Genre: Lower YA Fantasy

“Oh little one, the darkness is waiting, oh little one, run from it if you can; come little one, where the light can find you…”

This was a familiar shanty to Manchester born, Trevor Henderson; having grown up being mesmerized by stories of swashbuckling rogues, adventurous pirates and captivating aquatic creatures, he was no stranger to sea shanties. These tales instilled in him a longing for the sea.

Upon turning sixteen, he begins hearing whispers in the night, coaxing him to leave his posh life behind and follow his dreams; when Trevor finally takes the risk, he’s swept away on an adventure he never expected.

He soon learns the truth about his own identity and history, causing him to wonder if he should have set foot outside his comfort zone…

Excerpt

William Henderson wasn’t a fearful man, and why should he be? Standing at a good height of six-foot-two with a mighty, muscular build, there was no doubt that he could defend himself from any harm—along with the fact that his past occupation included looting, pillaging, fighting, and other daring tasks that took courage.

Today, however, was different. Today, he was facing a challenge he had never seen coming. He stood before his weak, pregnant, dying wife, Sara. His hazel eyes filled with pain, and his features clouded over with darkness. Feeling hopeless, he kneeled at her bedside, praying for a miracle. In this moment, his might, nor his wealth, could help him.

“William.” His sister, who was younger by five years, shivered. “You can’t just let her and the baby die,” she whimpered.

William looked up at her. Her auburn hair was messy as it rested on her shoulders, and her dark-brown eyes had dark circles under them due to the constant lack of sleep. Tears stained her cheeks, and her pink lips quivered as she made her way closer to Sara and gently dabbed a cold rag on her forehead. William kept on gripping Sara’s hand, feeling his heart sink further than he thought possible as he looked at her. Sara lay there, still so beautiful, even in her weakened state. Her fair skin still rosy and fresh, her lips still red, and her long brunette hair still shiny—her hand was freezing cold, though, and she trembled where she lay. William took a deep breath and gulped. “I don’t know what to do, Angelica.”

“You have to take her to Arjan,” Angelica firmly told him.

“I can’t. Taking her to him would mean exposing her to—”

“He’s the only one who can help her. William, please! We can’t just stand here hoping she’ll get better. Take her.”

“She’s right,” an older woman weakly stated as she entered the room. She placed her hand on William’s shoulder; he could feel her shaking. Her gray hair was woven into a side braid that rested gently over her shoulder, and distress filled her pale blue eyes. “We’re going to have to take the risk,” she said.

“Catharine.” William stood.

“I won’t let my daughter and my first grandchild die. Arjan is well-trained in the Melusines art of alchemy. He can help her, and he is the only Siren you can trust with the life of your wife and son. I give you permission to take her to him. Please do it,” she begged.

William looked down at Sara who groaned, shifting uncomfortably. He considered the pros and cons before he finally succumbed, nodding. “Angelica, pack her things, and let’s leave tonight,” he instructed, and his sister went running off.

Catherine took William’s face in her hands and weakly smiled at him. “And please, call me Mother,” she requested. “I will contact Arjan and tell him to meet you in the cove on the shore. Go.”

Janie Adams has been a single parent to her nephew since he was a baby. Fifteen years later, she’s finally found out who his father might be, so the two of them travel across the country to find him. She’d do anything for this kid. But when they arrive in the small town of Wishing River, Montana, and Janie finally meets the ruggedly handsome cowboy she’d been told had abandoned his son, his shocked response changes everything.

Aiden Rivers can’t dispute this is his kid when he sees his own features staring back at him, but he had no idea Janie’s sister was pregnant when she left him. He didn’t even know she had a sister—clearly they’d all been lied to. Now he has fifteen years of fatherhood to make up for and no idea how to be a dad. This was never in his plans.

Janie sticks around to help him ease into parenting, everything from showing him how to lure a sulky kid out of his bedroom to keeping up with the latest teen-speak. Together, they surprisingly make a good team, this city girl and country boy. But when the past catches up with them, Aiden and Janie must decide what’s best for the boy who's connecting them, not only for each other…which could mean splitting them apart.

Excerpt

“Well, I’m wiped. I’m going straight to bed,” she said, hopping out of the truck and deciding she needed to grow up and stop fantasizing about this man like she was a teenager.

She waited on the porch, shifting from one foot to the other as he looked for the house key. “Does it always snow this much out here?” she mumbled.

“Nope. Usually more.” He shot her a glance and was about to put the key in the door when he stopped. And then he was back to the Aiden she was beginning to know. The guy with the easy charm. “Before we go in, I just… I’m glad you had a good time tonight, Janie.”

She tilted her head, feeling like there was more there. Maybe it was the wine, or maybe it was that she just knew that she wanted a little more of that feeling…that feeling that he brought out in her that made her take a step closer to him. “I did. Thank you—I mean not thank you—for bringing me into your world here.” His eyes softened at that, and it encouraged her to go on. “Everyone had great things to say about you. Also, do you know the women in this town have all had a crush on you at some point? And the guys may be slightly miffed at that.”

