Spotlight: The Royal Bodyguard by Lindsay Emory

When Princess Caroline of Drieden of the Royal House Laurent eloped with a race car driver, she forfeited her royal title and her family.

Now a widow and exiled from Drieden, Caroline is working as a journalist, writing exposes under a pen name. When, one day, she catches sight of her sister Thea's ex-fiancé, she's stunned - Christian is supposed to be dead. Here could be the scoop of the century.

But Caroline's plans to uncover Christian's deception are foiled by the arrival of Hugh Konnor - her former bodyguard and Caroline's first - unrequited - love. When Hugh stubbornly refuses to leave her side, Caroline can't deny they make a good team.

As they unravel a web of deception that could bring down the House of Laurent, Caroline must decide how far she's willing to go to protect a family she feels deserted her - and whether the man who swore to guard her body can safely hold her heart.

“Hello, Mother.”

She hadn’t aged a day in the last fifteen years, thanks to the best surgeons and dermatologists in the world. Her blonde curls framed her face in an artfully youthful way, her clothes were feminine and sporty. My mother, Felice, the Duchess of Montaget, everyone.

She lit up. But she always lit up. “Indefatigably perky,” a news reporter once called her. “Caroline! My angel!” She reached for me, pulled me into her thin embrace. “My doll, just look at you.” Her fingers smushed my cheeks. “You’ve gained … no. Lost weight. No.” She cocked her head. “Have you stayed the same? After all the soap opera of the past year?” She tutted. “To stay in such control, in the face of heartache and drama! Oh, don’t tell me, are you your father’s daughter after all?” Her laugh tinkled through the air like the chinking of champagne flutes. The idea clearly seemed ridiculous, that I might exhibit characteristics of my paternal DNA, rather than my maternal genes.

“How are you, Mother?” I asked, partially to distract her, partially because I truly wanted to know. We hadn’t seen each other since Thea’s aborted wedding weekend and we all knew how insane that had been, trying to put the right faces on in the middle of a royal crisis.

Felice rolled her eyes. “Wonderful, naturally. Everything is simply divine. I was at the Beyoncé concert in The Hague last week.”

“You were?” I asked politely, even though of course she was.

Her fingers brushed my arm. “Backstage with old Tommy. You know what fun that can be.”

I had no idea who old Tommy was.

“And then the afterparty.” Her tinkling laugh again. “You’ll never guess who we ran into.”

“Beyoncé?” I asked.

“No.”

“Elton John?”

“My God, no. Caroline, do be serious. Why on earth would I tell you a story about Sir Elton in the Hague?”

Right. Silly, silly me. “Who did you run into?” I asked patiently.

“Henry!” She half screamed with delight. “Didn’t you know?” I shook my head. I hadn’t spoken to my twin brother since my elopement, either. He had offered to fly to Monaco and walk me down the aisle. I declined because I hadn’t wanted him to also incur the wrath of our Queen. One of us was enough.

Felice continued, “Oh my, I had never felt so old. My own son, at the Beyoncé afterparty, with a pretty little thing on his arm. A barely dressed American actress, I believe, but is there any other kind? I swear, they’re crossing the Atlantic in droves, all of them, hunting for a prince to marry. He looked dashing, of course, my sweet boy, and no one could believe I was his mother.” She lifted a self-conscious hand to her right cheek, as if testing its youthful elasticity.

“And now here we are,” she said as she grabbed my hands again. “Both shacked up in the Ilysium, royal outcasts like us. Two single, gorgeous women who know a thing or two, wouldn’t you say?”

Spotlight: Wrapped Up In Christmas by Janice Lynn

A gift of warmth to heal two hearts…

Sarah Smith in Pine Hill, Kentucky has had her heart broken in the past. She pours herself into her work at church and into special projects—like making a quilt for a wounded warrior.

Bodie Lewis is lost. All he’s ever wanted was his career as an Army Ranger, but he was injured in an explosion that killed his brothers in arms. In the hospital, he receives a handmade quilt. Later, he sets out on his final mission: to find and thank its maker.

Bodie expected Sarah to be an elderly lady, not a lovely young woman. When she mistakes him for a handyman, he doesn’t immediately set her straight. Instead, he sets about repairing the home she’s turning into a bed and breakfast. Sarah’s presence and the spirit of the small town bring Bodie something he thought he’d left far behind on the battlefield: hope.

This heartwarming sweet romance includes a free quilt pattern from the Quilts of Valor Foundation and a new original Hallmark recipe for Cinnamon Swirl Bread.

