Michelangelo concealed an explosive truth in his famous Creation of Man fresco in the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican. Everything we have been taught about Eve is wrong—she didn’t cause the fall of man. Instead, Eve carried a far more devastating secret for millennia; one that will change the world forever.

As the modern-day world suffers the cataclysmic effects of the “Plagues of Egypt”, Avery Fitzgerald, a statuesque Astrophysics major at Stanford, discovers that she is mysteriously bound to five strangers by an extremely rare condition that foremost medical experts cannot explain. Thrust into extraordinary circumstances, they race against time to stay alive as they are pursued by an age-old adversary and the world around them collapses into annihilation.

Under sacred oath, The Guardians—a far more archaic and enigmatic secret society than the Freemasons, Templars, and the Priory—protect Avery as she embarks on a daring quest that only legends of old have been on before. Avery must come to terms with the shocking realization that the blood of an ancient queen flows through her veins and that the fate of the world now rests on her shoulders.

Spotlight: More Than Anything by Natasha Anders

Author Message: Then and Now with Natasha Anders

Hi there, my name is Natasha Anders and I’m here to talk about my newest release – More Than Anything. This book features Tina Jenson and Harris Chapman as the lead characters.

Tina and Harris have known each other forever. They belong to the same social circle and attended high school together. When Tina was eighteen and Harris twenty, an ugly incident drove them apart and for the next ten years they barely spoke to each other.

The years have not been kind to Tina, she struggles to maintain familial relationships and friendships and finds it hard to even consider forming bonds with new people. As a teenager she was incapable of handling the overwhelming loss and sadness of what had happened to her and as she grew into a woman, a large part of her remained lost in the past and incapable of moving forward.

Tina’s emotional growth throughout the story is painful but necessary. She has frozen the pain, humiliation and absolute devastation resulting from the incident with Harris, into a solid block of ice. She has never properly dealt with any of that anguish and now the ice is thawing and all of those overwhelmingly painful emotions are surfacing. Tina is far from perfect and she makes a lot of mistakes throughout the story. But these mistakes are necessary in order for her eventual metamorphosis into a strong, capable, and emotionally mature woman to be believable.

Harris’s journey is very different. He tries his best to fix what has happened between them. Unaware of how damaging their encounter was to Tina, he often attempts to reach out to her and apologize for causing her pain. After constant rejection from her, he tries to move on with his life and for a few years he almost succeeds. But whenever he sees Tina, he finds himself drawn to her. He’s a steady, dependable guy. But it’s hard for Tina to see him as such. To her, he will always be the boy who hurt her. The boy responsible for the worst night of her life and for every difficult thing that has happened as a result.

When he finally finds himself in the position to be her rock, Harris truly shines. He’s by no means a perfect man and sometimes he’s stubbornly determined to do the “right thing” even if it tends to be self-defeating. But he eventually recognizes that the best thing he can do for Tina and himself is to allow her to make her own decisions and trust her to know her own heart and mind.

Despite their many trials and frustrations, Tina and Harris will always be better together. This is the story of how they discover that absolute truth for themselves.

Release Date: June 11, 2019

Publisher: Montlake Romance

Summary

Tina Jenson belongs to the same social stratum as Harris Chapman, but he’s out of her league—at least that’s what she thinks before they jump in bed together. It’s the perfect night, but when she overhears crude, hurtful comments the next morning, she can’t get away fast enough.

Ten years later, Tina’s life is a mess. That night with Harris didn’t just hurt her feelings; it started a cascade of disappointment and heartbreak. Every time she bumps into Harris, her heart twists inside out. She still wants him, but she’s harboring a painful secret from their night together that she’s not ready to reveal.

Crossed signals, high-society whispers, and shame have kept Tina and Harris apart for years, but deep down, they’re hungry for each other and eager to write their own rules. Can they let go of the past and find their way back to each other, or are the barriers between them too high and too strong?

Excerpt

“How you’d like your steak cooked?” Harris asked.

“Medium rare.” Tina retreated to one of the mismatched tall stools at the breakfast bar and clambered up onto it. She watched him competently move around the kitchen, cleaning and washing the spuds before readying them to go into the oven. He hummed softly beneath his breath as he worked … the tune was very familiar, but because his humming was so off-key, she couldn’t quite place it. The title hovered on the edge of her brain.

“Ugh, what is the name of that song? It’s driving me crazy!”

He looked up, startled. “What song?”

“The one you’re humming.”