He ducked his head, and she found that little bit of modesty quite attractive. “An exaggeration for sure,” he said, lifting his head and looking deep into her eyes like he was searching for something.

“I…I’m not exactly sure what the allure is, frankly.”

His eyes widened, and then he laughed. He took a step closer to her, close enough that she could see the darker flecks of blue in his eyes. “Really?”

She nodded, kind of giddy at having his undivided attention. “I was trying to think what it could be about you that everyone seems to find so appealing…”

The way his grin faltered almost made her stop teasing him. Like he might think she was being serious.

“And?” His deep voice seemed to curl around her heart and tug until she couldn’t help but drop the humor and tell him how she really felt.

“It’s that your insides are reflected on the outside. You see, the man I’m coming to know is hardworking and strong and noble. And that kind of character is reflected in your beautiful face,” she whispered. She held her breath, feeling silly when he just stood there.

But then he lifted his hand—his warm, work-roughened hand—and gently delved into the hair at the nape of her neck. “Janie…

The way he said her name, as though it came from somewhere deep inside, made her feel like she was the most special woman in the world.

Excerpt

I was getting antsy. It took all my self-control to keep myself from bouncing my leg while I hung out with Webs to play some Call of Duty. Renee was coming today, and she assured me she was ready to announce our love affair.

I was worried that she might not get onto the airplane and bail instead. I kept checking my phone to see if she’d said she was on the way or sent any update at all.

Webs elbowed me. "Dude. Quit looking at your phone. I need you to protect my flank."

"Well, it's not my fault that your girl keeps sniping. If I didn't know better, I’d say there's trouble in paradise." It was weird that Lily was also playing with us but was sitting upstairs rather than with us. Whatever floated their boats, I guess.

"If you’re going to be such shit company, I would rather be hanging out with Lil."

Shit, there was trouble in paradise. Maybe this wasn't the best time for a prank, but it was too late to tell Renee that we needed to hold off. "What's the deal?"

"She got word that Riker's coming back and she's going to be sent down to Hamilton in the next week."

Their whole love story was pretty epic. They fell for each other when she was an emergency backup goalie and earned a spot on our team while Riker went through alcohol rehab treatment. I hoped that they would get the whole season together, but her having to leave just sucked.

"Sorry, man."

"It'll be okay. We've been lucky to have her on the team. Who else gets to hang out with their girlfriend so much?" That was Webs—looking on the positive side of things. But no wonder he was giving me some shit for being bad company if he wasn’t going to see her for a bit. I was surprised he was spending the afternoon with me.

The doorbell rang. I tried to pretend I didn't have any idea of what was going on, but that had to be Renee. Webs paused the game and answered the door.

If it was possible, she looked even more beautiful than she did in late January. Her hair was looking lush, long, and wavy. While her green eyes were similar to her brother’s, hers always seemed to pop, especially when her dark hair was down. I was instantly hard thanks to her beauty.

Too bad this prank was the closest thing I would get to having her as a girlfriend. Then again, the next few days would really show how much of a dead man I would be if I did touch her.

The moment she spotted me on the sofa, she looked pissed. She came my way and slapped me right across the face.

I was in utter shock and just sat there blinking. "What did I do?" We’d agreed we would ad lib the announcement, but ow! Did I have to get slapped?

She shouted, "You got me pregnant, you asshole."

In unison, both Webs and I asked, "What?"

Then Webs turned towards me, and he looked pissed. Not that I blamed him, but I had supposedly broken the bro-code. "Did you sleep with my sister?"

"Um . . . Maybe . . ." Then I got hit for the second time in the span of minutes. That one I was expecting.

There was no way sleeping with your best friend's sister was ever going to be a free pass. That didn't mean it hadn’t hurt my jaw. Especially since he got me in the exact spot as Renee did. I rubbed it in the vain hope it would stop the stinging.

Both of the Webers were screaming at the same time. He yelled, "Get the hell out of my house, Shoresy. I don't want to kill you," while Renee screamed, "Don’t you dare kill him, Colton!"

But as Corazon and Beckett spend more time together—from picnics on the beach to galas in fancy dresses—she starts to develop very real feelings.

Too bad she’s engaged to the wrong Samuelson.

Excerpt

“You feel it too,” he said. She had to acknowledge this thing between them.

“Yes,” her voice was still breathless, husky. She didn’t sound happy. “But Chester…”

His conscience pricked him. But desire beat the crap out of that part of his personality. “This has nothing to do with my father. This is between you and me. We’re both adults, Cora. You can’t tell me my dad makes you breathe hard or gets your heart racing like this.”

The couple in the other car had wandered over toward the picnic benches and were setting up a telescope, completely ignoring them.

He placed his hand over her heart, reassured that it beat as fiercely as his. When she gasped, he took her lips again in a passionate kiss. His fingers found a way under the fabric of her dress to tease and caress the tight bud of her nipple. She pressed herself against his hand, silently urging him on.

Why the hell had he taken her to a public place and not somewhere he could divest her of the beautiful dress and feast on the even more gorgeous flesh beneath it? His hand moved from her breast to wiggle under the slit in the side of the garment. He caressed her inner thigh and she parted her legs.

