Excerpt

I was getting antsy. It took all my self-control to keep myself from bouncing my leg while I hung out with Webs to play some Call of Duty. Renee was coming today, and she assured me she was ready to announce our love affair.

I was worried that she might not get onto the airplane and bail instead. I kept checking my phone to see if she’d said she was on the way or sent any update at all.

Webs elbowed me. "Dude. Quit looking at your phone. I need you to protect my flank."

"Well, it's not my fault that your girl keeps sniping. If I didn't know better, I’d say there's trouble in paradise." It was weird that Lily was also playing with us but was sitting upstairs rather than with us. Whatever floated their boats, I guess.

"If you’re going to be such shit company, I would rather be hanging out with Lil."

Shit, there was trouble in paradise. Maybe this wasn't the best time for a prank, but it was too late to tell Renee that we needed to hold off. "What's the deal?"

"She got word that Riker's coming back and she's going to be sent down to Hamilton in the next week."

Their whole love story was pretty epic. They fell for each other when she was an emergency backup goalie and earned a spot on our team while Riker went through alcohol rehab treatment. I hoped that they would get the whole season together, but her having to leave just sucked.

"Sorry, man."

"It'll be okay. We've been lucky to have her on the team. Who else gets to hang out with their girlfriend so much?" That was Webs—looking on the positive side of things. But no wonder he was giving me some shit for being bad company if he wasn’t going to see her for a bit. I was surprised he was spending the afternoon with me.

The doorbell rang. I tried to pretend I didn't have any idea of what was going on, but that had to be Renee. Webs paused the game and answered the door.

If it was possible, she looked even more beautiful than she did in late January. Her hair was looking lush, long, and wavy. While her green eyes were similar to her brother’s, hers always seemed to pop, especially when her dark hair was down. I was instantly hard thanks to her beauty.

Too bad this prank was the closest thing I would get to having her as a girlfriend. Then again, the next few days would really show how much of a dead man I would be if I did touch her.

The moment she spotted me on the sofa, she looked pissed. She came my way and slapped me right across the face.

I was in utter shock and just sat there blinking. "What did I do?" We’d agreed we would ad lib the announcement, but ow! Did I have to get slapped?

She shouted, "You got me pregnant, you asshole."

In unison, both Webs and I asked, "What?"

Then Webs turned towards me, and he looked pissed. Not that I blamed him, but I had supposedly broken the bro-code. "Did you sleep with my sister?"

"Um . . . Maybe . . ." Then I got hit for the second time in the span of minutes. That one I was expecting.

There was no way sleeping with your best friend's sister was ever going to be a free pass. That didn't mean it hadn’t hurt my jaw. Especially since he got me in the exact spot as Renee did. I rubbed it in the vain hope it would stop the stinging.

Both of the Webers were screaming at the same time. He yelled, "Get the hell out of my house, Shoresy. I don't want to kill you," while Renee screamed, "Don’t you dare kill him, Colton!"

Too bad she’s engaged to the wrong Samuelson.

Excerpt

“You feel it too,” he said. She had to acknowledge this thing between them.

“Yes,” her voice was still breathless, husky. She didn’t sound happy. “But Chester…”

His conscience pricked him. But desire beat the crap out of that part of his personality. “This has nothing to do with my father. This is between you and me. We’re both adults, Cora. You can’t tell me my dad makes you breathe hard or gets your heart racing like this.”

The couple in the other car had wandered over toward the picnic benches and were setting up a telescope, completely ignoring them.

He placed his hand over her heart, reassured that it beat as fiercely as his. When she gasped, he took her lips again in a passionate kiss. His fingers found a way under the fabric of her dress to tease and caress the tight bud of her nipple. She pressed herself against his hand, silently urging him on.

Why the hell had he taken her to a public place and not somewhere he could divest her of the beautiful dress and feast on the even more gorgeous flesh beneath it? His hand moved from her breast to wiggle under the slit in the side of the garment. He caressed her inner thigh and she parted her legs.

Before he could explore further, more headlights deluged them in light. She pushed against his chest and retreated against the door panel. Her chest heaved and her lips were wide open as she sucked in air like a drowning woman.