“I’m not sure. Wait…” He hummed again and then breathed a few lyrics in a falsetto voice that reduced Tina to stitches. He repeated the same two words over and over again. And the words, combined with the seriously off-key tune, were definitely familiar to her.

He shook his head before saying, “I’m not sure what that song’s called … hey, stop laughing. I know for a fact your singing voice isn’t much better.” His offended observation just made her laugh harder. “Do you know the song title?”

“It’s…” She gasped for breath, then broke down into gales of laughter again when she glanced up into his expectant face. She folded her arms on the countertop and dropped her head for a moment as she tried to bring her giggles under control. Once the laughter abated, she lifted her gaze to his smiling eyes—he didn’t really look offended at all, just gently amused. “I’m sorry. It’s not your singing … okay, it kind of is. But I think I found it funnier that you were asking for the song’s title when you k-kept…” She inhaled deeply when it felt like the laughter was threatening again. “Kept singing it in that godawful voice.”

“What do you mean?”

“The song’s called ‘No One,’ Harris. By Alicia Keys.”

“Oh.” He twisted his face into a sheepish grimace before chuckling, the sound deep and masculine. “That makes sense. I like that song.”

She did too. In fact…

“We danced to that song. On my twentieth birthday,” he said, his voice quietly reminiscent. She nodded, surprised that he remembered the song, considering the state he had been in that night.

“I know.” Danced. And then kissed. Her very first kiss. The song had come to mean so much more to her, but she determinedly tamped down those particular memories.

Amusement fled, and they exchanged an uncomfortable look before both averted their eyes. Silence descended, their troubled history once again asserting itself between them. Tina nervously drummed her fingers on the Formica countertop.

“Tina.” His voice sounded anguished. “If I could do it all over again…”

She stopped tapping and lifted her hand to prevent him from saying anything further.

“Let’s not go into this again, Harris.” She watched him screw his eyes shut as he battled with what looked like some pretty powerful emotions.

“Damn.” The word was soft and fierce and sounded like a prayer.

“Why don’t we…” She paused as she considered the words she was about to utter. No matter which way she phrased them, they would seem like an olive branch. And she wasn’t sure if she wanted to extend one yet. Or ever. Still, she was in his—temporary—home, about to break bread with him, so to speak, and maybe—for her emotional health—it would be best. “Why don’t we set this aside? For today at least.”

She watched his throat move as he swallowed and then shifted her gaze to his navy-blue eyes, which were alight with gratitude.

“I’d like that,” he said gruffly, offering her the tiniest of smiles.

Tina heaved a relieved sigh, feeling lighter than she had in months. Possibly years.

“Good. Now, how about you get those steaks on? I’m starving.”

Spotlight: No Heartbreaker Required by JoAnn Sky

When an avalanche crushes her world, Olympic hopeful Starr Taylor loses her job, her boyfriend, and worst of all, her confidence. She's working on getting her life back together and moving forward, and it certainly won’t be with Spencer Kensington, the far-too-attractive playboy lawyer she’s forced to play nice with at their friends’ wedding. Unfortunately, Spencer's trip to Reno gets extended unexpectedly, and Starr suddenly finds herself way too close for comfort with the man she's quickly realizing is more than he appears.

Spencer is a tough, no-nonsense New York businessman with a no-commitment rule in the bedroom. But a few days of living with Starr, feeding goats and helping her save troubled teens, has him feeling something he can't identify. In fact, the more Spencer gets to know the surprisingly vulnerable and tempting woman, the duller his superficial life in the city starts to seem. But everything he's worked for is waiting for him, and as Spencer’s flight back home grows closer, he's left wondering if the life he has is really the life he wants.

Excerpt

He walked to the edge of the porch and looked up at the sky, dotted with stars of different sizes and brightness. Now this was a view he didn’t have back home, not with all the lights. It was peaceful, relaxing. That welcoming feeling that made you think you might fit in. Could he fit into a place like this? More than likely, he’d be bored within a month, no, a week. Still, he couldn’t remember the last time he’d felt so at peace. Not even in Aruba last Christmas, alone.

Starr cleared her throat. “So how do you think it will go tomorrow for Matt? Mrs. Millard confirmed what I thought, that it’s his first time.”

First time caught. Spencer’s thoughts drifted back to his first time in court—and in juvie. It wasn’t a wallet he’d stolen, it was a baseball glove. An initiation into a group of friends he thought he couldn’t live without. “Matt’s charges will be read in front of the court, and then the judge will set his formal court date.”

“Sounds intimidating.”

