Excerpt: Not In My Wildest Dreams by Jamie Hollins

About the Book

It really sucks to be in love with someone who sees you as nothing more than a friend.  Darcy Owens knows this from personal experience. From the moment she met Sean McKenna as a wary ten-year-old, he’s owned her heart. So when he asks for her help with an important construction project, she can’t say no.

Building a boutique hotel on Boston’s waterfront is a career-making opportunity, and Sean needs Darcy’s interior design expertise. She’s incredibly talented, and there is no one he trusts more. He knows he can always count on his childhood friend, but doesn’t know why he’s thinking about her tight skirts and blue eyes instead of tight deadlines and blueprints.

When Sean and Darcy’s excitement about their work turns into an entirely different kind of excitement, it’s a sexy surprise. But they soon realize that building a new relationship is more challenging than building a new hotel, especially when life-long habits and old insecurities create cracks in the foundation.

Mallory dug her hand into the mug and pulled out the next question. Her eyes scanned the paper and she laughed.

“What is your preferred shape when shaving your pubic hair?”

Quinn spit her beer back into her glass, almost choking on it. “Darcy!”

    “You first, Quinn,” Darcy smiled.

Quinn’s eyes were as big as saucers, the whites totally surrounding her light gray irises.

    “Pass!”

“Figures,” Darcy teased. “Okay, I’ll go first again. I try to keep it mostly in a little triangle shape. But I trim it pretty short so it doesn’t get too out of control down there.”

Quinn was turning three shades of purple. Mallory and Jessi both laughed hysterically, covering their faces with their hands.

“You are shameless!” Quinn yelled, looking like she didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

    “Who’s shameless?”

All heads turned to see Ewan and Sean McKenna walk through the front door. Darcy’s smile froze on her face as she stared at the two cousins who looked absolutely nothing alike. One was dark and one was fair. Both were tall, fit, and drop-dead gorgeous. Ewan was a usual suspect on the weekends. Sean, however, was not.

Damn, I’m not drunk enough to handle this.

“Darcy’s shameless,” Quinn said, now with a little grin on her face.

“Of course she is,” Sean said, smiling his million-dollar smile. “She’s Darcy,”

Nope. Definitely not drunk enough to deal with Sean McKenna.

That smile was one of Sean’s many highly effective and deadly weapons in his arsenal against the opposite sex. It had been eighteen years, and Darcy’s breath still caught every time she laid eyes on him. Strong, sculpted shoulders and a chest that narrowed into a lean and muscled abdomen.

No matter what he had on, his body looked amazing. Long, toned legs, shapely ass. His list of sexy and virile attributes could go on and on.

Combine that list with his sunny blond hair and his nonstop sense of humor, and he was a one-man woman-eater. And she didn’t mean that as an innuendo, although she could guess it was fairly accurate if the rumors served him right.

He had the confidence and charisma to charm Mother Teresa’s panties off. He was just that good.

Not that Darcy knew what it was like for Sean to charm her panties off, even though she’d been dreaming about it ever since she’d met him on her first day of school in Ballagh, a sleepy village south of Boston. She’d seen all his tricks and moves. But only because she’d helplessly watched him work them on other girls.

Sean had been the reason several lucky girls had given up their hymens. Ironically, he was and remained to be the reason she still had hers.

Call it sad. Call it impossible. Call it an abomination. Darcy was a twenty-eight-year-old virgin. It was hard to have a physical relationship when all she did was compare other men to Sean. She didn’t mean to do it. She just did.

And if that didn’t fucking split her heart in two, the fact that he considered her one of his best friends did the trick. No guy ever fucked his best gal pal. It was in the guy code of conduct or something.

Ewan pushed by his cousin, bent down, and gave Quinn a hard kiss on the lips before whispering something in her ear that made her giggle. His smile for his girlfriend was warm and made promises that told Darcy she’d likely need to sleep with the TV on. Not that they were ever loud when the darkly handsome and brooding Ewan was getting it on with her roommate. But Darcy didn’t want to risk hearing anything.

