Spotlight: Fun Lessons by Leanne Treese

Rebecca Chapman, a singer passionate about her craft, has never felt appreciated by her uber-professional family. When she’s selected to try out for a new reality singing show, it’s her chance to prove she can make it in the music world. All she has to do is get chosen by the network. Problem is, she needs to play an instrument for the audition in two months. And she can’t play a thing.

Amazingly, the solution seems to lie with Ian Ledger, the ultra-annoying co-worker she’s been at odds with since day one. Turns out Ian’s a skilled guitar player. He’s willing to teach her, but there’s a catch. He wants to win back his girlfriend at his sister’s wedding. And he wants Rebecca to help him.

Seems like a perfect solution. She gets the music lessons needed to secure her spot on the show; he wins back the girl destined to be his bride. Easy peasy. Except, during the series of ridiculous “fun” lessons and hours of arduous music practice, Rebecca’s feelings for Ian shift.

As the wedding nears, Rebecca doesn’t want Ian to succeed in his quest for love. But a deal is a deal. They both have dreams to chase. And a dream come true is everything.

“I do have something you could help me with but”—I point at her—“no laughing.”

Her face twists into a smirk. A laugh bursts out, and I can’t help it, the sound makes me smile. I slap the sand. “I haven’t even told you yet.”

“I know. I know,” she says, composing herself. “I’m just getting it out now. In case it’s funny.”

I point at her. “Don’t make me retract my offer.”

She waves. “I won’t. I won’t. Sorry. Go on.”

“My girlfriend and I are on a break.”

“Girlfriend.” She inhales a breath. “Girlfriend. The one in the picture on your desk?”

“Yes. Audrey. The break was her idea. She thinks I’m a little,” I pause, “stodgy. Like an old man in a twenty-eight-year-old body.”

A smile inches across her face.

“Hey,” I say.

“Sorry.” She composes her features.

“Anyway,” I continue, “my sister is getting married in eight weeks and Audrey’s coming to the wedding. I’d like to show her a different side of me. One that’s, well—” I search for the right word.

“Fun,” Rebecca supplies.

“Yes, fun. And you seem, well, fun.”

“I seem fun?”
“Yeah. The crazy clothes, the electric blue glasses. You seem like the kind of person that would head up a cha-cha line or go cliff diving.”

She doesn’t say anything.

“I mean those things as a compliment.”

“I know. Thanks.” She picks up a pile of sand, lets it slidet hrough her fingers. “So,” she says slowly, “you would give me guitar lessons in exchange for”—she’s quiet a moment—“fun lessons?”

I sit up straighter and nod. “Yes. That’s it. Guitar lessons for fun lessons.”

Spotlight: The Last Lap by Christy Hayes

A man seeking closure after the death of his estranged brother. A woman grieving her sister and best friend. A connection they never saw coming. More than the temperature heats up in USA Today Bestselling Author Christy Hayes’ unforgettable page-turning romance about two tortured souls and their collision course with love.

Megan Holloway has learned a few hard truths in her twenty-eight-years. Life isn’t fair. People she loves always leave. And she’ll be stuck on Key West running her parents’ gift store and raising her twelve-year-old niece for the rest of her life.

Thirty-year-old Bryan Westfall has come to Key West to clean out his dead brother’s apartment and search for answers about the woman who died with his estranged older brother. Bryan didn’t know the woman had a daughter and he sure didn’t expect her sister to floor him with her beauty and biting brashness.

Bryan’s persistent need to help and Meg’s bumbling business skills create an unlikely union. The more time they spend together, the more their feelings become too powerful to deny. Meg knows Bryan is leaving at the end of the summer and Bryan knows Meg is holding back to spare herself needless heartache. When a hurricane forces them to evacuate, Meg mentally prepares to let Bryan go while Bryan wonders if home is where he came from or is with the woman who stole his heart.

Excerpt

He inched the door open a crack and his heart jammed into his throat. Instead of a beefy henchman, a willowy redhead stood fuming on his doorstep. He swung the door open wide and gawked at Amanda Holloway’s sister, tapping her sandaled foot on the mat.

“Stay away from us.” Her velvet voice quivered with rage. “Do you understand me?”

“Uh …” Bryan couldn’t organize his thoughts into anything resembling words. Seeing her in the store had been like a punch to the gut. Standing inches away on his doorstep where he could count the freckles across her nose and smell the perfume on her skin left him senseless. The woman didn’t need a baseball bat. She wielded a punch with her presence.

“You’ve got nothing to say?”

He extended his hand. “I’m Bryan Westfall. It’s nice to officially meet you.”

“Nice?” She gave his hand a death stare and her tone pitched higher. “You think this is a social call?”

Bryan dropped his hand. “I don’t have a clue what this is.”