“It seems a whole lot scarier than it really is, especially the first time.” He’d survived his first run-in with the law just fine and totally unrepentant. It was the second that screwed him—and saved him.

“Sounds like you’re talking from experience again.”

He turned around, rested against the railing, and focused on Starr’s silhouette nestled into the swing.

“Do you…have experience?” Her tone was laced with curiosity. It beckoned him, made him want to follow.

He opened his mouth to respond and then clamped it shut, thankful the darkness hid the confounded expression he knew he was sporting. What was it about her that made him want to drop his guard and say things he’d never otherwise say?

Get your head back in the game, man.

“I’m experienced in all kinds of things that would interest you.” He softened his voice, infusing it with just enough arrogance to make good on that promise.

She stood up, ready to walk away, no doubt. A good thing, really. She wasn’t his type.

But then she moved toward him. Had she changed her mind, about him? Had he misjudged her? The smell of lilacs wafted through the air as she approached, intensifying the need to reach out and touch her, though he didn’t. Not yet. She wasn’t like any woman he’d known before. He needed to let her drive this…this, whatever was starting between them. Patience, he reminded himself. Lots of it.

She stopped just inches away. Close enough for him to see some hope, or maybe it was curiosity, in her eyes. Close enough for him to feel her breath on his shoulder. Warm, and was it ragged? Or was that his? She licked her lips, and his eyes were mesmerized by the motion. He could barely tap down the need to taste them, feel his lips on hers.

“What do you want?” He needed her to be sure.

“I can have anything?” she whispered.

His breathing hitched. “Name it.” They had two nights—two long nights. More than enough time to experience all kinds of interesting things, if that’s what she wanted.

She came to the beach to write…
But she’s getting distracted by the surfer next door.

Jenna, a single mom and successful author, has five weeks to deliver her next young adult novel to the publisher. This year’s summer getaway with her kids will be a working vacation.

The only problem? Lucas, the devil-may-care surfer in the beach rental next to hers. He cranks up his music at night, hosts loud volleyball matches, and allows his dog to run around at will.

Jenna often blames him for her writer’s block. But before long, she begins to see a new side of her neighbor at the shore. Maybe opposites do attract…but will that attraction fade like a sunset once summer is gone?

This funny, emotional romance includes a free Hallmark original recipe for Shrimp Scampi.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo

EXCERPT:

Lucas McKinnon unzipped his wet suit, peeled it down to his waist, and let the spray of the outdoor shower beat the salt and sand off his torso. If there was one thing he liked almost as much as a morning surf, it was a nice, hot shower afterward. The fact that the shower on the lower deck of the beach house offered him a clear, unobstructed view of the shore made it even sweeter.

The sea was unusually still today, as smooth and glassy as a mirror. Not so great for surfing, but undeniably pretty to look at it. Without the usual spray coming off the breakers, he could see the lighthouse looming in the distance. Just off the shore, a pair of dolphins crested the flat surface of the water, their silver forms glistening in the morning sunlight.

The calm before the storm.

Or so it seemed. In reality, the forecast was mild. Lucas checked the surf report every day like clockwork, and according to the TybeeWaves web site, there wouldn’t be a raindrop in sight. Still, he couldn’t remember the last time his little slice of the beach had been so serene. It was nearly as unsettling as it was beautiful.

Then, just as he was about to flick the shower faucet to the off position, the stillness of the moment came to a colorful, bewildering close as a woman came bounding down the stairs.

“What the heck?” She gaped at him, wide-eyed and frozen in place.

For a minute, Lucas thought she might turn around and bolt back up the stairs.

“Whoa. Sorry, I’m sorry. I didn’t expect a shower.” Cheeks ablaze, she swallowed and averted her gaze. “Right in the middle of our place.”

“Sorry about that.” He gave the faucet a crank to the left and the shower’s stream came to a dripping halt. “You must be the new neighbor.”

The trickle of water slowed to a stop.

Plop.
Plop.
Plop.

Three slow drops, and she still couldn’t bring herself to look at him.

“Um, yeah. We just checked in,” she said to a nearby hibiscus bush, then nodded at the bin in her hands. “I just wanted to find somewhere to put this.”

Wow, this was one jumpy woman. Lucas wasn’t sure he’d ever seen a person who vibrated with such nervous energy. It rolled off of her in waves.

The forecast had been wrong. A storm had most definitely come to town. From the looks of things, a Category Four. Maybe even a Five.

“I’m here for Corina Davies in 1205,” I respond, my nerves rattling even louder than five minutes ago when I was seized with the instinct to see her.