Quinn smiled up at him. “We’re almost done.”

“Done with what?” Sean asked, pulling up a chair to the table.

“We’re playing Dirty Dozen.” Mallory’s words were slightly slurred.

Sean looked over at her and raised his brows. “Dirty Dozen? Sounds scandalous. Do tell.”

Darcy noticed the way Sean’s eyes lit up. He would be the only guy she knew who would use a word like scandalous.

“We have to answer twelve questions,” Jessi answered him. “The naughtier the better.”

“Jesus,” Ewan muttered, shaking his head as he started toward the living room to watch TV.

“Naughty questions, huh?” Sean replied. “And why haven’t I been invited to join in on the fun before?”

“Because you don’t have a vagina,” Darcy deadpanned.

Sean twisted his lips at her and raised a brow.

“I have intimate knowledge of vaginas. That should count for something.”

Darcy rolled her eyes. Before she could tell Sean that no dicks were allowed at their Girls’ Night In, Jessi chimed in. “Of course you can play with us. It‘ll be fun to get a guy’s perspective.”

With the exception of Quinn, Darcy’s friends didn’t know about her feelings for Sean. Jessi and Mallory, no doubt, thought he was the hottest thing since Tabasco.

Pretty much everyone did.

Her friends had met him a few times over the years through parties someone or other had thrown. Sean very rarely ever came down to Providence, where Darcy had just finished her graduate degree and Quinn was still trudging through hers. He lived in Boston, where he had earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees, and was now partner in a general contracting firm.

“Okay, hit me,” Sean invited. “What’s this shameless question of Darcy’s?”

“What shape do you shave your pubic hair?” Darcy challenged. She should have known that he wouldn’t even bat an eye.

“Great question,” he immediately answered. “Personally, I just trim my pubes. However, if you want to know my preference for how a woman should shave hers—”

“We don’t,” Darcy quickly said.

“Yes, we do!” both Mallory and Jessi yelled at the same time.

Sean smiled at them both before continuing. “It’s gotta be tidy down there. Shaved is okay, but waxed is better. And it needs to have some shape. I think it’s unnatural for a woman to be completely bare. I personally prefer something I like to call the Martini Glass, right above the—” He stopped suddenly and frowned. “I should illustrate. Can I get a pen and paper?”

“No!” Darcy cut in.

Sean shrugged, clearly loving how uncomfortable she was.

“My turn to ask a question.” He reached in to pull out a piece of paper. Sean smiled as he read it to himself before turning that blinding grin on the rest of the table.

“God, this is a great game,” he laughed. “Okay, the question is: When, where, how, and to whom did you lose your virginity?”

All the blood seemed to drain from Darcy’s head.

She’d been surprised that this question hadn’t come up the first few times they’d played the Dirty Dozen. It wasn’t that she was trying to keep her virginity a secret. She just never talked about it. Why the hell did it have to come up now, when Sean was here, for Christ’s sake?

Fuck, she was nowhere near drunk enough for this.

Spotlight: Tangled in Texas by Kari Lynn Dell

It took 32 seconds to end his career.
But it only took 1 to change his life.

Thirty-two seconds. That’s how long it took for Delon Sanchez’s life to end. One minute he was the best bronc rider in the Panhandle and the next he was nothing. Knee shattered, future in question, all he can do is pull together the pieces…and wonder what cruel trick of fate has thrown him into the path of his ex, the oh-so-perfect Tori Patterson.

Tori’s come home after her husband’s death, intent on escaping the public eye. It’s just her luck that Delon limps into her physical therapy office, desperate for help. All hard-packed muscle and dark-eyed temptation, he’s never been anything but a bad idea. And yet, seeing him again, Tori can’t remember what made her choose foolish pride over love…or why, with this second, final chance to right old wrongs, the smartest choice would be to run from this gorgeous rodeo boy as fast as her boots can take her.