“This is a warning.” She aimed a finger in his face. “Do not come near me, my niece, or our store, ever again. I don’t know what you’re doing here, but you’re not going to weasel your way into our lives like your brother did. He did enough damage, thank you very much.”

Whatever evidence Bryan had been searching for landed squarely at his feet with her threat. Corey’s presence in this woman’s life had changed it for the worse. “Listen …”

“Meg.”

“I’m sorry for your loss, Meg.”

His simple statement and quiet tone stopped her cold. She straightened her stance and folded her arms across her V-necked white t-shirt, an apostrophe forming between her brows. “What do you want from us? Why are you here?”

Bryan stepped back. “Why don’t you come in and I’ll explain.”

The crevice between her brows deepened and she shook her head. “I don’t think so.”

Of course she didn’t trust him. He was a stranger. His brother had slithered into her sister’s life and torn it to shreds. Meg was the living, breathing, reminder of what happened when people let Corey and his devil-may-care outlook into their orbit. “I’m cleaning out Corey’s apartment. Trying to piece together his last few months.”

“You’re his brother.” It wasn’t so much a statement as an accusation.

“You and your sister were close?”

The sadness in her eyes said as much as her choked agreement. Grief sat just below the surface. One tiny shift was all it took to uncover her pain. “Very close.”

“Corey and I …” How could he explain their complicated relationship? He couldn’t, not without a history lesson she didn’t care to hear. “We had a falling out.”

She snorted. “Of course you did.” She stared past him into the apartment filled with boxes labeled for charity. “That must make this pretty easy for you, huh? Boxing up his stuff, giving it away as if he never existed. You’re probably relieved he’s gone. No more fighting, no more messy feelings about your flesh and blood.”

Shame heated the skin of his neck, giving his voice a dangerous edge. “Nothing about this is easy.”

“My sister and I lived and worked together.” She raised her chin in the air, determined to drive her point home. “We raised her daughter together. Nothing about losing her was easy on any of us. I’m sorry for your loss, Bryan, but you can look for answers elsewhere. We’ve been through enough. The last thing we need is another slick-talking Westfall poking around where he doesn’t belong.”

Would she feel better or worse to know they shared the same impression of Corey? He decided not to find out. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to trouble you.”

“It’s too late for that. Just hear me loud and clear—leave us alone. Pack your stuff and go back where you came from. Whatever Corey was up to before he died doesn’t change the outcome. He’s dead and he dragged Amanda down with him. If you care at all about those of us left behind, you’ll go and never come back.”

She turned to leave, and a panicked surge of impatience had him stepping toward her, had him saying something he should have thought through. “I know you feel—”

She turned back so quickly her hair tangled in her teeth. She pulled the strands free and speared him with an angry scowl. “You don’t have a clue how I feel.”

He didn’t, not really, but neither did she. “I lost my brother, too.”

She closed her mouth and stared at him, the heat coloring her cheeks dimmed.

“Maybe we weren’t close. Maybe I couldn’t have changed the outcome, but you’re not the only one grieving. He may be the villain, but he was my brother. He was a man—a flawed man—with a family who cared. I’m not here to get you all worked up, but I need answers. My family needs answers.”

She watched him with wary, grass-green eyes. “Your answers don’t involve us.”

“Your sister knew him better than anyone.”

She shook her head and the red strands caught fire in the sunlight. “That’s not saying a lot.”

He had no other option but to beg. “Please, Meg. I don’t know where else to turn.”

She stared at him, grasping the strap of the leather bag slung over her shoulder in a chokehold. “Then I guess you’re out of luck.” She pivoted and strode away, eating up ground with her long, slender legs.

Bryan watched the sway of her miniskirt as she stormed off, then closed the door and turned to face Corey’s apartment. He rubbed the ache in his gut. He may have needed answers, but finding them just got a whole lot harder.

Spotlight: Good Morning, Hope: A True Story of Refugee Twin Sisters and Their Triumph over War, Poverty, and Heartbreak by Argita Zalli and Detina Zalli

The inspiring true story of the Zalli family, forced to rebuild their lives in a new, uncertain land

Born in poverty-stricken Albania, twin sisters Argita and Detina Zalli always dreamed of becoming doctors. Their parents scrimped and sacrificed, committed to giving them a better life. But then the unthinkable happened. In 1997, the government collapsed, plunging the country into anarchy and civil war.

The twins' dream unraveled along with their homeland. Their parents had to find a way to leave and save their daughters' futures—not to mention their very lives.

It took over two years for the Zalli family to escape. After several dangerous attempts, they finally made it to England, where the thirteen-year-old twins believed everything would be much better. They soon found out otherwise. Now refugees, with little more than the clothes on their backs, the girls were mercilessly bullied and constantly afraid they would be sent back to Albania and their parents would be sent to jail.