“Is she expecting you?” he asks, resting his hand on the phone.

I shake my head. The guy must think I’m a weirdo for just showing up like this. He’s going to call her for sure.

Sure enough, he picks up the phone. “Ms. Davies, you have a visitor,” he says, and then looks back at me. “Your name?”

I almost turn around to walk back out into the night, but I stay rooted to the spot. “Kurt. Kurt Owens.”

“Kurt Owens. Thanks.” He turns to me again and nods. “Go ahead. Have a good evening.”

I head for the elevator, and my heart rate rises with each step. She’s gonna think I’m fucking nuts for showing up like this at midnight. And why am I doing this again? What do I hope to achieve by interrupting whatever relaxing activity she’s enjoying at this time of night? I don’t know, but the thought of seeing her makes my palms sweat. I remember that skirt she wore, and how soft her legs looked. My cock twitches at the memory of her silky-smooth legs. Fuck. Down, boy. We’re not here for that.

I step into the elevator and before I know it, I’m standing in front of her door, my hand in the air. What am I going to tell her? What’s my excuse for showing up here so late? At the very least, I have to admit it to myself—I just want to see her. I have to see her. There’s no denying the spark that flew between us the other night. All those years hadn’t done a damn thing to kill our chemistry.

It sure is ballsy to just show up here. Maybe I’ve had a bit much to drink, but I’m not drunk. I’m not slurring or falling over myself. She won’t notice.

Finally, I knock. She’s expecting me, because she opens up right away. Seeing her knocks the wind out of me. Her hair rests over her shoulders in this sexy, yet natural way; she has a hint of makeup, but not much. She doesn’t need any. She’s still a natural beauty, just like she was all those years ago.

A light pink, silk robe clings to her body and ends just above the knees. She ties up the belt, very tight, as if afraid it might slip off any minute. Or that I might see what’s underneath. I try to push the thought from my head.

“Hi,” I say, hoping I don’t look as awkward as I feel. I’m standing in her doorway, without any good reason whatsoever, like a doofus. She’d be perfectly justified in turning me away with some excuse about going to sleep or whatever. But, she doesn’t.

She stands back to let me in.

“Hi, Kurt.”

I love the way my name sounds on her lips. Her lush, rosy lips. So smooth and kissable.

We both are.
But the time has come to take back control of the situation, to risk it all, to convince her to let me in, because she can’t be anything other than mine.

(O’Connor Brothers, #2)
Publication date: May 20th 2019
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance, Sports

I’ve gone back: back to the place where it all started, where somebody else had the final say.
I did it out of love for my family.
I’m trying to rebuild my life, to stay standing, even though my legs hurt like hell. I’m concentrating on myself, on my career.
I’m ready to tear everything apart to try and keep it all together. To hate without feeling guilty for it, because hating others is the only way I know how to keep myself - the person I am - going; and I was doing it.
I was strong. I was untouchable. I was invincible.
Actually, I was deluded.
I didn’t consider everything. I didn’t consider her: the only woman I really want to hate, but who gives me hope. A woman who turns your world upside-down, who entwines herself into your life even if she can only stay until tomorrow.
I’m not looking for tomorrow: I want a future. But I don’t believe in that anymore.
And I can’t turn back, not even for her.

My name is Ryan O’Connor, and I’m about to make a huge mistake. I’m about to let her believe in me, to take a chance. But she’d be betting on the wrong man. I’ve never been the right one. And she’ll be left accepting her bitter defeat.

IAN EXCERPT:

“Tell me that everything’s okay,” he says seriously. “Tell me that this time no one’s going to run away or regret this or lose their mind over it.”

I look at him and smile. “None of those things are going to happen.”

He exhales and caresses my face with his hand.

“Riley Murray, you’re breathtaking, you know that?”

My heart swells in my chest.

“You’re not so bad yourself.”

He laughs, rolling onto his back and bringing me with him. I lie down and stretch out alongside him, resting my head on his chest. I caress his pecs, his shoulders and his arms. I hear him sigh every time I change the movement.

“Do you want to know what I really like?”

He turns his head to look at me better. I raise my gaze and let myself be taken in by the warmth in his eyes.

“This. You and me.”

He exhales deeply as if he had been holding his breath this whole time.

“I’m begging you, please don’t leave me in the middle of the night.”

And in this moment, with his eyes as sweet and melancholy as I’ve ever seen, Ian O’Connor takes my heart and I know he’ll never give it back.
