Spotlight: Just Another Meet Cute by Jenn P. Nguyen

Publication date: May 20th 2025

Genres: Comedy, Contemporary, Romance, Young Adult

Boy saves girl stuck on a disastrous hike. What could go wrong? So. Much.

Just Another Meet Cute is the joyful and funny story about what happens when you realize you’re dating the wrong twin.

When seventeen-year-old Nina Riley gets saved by a super cute Knight-in-Faded-Khakis just as she lands in an embarrassingly ‘ahem’ sticky situation during the most disastrous hike known to man, she wasn’t exactly looking for a meet cute. She really just needed some peace and quiet from her complicated family. Unfortunately, he disappears before she can properly thank him or get his number. All she has is his name (Ian Nguyen) and a navy jacket with a dog keychain, a gym card, and laundromat receipt. But a meet cute is a meet cute. And armed with years of watching Veronica Mars and a techy cousin, it should be simple enough for Nina to find the boy of her dreams, right? But when she finally tracks him down, he’s different than she thought ―right down to his name. Ryan is just as cute as she remembers, but the chemistry isn’t there like it was before. After a few dates, she meets Ryan’s family: his sweet grandma, his enthusiastic sisters, and his twin brother ――Ian.

“My name’s Ian, by the way.”

“Nina.”

He knelt down beside my bleeding leg and dug around in the box. “That’s a pretty name.”

“Thanks. It’s short for Nina.” After the words popped out of my mouth, I wanted to smack myself on the forehead for sounding so stupid.

Thankfully, Ian mistook my word vomit for humor or charm or something and laughed. He pulled a couple wet wipes from a pack and cleaned my leg and cut as best as he could before shoving them into a small plastic bag. Then he spread some white ointment on the cut and unwrapped a couple of Band-Aids. His fingers were long and moved quickly like this wasn’t his first time. After he put two Band-Aids on my cut, he pressed the edges down to make sure it was firm.

This time I felt the warmth of his fingertips on my skin, and the goose bumps that rose on my arms in response.

Rubbing my arms to make them go away before he noticed, I gently stood up. “I’m okay now. Thanks.”

“Are you sure? Your face still looks kind of red.”

Embarrassed, I adjusted the sunglasses until they fell lower on my face like a shield. “No, it’s just—the sun. It’s hot today.”

He glanced up at the overcast sky. It was so thick with clouds that you could barely see the sun anywhere.

“It was sunny earlier,” I said quickly. “Like scorching sunny.”

“Yeah, Texas’s weather is pretty unpredictable.” Still crouched down, Ian leaned to the left to pack everything up. When he was done though, he still didn’t immediately get up. Instead, Ian stared at something on the rock behind me. I followed his gaze and groaned out loud in horror. There was a dark butt-shaped smudge right where I had been sitting a few seconds ago.

With a puzzled expression, his eyes slid up and down my legs—which sounds way dirtier than it was. I almost wished it was dirty so at least I’d know he was thinking of me in a cute-girl-I’m-attracted-to way instead of a weirdo-girl-he-regretted-bumping-into way.

I knew the exact moment when my embarrassing situation clicked in his head. It was almost like his brown eyes cleared—as impossible as it was. My first instinct was to bury my face in my arms and flee, but my feet were frozen in one spot.

To my surprise, Ian didn’t immediately run away. Instead, he stood up, still digging in his bag. His head ducked down until I couldn’t see his face anymore. Especially as one hand messed with his hat, tugging it side to side. I could see that his ears were flaming red though. “Well, I think I have something else in here to help you with . . . that. If you—you need it.”

“What do you—” I glanced down at my legs and his pink face. Until my eyes finally landed on the tampon and pad he held out in his hand.

Oh. My. God.

Excerpt

She looked up, and for the first time I saw another woman behind the confidence. The mask she wore had fallen off. She brushed her hand against my face. “Yes, I do. I really do.” She kissed my forehead softly at first, then again. And through the pain, I felt her warmth reaching over my parched body. I felt love radiating out from her, something I’d never had before. A feeling that totally and completely engulfed me.

“I know your pain,” she whispered. “We share the same pain…”

She started unbuttoning my shirt, kissing my chest. I turned her over, pressing my body against hers. A wave rolled over me, again and again. The duality of the pleasure of being with her and the pain of my future, all mingling together, pain and pleasure throbbing together.