Sortin’ the Herd—How a Real Cowgirl Cuts Off the Strays

Nowadays pretty much anyone can pop online and order up a full set of cowboy duds to wear to their nearest rodeo. Which I think is awesome, by the way. The companies that sell those hats, boots and peart snap shirts are also the sponsors that keep my favorite sport in business. I’d be thrilled to pull into the next rodeo and see a Stetson or Resistol on every head, and Justin or Ariat boots on every pair of feet. But it also makes it harder for a girl to tell…which are the real cowboys, and which are just playing the part?

Luckily, it doesn’t take long to sort off the bleacher buckaroos. I’ve put together a few never-fail tips to help you identify the wanna-be’s, like this one:

His cowboy hat has been shaped in the style of Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw or Jason Aldean. All great singers. Not cowboys. Ditto for boots with pointy toes. If you want to look to a celebrity for fashion guidance, George Strait is the gold standard. He’s also a real cowboy who rides, ropes, and annually hosts one of the richest and most prestigious roping competitions in the country. In the ranch and rodeo world he is, as Garth Brooks so aptly said, the King of Cool. Oh, and did I mention he can sing?

Take note of the word in bold face above. Excerpt

They sat in the dark, staring at the television and taking comfort from the presence of another human being. A fellow refugee from reality, if only for a few hours. Crazy, to get even this close when she seemed dead set on leaving again, but as long as he knew, as long he didn’t let himself dream, he was safe, wasn’t he?

He woke to someone jostling his pillow. He forced his eyes open and found Tori leaning over him, trying to tug her coat from the arm of the couch, under his head.

“What time is it?” he mumbled, twisting around to look out the window. Pitch dark.

“After midnight. We both slept a while.”

She gave the jacket another tug, but it was pinned under his shoulder. He was warm and relaxed, still half asleep. Before his mind could fully engage, he reached up and caught her wrist. She froze, her eyes wide and wary in the dim light.

“What if I said I don’t want to just be friends?” he asked, his voice raspy with sleep.

She stared down at him, emotions flickering across her face so fast he couldn’t identify any of them. “I would say that’s probably not the smartest thing we could do, given the situation.”

“And if I said I’m willing to take my chances?”

She took her sweet time thinking it over. “I need some time to…adjust my expectations.”

He stroked the tender underside of her wrist with his thumb, watching as her lips parted on a swift intake of air. He might not know her mind, but he knew her body, and he remembered exactly how she liked to be touched. “How long?”

“I don’t know. This thing with my parents…”

“Will you let me know when you’re ready?”

She shook her head and his heart sank, but then she blew out a reluctant sigh. “Check back with me in a couple of weeks.”

“The middle of February?” he asked, unable to leave it alone.

She gave a halfhearted shrug, her gaze tracking to the door, though she still didn’t pull away from his touch. “Sure. Why not?”

He could think of a dozen reasons—things he’d done, and she’d done, and all the ways they could hurt each other all over again—but he stroked her wrist one more time before sitting up to free her jacket. She pulled it on, tugged the zipper clear to her chin, and stuffed her hands in the pockets.

“You realize I’m a lousy emotional bet.”

“Unlike me.”

She gave a low, short laugh. “Think of the magic we could make together.”

He didn’t have to imagine. He had a perfectly good memory. As if reading his mind, she said, “I’m not that girl, Delon.”

“You’re a lot tougher.”

She smiled slightly at her own words. “I’m also a lot more…difficult.”

No kidding. But he needed to borrow some of that toughness, from someone who’d gone through the worst and was emerging from the other side, singed around the edges but not destroyed. Tori understood the snarl of anger and guilt in his gut because it wasn’t so different than what she felt about how Willy died.

“I’d like to get to know this you,” he said softly.

“I might not be ready to decide who I am yet.”

“Decide?” He laughed, incredulous. “You just get to make it up for yourself?”

“Why not? Didn’t you decide who you wanted to be?”

His fists clenched in the plush throw. “We don’t all have the luxury of reinventing our lives.”

She gave him a long, level stare. His eyes dropped first. Her voice was low and surprisingly gentle. “Try it, Delon. You might be less likely to feel like punching strangers in bars.”

She brushed a fingertip as light as a kiss across his cheek, and left him to sleep on it.

