Read an excerpt from Just One Love by Jami Wagner

My entire life is a lie.
He launched my salty reputation.
Yet, here I am, doing him another favor so he can get what he wants—maybe then I can dislodge him from my heart.

There’s an emptiness in my life.

Yet I have everything I need, or at least, I thought I did.
It was supposed to be a simple deal between friends. Friends? Yeah, right. I should have known we’re too volatile for that.

Tyler
“Holy shit, Maron. I’m starting to realize why you never told anyone about your fiancée,” Rob says from his seat across an unlit fire pit next to the volleyball nets.
I twist in my chair to see exactly what he’s talking about.
Holy hell.
Abby is heading our way with a giant grin. She’s wearing a pair of high-waisted shorts that make her legs look extra long with a soft green crop top under a blue and white jacket thing, that I honestly don’t know what its purpose is as it slips off her shoulders. Her hair is pulled back into a side braid, and she looks fucking stunning.
I can’t take my eyes of off her. Off her smile. Off the way her attention is solely on me.
By the time I pick my jaw up off the sand, I notice that I’m not the only guy staring at her. Fuck. If this is the response she gets by just wearing this outfit, I don’t even want to know how they react when they see her in a bikini.
Actually, I won’t know, because I’m pretty sure right now, right this moment, any water activities are off the schedule for me and Abby.
“Hey,” she says, grinning up at me when I meet her halfway. “What’s with the look?” she points to my face and then looks behind her.
“Nothing,” I say, and I hope to god I manage to put some other expression on my face. Anything that isn’t hinting how caveman I’m about to go.
I clear my throat. “Why’d you change?”
“Because it’s hot out and I want to be comfortable.”
“Well … you forgot the other half of your shorts” is the most genius thing I can come up with.
Abby laughs and then leans into me. Cucumber is all I can smell.
“Does my outfit bother you?’
“No,” I answer quickly. Probably too quickly. I look past her to find something else to focus on. Yes. Good. The kid wiping down the paddleboard. Great.
Abby lifts to her tiptoes, and her breath brushes across my neck as she whispers, “I think it does.”
I shake my head.
Her laughter goes straight to my groin.
“I wonder what else I can do to get you all worked up,” she says right before she heads toward the others with small skips. She grins over her shoulder, and thank god she’s far enough away that she doesn’t hear me growl.
I’m trying to maintain some self-control, but she’s making it hard. Both mentally and physically.
“Tyler, are you in on this game?” Sandy asks.
“Eh, I might sit this one out,” I say. I need to pull myself together.
“Of course he will,” Abby says. “He hates losing.” Her flirtatious tone releases a small chuckle.
“I wouldn’t lose,” I say.
She fails at not smiling as she shrugs. “I guess we’ll never know.”
“I wouldn’t.”
“If you say so.”
“Abby,” I warn.
“Tyler,” she says softly, and that does it.
“I’m in.” I hop out of my seat. “You’re going down.”
“We’ll see,” she says.

Spotlight: Cold Spell by Mia London & Susan Sheehey

She can't stand him. He thinks she's never more adorable than when she's pissed at him.

Liddy Drake would rather gamble on double black diamond runs than take a chance on love. Escaping dreary San Francisco for a Colorado mountain resort with her besties is just what the doctor ordered. But an injury on the first day lands her in the lap of a loud-mouthed ski instructor who knows exactly how to get under her skin. She doesn’t have time to waste on a playboy with a too-easy laugh and gorgeous blue eyes.

Luke Sawyer left New York ten years ago for the ski runs of Colorado, concealing his identity as a Rothchild heir. He’d seen money change too many people, never for good. Scrappy, sassy, and oh-so-sexy Liddy doesn’t fall for the mask of his over-the-top charm. He accepts the challenge to show her his true self.

Their chemistry is enough to melt snow-capped mountains, until she finds out the truth. There’s no way her humble background could compete with America’s royalty. How can he melt the ice around her heart and convince her that Mr. Wrong is actually Mr. Right, who loves her just the way she is?