He switched on the car’s ignition, then pressed the button to put the top up. An audience was not required.

“No more. It’s not right,” she managed to say after a minute. Her hand shook as she readjusted the top of her dress.

He reached for her hand and placed it against his heart so that she could feel the rapid beating beneath her palm. “This is what you do to me, Cora. And not just now, when we’ve kissed. When you walk in the room, when you smile at me, when you laugh. I want you all the time. I can’t stand back and let you marry my dad.”

The guilt in her eyes probably mirrored his own. “Your father and I—”

“Tell him you changed your mind. He’ll understand. I’ll be there when you tell him you can’t marry him. Cora, you can’t marry him. You can’t…not when we have this between us.” He reached for her again, but she held up her hands.

“What do we have, Beckett? Passion? Lust? It doesn’t last. Soon you’ll tire of me. Then what will I do? Do you think your father’s offer will still stand if I sleep with his son? I’ll have nothing. Again. I’m tired of nothing. I can’t start over any more. This is a no-win situation for me.”

Was that all it was between them? Passion? Lust? He couldn’t imagine tiring of her. He wanted to learn everything about her, discover her favorite foods and what made her laugh. Touch her and hold her and be with her until…

Until what? His father offered her permanency. Was he willing to do the same? Was he ready to hand her the power to potentially destroy him?

Was his intense need to protect her just chivalry? Or was it a sign of something more, something scarier? And the damned warmth that flooded through him whenever she was near—was that also just a symptom of a physical attraction? He’d never felt it before. He had no frame of reference for an accurate diagnosis.

Beckett’s eyes lingered on Cora sleeping beside him. She’d tried to keep awake on the drive back. But the late night making the spring rolls and the fresh air from the lake, not to mention running after the boys most of the day, had her eyes drifting closed before they’d reached the Lougheed Highway. Not that he minded—it had allowed him to enjoy her beauty unnoticed.

He had an insane desire to fly her around the world for real and not on an old beach blanket pretending to be a magic carpet. He wanted to show her the world’s splendor—see its diversity through her eyes.

Dammit. He was getting too involved. Two more weeks and he’d be back in Dubai. That’s what he needed to focus on. The next project, the next advancement in his career. Not fanciful notions of jetting around the world with his father’s nurse.

He shut the car off and reached over to caress her cheek until she awoke, her eyelids fluttering open until all she saw was him.

“Cora, we’re”—Home was what he was about to say. But were they really? For her, home was a little village high in the Cordillera mountains in the Philippines. For him, it was… Was it Dubai? Did he really want to return there as much as Cora longed to go to the Philippines? Did he even belong anywhere?—“we’re back.”

She blinked, then her eyes locked on his. “Oh, I’m so sorry I fell asleep.” Her voice was husky and nearly his undoing. Insanity beckoned. As did her lips.

Just one taste. How good could it be? He’d kiss her once, get it out of his system, and move on. He leaned another fraction of an inch closer, giving her time and space to move away if she wanted. Instead, she crossed the tiny gap between them and placed her lips against his.

This was how addiction started. Curiosity, tinged maybe with a little desperation, making a person do something they knew wasn’t smart. He lifted his lips to check her reaction. Her eyes were dazed, a light flush tinted her cheeks a fraction darker. He went back for a second hit, just to make sure the first taste had been as good as he’d imagined. Their lips touched again, moved a little this time. Her tongue darted into his mouth, then retreated, a deliberate provocation. He invaded hers. The kiss turned carnal, unrestrained. She moaned his name. Before his mind completely snapped, he pulled back, retreating to his side of the car.

He didn’t dare kiss her a third time. If he did, he knew it would be over. He’d be enthralled. Trapped. Addicted.

He bailed from the car while he still could.

Before he could delve deeper, his father pushed his plate away. “I’m done,” Chester said. “And I think I’ll forgo the chess game tonight, Cora. I’m tired. Why don’t you play with Beckett instead?”

Cora’s eyes widened as if his father had just asked her to hold a rattlesnake. “I should do some studying,” she said.

“Are you sure?” Beckett asked. “’Because I think I’d enjoy a lightsaber battle in the backyard.”