Excerpt: For Finlay by J. Nathan

About the Book

Finlay Thatcher is a lost soul, guilt-ridden after the death of her twin brother. When Alabama's football coach gives her the opportunity to work for him, she knows it's her chance to move on, even if it means living her brother's dream.

Caden Brooks is Alabama's star quarterback. He's got it all. The attention of adoring fans. A girlfriend who'd do anything to hold on to him. And a future in the pros. He's getting along just fine until Finlay steps into his life, despising him at first sight and pushing his buttons like no other.

Unfortunately for Finlay, and her attempt to keep Caden at arm's length, there's nothing Caden loves more than a challenge. The problem with this challenge is she comes with a secret that has the power to destroy everything.

Excerpt

“Do me a favor and don’t become some crazy stalker,” I warned Caden as he parked in front of my dorm, insisting on driving the final leg of our trip.

He turned to me with a grin. “Chances are I will. You have that effect on me.”

“Well, just don’t show up late at night looking to get busy.”

He threw back his head and his laughter filled the rental car.

“I’m serious,” I said with a straight face. “I may be entertaining another guy. Or worse, I have a roommate who’ll not only stay for the action, but’ll ask to join in.”

The idea froze his features. “Are you kidding?”

My brows slanted. “She’s got the no-filter thing you’ve got going on, so she’d definitely ask. But it’s never happening.”

He leaned toward me with quirked lips. “Well that’s good. Because you’re definitely all I can handle.” He pressed his lips to mine, the kiss going straight to my knees. Even with students passing by on their way home from their Monday afternoon classes—the ones we missed, Caden had no intention of stopping, clutching my cheeks and holding me to him.

I could feel myself falling. Falling hard. And it scared the hell out of me. One of us had to stop before things got too intense right there for all to see. So I grabbed the door handle and pulled back from him, leaving us both dragging air into our lungs as if starved for it. “I’ve got to get inside.”

“That’s what I’m thinking,” he said with a devilish grin that did crazy things to my insides.

“Can you turn anything I say into something dirty?”

He considered my question. “Is that a challenge or a question?”

I rolled my eyes, which just brought out a bigger smile. I wished I could smile too, but the thought that we’d be heading back to the real world made me uneasy. I didn’t want to act like I expected anything from him now that our road trip had ended. I wouldn’t be that girl. “So…I guess I’ll see you at practice tomorrow.” I tried to step out of the car, but he grabbed my wrist and pulled me back in.

He stared me down, looking more pissed than I’d seen him with Grady. “Yes, you’ll see me at practice tomorrow. But you’ll see me tonight because you’re staying at my place.”

The tenseness I’d felt just seconds before disappeared. “Is that a challenge or a question?”

He laughed. “That’s me asking you to stay with me tonight.”

Spotlight: When a Rogue Loves A Woman by Samantha Holt

About the Book

Notorious rogue, Lord Nathaniel Kingsley always tended to leap without thinking. Becoming a smuggler, adopting a sheep, getting engaged to Miss Patience Grey….

Patience has no need for a fiancé, or a husband. For once in her life, she wants to prove she’s just as good as a man and she does not need Nathaniel Kingsley getting in her way. With her brother injured, it is up to her to continue her family’s work…and that means tracking down a French spy and ensuring said spy will turn.

Unfortunately, no one believes she can do it alone. Which is where Nathaniel comes in.
Nate is happy to be of service. Why pass up the opportunity to repay an old friend, especially with a little intrigue along the way? Find the spy, play escort to Patience, return home to continue smuggling. Easy.

Or at least it would be if the stubborn Patience would let him do his job. The breeches-wearing woman is determined to do it all alone and, he has to admit, there’s something quite distracting about a woman in men’s clothes.

Can he keep his attention from her long enough to complete their mission and persuade Patience to let him do his job and protect her? A job he’s beginning to find he’s enjoying a lot more than he thought he would…

Excerpt

“I hasten to add,” Patience said, far too matter-of-factly for a woman who was practically naked, “that this is not the first time you have seen me in a man’s shirt.”

