Spotlight: The Breaks Between You and Me by Taiya Collier

GENRE: Young Adult Fiction Romance

Somewhere out in the hills of Montana, 17-year-old Harper Cassidy has a home. Really, she does! And so does her sister, Lil. But since all they’ve ever done is skip across the Pacific Northwest from town to town, following her mom’s every desire from Montana to California, it’s been getting harder and harder to feel rooted anywhere.

Until tragedy strikes. And, before she knows it, Harper is... free. Free to go home to Montana and return to a stability she never had. Only, there are several problems standing in her way.

First, she has to create a stable life for her and her seven-year-old sister. Second, she has to do it alone. And third, worst of all, she has to keep her mother’s absence a secret from the people she grew up with: her grandfather, her aunt, and him, the boy.

Andy Madden is Harper’s best friend, and the answer to her aching loneliness, but he is also the threat to containing the secret that her life depends on. A secret that seems just a little too heavy for any one person to keep.

Excerpt

Younger me goes wild running across these floors. In the kitchen I’m making jam with Mom. On the living room’s stained couch, there’s me, my scraped-up arm, and you, busy patching up scrapes with Spiderman Band-Aids with an ironic amount of doctor formality. On the four-seater table a couple steps away, are the piles of magazines I would bury myself in because I liked the feeling of losing myself in vivid, exaggerated, and bold colors and shapes and silhouettes. Younger, nostalgia-bound me runs across the dusty dirty floors of this house boundless and uncatchable and she laughs and giggles loud enough that it can no longer be considered music.

Excerpt

Running had been a really stupid idea. Hanging by the arms sounded sexy in erotic novels, but it was awful in real life. She could barely put her feet flat. The ache in her arms had grown to a fire, and there was no way to relieve it. When she rose to the balls of her feet to take the strain off her wrists, her calf muscles cramped.

The sweat that ran down her body itched. She had started whimpering a long time ago.

She didn’t know if her stunt had worked. It was possible someone else was about to whip her, and Dan would never know she was here. And if he knew she was here, it was possible that the person she cared for so much was going to hurt her.

The boards of the barn floor creaked. Despite knowing it wouldn’t help, she begged again. “Please, sir, I’m sorry, I’ll never try it again, I promise, just don’t hurt me anymore. I’ll be obedient, I promise—”

A hand covered her mouth.

“Don’t say anything.”

It was Dan! She nodded.

“Stay silent while you listen to me. There are cameras everywhere, and I never know who’s watching, but if we whisper, we won’t be overheard.” She nodded once more, and he released his hand.

“Laura, I am so unbelievably sorry you got mixed up with this. You know I’m undercover, right? Please tell me you don’t think I’d actually do this kind of thing?”

“Dan, of course you wouldn’t!”

He let his breath out, as though he’d been holding it until she gave the answer he needed to hear.

“But, shit, Dan, I never imagined anything like this!”

He sighed. “I’ve been on this case ever since I came back into town. And now there’s someone who wants me to screw up so he can replace me. I’m sure he grabbed you because he thinks I’ll give you special treatment, which won’t make his uncle, who’s the head of this whole slave ring, happy.”

“Dan, please, I’m scared!” She was shaking. She’d wanted to be brave, but her fear was rapidly overtaking her resolve.

“I know you’re scared. But I can’t get you out of here. This place is crawling with guards who are absolutely loyal to this guy DeLeo. They’ll shoot all of us if they suspect anything. But in a little less than a month there’s going to be an auction, and this will all be over,” he said. “You’ll have to stay until then, but if you never want to see me again after that, I understand.”

“Don’t say that! You can’t do anything that would make me hate you!”

It was a moment before he spoke.

“Laura, you have no idea how bad this is going to get. I’m going to have to punish you harder than I would punish the others, to prove that I’m not affected by your presence here.”

Hearing him say those words crushed the small hope she’d still carried. There was no solution that would see her safely home. She had no choice but to remain here, and she wept silently as she struggled to say the words he needed to hear.

“If I have to stay,” she stuttered, “then I want you—I need you—to do whatever it takes to get through this, and I don’t want you to feel guilty about it later. If you have to hurt me, do it. Just get us home safe, please.” She had to get those words out, no matter how terrified she was, before the band of fear squeezing her chest prevented her from saying anything at all. She couldn’t put any more burden on him.

“Laura, you don’t know what–”

“It doesn’t matter. I’m giving you consent.”

There was silence.

“Dan?” she whispered.

When he spoke, it was barely above a whisper. “Laura, I love you, and when we get out of here, I want to spend the rest of my life showing you how much.”