Excerpt

After months of sweat, grit, and sheer determination to get to the picturesque Kentucky town he’d only recently heard of, Bodie Lewis had finally arrived in Pine Hill.
He turned off his pickup’s engine, ruffled his dog Harry’s scruffy black and white fur and let out a long breath. Put him on a dangerous overseas mission, and he was in his element. Searching out a little elderly lady in the civilian world to express his gratitude? Not so much.

“We made it,” he told the dog who had been at his side nonstop for the past few months.

A dog and a quilt. Not exactly things he’d expected to call his own, nor to have made such an impact on his life.

If he added the just-purchased truck he was sitting in and a rarely touched bank account, he’d be listing all his worldly possessions. Until recently, he hadn’t been in one place long enough to justify his own transportation and had always driven government- issued vehicles when the need arose.

He ran his hand over his dark hair. Although an average length by most standards, the strands felt out of place. He’d worn a crew cut most of his adult life—a cut he was no longer required to maintain, thanks to his honorable discharge.

The “honorable” was enough to gut him.

There had been nothing honorable about the demise of the rest of his unit.

Pain shot across Bodie’s chest. Pain of grief and emotion so raw he longed to scream. His ever-present anger, threatening to boil over into rage, constantly simmered at the loss of his brothers-in-arms, and at the loss of his career.

All he’d ever wanted was to be a soldier. To serve and protect his country.

So much for dreams.

He glanced around the town square. Mom-and-pop storefronts provided a fresh facelift for old brick buildings. That’s what he had to do—give his old dreams a fresh makeover. Surely his upcoming job with iSecure would fill that driving need inside him, wouldn’t it? His need to do more? To be more?

He had been more, and now...

His gaze shifted to a flag that whipped in the November wind atop a pole in front of the stately brick courthouse. The material stretched and stood at attention within the wind’s invisible fingers, saluting him.

Bodie nodded his head in silent acknowledgement of that flag and all it represented.

Of what he’d been willing to give to defend that flag.

In acknowledgement of what many had given.

Feeling the pain tighten his chest again, he sucked in a deep breath and stopped his mind from going where it went too often. Wasn’t that what the therapist the military had required he work with told him? To refocus when his mind wandered into dark places?

Fine. He concentrated on the reason he was here in Pine Hill: to find the elderly woman who’d affected his life with her kindness.

His task shouldn’t be too difficult for someone used to tracking down terrorists. Pine Hill, Kentucky, wasn’t exactly the mecca of booming civilization.

Even though he’d never stepped foot in the town, he’d pictured it so clearly. Sarah’s description was burned in his mind, offering him a safe space to escape when memories overpowered him. So, seeing his safe haven come to life brought him an unexpected sense of belonging. Apple-pie America at its best.

And a far cry from his childhood home in Houston, where he was headed after this slight detour.

Not that there was much of a home in Texas. Just his mom, stepfather, and a couple of much-older stepsisters he’d never been close to.

He wouldn’t be there long. The moment he got the go-ahead to start his new job, he’d provide top-notch protection to the rich and famous around the globe. Not the life he craved, but staying in the same place for very long made his feet itch. Always had.

Which was why he’d turned down the Army’s offer of a desk job. A desk job? For him? Never.

He glanced toward the quilt in the passenger seat. He’d be starting his next journey as soon as he’d had the chance to thank Sarah Smith for pulling him out of a dark, dark place.

He’d never heard of Quilts of Valor prior to being presented with the special gift. But that red, white, and blue quilt had given him something to hang on to— literally and figuratively—while he was recuperating.

Which was why he was in Pine Hill, to thank the quilt’s maker in person.

He owed her more than a simple thank-you could convey, but that’s what he’d come to give.

A thank-you, and then he’d be on his way.

A deadly storm, a missing three-year-old child, a suspicious death, and the eerie presence of the spirits of the dead set the stage for the second mesmerizing installment of Loretta Marion's paranormal suspense series.

A powerful storm descends upon Cape Cod's Whale Rock at the peak of tourist season--and the weekend Cassandra Mitchell's and Daniel Benjamin's wedding is set to take place at The Bluffs, the magnificent Victorian mansion Cassie inherited from her family. In the wake of the storm's destruction, three-year-old Lucas Kleister goes missing--and the body of small-time drug dealer Lee Chambers is found in a restaurant dumpster. Now, the WRPD are faced with a murder to solve, a missing child to find, and the aftermath of one of the worst storms in recent memory.