Before he could explore further, more headlights deluged them in light. She pushed against his chest and retreated against the door panel. Her chest heaved and her lips were wide open as she sucked in air like a drowning woman.

He switched on the car’s ignition, then pressed the button to put the top up. An audience was not required.

“No more. It’s not right,” she managed to say after a minute. Her hand shook as she readjusted the top of her dress.

He reached for her hand and placed it against his heart so that she could feel the rapid beating beneath her palm. “This is what you do to me, Cora. And not just now, when we’ve kissed. When you walk in the room, when you smile at me, when you laugh. I want you all the time. I can’t stand back and let you marry my dad.”

The guilt in her eyes probably mirrored his own. “Your father and I—”

“Tell him you changed your mind. He’ll understand. I’ll be there when you tell him you can’t marry him. Cora, you can’t marry him. You can’t…not when we have this between us.” He reached for her again, but she held up her hands.

“What do we have, Beckett? Passion? Lust? It doesn’t last. Soon you’ll tire of me. Then what will I do? Do you think your father’s offer will still stand if I sleep with his son? I’ll have nothing. Again. I’m tired of nothing. I can’t start over any more. This is a no-win situation for me.”

Was that all it was between them? Passion? Lust? He couldn’t imagine tiring of her. He wanted to learn everything about her, discover her favorite foods and what made her laugh. Touch her and hold her and be with her until…

Until what? His father offered her permanency. Was he willing to do the same? Was he ready to hand her the power to potentially destroy him?

Was his intense need to protect her just chivalry? Or was it a sign of something more, something scarier? And the damned warmth that flooded through him whenever she was near—was that also just a symptom of a physical attraction? He’d never felt it before. He had no frame of reference for an accurate diagnosis.

Beckett’s eyes lingered on Cora sleeping beside him. She’d tried to keep awake on the drive back. But the late night making the spring rolls and the fresh air from the lake, not to mention running after the boys most of the day, had her eyes drifting closed before they’d reached the Lougheed Highway. Not that he minded—it had allowed him to enjoy her beauty unnoticed.

He had an insane desire to fly her around the world for real and not on an old beach blanket pretending to be a magic carpet. He wanted to show her the world’s splendor—see its diversity through her eyes.

Dammit. He was getting too involved. Two more weeks and he’d be back in Dubai. That’s what he needed to focus on. The next project, the next advancement in his career. Not fanciful notions of jetting around the world with his father’s nurse.

He shut the car off and reached over to caress her cheek until she awoke, her eyelids fluttering open until all she saw was him.

“Cora, we’re”—Home was what he was about to say. But were they really? For her, home was a little village high in the Cordillera mountains in the Philippines. For him, it was… Was it Dubai? Did he really want to return there as much as Cora longed to go to the Philippines? Did he even belong anywhere?—“we’re back.”

She blinked, then her eyes locked on his. “Oh, I’m so sorry I fell asleep.” Her voice was husky and nearly his undoing. Insanity beckoned. As did her lips.

Just one taste. How good could it be? He’d kiss her once, get it out of his system, and move on. He leaned another fraction of an inch closer, giving her time and space to move away if she wanted. Instead, she crossed the tiny gap between them and placed her lips against his.

This was how addiction started. Curiosity, tinged maybe with a little desperation, making a person do something they knew wasn’t smart. He lifted his lips to check her reaction. Her eyes were dazed, a light flush tinted her cheeks a fraction darker. He went back for a second hit, just to make sure the first taste had been as good as he’d imagined. Their lips touched again, moved a little this time. Her tongue darted into his mouth, then retreated, a deliberate provocation. He invaded hers. The kiss turned carnal, unrestrained. She moaned his name. Before his mind completely snapped, he pulled back, retreating to his side of the car.

He didn’t dare kiss her a third time. If he did, he knew it would be over. He’d be enthralled. Trapped. Addicted.

He bailed from the car while he still could.

Before he could delve deeper, his father pushed his plate away. “I’m done,” Chester said. “And I think I’ll forgo the chess game tonight, Cora. I’m tired. Why don’t you play with Beckett instead?”

Cora’s eyes widened as if his father had just asked her to hold a rattlesnake. “I should do some studying,” she said.

“Are you sure?” Beckett asked. “’Because I think I’d enjoy a lightsaber battle in the backyard.”

“Ha!” A wicked gleam entered her eyes as she pushed back her chair. Gone was the sweet nurse who held her patient’s hand throughout the meal. Gone was the polite dinner guest inquiring about his work. Before him now stood a woman who took no prisoners. This fiery side of her intrigued him. He’d admired the way she’d stood up to him in the office earlier. “If we were to play chess, Mr. Samuelson, I wouldn’t need to cheat to beat you.”

As she strode from the room, the napkin that had been clinging to her dress fluttered to the floor.

“I see what you mean about her tossing down a gauntlet,” Beckett said to his dad.

Chester chuckled. “Welcome to the club, son.”

Beck wasn’t sure exactly what being a member of this club entailed, but he was sure as hell looking forward to finding out.

Corazon Dela Cruz was becoming more interesting by the minute.
