Excerpt

Her black pencil skirt hugged her curvy hips and I could tell her ass was just as plump and delicious as it had always been. Although her blouse was loose, I knew those perky breasts were in there somewhere. I wanted to go searching through the snowy white material until I freed them from the gauzy fabric. Samantha’s body was perfect, and I wasn’t the only one who thought so. I could see my case manager ogling her behind as she walked away from him. Although he was a big guy, I was bigger and undoubtedly meaner. I shot him a look, unleashing a fierce scowl at the bastard. And he shrugged, as if to explain that what he was doing was the normal guy thing to do. It might be normal to appreciate a fine woman, but this was no ordinary woman. This was my Sammy. Or at least, she had been.

I looked back to her face, panic bubbling in my chest at the thought: She’s here, but is she mine?

“Good to see you again,” she said, sticking her hand out as if she expected me to shake it.

I crossed my arms and glared down at her. She was a tall woman, and those exquisite heels—which she had tripped over when entering the room—made her even taller, but I could still look down my nose at her. “Is that how you greet an old friend?”

“We were never friends. You were my older brother’s friend, and because of that, I am not sure I am the right doctor for this case. There is a conflict of interest seeing as we have a history—”

“I think our history is exactly why it needs to be you,” I cut in.

I raised an eyebrow in challenge. If the court-appointed babysitter was not present, I might have kissed her then. The plan had been to take it slow and assess the situation, but now that I was back in her presence, all I could think about was picking right back up where we had left off. My dick loved that idea. Clearly my body would get the better of me if I was not careful. The moment she had tripped through that door—always one to make an entrance—the damn piece of wood had become rock hard and was threatening to break the seam of my pants. I was hoping she hadn’t noticed.

“You need a neutral party to do this properly. I am afraid I can’t be neutral.”

“Look, Sammy-Girl—”

She cut me off, suddenly in a well contained rage. There was a flash behind her eyes; those long fingers flew into the air to wave about. I saw that she was about to unleash a volley of emotions on me, but at the last second, she swallowed hard and her splayed fingers found her hips. With that professional demeanor back, the only tell she exhibited was her slightly raised voice and her sharp tone. Her words were laced with venom, something she probably didn’t display with most of her clients. “This is a professional mental health facility in a state of the art hospital, Mr. Peterson. You will address me as Dr. Bowers.”

“Okay, Dr. Sammy.” I chuckled to myself as her eyes grew wide and her nostrils flared.

EXCERPT:

Staring at his face, I noticed a faint, silvery scar underneath his right eye, as small as my thumbnail. I reached out with my free hand, tracing my fingertip along his skin. A featherlight touch, barely there. “What happened here?”

His gaze never left mine. “Baseball cleat. Fourth grade. One of my teammates threw it at me.”

“Some little league kid threw their shoe at you? Why?”

“I told him that he couldn’t bat very well.” Walsh shrugged. “He couldn’t take the truth.”

I snorted. “You were that kid? The dream crusher?”

“Well, someone had to be.” His small smile was unapologetic. “Ask me who the kid was.”

I looked at him for a moment before tipping my head. “No way. Scott?”

“Who else would be that aggressive as a fourth-grader?”

Dina pulled at my arm as I laughed, shaking my head at the thought of miniature Scott throwing a shoe at small Walsh. I stepped out from the tangle of leashes at our feet, glancing down. “Oh, your poor rich-boy shoes.”

“What?” Walsh looked at his feet. “Oh.”

Brown smeared the side of his expensive-looking shoe, probably coating along the bottom. “With dogs around, you should probably watch where you’re walking.”

Walsh let go of my hand to switch the leash and proceeded to try and smear the offensive substance onto the grass. “Now you tell me.”

“Should we clean the poop off your shoe together? Is that romantic?”

His response was dry. “Ha-ha.”

“What? Shouldn’t we get a photo and caption it, ‘This might’ve been an accident, but falling in love wasn’t’?”

“Watch it, or I’ll wipe it on your ankle.”

I jerked back just in case he tried it, nearly tripping over Dina’s wealth of leash.

EXCERPT:

ODETTE

“I’m not getting married, especially for money.”

“Odette, we need the money,” she reminded me. “You especially. Over the last year, you’ve tried to manage with just the money you were making off your music. How is that working out? How much do you have left?”