“Nor will it be the last, I’m sure,” Nate drawled. “But I have never seen you in only a man’s shirt.”

And what a sight to behold it was.

He’d been aware that Patience had some redeeming qualities. Two to be precise. The way the cotton carefully caressed her breasts and drew his attention had him wondering if he’d been spending too much time with the breast-obsessed Drake. He was normally an arse man.

Not when it came to Patience it seemed. But it was not only her breasts that drew his attention. Her legs were surprisingly long for a short woman. Though not slender, they were strong and capable-looking. Just the sort of legs perfect for when the woman was on t—

“Stop staring,” she hissed.

“You’re staring too.”

He had only just noticed. After all, he’d been far too busy leering at the unexpected delights that had been hiding under those baggy masculine clothes. Why did she hide herself? No doubt she considered herself free, unconstrained by womanly garments, but he suspected it was more to do with disguising herself than anything, whether she was aware of that or not.

But she was staring, and she certainly was not hiding it. Her gaze ran over him like a that of a ravenous wolf. She should have licked her lips to finish off the picture. As it was, her top teeth came down to bite upon her plump bottom lip. He near groaned.

“I am not staring,” she said, her voice a raspy whisper.

She was. Still. Nate lifted his chin a tad and straightened his shoulders. He was no stranger to female admiration but, he had to confess, Patience admiring him did more for his pride than one hundred looks from society ladies. Given that she loathed the very air he breathed, it was quite an achievement.

Nate took a step closer. A little experiment just to see. She did not move, instead seeming to sway slightly into him.

“You stubbed your toe?” he asked, keeping his voice low.

Oh, she was far too much fun to toy with in every way. And, of course, that was what it was. A game. What else could life be for a second son? No responsibilities, no heirs to bear, no future set forth for him. Had he been able to join the military perhaps it would have been different but he would not dwell on that fact. He would only play so far, of course. They had a mission to do and while he enjoyed teasing her, he did not touch virgins. Unless they begged and there was little chance of recourse, naturally. But he doubted Patience would ever beg.

“Pardon?” she asked, her gaze remaining latched upon his chest.

“You stubbed your toe?”

She nodded, her teeth still digging into that lip delightfully and making him want to pull it between his own teeth and suck at it until it was even more plump and red.

Nate put his hands to her waist and heard that satisfying inhalation of surprise. She stiffened but he had little troubles lifting the small woman onto the table.

“Which foot?”

She peered at him as if he was speaking in a foreign language.

“Parlez vous Anglais? Which foot?”

“The left.”

He took her foot in his hand and eyed the toe in the candlelight.

“What are you—”

Apparently, the fight had returned. She tried to wriggle her foot away from him but he kept it gripped tight around her ankle.

“Nathaniel, put me down.”

Alas, the effect of his bare chest had not lasted as long as he had hoped. Had she continued to be so malleable it would have been easy to have this mission completed swiftly. He would have to try harder next time. He smirked at the idea of walking around entirely naked simply to ensure he did not get entirely dominated by this woman.

Spotlight: Journey to the Rift by Cathi Shaw

Genre: YA Fantasy
Release Date: November 3rd 2016
Ink Smith Publishing

About the Book

A dangerous quest into a forbidden land wasn’t exactly what Brijit Carnesîr was planning after her graduation from the Academy. For years she has looked forward starting her life as a member of the Coimirceoirí and she is thrilled to discover that she has been chosen as the Academy Apprentice of her year. But despite the fact that she has been longing to go to Séreméla and work with the Elders, it soon becomes apparent that her fate isn’t as rosy as it appears to be. First, she is paired up with a grumpy male apprentice from Stone Mountain, Weylon Forborrow. Second, it doesn’t take her long to discover that the Elders are not taking her to Séreméla, as tradition dictates. Instead, Weylon and her are sent to The Rift, a dead land tainted with evil. Even before they join the Elder royalty at Tèarmann, an ancient fortress on the cusp of the Rift, Brijit discovers that the Elders are hiding too many things. She is given the task of helping the Princess in birthing the long awaited Queen of the Elders but nothing is as it seems. There is talk of an old and forgotten Prophecy, Weylon is attacked by a creature from the Rift and her grandmother is killed, after revealing a secret that rocks everything Brijit knows about her past. Soon Brijit questions everything she had been led to believe and, worse, she realizes that the future of Séreméla and all of Five Corners is in jeopardy, unless she can find a way to save it!