While aiding with the clean-up and helping the displaced, Cassie has been receiving cryptic messages from the spirits of her great-grandparents, Percy and Celeste Mitchell, the original residents of The Bluffs. At first, the messages are benign, but soon, they begin to point to something more sinister. As Cassie works to decipher their meaning, the specter of a mysterious local legend surfaces. The tale of Barnacle Boy--and what happened to him during another destructive storm decades earlier--will weave through the desperate search to find Lucas and the identity of a killer.

"Modern and historic mysteries collide in Marion's bittersweet storytelling."
—Kirkus Reviews

“[A] gripping sequel...Marion seamlessly weaves the multiple story threads together. Fans of tales of regional intrigue will be satisfied.”

Excerpt

On the short walk to my car, a sparkle caught my eye on the ground near a temporary dumpster behind La Table, the new location of my old flame Billy Hughes’s catering business.

Later, I reflected on how different things would have been had I not been so curious.

What if I hadn’t had the dress fitting today? What if I hadn’t parked in Archie’s space? What if I hadn’t gone out the back door of his shop? What if I hadn’t gone over to examine what was glittering next to the dumpster?

“The what ifs and should haves will eat your brain.” It was a quote of John O’Callaghan’s, from his book of poetry entitled, Sincerely, John the Ghost—ironically, a gift from Zoe, who’d always eschewed the notion of Percy’s and Celeste’s spirits.

The point is, if I hadn’t done all those things, then I wouldn’t have seen that glint on the ground and gone over to check out what it was. Most crucially, I would never have noticed a hand through the rusted-out hole in the dumpster.

A very dead hand.

Excerpt

As I get out of the car, her eyes flick to the lit up house down the street once again. “You supposed to be at that party?” I ask, already knowing the answer.

“Yeah, it’s an ugly Christmas sweater party. Hence the…” She points to the bow and I smirk. Makes sense.

“So do you actually have on an ugly sweater under that or…” I motion to her coat. Her lips quirk and for a moment I wonder what those lips would look like around my cock. I shake the thought from my head and concentrate on the woman in front of me, who is unbuttoning her coat. My cock stirs at the thought of what’s under that fabric, but the moment the sweater comes into focus I can’t help the laugh that escapes.

“I’m glad you find it amusing,” she mutters, still holding her coat open. It’s hideous, but I think she knows that. “But wait…it gets better.” She presses a button on the front of the sweater and all of a sudden, it lights up and starts singing. My laughter gets louder the longer it goes on.

“Why on earth would a gorgeous girl like you wear something that hideous?” Her eyes widen and the corners of my lips turn up. Her cheeks flush and I swear it’s the sexiest thing I’ve seen in months…maybe even years. I can see the hesitation in her eyes as they dart back to the house once again, and I wonder what’s within those walls that has her questioning herself.

Spotlight: It's In His Christmas Wish by Shelly Alexander

Return to Red River--a beautiful mountain town in the southern Rockies, where the nights are cool and the romance is hot--one last time in this wonderful holiday romance that has as much heart as it does heat.

Maybe some wishes aren’t meant to come true.

Christmas is a hot button for Kimberly Perez, and not in a good way. Having grown up in the foster system, she's as frugal as she is smart and can't abide the materialism of the holidays. In an effort to use precious funds to help children in need instead of wasting money on meaningless commercialism, she pitches a new city ordinance to Red River's town council that would cut all holiday decorations and festivities from the budget.

Ross Armstrong is determined to honor his late sister’s memory by continuing her love of all things Christmas in Red River. But to do so, he's got to block the passing of a silly new law—and the person behind it—which would essentially ban Christmas altogether.

When their disagreement pits them against each other at a public town council meeting and splits Red River in half, the council chairperson forces them to work together on a new Red River holiday tradition—the Wishing Tree. Can they work together in the true spirit of the holidays, not only to reunite the town they love but to also cultivate the burgeoning feelings they have for each other. Or will their differences turn them into enemies and divide Red River forever?

A SPECIAL NOTE TO SHELLY'S READERS

Hello, my lovelies. As this--my first published series--comes to a close, I'm both excited to start new books set in a different location and sad that the wonderfully quirky characters who make up the heart of Red River will no longer be my focus when I sit down to write every day. Thank you for following this series from start to finish. It's been a fantastic journey, and just like the characters in the books, there has been ups and there has been downs. But you all have stayed with me every step of the way, and for that I am eternally grateful. So, enjoy Ross and Kimberly's heartwarming holiday story.
