Britney was not impressed when I told her that Martin missed me.
“I missed you too when you were sick. That doesn’t mean I like you more than a friend,” she said.
I smiled, “I’m happy you’re my friend.”
“Stop being dorky, I didn’t mean it,” Britney scolded.
I gave her my puppy dog eyes. She sighed, “fine, I’m happy you’re my friend too.”
She left soon after that. I sat around and waited for Nick to come.“Sorry. I had to stay and help a coworker,” he said. I stared at him.“What’s the matter?” he asked.“It’s like you’re a grownup,” I said.He scoffed, “if anything, I’m only pretending to be.”“But soon you won’t have time for swimming because your boss will want you to work all the time and then you’ll stay working late with Miss Scarlet and then one thing will lead to another and you’ll be married with two kids living in the suburbs and I will never get to see you again,” I complained.“Weirdo, stop making up crazy scenarios in your head. There isn’t even a Miss Scarlet at my work and all the female workers are old, married or extroverts. Now focus on your swimming and stop creating stories about me,” he yelled.He made had me do drills to work on my kicks. While I rested he would get his laps in. Watching him swim was a treat. “You’ve improved a lot,” Nick commented.“Yeah, I’m no longer flailing about,” I joked.“You did almost look like a fish,” he teased. “I would rather look like my favorite sea animal, an octopus,” I told him, “but our bodies aren’t made for such beautiful movement.” “Why do you like them so much?” Nick asked.“Because they are plump yet, they are so beautiful in their movement and although they don’t look it, they can swim really well.” Talking about octopi always gets me excited.“I see,” he seemed amused. “I know, I know I’m weird,” I grumbled. “You are a weirdo but it’s pretty cool,” he said, “but now time to practice, I’m freezing just standing here.”