“Anyone need skiing lessons? We have the best instructors on the planet, right here at Buffalo Ridge. Or at least the best ones who showed up to their final exams.” He grinned and got a few chuckles from bystanders. “We promise full support and positive reinforcement, and will only make fun of you behind your back. We encourage everyone to take a nice full shot of whiskey before they put on their skis, to help loosen up your muscles and your wallets for extra tips.”

“Oh, brother,” Liddy mumbled under her breath, and pushed through a crowd of teenagers watching the man’s pathetic excuse for a sales pitch.

The instructor continued, “Safety is our top priority, followed closely by leaving all inhibitions at the door.”

Just as I expected—one of those guys.

Liddy had almost made it to the end of the hallway.

“You, the gorgeous woman in the white coat trying to sneak by...”

Liddy froze. And cringed.

The man grinned. “You look like you could use ski lessons. Or at least a stiff drink at the bar.”

She straightened her spine, and addressed him eye-to-eye, despite all the gawkers and bystanders. “Are you the instructor? My instructor?”

“I can be, for you.”

Liddy smiled. “Then, no thanks.”

The man’s smile slipped. A few guests oohed at the burn, and others chuckled.

“Why not?” he asked.

Never mind that I ski black diamonds, I just don’t like you. “If it were with one of the others, I might consider it.”

A few more hisses came from the crowd.
She turned to find the rental shop, but she heard his footsteps behind her, trying to follow.

“Wait, you don’t like me? Everyone likes me.”

“I can’t imagine why,” Liddy threw over her shoulder.

He laughed, the sound of his voice much closer than before. “Why don’t you like me?”

“You’re obnoxious. And I already know how to ski.”

“I could make you better.”

She rolled her eyes. “Modesty is so hard to find these days.”

“I’m not being cocky, just trying to find the best way to talk to you more. It’s not every day an angel walks into Buffalo Ridge.”

About Mia:

Mia loves to write!

She’s been reading fiction for years and finally decided that the images and scenes floating around in her head needed to make it to paper.

She’s a huge fan of romance, highly optimistic, and wildly faithful to the HEA (happily ever after). She’s inspired by most anything around her. And her biggest obstacle is not having enough time to get it all down on paper (or my computer, as the case may be).

Her goal is create a fantasy you will enjoy with characters you could love.

She lives in Texas with her attentive, loving, super-model husband, and her perfectly behaved, brilliant children. Her produce never wilts, there are no weeds in her flowerbeds, and chocolate is her favorite food group.
And then she wakes up.

Spotlight: Poohsticks Bridge by The Birch Twins

Poohsticks Bridge
by The Birch Twins
Genre: Romantic Fiction

Beginning as a childhood game, Poohsticks Bridge tells the sweet story of a friendship between two children that, through the years, blossoms into adult love with an unbreakable bond and faith in one another. John and Melissa are tested throughout their lives by hardships, pain, and separation, yet their love and determination to live life together to its fullest never falters. In today’s culture of having everything, this couple shows us how a few, simple things can lead to a satisfying and fulfilling life.

Poignant in the extreme, you’ll want to keep the tissues nearby. These two will make you laugh, cry, and fall in love … with life and with them.

I write under the name “The Birch Twins.” Helen, my twin, didn’t live to see life, and so I write for her. I’m a full time poverty stricken doll artist who took to writing as I seemed to spend more time writing out little back stories for the characters I created. My first book The Life of LOL was written in five weeks, and was about gangsters, grifters and drifters. Lots of cartoon slapstick violence mixed with a serious message.
Poohsticks Bridge, the new novel, shows my twin’s voice at is strongest as it tells the story of a little boy who begins to grow up lonely and alone, until he meets a little girl. It’s a glimpse of a life that Helen and I could have had together. She writes through me, I can feel her presence and hear her voice. Her tone is often wistful, low on movement, mature and often quiet, while I am brash and loud and full of silly car chases and boyhood dreams of rockets to the moon. We have the perfect writing partnership.