Excerpt

The Elders took the known pieces of the Prophecy as law. But a complete copy of the ancient text had not been found, and much of the writing on the scraps had never been translated. At first this was because it wasn’t seen as important to modern-day Séreméla but later, as the Prophecy’s following grew, the Elders found they were unable to translate the bits of the document in their possession because it was written in an ancient Elder dialect that was almost completely forgotten today. Only the Draíodóir and a few ancient Elder scribes knew anything about the dialect, and none of them were fluent in it.

It was due to their devotion to the mythical writings that the Elders had been waiting for a female ruler for twelve generations. Of course if the first child born to the current royal family was a boy, he would be much loved, but it was understood that he would only be a Crown Prince, like his father. The Elders had been without a queen for many years, and their hopes lay with the child sleeping in the princess’s womb. Only a queen could make decisions for the Elders without needing guidance from the Elder Council.

As Weylon understood it, not everyone wished this girl-child would come. There were some who wanted the princess to give birth to a son. Then there would be no official ruler, just another Crown Prince who would be guided by the council. The Elder Council was split between wanting a queen and wanting to continue to make most of the decisions for the people.

It was more than politics behind the Elders’ wish for a queen. Weylon did not understand it all, but he sensed the growing desperation in the Elder Council members who had met with Gregor and the other senior Coimirceoirí. There had been many closed-door meetings that Weylon could not access, even with his abilities. Those meetings had been carefully shielded, which was suspicious. He had heard snippets of the Prophecy mentioned as well, but when he had pushed Gregor on the topic, his mentor had become angry and silent.

There was so much Weylon did not understand, but he knew enough about politics to know that he and the Coimirceoirí female apprentice were stepping into a potentially dangerous situation.

Finn shifted beside him, sensing his dark thoughts. But Weylon kept them to himself. The less his friend knew, the safer he would be.

“Do you know where you will be sent?” Weylon asked, changing the topic abruptly.

Finn nodded slowly. “The Wastelands.” His tone was flat.

Weylon looked at his friend closely. Finn looked miserable. “Why would they send you there?”

It didn’t make sense. The Wastelands were on the outer reaches of the Outlands. While they were farther south than The Rift, the land there had been touched by the evil, long ago. Nothing grew in that part of Five Corners and as a result, almost no one lived there. It was unheard of for the Elders to send two Coimirceoirí there.

“I don’t know,” his friend answered with a dark expression. Finn was a gifted Coimirceoirí, not as talented as Weylon, but, in any other year, he would have been one of the top picks of the class. He just had the misfortune of being Weylon’s peer.

“Who are they sending with you?” Weylon couldn’t help asking, trying to imagine which of the silly girls would be accompanying his friend.

“No one.”

Weylon stared at him in disbelief. “They never send Coimirceoirí apprentices on assignments alone.”

Finn gave him a bitter smile. “I guess they do now.”

Spotlight: Distraction (Club Destiny #8) by Nicole Edwards

About the Book

Time doesn’t always heal a broken heart. Sometimes the only thing it does is fill the darkness with more shadows, more pain.

Dylan Thomas has spent the past decade living in the shadows, mourning the loss of his wife, his best friend, his very reason for breathing. He long ago accepted that he would never feel again, that he was damned to a world without light, without hope. That was the day the bottle won, and he gave himself over to the darkness.

Until the one night that rocked his brittle, crumbling world on its axis. She told him what they shared was simply a distraction, a way to forget for a little while. It would’ve been, except the tiny glimpse of how it feels to live again, to feel again, gives him the strength he needs to pull himself up by his boot straps. But sobriety comes one day at a time, and three years later may be three years too late.