I looked away. “It’s not my fault, and you are not helping, Miss I-need-a-personal-driver. I’m perfectly fine selling off—”

“You’d rather sell off everything your father gave you than get married and get the money he wants you to have? We have bills and debts we need to pay.” When she put it like that, it sounded bad.

“You make it sound so easy! Like I’m just supposed to pick some random guy and get married to them for a year. Who would I even marry?”

“I found someone,” she whispered sheepishly.

What? “You found someone?” I repeated in disbelief. “What did you do? Go to a grocery store of eligible bachelors or something?”

“No, of course not. But if a place like that existed, it would be helpful.”

I shook my head and ate. “I’m not taking you seriously. You. Dad. Nope. I refuse to be made crazy today.”

“Odette, hear me out.”

“No need. I get it now. You knew about the second will, and you had some trust-fund brat waiting in the wings. That’s why you weren’t angry. Got it. Not happening,” I told her comfortably, already reaching for the remote control.

“Winter is coming early this year. Grab your—”

She grabbed the remote, turning it right back off. “He’s not a trust-fund brat, per se.”

“Don’t care, not interested,” I replied, taking the control back and flipping to the movies. “Do you want to watch The Notebook or If Beale Street Could Talk?

“Fine, if you don’t want to be the princess of Ersovia, I can’t force you.” She huffed.

“The what of where?” I stared at her, my mouth agape, and of course, she was only pretending to be uninterested as she ate.

But the smug grin on her face couldn’t help but break out as she whipped back to me. A smile broke out widely across her face. “Anyone can get a trust-fund brat. Your mother, however, got you a prince.” She grinned, shaking with excitement.

EXCERPT:

Geoffrey was always telling me I possessed enough talent to earn a living photographing people. While art was my life, my photography was just a hobby. The pieces that surrounded me at the gallery—that was real art. Working for him and Andrew at Mountain Time Art was my dream come true. Any images I might have been able to capture through my lens was just good for the soul.

It wasn’t unusual for me to lose time in my work. Without even realizing it, I whiled away the entirety of the afternoon editing photos. My apartment was quiet, save the click of my mouse as I sharpened and cleaned up images. It was peaceful. A loud knock on my door jarred me from my solitude, and it was then that I became cognizant of the time.

I eyed the small plate beside me, sprinkled with the crumbs of a muffin long forgotten, and a pang of hunger hit me. It was like the world stood still for a while, and a single knock brought me back to reality. I was pushing myself up onto my feet when another round of rapping sounded against my door. This time, the announcement was followed by his voice.

“Freckles, it’s me.”

The sound of him made me quicken my pace. I twisted my locks free and swung open the door without hesitation. “Hey, you.” I gave him a quick once over in an effort to get a sense of his state of being.

It was unlike Geoffrey to look anything other than stylishly disheveled. He was quite handsome, in a very aryan manner. He had a head full of blond hair, which he wore in such a way that was messy but sexy at the same time. He also took exceptionally good care of his body. I called him my Viking, because he was built like one. Except, in that moment, he just looked broken, dressed in a pair of old sweats—his blue eyes sad and red-rimmed.

“What are you doing here?” I asked him, not unkindly.

“Last night, he was a fuck face,” Geoffrey mumbled. “Today—well, he’s still a prick, but he’s my prick. And he’s gone. But—I can still smell him in the bed, and see him in the shower, and hear him in the kitchen and I just…”

His words trailed off, but I didn’t need him to say any more. I reached for the paper sack in his grasp, then took his hand in mine as I pulled him inside.

“What’d you bring me?”

“A pint of coffee ice cream. The vanilla’s for me.”

As I shut and locked us in, he made his way to the couch. I trailed after him and peeked into the bag. A quiet chuckle tickled my throat when I spotted The Notebook, Crazy, Stupid Love, and Blue Valentine keeping company with our ice cream.

“Babe, you know you don’t like these movies, right? Are we just ogling Ryan Gosling tonight?”

He shrugged when I looked over at him, and that was all the answer I needed.

“Okay. Well, we should probably order in,” I informed him as I headed for the kitchen. “We’ll get sick if all we eat tonight is ice cream.”

“Pizza’s on its way. Double pepperoni.”

I stopped and peered back at him from over my shoulder. He wasn’t looking at me, his attention zeroed in on his lap, but I didn’t need to see into the windows of his soul to know how badly he was hurting. And yet, in spite of his pain, he had brought my favorite ice cream and ordered my favorite pizza.

He was right. Reeve was a fuck face, with no idea who he’d thrown away.
