Spotlight: A Christmas Miracle for the Doctor by Victoria James

Fall in love this holiday season with this heartwarming story about finding romance, the magic of Christmas, and the importance of family...

Children's bookstore owner Addie Mayberry believes in the magic of Christmas. Or at least, she used to. So when a young customer needs some seasonal optimism, Addie sets out to give the vulnerable, heartbroken little girl the best Christmas ever. Which means helping the hottest man in Shadow Creek, Bella's surgeon father, find his holiday spirit. Addie's up to the challenge, but between tree decorating and late night talks, she realizes she's starting to fall hard for the one man she definitely shouldn't.

Drew Barrett drastically changed his fast-paced life when he moved back to Shadow Creek, but it was all worth it to give his daughter a better life. He wasn't exactly winning dad-of-the-year awards before, so he's determined to make it up to Bella. And with Addie's help, he's slowly repairing his relationship with his daughter. The last thing he wants is to fall in love, since that road only leads to pain, but he can't stop thinking about Addie. Not only is she gorgeous, sweet, and great with Bella, she fills something in him he never knew was missing. But Addie wants forever, which is more than Drew can offer…

Excerpt

“Thank you for staying with Bella,” Drew said. His eyes were filled with tenderness and his mouth had curled up into a hint of a smile that was just enough that she could justify her curling her toes.

“We had a fun time. She’s a really great kid,” she said, trying not to cringe at how breathy her voice sounded. She sat up a little straighter, tucking the blanket around her. She needed to leave. Like, go home. Because right now her thoughts weren’t on babysitting, they were on him and the fact that the vibe had changed and she really wanted to say…I don’t know what to do with when you give me all your attention and look at me like…like you want me.

“Thank you. She really loves her time with you. You…you came through for her at a time she really needed a woman in her life to show her affection. I won’t be able to make that up to you,” he said, his gaze dipping to her mouth.

“She makes it easy. I should probably get going,” she said, standing abruptly.

He stood beside her. “Sure. Of course. Are you okay?”

She looked up into his eyes. “I am, but I have to work tomorrow and it’s crazy early so I’m thinking I might as well use that time to prep some of the activities and sales I have coming up in the next few weeks.”

He took a step back. “Of course. I really didn’t mean to take up your time.”

She waved a hand and walked backwards, almost falling over the end table. He reached out to steady the lamp. “I’m fine. Did it stop snowing?” she asked, even though she could see perfectly well that it had.

“Yeah, the side roads haven’t been plowed so be careful,” he said, taking her coat off the rack and helping her into it. Oh boy, the gesture, coming from him was chivalrous and made her feel cared for. “I cleaned the snow off your car, so you should be good.”

“Thank you.”

“Addie…I…”

She turned around and looked up at him, knowing he was going to say he couldn’t have a woman in his life, but not wanting to hear him say it. “Sometimes I think…I think you’re a really nice man who needs to concentrate on rebuilding his life with his daughter,” her voice came out sounding breathy and for some ridiculous reason she kept looking from his eyes to his mouth.

He took a step closer to her and her heart pattered faster than what should be a healthy tempo. “What do you think the other times?”

She swallowed hard and looked him directly in his forest green eyes. “I think you should tell me what you think first.”

“All right. I think I came back home to get away from women and the kind of life I’d been living for the last ten years. I came back to try and fix my relationship with Bella and to give her a childhood closer to the one I’d had. I came back, determined to stay single. But then Bella ran into your store and the minute I saw you, I knew I was in trouble.”

He was maybe an inch or two from her now, surely close enough to see that she was on the very of hyperventilating. His voice had dipped low and seemed to scrape against all her nerve endings and stir that part of her that had been dormant forever. “But I can’t go back, Addie. I can’t trust someone with my daughter again. I can’t have another woman walk out on her.” He backed up a step, his strong jaw clenching and unclenched, regret stamped across his handsome face.

Addie forced a bright smile, one she’d perfected over the years for moments just like this. This one just stung the most.

I've always been a creative individual. Writing is just a facet of that creativity...