EXCERPT:

“There is one thing we must do,” Liam interrupted my thoughts, and I startled, sitting up to face him. “I have made a second vow. My allegiance. But now more than ever we must convince my father of the strength of our bond.”

I stood and bolted across the room to stop in front of the window. “You know how I feel about this, Liam.”

He rose to his feet and crossed his arms. “It’s the only way I can truly protect you from my father. It would be binding.”

“Somehow, I don’t believe that. I have seen how the Fae treat so-called binding laws.” I stared into the garden below writhing in a mass of vines, the giant moon hanging low in the sky, unmoving. The sky remained a bottomless shade of black, a hideous abyss that never changed. How did a garden grow in this eternal night? Despite the shadows, pale flowers bloomed en masse, their delicate faces turned toward the moonlight, seeking whatever life they could find. My reflection in the window stretched across the wretched scene below, a stark face, hollow eyes.

Liam stood beside me, the muscles in his shoulders tensing. “I must fight for my father, I swore to that. But as my wife, you have a better chance of survival while we work toward breaking your curse. No one can hurt you then. It’s how marriage works here. They will leave you alone.”

I snorted. “You make it sound so romantic.”

“Do you want me to seduce you?” Liam growled, running his fingers through his hair. “Would you like me to tell you how your eyes are the color of rain? Your hair as scarlet as a red sky at sea? I can create endless metaphors for you, Catherine.”

“Stop.” I rolled my eyes and blew my hair out of my face.

“Why won’t you accept my protection?” His voice rose, laced with anger. “In my age, we didn’t place much stock in love. Marriage was a transaction like any other.”

“I don’t care about love,” I exclaimed, throwing my hands in the air.

“Good!” Liam shouted over me, his fists clenched at his side. “Then it shouldn’t matter to you.”

Of course it mattered. It was one thing to give my blood to Liam, as ghastly as that was, but marriage was impossible. In spite of what Liam said, it meant a partnership, closeness, intimacy. Perhaps I could have done that with another Fae, someone who didn’t spark a bolt of electricity down my spine each time his thumb grazed over mine, every time he glanced at me with his big, unnaturally blue eyes. It was never like that with Stephen, or the few partners I had in college. My body was present, and yet faraway. It was the only way I could bear to be touched. The price I paid. A favor, you might say. I transported myself to another place or another time. When I stood next to Liam, though, I was frightfully aware of my body. Every curve, every strand of my hair. My lips dried, forcing me to lick them incessantly, and my hands sweated, making me want to wipe them on my jeans. Even in that moment, all the hairs on the back of my neck rose stick-straight, my senses aware of his hot gaze on my cheek as I stood there dumb, stricken. That’s what he couldn’t understand. It mattered. It mattered too much.

“Can I think about it?” I said in a small voice.

Liam inhaled a great gust of air, preparing a speech, but then his lips closed tight. “Yes, of course.” He blinked hard several times and then turned around, plumping up the pillows on the bed. “You are exhausted. You need sleep. Things will be clearer in the morning.”

“It’s never morning here,” I said in a faint voice.

He folded back the blanket and motioned for me to sink between the sheets. “Sleep now.”

I walked to the edge of the bed and sat beside him, meeting his intense gaze.

“I’m not tired,” I whispered.

Liam’s knuckle grazed my temple. “You’re lying.”

“Stop reading my mind.”

“I’m not,” he said softly. “I can feel you.”

The air crackled between us, and his breath was haggard, his pupils dilated. I leaned into it. The kiss. The world crystalized, everything focusing to a fine point, the details sharp and close. I closed my eyes, and his lips pressed to mine, and it was the sun. The morning. Pure light. Whatever scraping darkness pushed against my soul, Liam pushed it back with his mouth, with his hands in my hair. His name bloomed inside of me like one of those pale flowers in the garden, but it wasn’t need I felt. It was joy, the turn of a season like the turn of the earth. And I wanted it to grow. I wanted it so badly.
