Spotlight: Covering All the Bases by Jody Holford

Talk about a wild day... As if being summoned to the deathbed of a grandfather she didn’t know existed wasn’t enough––Isla Bennett meets the man of her dreams. Spends an amazing day playing tourist around Nashville with him. And then finds out she’s inherited the Nashville Slammers major league baseball team. Oh, and her new dream man? He’s the Slammers’ star power hitter. Isla just went from amazing first date to holy heck I’m your boss in the span of a day.

Liam Cruz can’t believe how refreshing it was to spend a day with someone who didn’t know his batting average, the size of his last contract, or heck, even that he’s a baseball player. Now Isla’s thrust into the spotlight, and though she’s more than capable of handling herself professionally, he takes it upon himself to teach her everything he can about the game that is his whole life. But they’ll have to keep it on the DL.

Because doing what’s best for the team means they can never be together––and that might be the toughest play of all.

His broad shoulders and short cropped hair made him look a little dangerous and a whole lot capable. Of many things.

“What’s going on in that head of yours, Red?” He tugged on a lock of her hair and gave her a smile that shot fireworks through her blood.

“I was just thinking that I don’t want to waste the day or two I have here thinking about my brother, my dad, or anything else.”

Liam stepped closer. “Seems like you could use a little break from them.”

She laughed at his dead-on assessment. “How is it that you hardly know me and you see things other people don’t?”

In her professional life, everyone had the utmost respect for her father and brother. The dynamic duo of the fitness center world. Never mind the long days and nights and hours that Isla spent making things come together. Things like the deal with Conroy Hotels. Her father’s gyms were going to be a part of ten Conroy properties starting in the new year. Thanks to Isla. Only, no one had thanked her, except Jonathan Conroy, who she’d struck the deal with. He’d been gracious and kind. A great negotiator. He’d treated her as an equal.

“Maybe it’s because I’m looking so close,” he said, his voice lowering. Had she moved? Did he? She wasn’t sure, but the front of each of their bodies was touching, and despite the chill in the air, Isla’s skin warmed beneath her layers.

“Hmm. You are looking quite close,” she said, not intending for her voice to come out so husky.

Liam ran his thumb over her cheek, then back, down over her lower lip. Her knees went loose and she pressed her hand to his chest. It was hard and solid like the brick wall at her back. But so much hotter. With his jacket open, she pressed her hand to his soft shirt and felt the sleek muscle beneath.

“I like what I see,” he said, his face coming closer.

“Me too,” she whispered. A little too much. Could she blame her overtaxed emotions? Probably not. There was something about Liam.

The first touch of his lips pushed thoughts of anything other than him, of getting closer, out of her brain. One of his hands threaded through her hair, anchoring her where he wanted so he could slant his mouth over hers, teasing and testing, before diving all the way in.

Isla’s fingers fisted in his shirt, curling the material in her palm as she arched to get closer, to take more. Liam gentled the kiss, slowing it down before he leaned back, enough so he could speak but so they were still sharing the same air, their breath mingling and intertwining sort of like their bodies.

“Wow,” he whispered, pressing his brow to hers.

“Yeah. Wow.” Two or three days of doing exactly that didn’t seem like nearly enough.

Liam’s hands ran down her arms, back up, over her shoulders, and then he pulled her close and wrapped his around her, hugging her tight and pressing a kiss to the top of her head. Isla sank in. If she could only have a couple days with him, she was going to enjoy every second of it. Which meant blocking out all of the questions and the uncertainty.

When he pulled back, Liam’s eyes were a mix of desire and sweetness. “You like Johnny Cash?”

Isla laughed at the quick change of subject. “The Man in Black? Sure.”

“I was hoping you’d say that,” he said, taking her hand again. “Come on.”

Jax swaggered over just as the coffee pot beeped. He reached around me, leaning in close to take the pot, and pouring two cups before putting it back. “You always drink that much? I thought you were a health freak.” He dumped way too much sugar in the coffee.

“It’s all about balance.” I shrugged putting a teaspoon of sugar in mine. “I’ll go to the gym tomorrow, and it will all balance out.” I sipped my coffee, watching him lean against the counter like he belonged in my kitchen. “Do you go?”

“To the gym? Yeah, that one across town, Frankie’s.” He stared at the coffee, then me. “I’ve slept with too many women at World Fitness to go back. It got weird.” I nearly spit my coffee.