My careers in public relations in and around the entertainment industry, photography, editing,  artist management, modeling and special event planning all elevated my passion for writing, not to mention gave me a treasure trove for story lines.

I write women's fiction; contemporary romance (as Jamie Salisbury) and historical romance (as JR Salisbury) which is ever evolving. I am fortunate enough that writing (and marketing of said product(s)) is my full-time job, although I always have one or two other projects going at the same time.

I now live in a suburb of Atlanta. Some of my other interests include photography, equestrianism, reading, and of course, travel.

I sincerely hope my writing will entertain, enlighten, and inspire others to pick up the pen and pursue their own dreams. I love to be contacted by readers, writers, and history buffs.

EXCERPT:

He shook his head. “You’re an idiot.”

I pushed his arm off my thighs. “You’re an ass.”

“Yep,” he said with a nod. I pressed my lips together to keep from smiling at the pride he found in his flawed personality. Wrapping his arms around his bent knees, he stared at me, like he was gathering information for his next move. I held my ground—no smiling—though barely. After a long minute, he finally said, “You’re cold.”

I glanced down at my hands, which were a pale shade of violet and reflexively quivering against each other to get warm. My body flinched when Jake took them between his, pressing them together and then making a hollow between his palms. He brought our hands to his lips and exhaled softly into the space between his thumbs, creating a small cave of warmth for my fingers. I swallowed past my suddenly dry throat at the cozy shivers racing up my arms.

Jake’s dark eyes raised to mine, making me suddenly aware of the terror that was probably plain on my face. Parted lips, wide eyes, and my breath that had halted some time ago. Why was he touching me? What did he want from me?

Why did I feel good when he touched me?

It wasn’t supposed to feel good, right? I shouldn’t like the feel of his skin on mine. Men only touched to hurt. I shouldn’t want that.

But when he said, “You might be warmer if we sat together,” I nodded and stood, moving so he could take my chair, so I could curl up in his lap.

Huddling my arms against my chest, I rested my head on his shoulder. My eyes shut cautiously so I could take in the scent of his skin. He wrapped his coat over my back before relaxing his cheek into my hair. I kept my eyes closed, half from fear, half from the desperate need to feel what it was like to just be held.

I had felt nothing like it before.

Author Bio:

Laney Wylde is enamored with all things southern California--the traffic, smog, surprise earthquakes, and nonindigenous palm trees. Consequently, it's the landscape her strong and sometimes lovable female leads paint their stories on. Her New Adult novels Never Touched and the After Twelve series are bright with provocative themes, steamy romance, and inappropriately timed humor.
When Laney isn't writing, she's singing Taylor Swift with her little boy or asking her husband not to tell her about his work as a surgical resident while she's eating. She daydreams about using her math degree to get into law school, then realizes that would be too much work and that she should just play pretend court on paper instead. While she loves a good book, nothing beats 30 Rock with a bag of popcorn and M&Ms.

(False Memory, #1)
Publication date: November 15th 2018
Genres: Adult, Romance, Suspense

It all started with the bereavement flowers with my name on them.

Not the best way to wake up, right? I work in a flower shop. I know a funeral arrangement when I see one.

I know a killer when I see one, too. And one is standing in my hospital room right now, straight behind the man who saved my life.

I can’t tell anyone the truth, because that’s the fastest way to really die. So I do the next best thing. I “lose” my memory.

I fake my amnesia.

Pretending not to remember a brutal attempted murder has its perks. The killer is backing down, spending less time around me, loosening the noose.

The less I claim to recall, the more my rescuer, Duff, works to help me “remember.” I hate lying to him.

But he doesn’t understand that my memory is dangerous. To me. And to him.

Fooling everyone isn’t easy. It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done.

Except it’s starting to look like I’ve been fooling myself.

In more ways than one.

After a breathtaking journey through Iceland, Vanessa Evanston finishes her dream vacation with her two best friends in the capital city of Reykjavik—and wakes up the next morning on the ground, on a tiny island 250 kilometers north, with no memory of how she got there.

Luckily, handsome and kind-hearted local Gunnar Heimirsson stumbles upon her—unluckily, he can’t explain her mysterious journey either. Nor can anyone explain why Vanessa soon discovers “last night” actually happened a year ago, and everyone thinks she’s dead.