I was spinning around and around: her lips and mine, her face and mine, her eyes and mine, with the light from her window, wrapping around us. I couldn’t stop the feelings, the new sensations. I wanted to cry and laugh all at once.

And then I felt “It.” ‘cause there’s no words for “It.” More than love. I looked in her eyes, and I knew that she felt “It,” too. And I knew what “It” was… Fear. The fear of losing yourself, of surrendering your soul to a love that just was. And I knew that “It” would always be there between us. This love and fear. She was shaking and trembling all over, and she held me with a strength that blocked out everything. I closed my eyes and cradled her head against my chest. She buried her lips in my skin, until I didn’t know her flesh from mine and the love took over again, shoving the fear away.

As I ran my hands over her bare legs and arms, little charges of electricity fed me with jolts of energy that kept getting stronger and stronger. I released a shower of light into her, pumping in harder and harder all the feelings, wanting and longing that I’d had. I was somewhere else. There was no bottom, no sounds, nothing. And just when I thought I couldn’t go any higher, something crashed against me, like a fist slamming against wood. And then, I realized we weren’t alone.

Knock, knock, knock.

A loud voice boomed out from outside her window. At first I thought it was a dream. My eyes didn’t want to open. I was shaking all over.

Knock, knock, knock, knock…

“Miss Davenport, we know you’re in there. Open up the door.”

Miss Davenport, or Laurel, she’d never be Miss Davenport again for me, sat up dazedly. “Who in the world?”

From outside the door we heard, “Miss Davenport, we suggest you open the door. It’s the sheriff.”

“Shit.” I shook myself alert. Quickly, I grabbed my pants and pulled them on. She threw a shirt over her head and slipped into a skirt, trying to smooth her tangled hair, walking quickly to the door.

I stayed in the other room, scooping up the rest of my things and jamming them under her bed. My heart was still beating as if it wanted to jump outta my chest, and my knees buckled weakly. Laurel opened the door slightly. I could see Sheriff Miller, and, of all people, Verna Smith in her African dress and her pa. Verna’s eyes were puffy and red, and her pa looked ready to kill somebody, presumably ME.

About the Author

People would consider Lisa Jones Gentry, the author of “Forbidden Love” a true renaissance woman, because the former entertainment attorney, became an artist, author, creative executive, and writer-producer for film, television and digital content…

Lisa discovered her passion for the creative side of the business while serving as broadcast counsel at CBS in New York City, where she was the lead attorney on deals ranging from multi-millions to billions, such as the Olympics and Major League Baseball deal. But her Hollywood calling changed from “behind-the-deal” to “behind-the-laptop”, and ultimately moved to LA to break into the business as a writer-producer. As luck would have it, the first film script that she and her writing partner wrote was optioned by Paramount.

For the next four years they had several screenplays and teleplays optioned and set up at networks and studios, including development deals. She then took that creative experience and brought it to her position as EVP of Development for the stalwart Western International Syndication, formerly a division of renowned Western International Media, once the largest media buying entity in the world. Charged with expanding the company’s traditional roster of syndicated programming into network and cable, she executive produced over 100 hours of television in various formats and genres, airing on broadcast and cable. She also structured a joint venture between French broadcasting giant TF-1, Stephen J. Cannell Productions and Western for the international distribution of a one hour dramatic series.

Though “behind-the-deal: again, she didn’t stop her work behind-the-laptop and during that time wrote her first novel, “A Dead Man Speaks.” It garnered her an NAACP Image Award nomination for Best Debut Author, followed by a Literary Critics Award nomination for best general fiction. And her creative roll continued with a First Look Deal for Lisa and her writing partner at Sony Pictures under their Screen Gems banner.

With the cataclysmic changes in the “business,” like many other writers and producers, it wasn’t long before Lisa expanded her focus to digital media and due to her writing and executive experience was recruited to be the CEO of Comedy Express, a start-up broadband network targeting the young adult male demo. Ultimately, Comedy Express was acquired by the famed National Lampoon.

Following the acquisition of Comedy Express, Lisa not only managed to write another book – this time as a co-author of the nonfiction, “So You Want to be A Lawyer,” now in its second printing –she continued her expansion into digital media and technology and worked as Co-CEO of another early stage start-up company that launched two 24/7 television networks on cable, IPTV and satellite networks outside the US in Europe and Asia. Today, Lisa is a frequent speaker on technology and digital media, at the Tribeca Film Festival, the FCC start up conference and many other venues.