The statement stunned her and suddenly everything she’d spent years refusing to think about fell into place.

“I love you too, Dan,” she replied, her heart tearing apart. “I think I always have. Now please, do what you have to do.”

She felt him nod. He stepped away.

“I’ll be back after breakfast to deliver your punishment.” His footsteps faded as he left her hanging and alone.

Oh, God, help me! Fear roared up and consumed her.

About the Author

Hi there! For years, I wrote and hid stories in the computer, convinced that no one would be interested in the twisted musings of my mind. When the internet showed me that there were others who were just as twisted, I decided to come out of the closet.

My men are strong, even when love makes them tender. My women are fierce and independent and will not surrender until they are respected. My stories are about negotiating the dance between the two, until he claims her heart in the end.

Right now, I split my time between being mother, wife, overworked employee, and servent to the cat's every need. Most evenings will find me hiding in my office cave to write, where I only care about my internet signal and the strength of my coffee.

Excerpt

The air around me crackles.  A tingle starts in my fingertips and moves up my arm, down my torso, and straight to the very center of me.

I’m riveted. Caught in a forcefield that’s powered by…us.

He’s silent and his gaze has lost its calm. He leans toward me and I know, beyond a shadow of a doubt that if I let him kiss me, it won’t stop there. Even if we are in public.

This kind of reckless attraction is dangerous and the very last thing I need.

Summoning my well-honed discipline, I take my hand off his shoulder and reach up to tuck a non-existent stray hair back into my ponytail.  His eyes follow the movement of my hand before darting back to my face and landing squarely on my lips.

I clear my throat and take another step back. “So, tell me about yourself. Have you always lived in London?”

His eyes narrow on me and his lips curve in a smile that smacks of begrudging respect. “I grew up here,” he says, letting me change the subject. “But I went to boarding school at Harrow when I was fifteen. I was back in London for uni and then up in Manchester for my masters. I’ve only been back in London three years.”

I let out a low, impressed whistle. “That’s quite the resume.  What do you –"

The loud trill of a ringing phone cuts off the rest of my sentence.  He stops and reaches into his back pocket and snags his phone. But he doesn’t take his eyes off me.  I tumble headfirst into a chocolate high as he devours me with them.

That tingle… turns into a thrum.

“Your taxi's around the corner."

Disappointment, unexpected and sharp, lances through me, but I smile. “Oh great. They’re quick.”

“And reliable.” He reaches into the front pocket of his pants and pulls out a small pen and snatches the receipt off the takeaway bag.  He puts his foot up on the edge of the short wall that runs along the outside of the station and uses his knee as a desk.  He scribbles on the paper and hands it to me.

Our fingers touch so slightly, I’m only sure it happened because I feel that charge again.

I glance down at the scrap of paper. “What’s this?”

He smiles.  “Call me. If your stranded, or just because you want to.”

Unable to hide the smile his words inspire, I drop my gaze to the ground and nod. “Sure. Okay. Thanks.”

He reaches a hand toward my face and I stop breathing. “Addie…” His fingers raze the skin below my ear and I feel the heat of it all the way to my toes.

Headlights cut the darkness and his hand drops away. Driven by an impulse I can’t control, I grab his forearm, pull up on my toes and place a kiss on his cheek. "Thank you for stopping to help me."

His hand snakes around my waist and pulls me into his chest for a hug so warm that I’m sure I’ll melt if I stand here long enough.

He dips his head to my ear and rumbles, “Don’t thank me. Call me.

He lets me go just as the taxi’s squeaking brakes announce its arrival. He moves around me to open the passenger door. “‘Night, Addie.”

I flash him a smile and climb in on less than steady legs.  He closes the door behind me and I greet the driver. When I look out of the window, ready to roll it down to say a final goodnight, he’s gone

He nodded. “In that case, I want you to take a shower. The one in here has a steam option. Do that and let it open up everything. I’ll run you a hot bath in about ten minutes and you can go straight from the shower to the tub. Before the water starts to cool, I’ll get you out and tuck you into bed for a nice long nap. We can have dinner when you wake up and then you can go back to bed. I want you to know, you will not be alone.”

“There’s only one little problem with your plan?”

“What’s that?”

“You’ll see me naked.”

“That’s not a problem.”

“It is for me.”

“No, it’s not. Your file says you have an exhibitionist streak a mile wide. Besides, there have to be some perks in my line of work. Seeing you naked is one of them.”

“What if I don’t want you to? Better yet, what if I tell you if you get to see me naked, I get to see you naked?”