Iceland is known for its folklore, but beyond the elves and mountain trolls, there are other creatures: beautiful, powerful, and vengeful, known as the huldufólk. Gunnar has been alive for a century, trapped by their curse after angering them. From the far flung Westfjords to the black sands of Reynisfjara, the answer to Vanessa’s missing year might be connected to Gunnar’s punishment—as well as his long-lost wife, Hera—but the truth lies somewhere in the realm of magic, myth, and love, and Vanessa has only just discovered fairy tales are real.

Excerpt

Her paranoia intensified, until she could no longer stay put. She felt like a child, quivering in the dark, wanting to run to her parents’ room. Truth be told, she’d give anything to run to her parents’ room right now. Thinking about that made her want to cry, on top of feeling alone and frightened.

She got up from the couch, grabbed her pillow and a blanket, and padded down the darkened hallway. She knew the door for the bathroom. The others were open, except for one. Hugging the pillow and blanket, still feeling like a little kid, she timidly knocked.

She heard movement inside the room. The door inched open and Gunnar peeked out. “What’s wrong?”

“I know this sounds dumb,” she said, her voice trembling and tears burning her eyes, “but I’m really, really scared right now. I don’t want to be alone.” A tear streaked down her cheek. “Can I stay with you? I’ll curl up in a corner or something.”

He opened the door fully, and the worry in his eyes faded. “It’s not dumb at all.”

She was momentarily distracted from her distress as Gunnar was shirtless, and his clothes were cruel for covering him up prior to this. His chest was broad, his shoulders wide and the rest of him beautifully toned. Combined with his tight, flat stomach—which she’d seen already—he looked like a damn fitness model. He wore sweat pants as well, which hung low on his hips.

She struggled not to stare. His hair was a mess and he looked soft and huggable. Or rather, climbable.

“Come in.” He stepped back so she could enter the room. “I won’t make you sleep in a corner.”

She walked in. The room smelled like him, like her t-shirt: a manly, musky scent with a touch of his fruity cologne. It was small and contained a double bed with a tall wooden headboard, a vanity-dresser combo, and a TV, next to a closet with a folding door. Across from the bed were two windows, the curtains open. The view looked out on the hills behind the house. She wondered if he left the curtains open to keep watch.

“Um.” He brushed against her as he stepped around her. “I’ll sleep on the floor, you can have the bed.” He started dragging pillows off.

She hesitated. It was his bed, and she had no right to run him out of it just because she was a scaredy-cat. “It’s big enough for both of us, I don’t mind.” She wiped her eyes. “If you don’t mind.”

He paused in removing the pillows. His eyes gleamed in the dim light. “Are you sure?”

She nodded and walked around to the other side, still clutching her blanket and pillow. “You’re a gentleman, aren’t you?” She managed a smile. “And I think I’ll be more likely to get some sleep if someone is close by. Especially someone who knows about … them. And how to fend them off.”

He tossed the pillows back on the bed. “I wouldn’t be in this situation if I knew how to fend them off.” There was humor in his voice, but it was dark.

She crawled into bed. “Just let me pretend.”

The mattress was soft, and she wrapped herself up in her blanket—not because she worried he would touch her, but because she felt safer in a cocoon. He crawled in beside her and slipped under the blanket that was on the bed. There was enough room they had a few feet of space between them.

She wondered if he’d chosen a big bed so he had room for female visitors. One couldn’t live a hundred years without some fun.

“Try to rest,” he murmured. “Don’t worry, they’ve never entered this house before.”

The faint blue light traced the sharp lines of his face, his hair soft against the pillow, eyes glittering. The bed smelled even more like him and it both comforted and distracted her.

“In any case…” He rolled his head so he was staring at the ceiling. “I think she made it perfectly clear she has no more words for us. They won’t try to make contact again. We won’t see them.”

She glanced at the windows, looking out on the murky twilight. Rain spattered the glass.

“Is that why you have the curtains open?” She snuggled down in her blanket.

He didn’t respond.