As if all that she’s done isn’t enough, Lisa is also an accomplished artist, and has been exhibiting and selling her work for several years. She has had worked featured in television series and TV Movies and buyers of her work have included on air talent, Arthel Neville and television Executive Producer, Samm Art Williams.

And while she loves exploring her artistic side, Lisa has no intention of slowing down her writing, as she continues to flex her creative muscle with several TV and film projects that she’s developing as well as her current book, “Forbidden Love,” the true love story of a white nun and a black priest in the segregated fifties as told by their son Joe Steele.

Spotlight: Walk the Line by Paula Dombrowiak & Natalie Parker

(Blood & Bone Legacy, #1)

Publication date: April 22nd 2025

Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance

It was supposed to be simple: Film the tour. Build my portfolio. And for Heavens sake, keep it in my pants.

Then I met Felix Krasinski.

The captivating and infuriatingly cocky frontman of Velvet Drift commands attention everywhere he goes—including mine. Am I proud of it? No. I’m supposed to be filming their perfromance, not fantasizing about his perfect abs. I’m determined to be taken seriously, and hooking up with the ridiculously hot rockstar is the fastest way to tank my credibility.

Felix is always in control, and I’m an impulsive rule-breaker. We don’t make sense. But we can’t seem to stay away from each other.

Because, between his uptight habits and annoyingly perfect jawline, there’s more to Felix than his stage presence and legendary last name. He’s protective, vulnerable, and gets me in a way no one else does.

But my career depends on keeping things professional, and his future hinges on staying laser-focused on his band’s success.

Every heated argument, every stolen kiss, makes me want to throw caution—and professionalism—to the wind.

One thing’s certain—this summer tour is about to get a lot more complicated than I bargained for.

Walk the Line is the first book in the Blood & Bone and Turn it Up second generation series crossover. Grab this new adult, angsty, forced proximity, steamy contemporary rockstar romance. Walk the Line can be read as a standalone.

“You’re not going to hurt him, are you?” I protest as Dusty’s hulking frame fills the doorway of the trailer.

“Oh God, are you one of them vegans?” Dusty grumbles.

“Who even eats skunk?” I shake my head, and Maggie bursts into giggles beside me.

Dusty raises an eyebrow, and I realize I don’t want to know the answer to that. I just want my trailer back to ride out this godawful trip in peace. I am never eating fucking brownies again.

“Just—please don’t hurt Pepe,” I plead, staring up at Dusty with wide eyes.

“You fucking named him?” Dusty asks, while Maggie palms her face.

I shoot her a glare. “That’s his fucking name.”

“Jesus, I don’t get paid enough for this shit,” Dusty grunts.

“Give him a break—he ate five too many of Dex’s special brownies,” Maggie explains, playfully nudging my shoulder.

“Ohhh,” Dusty drawls. “Well, that’ll do it.”

Dusty sets the trap down with a thud and begins to bait it, while Maggie flings open all the windows, letting in a rush of fresh air.

“What do we do now?” I ask, frowning at them—my patience is wearing thin.

“We wait,” Dusty replies casually.

“We wait?” I throw my hands up. “I’m having the worst trip of my life, and you’re telling me to wait?”

I tap the cabinet. “I’m not fucking around, Pepe.”

“Well, that strategy is totally going to coax him out,” Maggie quips between giggles, biting her lip to suppress more laughter.

“Maybe you should sweet-talk him?”

“You’re the one he’s been talking to,” she shoots back, waving a hand at me.

I slump down into the chair. “I don’t want to be a skunk whisperer,” I whine, burying my face in my hands.

Maggie comes over, rubbing my shoulders gently. “It’s gonna be fine, really. And hey, look at the bright side, I’m not even filming this—because if I was…”

I whip my head around to glare at her. That’s all I need for this to be documented. She lifts her hands up to show that she’s not holding the camera and I relax.

Suddenly, I hear a sharp snap coming from inside the trailer, followed by the clanking of metal. We peer into the trailer to see Pepe munching on the treat like it’s a gourmet meal.

Dusty carries the cage down the steps and I lean out of the trailer, my heart racing slightly. “Where are you taking him?”