“How many?” I looked into his gray eyes. Maybe it was the daiquiris, but Jax was sexy. In his button down, all the tattoos were covered, but I knew they were there. His arms had these skulls and stuff on them, but he never looked like a thug. He looked like a badass. Only Jax could pull it off. When he didn’t answer, I walked past him to the living room, and he followed.

“Maybe eight?” Jax sat at the other end of the couch, slouching back in a classic manspread. I curled my legs under me, trying not to give him a clear shot up my skirt. At least my buzz left me a little dignity.

“Maybe eight? You don’t know?” I teased, sipping my coffee.

“No,” Jax said it like he couldn’t give me a number if he tried.

Publication Date: May 26, 2019

Publisher: Brown Beagle Books

Lilac Sophia Carpenter is sixteen years old. She’s going to be sixteen years old for the rest of her life.

Confined to her bed as her health declines, Lilac lives her life in daydreams, imagining her love story to her former best friend, Nathan Emery. But Lilac and Nathan haven’t talked since that fateful night—the night of her sister’s wedding, when her health worsened and his life unraveled and the already-fractured pieces of their friendship became irreparable.

With the comfort of her daydreams becoming more and more elusive, Lilac must decide if reality can be greater than her own imagination when there’s little time left for living.

Excerpt

My feet sink into the new carpet as I wander the vacant house, soft to the touch like I’m floating on air, and that’s how I feel now—like I’m floating away, distancing myself from this vision I’d created for myself, this fantasy he’s spoiling with the mention of living it with someone else.

“This was my dream,” I whisper, gazing out the windows at the view of soft sand beaches and pulsing waves. I don’t like what’s happening here. My own daydreams are becoming so tainted, there’s no peace in them anymore.

He steps up behind me, kisses me on the cheek. “It should have been you,” he whispers, but I shake my head. I don’t want to hear those words. They’re too late, too late. This town, this house, this imagined life isn’t mine anymore. Now, it belongs to him and his future wife and a dog named Lucky.

I can’t do this. I can’t hope and wish and dream anymore. I can’t imagine the life I wish I had because it will never come true. I’ll never be with him. This place will never exist. The life I want will never happen.

I’m done dreaming. I don’t have any left.

Besides, when you’re too busy dreaming, there’s no time left for living.

Spotlight: High Risk by Siena Noble

About High Risk:

Caleb Martin. Lost prince of business royalty. The young airline mogul with a reputation for dominance in both the boardroom and the bedroom. But before he was worth billions, he was my first love, and my brother's best friend. We were supposed to grow old together... until a tragedy ripped us apart.

After six years I thought I'd finally moved on, but fate throws us together again. I try to tell myself he's just another client, futilely resisting the temptation to mix business with pleasure. But there's more than just our shared pain keeping us apart—lies and dark secrets that could destroy everything we've both build in the last six years. Giving in to temptation could ruin us... but is Caleb worth the risk?

Excerpt

I whipped around, debating where to go, when my eyes landed on Caleb again. Heart pounding, I hurried straight to him and grasped his shoulders.

“Kiss me,” I whispered frantically.

His eyes widened, then narrowed. “Why?” I couldn’t tell if it was more of a question or a warning. My heart jumped into my throat as he put his hands around my wrists, but he made no move to pull me away from him.

“I’ll explain later! Please, just—”

My words were cut off as his mouth crashed down on mine. I’d been the one who’d begged for this, and even still it was all I could do not to go totally limp as the hunger of his kiss took my breath away. But within seconds I was returning it with equal ravenousness. There had been a fire kindling inside of me for the past hour, and this was just the spark I’d needed for it to become a full-blown inferno. My tiny purse fell to the floor, freeing both my hands to fiercely grip his hair. His tongue teased my lips and they parted for him willingly—a silent plea for him to possess me and devour me the way he’d once had.

I was only dimly aware of being pulled into a small alcove. Then my back was against the wall, Caleb’s body hot and hard as it pressed against mine. His hands were everywhere; caressing my face, sliding down my neck and over my breast, gripping my thigh as he brought my leg up to wrap around his waist. Sweet fucking heaven, how I’d missed the all-consuming way he kissed. How had I survived without it for all these years?

