Spotlight: Never Expected You by Jody Holford

When Zach Mason, former army sergeant turned veterinarian for war-wounded animals, returns home, the decision to stay is easy. But convincing the only other vet in town to hire him is a good deal harder. It doesn’t help that the beautiful, intelligent, and stubborn Stella Lane is determined to make his life hell.

Stella doesn’t take outside help easily—she’s been let down in the past, most recently by her ex, just as she’d begun to plan their wedding. Trusting Zach with her animals is one thing, but trusting him with more is a hard pass. Too bad the handsome vet is nothing but temptation. And her new roommate...

Taking a deep breath, he saw that crease in her forehead that meant she was overthinking things. “Zach. What happened earlier can’t happen again ,” she said. Her voice was clear and calm, like crystal in the quiet of the forest.

He knew that. They worked together and though he didn’t know her story, he knew enough about life to know mixing business and pleasure, especially a very tiny business where they’d be glued at the hip, had the potential to end poorly. He tried to joke his way out of having a conversation he didn’t want to have. “You mean you getting jealous of my kissing another woman?”

Her mouth dropped open like she couldn’t believe he’d said that. Then she rolled her eyes and huffed out a half-laugh, half-breath. “The kissing in general.”

Zach nodded. She was right. Didn’t mean he had to like it.

“I know. I get it. I didn’t mean for it to happen today. I’d like to think I’m not the only one who’s been fighting whatever this is between us. But I also know that we want different things. My main priority is making you see what we could have together. Professionally.”

She continued to stare at him and he wasn’t sure what to make of her expression. Would she admit that she was pushing down her own feelings?

“What are we doing here, Zach?”

Of course not. Stella Lane, admit weakness? “I’ll tell you if you come here and trust me for five seconds.” He didn’t want to be pissed that the only thing she had to say about the kiss that had rocked his world, was ‘never again.” He didn’t think either of them believed it, but he’d leave it alone for now. This is what you want. Stop being a jackass. You don’t want this complication.

Stella walked to the front of her vehicle like she was on a plank over an alligator-filled body of water.

When she was in front of him, he reached for her and paused. “I’m going to lift you onto the hood of the jeep. Then I’ll climb up beside you. Don’t argue.”

She started to, but he did as he said, putting his hands on her hips, loving the feel of them, and boosted her up. Her hands came to his shoulders, gripped there, and then she was on the hood. He jumped up beside her so they were sitting side by side.

“We going to stare at the stars? I’m not making out with you.”

He pushed back, leaned on the windshield and grinned. “Again. You mean you’re not making out with me again.”

She looked up at the sky. “I’m pretending you didn’t say that.”

“Mature,” he said, liking the way her lips curved up as he stared at her profile. “We could look at the stars if we wait for it to get darker. You ever sit still long enough to do something so peaceful?”

He wouldn’t admit, not out loud, that she was the kind of woman who made a man want to look at the stars. Maybe even wish on them.

She was perpetual motion in human form. Part of him wondered if that was because standing still, stopping, hurt. He knew the feeling. After Travis had died, he couldn’t stop to breathe or it crushed him. So, he’d packed up, run off, and put every angry, hurt feeling away in a box and focused on the future. On moving forward. Over time, he’d had to unpack those feelings, sort through them, and give himself time to fall apart.

He looked over at Stella where she sat, breathing in the fresh air, her hair loose around her shoulders. Had she ever given herself the luxury of falling apart? It hadn’t been that long since her father died. Those kind of cracks in someone’s heart didn’t fade quickly, if ever.

“How you feeling, Doc?”

Stella turned her head to look at him. “Tired.”

He feigned shock. “I thought superheroes didn’t get tired.”

She turned her head and smiled at him and that smile felt almost as intimate as their kiss. Fuck. He was in big trouble if a couple stars, a gorgeous woman, and a smile were turning him inside out and making him forget the reason he was here.

Spotlight: Dating the Enemy by Nicole Williams

Ms. Romance, Hannah Arden, writes one of the top read relationship advice columns in the nation. Mr. Reality, Brooks North, writes the top read relationship advice column.

Ms. Romance believes in true love and soul mates. Mr. Reality believes love is a term humanity has assigned to the primal instinct to procreate. She believes in fate—he in chance. She knows there’s one right person for everyone—he knows there are multiple ones. The two writers couldn’t be more polarized on relationships. They’re professional rivals, and philosophical antagonists.

For eight years, their battles have been fought with words and ink. That changes when they apply for the same position at the World Times and find themselves face-to-face for the first time. Brooks isn’t the sour-faced, antiquity of a man Hannah pictured. And Hannah isn’t exactly the middle-aged shrew with cat hair on her housedress that Brooks imagined either.

In lieu of competing for the promotion traditional ways, the two writers are presented with playing the leading roles in a social experiment unlike any before. Can a person be tricked into falling in love? Can a relationship be crafted under the right string of circumstances? Hannah knows the answer. So does Brooks.

Agreeing to the terms, the two set out on a three-month dating experiment, live-streamed for the world to watch. All Hannah has to do to win is not fall in love with the narcissistic brute. All Brooks has to do is get the starry-eyed dreamer to fall in love with him. Both are so confident in their philosophies, they expect the challenge to be easy.