“Do you need a moment to say your goodbyes?” Dusty quips sarcastically, arching an eyebrow.

I shoot him an icy glare.

“Relax, I’m just gonna release him into the woods.”

“Can you at least not mention this to anyone?” I call after him anxiously, and he chuckles, shaking his head as he ambles away with the skunk.

“I don’t get paid enough for this shit,” I hear him say as he turns the corner.

I find Maggie spritzing my aftershave all over the trailer like it’s some magic potion.

I sit on the edge of my bed. Maggie stands before me, head tilted as she surveys me. She then pulls off my shoes, and I hear them drop to the floor. I flop back onto my pillow, feeling heavy and—let’s be honest—spent.

“You’re not leaving, are you?” I ask, grabbing her arm instinctively.

She sighs. “I guess not.” Then she settles onto the bed, facing me as I scoot over to make room for her.

I meet her gaze. Her blue eyes sparkle, and I can’t believe I’ve never noticed how the freckles dance across her nose and cheeks before.

“You’re really pretty,” I say, my voice a lazy whisper.

Maggie giggles, her cheeks flushing as she tucks her hands under her head, smiling at me. “Okay, Felix,” she says, skepticism lacing her tone.

“It’s true. I’ve thought about you ever since the first time we met.” I close my eyes despite wanting to stare at her, but the heavy feeling of sleep begins to steal me away.

“You mean when I called you a pampered rockstar?” she teases.

I smile, a lazy grin creeping across my face. “No, when I let the elevator doors close in your face.”

Excerpt

Papilio watched Empress entertain the audience with their rousing rendition of the Rolling Stones’ “Tumbling Dice.” Two inflatable white dice, two feet square, with violet pips were onstage when the song began. Twyla-Violet stormed out and kicked them into the audience as if they were soccer balls, and the crowd fought for the souvenirs. Twyla-Violet’s backslappers in the front row earned their coveted seats through their cheers. Hob had buckled to Edward’s constant demands and reserved the middle section of the first row for Empress, given the tremendous amount of money the snollygoster was spending on promotions.

Twyla-Violet was gorgeous in her violet silk chiffon dress and ankle boots. The imitation white diamonds and violet sapphires in her tiara glittered under the shining stage lights, while her powerful voice thrilled the crowd. She crouched low like a panther, working the audience and commanding the stage like a seasoned pro. She made each member of the audience feel as if she were singing directly to them. Years of ballet lessons paid off when her Jagger-like moves mixed with precision pirouettes delighted the fans. Twyla-Violet’s all-girl band wore matching white pantsuits and played brilliantly behind her but were well out of her glorious spotlight. Twyla-Violet was the only member of Empress allowed to have blonde hair, and her band had been ordered to always wear identical outfits onstage. Empress finished their performance to the wildest applause yet. Twyla-Violet waved to her loyal subjects with a slight wrist twist of her vertical hand like an empress should. Her fan club then removed bouquets of violets from under their seats and hurled them at her feet. She grabbed one and held it triumphantly over her head. Twyla-Violet screamed into her mic, “Welcome to rock ’n’ roll history in the making, America!”

Edward and his famous wife, Lovisa Nordin-Higgins, stood on the opposite side of the stage, watching their daughter’s spectacular performance. Lovisa was a stunning former fashion model from Stockholm, and Twyla-Violet was the spitting image of her. Harper, Twyla-Violet's sister, who resembled their father, stood beside her mother, holding Ivy, Twyla-Violet's red-and-white Pembroke Welsh Corgi, on a leash. At ten years old, Harper was a sweet child with curly Shirley Temple hair. She loved to write stories and dreamed of becoming a novelist after earning an English degree in college.

Delirious with power, Twyla-Violet hurled the bouquet into the air like a student throwing a graduation cap and raced to her mother and sister, who hugged her lovingly. She tried to embrace her father, but he motioned for her to get back onstage. Twyla-Violet absorbed the all-too-frequent blow of rejection and returned to the stage to face the three smiling judges. Lovisa glared at her husband, but he ignored her contemptuous stare and supervised Twyla-Violet.

Mona observed the awkward exchange among the Higgins family. “No matter how much success Twyla-Violet enjoys,” she told Gabby and Ellie, “something tells me it’ll never be good enough for her dad.”

Ellie peered across the stage at Edward. “No wonder she’s so mean.”