“Fuck,” Caleb gasped as he wrenched his mouth away from mine, panting just as hard as I was. “Jesus…”

Gingerly, I lowered my leg, but my shift in position only brought the hardness of his cock between my spread legs to my attention. My hips seemed to have a mind of their own as they rocked against him, and I barely bit back a whimper at his answering groan.

“Jesus,” he breathed again. “I want you.” His lips pressed feverishly against mine again in an instant, though I had no idea which one of us moved first.

“Then fucking have me,” I moaned between kisses.

Spotlight: Falling For My Nemesis by Tia Souders

Falling For My Nemesis: A Sweet YA Romance
Tia Souders
(Sweet Water High, #6)
Publication date: June 11th 2019
Genres: Contemporary, Romance, Young Adult

Spending time with my nemesis never felt so good.

Carson Brooks has been my enemy since the day he moved to town and tried to drown me in a rogue wave.

Not only are we enemies, but we’re not quiet about it either. We’re polar opposites. Where I’m a perfectionist and methodical in all things, he is carefree and the life of the party.

While Carson tries to trip me in the halls on a regular basis, I’m busy glaring holes through his disgustingly thick skull.
Oh, and did I mention I’m best friends with his little brother? Talk about inconvenient.

But it’s our senior year and my life is unraveling. My parents are at each other’s throats, I have yet to hear back about early admissions at the college of my choice, and I have no date to the Snowflake Ball. So, when Carson whacks me in the face with a basketball during gym class, I snap. I go for his throat–literally.

Now Sweet Water’s principal is giving us a choice: face suspension or find a way to work together on the holiday Angel Project.

Great. As if living in a warzone weren’t enough, now I have to spend time with the enemy.

But as tensions rise and we begin spending time together, I realize there’s more to Carson Brooks than his cocky exterior. Maybe I like him more than I thought. Maybe a little too much.

EXCERPT:

A burst of laughter from center-court stole my attention. I glanced over to see Carson cackling with Olivia, a basketball casually hooked under his arm, looking as carefree as ever.

I rolled my eyes and turned back to Harper. Typical. Of course he would be fawning all over someone like her. He was probably going to the dance with either her or Tasha, one of Sweet Water’s MG’s. They might be popular and beautiful, but they earned their nickname as the school’s Mean Girls for a reason. I couldn’t imagine if I showed up dateless. No doubt Carson would relish the opportunity to rub my solo-status in my face.

I could picture it now, those crystal blue eyes glittering menacingly under the disco ball in the gym, his hair dark and rumpled. Couldn’t get a date, Shorty? he’d say, and then I’d punch him.

Ugh. Why was I even thinking about him?

I crossed my arms over my chest and mustered a smile. “No worries. I’m sure I’ll—”

My words cut off at the sound of someone yelling, “Heads up!”

But it was too late. I wasn’t fast enough. I was too wrapped up in my own personal crisis to react before the basketball smashed into my face—wham!

I doubled over, my hands flying to where the ball had torpedoed into my eye socket. The pain was sharp—blinding. It took my breath away. Several seconds ticked by before I managed to straighten and inhale, blinking a few times, eyes watering as I searched my surroundings with my good eye like a pirate.

My gaze narrowed, knife-sharp, zeroing in on my assailant. None other than Carson Brooks stood right in my line of vision, a smirk plastered across his perfectly symmetrical pretty-boy face.

I dropped my hand from my throbbing eye and Harper gasped beside me, covering her mouth, mumbling a muffled, “Oh my gosh.”

I gave her a cursory glance—she wasn’t helping—before I returned my focus back to the court where Carson began to laugh. Not a chuckle, but a bent over at the waist, full on belly roll.

And I snapped.

My hands balled at my side, while I stormed the eight feet separating us to his spot on the court, my eyes blazing, fists at the ready. I was a woman possessed as I closed the gap. All of my problems culminated in the single moment he lobbed the basketball into my face, and I was sure it was him. I had never been more certain of anything in my life. It was always him prodding me, poking me, pricking his needle-sharp jabs under my skin.

My face throbbed where he struck me with the ball, and as I neared, he laughed even harder. It took him but a minute to absorb the fury oozing from my pores, and his laughter faded, morphing into his signature smirk.

I didn’t think. I could only react, and before I knew what I was doing, before common sense could prevail, my slender fingers wrapped around his puny neck.