“Ha!” A wicked gleam entered her eyes as she pushed back her chair. Gone was the sweet nurse who held her patient’s hand throughout the meal. Gone was the polite dinner guest inquiring about his work. Before him now stood a woman who took no prisoners. This fiery side of her intrigued him. He’d admired the way she’d stood up to him in the office earlier. “If we were to play chess, Mr. Samuelson, I wouldn’t need to cheat to beat you.”

As she strode from the room, the napkin that had been clinging to her dress fluttered to the floor.

“I see what you mean about her tossing down a gauntlet,” Beckett said to his dad.

Chester chuckled. “Welcome to the club, son.”

Beck wasn’t sure exactly what being a member of this club entailed, but he was sure as hell looking forward to finding out.

Corazon Dela Cruz was becoming more interesting by the minute.

Excerpt

CHAPTER ONE

Mason, Kansas May 1972

Adam is back.

Vera Exton couldn’t get that thought out of her head. The man she had always loved, the man who held the keys to her future, was finally home.

She was on the front porch of her family home. As always, she was surrounded by newspapers and magazines. She paid to have the New York Times sent to her. That it arrived three days late didn’t matter. At least she got to see what was going on in the world. The world. Not just Kansas, not just the US, but everywhere.

In college, she’d majored in political science, with a minor in geography. She knew where the Republic of Vanuatu was, where Rajasthan, India, was. She could tell Bhutan from Nepal by a single photo. She’d studied languages on her own and knew a smattering of several. Rhodesia, she thought. Madagascar. She’d send her sister photos of herself with a lemur when she got there. Kelly would like that.

Vera closed her eyes, leaning back in the old chair that her mother had bought at a craft fair. It had been made by someone local, using local materials. That was the difference between them. Her mother and her sister prided themselves on “local,” while Vera could only see the world.

“And now it’s all going to begin,” she whispered, and opened her eyes.

Bending, she began stacking the newspapers and magazines. Her mother complained about the mess that always surrounded Vera. “We can hardly walk through a room,” her mother often said, frowning. Since her husband died two years ago, Nella Exton did little but frown.

If Kelly was around, she helped Vera clean up. Or helped Vera do anything, for Kelly was deeply glad her big sister was there and doing what everyone expected her to do.

When Kelly mentioned her gratitude, their mother just sniffed. “She’s the eldest child, so of course she takes care of things.” Even though the sisters were only ten months apart, to their mother Vera was to take on the family’s responsibilities, so she was doing what she was supposed to do. There was no other choice.

But Kelly didn’t feel that way. In what people tended to call “the drug culture,” many kids ran away, never to be seen again. The idea of “family obligations” was becoming obsolete. But not to Vera.

She had postponed the future she’d dreamed of, had studied for, to give her sister what she wanted and Kelly was ever thankful, grateful and appreciative.

For all her sister’s appreciation, right now all Vera could think of was that Adam’s return meant the ordeal of staying at home was over.

He’d arrived just in time for his father’s funeral, as there’d been delays on the long flight from Africa. Vera had searched the newspapers to find out what was going on in Kenya. During the years he’d been away, Adam’s letters were full of stories of floods and bridges collapsing, infestations and diseases with exotic names. His letters had made her heart pound with excitement. She’d read them to her mother and sister, then was shocked by the horror on their faces. “But doesn’t it sound wonderful?” Vera would ask.

Nella said a flat no, and Kelly would say, “If you like that sort of thing.” Then she’d pick up a few of her animals and feed them or groom them or whatever she did with them.

Vera had seen Adam after the service, but she’d not spoken to him. He was surrounded by people offering condolences. His father, Burke Hatten, had been a big shot in the county. “Ask Burke” was a common catchphrase.

In Vera’s opinion, the man thought he knew much more than he did, which is why he and his eldest son had always butted heads. Burke’s temper and his son’s matching one was why Adam had run off to join the Peace Corps.

Well, that and Vera’s endless talk of how she was joining the second she finished college. She’d begged Adam to go with her, but he’d always said no. He said he’d be waiting for her in Kansas when she grew tired of moving about the world and came home.