He closed the distance between them, sliding his hand beneath her golden tresses to cup the nape of her neck so she could feel his strength, before lacing his fingers through her mane and squeezing his fist together, tugging her head back.

“If you want to see me naked, Samantha,” he said, dropping his voice down low, his mouth hovering over hers, “all you have to do is ask. But if I get naked, I’m going to want to do more than look.”

Excerpt

Alice stared down at her phone in horror.

“No, no, no. This cannot be happening. Goddamn lying, cheating, son of a b***h.”

Her phone was never going to survive this. A loud thud echoed around the room after it went flying through the air and crashed against the dark wood walls of her cabin. Truthfully, as soon as she clicked on the picture, her cell phone never had a chance.

It had been three months since she’d caught her ex-boyfriend in bed with her best friend, two months since she had quit her job, and one month since she’d begged her sister, Lily, to let her come stay with her on her ranch in Bluestone County. Alice had enough self-awareness to admit she was running away from her problems, but being in London right now wasn’t an option. And after just seeing her ex-best friend’s latest social media post, it was a good thing Alice was in another country, otherwise there was a strong possibility she would’ve been locked up for grievous bodily harm by now.

“Oh my God, Ali, what the hell did you do to your phone? The screen is all cracked!” Lily gasped.

Alice hadn’t even heard Lily come in. She was checking on her again; she’d been doing that a lot.

“Um … yeah, it fell. Don’t worry, I’m sure I can get it fixed in town.”

Lily’s jade eyes narrowed. “Oh, really? And where exactly did it fall from, Ali? The sky? ’Cos from where I’m standing, it looks like it either magically fell from the ceiling, or you threw it across the room in a fit of rage?”

This is the problem with being so close to your sister. She knows me too damn well.

Letting out a sigh, Alice slumped further down into the leather armchair that had been cocooning her for the past hour.

“F**king Becky.” She grumbled. “Apparently, she’s pregnant. I’ll give you three guesses as to who the father is.”

And there it was, pity, all over her big sister’s face.

“Oh, Ali. I’m so sorry. How did you find out?”

“My friend forwarded me a post Becky made.”

Lily closed the distance between them and took a hold of Alice’s hand, quickly pulling her up from the chair. “Come on. Let’s go up to the main house. We can drink some wine, eat a f**kload of chocolate, and plot revenge.”

Alice reluctantly followed. Wine and chocolate were probably the only things that could possibly salvage today.

They were just a two-minute walk from the main house where Lily and her husband, Jake, lived. Jake’s sister, Sam, used to live there too but had recently moved in with her boyfriend, Duke.

Lily had initially wanted Alice to stay in the house with them, but she wanted the newlyweds to have some privacy. After all, it had only been two weeks since they’d gotten hitched in Vegas. Not to mention, Alice needed her own space. Luckily, the ranch had guest cabins, so she was able to take up residence in one of them until she figured out her next move.

As they walked into the house and made their way into the spotless stainless-steel kitchen, a familiar voice pricked up the hair on the back of her neck.

No. Please don’t be here right now. Please, not today of all days.

Damnit. There he was—Brady—all six foot two of him. The new bane of her existence. He was wearing a fitted, tan, cop uniform so sexy it should be illegal. If she didn’t already know he was the devil, she could easily be fooled by his dark, brooding good looks. Even his damn caramel-coloured eyes were mesmerizing.

Mesmerizing eyes? Get a frigging grip, Alice. He’s the devil, remember?

It had been two weeks since they’d met in Vegas at Lily and Jake’s impromptu wedding, and despite trying to avoid Brady like the plague since then, he just kept showing up. Yes, Bluestone was small, and Alice was staying at his best friend’s ranch, but it was actually getting ridiculous. He was everywhere. Whenever she ventured out, whether it was to get coffee or go shopping, he was there, waiting in the shadows, ready to make her life miserable.

“Looking good, sweetness.” Brady smirked as he purposely knocked her on the way over to the fridge, where he swiftly removed a beer bottle.

Alice shot him a glare over her shoulder. “Wish I could say the same to you, Brady, but it appears as if the rumours really are true and beer does go straight to a man’s gut.”

She was lying, of course. There was no beer belly in sight. The man was a wall of solid muscle, but something about him drove her absolutely insane. It apparently also meant she couldn’t control her mouth whenever he was in the vicinity. He’d somehow managed to crawl under her skin in a matter of minutes of them meeting, and insults had been hurled between them ever since.

Brady’s silky laughter bellowed behind her. “You offering to help me work it off, sweetness?”