Still, the twins persevered and learned how to navigate their harsh new reality. When tragedy struck yet again, threatening what they held most dear, the girls had to come to terms with the high price they had all paid to survive.

In Good Morning, Hope, Argita and Detina share their harrowing story of courage and resilience. It was the strength of their family, particularly the sisters' unbreakable bond as twins, that nurtured and sustained them throughout their perilous ordeal.

Born in Albania, twin sisters Argita and Detina Zalli were eleven years old when the government collapsed and civil war broke out. Two years later, after several failed attempts to flee the violence and poverty, they escaped with their parents to England.

Overcoming the formidable challenges of being refugees, both young women achieved academic success and went on to become highly accomplished PhD research scientists and lecturers. Influenced by Barack Obama and eager to help others, they founded We Speak Science, a nonprofit organization that supports disadvantaged students throughout the world, particularly immigrants, whose circumstances hinder their ability to learn at school.

Subsequently, in collaboration with world-class oncologists and scientists, Argita and Detina cofounded Aferdita Ime, a nonprofit initiative that seeks to help cancer patients through psychosocial support and counseling.

Excerpt

Gilbert crept behind Nan. She sat so still and concentrated at the sitting room writing table, her head bent over a crisp, neatly written letter. But her curls. How tiny and soft as they drooped down her neck and caught morning sunrays in their spirals. Had she no inkling he was two steps behind her?

In one flashing movement, he swiped the letter from her fingers. “By Jove, what does it say?”

A jump, a small gasp, then she twisted in her seat. “Gil! You are terrible to frighten me so—now give it back!”

He retreated, lifted the letter above him. “I am in great agonies over this. You must appease me. What does it say?”

“Do not be ridiculous. You are as bad as Temperance.” She rose and came toward him, then held out her hand as if she imagined he would return the letter to her palm. “Come on, place it here.”

“Or what?”

“Or I shall tell Mr. Stanhope his son has gone mad.”

“Perhaps he has.” The letter raised a little higher when she made a jump for it. “And shall doubtless go madder still if he is not granted permission to see this letter. After all, it took you long enough to read it. I have no doubt but that it is of the greatest interest.”

“You are vexing me!” A laugh broke from her lips. How fondly and warmly it spread throughout the room, as she weaved around him and strove for the letter. “I have not time for such childish games. Can you not see I am busy?” Another laugh. She stepped upon a rolled-arm bench and made yet another grasp.

He dangled it out of her reach.

She stretched inches toward him.

And somehow, by some wretched disaster, she lost balance and came tumbling. Tumbling toward him. Tumbling into his arms. Tumbling against his chest, where those curls he had resolved to only look at now touched him.

This was a mistake. He should not have followed her into the sitting room. He should not have made sport with her and pretended they were children again. He was not the old Gil, and she was not the little Nan. They were changed, irrevocably changed, in ways he wasn’t brave enough to face.

Heavens, why didn’t she pull away? How long would she stay here, close to him like this? An eternity was already gone, but it’d only been seconds. Impossible, possible . . . he didn’t know anything.

His arms were moving up, not away. They were guiding his hands to her face, where his scandalous fingers seeped into the curls. How oddly she looked at him. Not as one frightened, only confused.

If she would step away, he would have control again. He could stop himself. Could end this self-destructive madness.

But she stood still until he dropped his mouth to hers. Hesitated. Breathed. Then pressed—with a passion so alive it sailed him away, tossed him in a storm of wonder and fear.

She tasted of everything he’d ever expected. Sweet gentleness, rich womanhood, tender innocence and—

She flung herself back so quickly he flinched. She took one step. Then two. Then three, until her legs hit that fateful, horrendous bench. Why didn’t she say something?

She stared at him as if he’d injured or compromised her. Stared at him with tears so big and confused he wanted to drown in them.

Then she bolted from the room.

Part of him wanted to run after her. The larger part of him couldn’t. God, where is Thy mercy? He dragged a shaking hand across his mouth, the mouth she had touched. How long can I endure this?

As if in answer, he spotted the letter he had stolen from her grasp. He bent down but didn’t touch.

My Darling Nan,

Mother wishes that I should invite the Stanhopes and yourself to Bletherton Manor for the twelve days of Christmas. We are to have a ball like no other for Epiphany, and there shall be much gaiety and dancing and food. I do hope everyone can come. All that aside, however, I should wish you to be there for a more intimate reason, a more significant reason. For you see, my darling, there is something I have wished to ask you for a very long time. I was uncertain what your answer might have been before, but feel more confidence now. I have no doubt but that it shall make us both greatly happy.

The letter was signed lovingly by the dragon.

The man who was breathing fire upon Gilbert Stanhope and burning him alive.