Funny how things work out, she thought as she stacked the papers. Adam had the big fight with his dad and had run off to the Peace Corps. Vera had planned to join him, but her father had died suddenly, leaving no one to care for the farm. To Vera, the solution was to sell the farm, but Nella had refused to leave the place. In just a few weeks, everything changed. Vera had agreed to stay behind until Kelly finished veterinary school. The new plan was that as soon as Kelly graduated, Vera would join Adam wherever the Peace Corps had sent him.

Now everything was going to change again. Burke Hatten’s horse threw him and he’d died instantly, so Adam had returned. But this time when he left the country to go back to his job in Africa, Vera wouldn’t be kissing him goodbye. They’d leave together. The goodbyes would be to her mother and sister, to the farm, to her job at the travel agency. Goodbye to the town of Mason. The world she’d been reading about was out there and calling to her.

At last, she was going to answer its call.

Exclusive Excerpt

She slammed into someone, and looked up to see none other than Dr. Ian Finnegan, his horn-rimmed glasses knocked off-kilter by their collision. “Gotta go. Medical emergency.”

“Oh no, I’m fine,” Ian said quickly. One hand held a clipboard, the other settled on her shoulder. “Are you okay?”

“Yes, it’s just…” She drew in a breath. He looked good. Damn good. He also looked worried about her. He wasn’t even fixing his glasses because he was tending to her first.

She reached up to adjust his glasses for him, but he was in the midst of transferring his clipboard from one hand to the other, and managed to bonk her on the head at the same moment she pushed his glasses. “Ow,” she said as her hand jerked. The unfortunate timing meant that instead of putting his glasses to rights, she knocked them all the way off his face.

“Crap,” she exclaimed. “I’m so sorry!”

He dove to grab for them, but they landed on the floor with an audible clunk. How heavy were those glasses? His clipboard went next, slithering from his grip as he focused on the glasses. It too clattered onto the floor.

“Let me help,” she began, but he held up a hand to stop her.

“Please, there’s no need.”

She took a step back, feeling foolish. A sound came from her phone. Damn. She’d never ended the call with Toni. Wincing, she brought her phone to her ear.

Toni was laughing so hard she could hardly get a word out. “What did I just hear?” she gasped. “Was that the handsome Dr. Finnegan?”

“You shouldn’t eavesdrop. I’m hanging up now.”

“I know there’s something going on between you.”

“I told you already what’s going on.”

“Yeah well, you didn’t tell the whole story. What I just heard was a throwback to teenage Chrissie, the one who always lost her cool around a boy she liked.”

“Hanging up now.”

“You can hang up, but you can’t hide.”

She hung up and shoved her phone into the pocket of her flight suit. Ian finally had his glasses back in the proper place, and his clipboard under his arm, and was putting himself to rights.

“I’m really sorry about that, Ian. Chaotic Chrissie strikes again. Are your glasses okay?”

“They’re fine. You?”

“I’m fine. Embarrassed, but fine. I was on my way to get a hot chocolate, can I make it up to you with a hot beverage that I promise not to spill on you?”

“I’m on my way to a consult, but maybe later?”

“I only have another,” she checked her watch, “ten minutes.” She stepped aside to allow him to pass. “I don’t want to hold you up any more than I already have.”

“No, it’s…you didn’t…I’m glad I…” The words seemed to bunch in his mouth, and he shook his head in frustration. “I’ve been hoping I’d…you’d…”

She saw in a flash that he was affected by her presence. Stammering like a teenager.

A sense of joy seized her—and freedom, as if bright wings were lifting her out of gravity. Without a second of forethought, she rose onto her tiptoes and kissed Ian on the mouth. His lips were warm and firm and fresh.

For a micro-moment, it seemed he wasn’t going to respond. Too surprised? Unwilling? Uninterested? Various scenarios flashed through her brain, then evaporated as he returned her kiss—and then some.

Ian might be awkward in some areas, but when it came to kissing he didn’t hesitate. He kissed her as if nothing else existed, as if there were no nurses hurrying past, no hospital walls around them. They could be floating above the roof, alone in their own private helicopter, for all the notice he took of the snickering orderly pushing a gurney past them.