With the world watching, Brooks and Hannah will be forced to confront their beliefs and conclude, once and for all, who’s right. The answer is one neither of them saw coming.

“Where do you think you’re going?”
I jolted. Brooks had an annoying talent of being able to appear out of thin air. “As far away from this dance floor as I can get.”
“But we haven’t danced yet.” Brooks crept in front of my path, forcing me to stop or crash into him.
Braking to a stop, I shot him a look. “I’ll be sure to shed some tears for that later. When I’m asleep.”
“Someone’s notably grumpier now than they were earlier.” His eyes narrowed in an investigative kind of way. “Methinks you weren’t totally forthcoming about you minding if I danced with other women.”
The cameraman was leaning in, our ever-present third wheel, but I didn’t feel the need to lower my voice. “Methinks you were onto something when you expressed trepidation over your manhood’s functioning properties after tonight.”
Brooks let out a low whistle. “Under the right circumstances, those words, from that mouth, would be such a turn-on.”
“The right circumstances being what? Your standing appointment with a dungeon and a dominatrix?”
One dark brow lifted. “Bad kitty.”
“No. Grumpy cat.” I circled my face before going around him.
His arm whipped out, cinching around my waist to draw me back to him. “Let’s see if I can help with that.” His hand found mine, lifting it, while his other secured at my back, bringing me closer. And closer.
And . . .
“Brooks,” I hissed, remembering the camera before I put into words what I’d just felt.
He didn’t appear the slightest bit fazed. “What was that about my functioning manhood?”
“I don’t want to feel it digging into my stomach when I’m trying to focus on tangoing.”
“Then you shouldn’t have worn that dress.”
“And we’ll lump that in the category known as victim-blaming,” I muttered, trying to ignore the hard swell rubbing against my midsection.
“It’s not your fault my dick has a thing for your dress.” Brooks didn’t lower his voice at all. “It’s his fault, one hundred and ten percent. Total case of dick-blaming right here.”

Read an excerpt from A Tall, Dark Cowboy Christmas by Maisey Yates

It’s Christmas in Gold Valley, and this wounded widower is about to get another shot at love…

Grant Dodge didn’t expect to find a woman sleeping in an abandoned cabin on his family ranch. Or to find her so intriguing. Unlike every other woman in town, McKenna Tate doesn’t know Grant’s a widower. There’s no pity in the looks she gives him. McKenna wants him, and Grant has forgotten what it’s like to feel like a man. A no-strings fling for Christmas might be the kind of holiday cheer Grant needs…

With only a suitcase to her name, McKenna came to Gold Valley to confront her birth father. She didn’t plan to work at the Dodge ranch or fall for the gorgeous cowboy who keeps his heart roped off. But there’s no denying the way their broken pieces fit together. Hope brought her to Gold Valley—but will it be the gift that could finally heal Grant, and McKenna’s own wounded heart?

Also includes a bonus Gold Valley novella, Snowed in with the Cowboy!

Excerpt

Grant Dodge was alone. And that was how he liked it.

He had spent the entire day out in the cold mountain air conducting roping demonstrations and leading trail rides. Not that he minded any of those things in isolation. It was the addition of people that made them somewhat challenging.

Worse than having to deal with people in a general sense was dealing with people who recognized him.

Not the typical small-town recognition; he was used to that. Though he could live without getting sad widower face from people he barely knew in the grocery store, but even then, at least it was people who knew him because he’d lived in Gold Valley all his life.

What really got to him was the people who recognized him from the news stories.

Eight years hadn’t done anything to make those moments less weird. People often couldn’t place where they knew him from, but they knew they did. And they would press, and press, until he told them.

The woman who had recognized him today had been a grandmother. A great-grandmother, even. Sweet and gray-haired and looking at him with sympathetic eyes that made him want to jump off the nearest bridge.

It always seemed worse around the holidays. Perhaps because of the sentimentality people seemed to feel that time of year. And tried to inflict on him.

He didn’t really know.

Whatever the reason, he seemed to have an uptick in well-meaning-but-irritating interactions.

Maybe that was why he always wanted to drink more this time of year, too.

He shook his head and settled down into his chair, looking around the small, cozy cabin that he called home. And then he looked into the full, inviting whiskey glass he called salvation.

He didn’t have a problem or anything. He was functional. He considered that the benchmark. Low though it might be.

He was functional enough that his family mostly joked about his drinking, which meant it was probably fine.

But the one thing he didn’t want to do was get in bed at night stone-cold sober. Sometimes he could. When the long, hard day of work came inside with him, resting on aching shoulders and the lower back that was getting touchier with each passing year—because age. Not that thirty-four was exceptionally aged, not at all. But physical labor had a way of speeding all that up.

But then, the alternative had been to spend the rest of his life working at the damned power company, living in a little house on a quiet street in a neighborhood tucked back behind the main street of Gold Valley living the life of a man lost in suburban bliss, without any of the trappings that generally made it blissful.

No children.

No wife.

Not anymore.

He never had the children, but there had been a time when he and Lindsay had hoped for them. Even though…

That had always been a pipe dream, he supposed.
