If you could go back in time and change one thing, what would you change and why? by Gina Lamm

Hi! Thanks so much for having me here today! KISS THE EARL’s release has been something I’ve been looking forward to for a very long time, and I’m so pleased to be able to share it with all of you! J

The topic for today is this. If I could go back in time and change one thing, what would it be, and why?

That’s a tricky question. Could it mean changing history in the larger sense? Or maybe just my personal timeline? Stopping myself from making a huge mistake would be great, obviously. Who hasn’t wished for that every second day for their entire lives? But then again, could I effect a change that would make the world a better place?

As far as my personal history goes, I don’t know that I’d go back to change things if I could. No, I’ve DEFINITELY done things that I regret bitterly. But, if I hadn’t gone through those experiences, would I be the person I am today? Would I have still learned those lessons, learned to appreciate the things that I do? I don’t know. I’d be afraid of screwing up worse in a different way. That’s kind of the lesson of time travel, isn’t it? Lots of times people that go back in order to change things end up messing things up much worse in a different way. So as far as my personal history goes, no, I don’t think I’d mess with it. I love my life now. I’ve got a family I adore, the best husband in the world, and I’m getting to share my stories with all of you. PLUS, we’ve got twins on the way. I don’t want to lose any of that.

But for the world, that’s a much broader and trickier question. Honestly, I don’t know. If I could prevent tragedy, sorrow, hunger, disease? Of course I’d want to do it! But how to pick just one thing?

I don’t have the answers. I wish I did! And one day, when time travel is a reality, maybe we can answer these questions. But for now? I’m happy playing pretend. J

Thanks again for having me today, and I hope that you all enjoy KISS THE EARL!

                XOXO,

                Gina Lamm

5 Things You Didn't Know About author of Omari and the People

1.  I began writing Omari and the People right after I graduated from Chicago Theological Seminary.

2.  My fascination with the desert began when I used to play in the great sand dunes in Northwest Indiana. The great climb in the story was inspired in part by a climb up "Mount Baldy" in the Indiana Dunes State Park.

3.  I was beaten senseless by street gangsters after I spoke out about gang violence at a City Council meeting in Gary, Indiana. This incident is alluded to in an early scene of the novel.

4.  I played congas in the Indiana University Soul Review band. That might explain why I described the drumming in the story with such detail.

5.  Most of the guardsmen in the story were descriptions of fellow Marines of Second Battalion, Second Marines ("2/2").

About Omari and The People

In an ancient time, a people made homeless by a devastating fire are led across a treacherous desert by a thrill-seeking thief, to a land he doesn't believe exists - and he started the fire.

In a squalid ancient city on the edge of a desert (based on descriptions of the African Sahara’s Empty Quarter,) a weary, thrill-seeking thief named Omari sets his home on fire to start anew and cover his many crimes. When the entire city is unintentionally destroyed by the flames, the cornered thief tells the displaced people a lie about a better place to which only he can lead them, across the desert. With the help of an aged, mysterious woman who knows a better place actually does exist, they set out. The disparate people must come together to fight their way through bandits, storms, epidemics, and more. As a result of Omari's involvement with Saba, a fiercely independent woman who is out to break him in the pay of a merchant whom he has offended, his ability to lead - his very life - is jeopardized.

How I Get My Ideas For The Novels by Sue Duff

I tend to ask “why” and “what if” kinds of questions about the world around me. A sure sign of my curiosity! So when I went in search of a new type of superhero, I drew upon my love of earth and space sciences. At the time, it felt as if natural disasters were on the rise in frequency and intensity. I began to wonder why. My protagonist, Ian Black and the Weir, a magical race of beings, developed from there.

I loved the idea that a magical race had lived among humans for thousands of years. Stewards of the planet, they ensure that the surface of the planet is in harmony. But that felt typical and done before (and teetering in a soapbox kind-of-way), so I, quite literally, dug deeper. Earth’s surface is its own ecosystem, but the planet is made up of vast “innards.” There’s an entire, untapped world beneath the earth’s crust. Incredible mysteries exist under our feet! What if the Weir could control the energies generated by the planet itself? Magnetic fields, gravity, electrical forces, tectonic plate shifts? The list of possibilities erupted like a volcano!

Of course, any good storyteller knows that heroes, like humans, are flawed. Even magical beings need to have conflict or dramatic elements. My hero, Ian, didn’t inherit the Weirs powers as predicted and as a child, he turned to illusions to dabble in what he couldn’t do naturally. The Weir are dying out. In this modern time, it dawned on me that magical beings might turn to science to combat their eventual demise. The perfect blend of contemporary fantasy and science fiction adventure emerged!

I ended up with ecological undertones in the long run, but the conservation messages are eclipsed by a compelling, epic story driven by a cast of characters that will win the hearts, or villainous disdain, of many. The five book series races toward an ultimate battle to save Earth, and really the universe itself! But what shape will Earth be in when it is all said and the final chapter has ended? After all, it’s not wise to mess with Mother Nature.

About Sue Duff

Sue has been writing since high school but never became serious about it until a skiing accident laid her up for an entire summer and she turned on the word processor to combat the boredom. A couple years later, her first urban fantasy novel, Fade to Black, was a finalist in the RMFW Colorado Gold Writing Contest. By day, she’s a dedicated speech-language therapist in an inner city school district to pay the bills but her life as a writer is her true passion and the creative outlet keeps her sane.

Sue is a member of the Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers and The Pikes Peak Writers. Her creativity extends into her garden and the culinary arts. She is the second oldest of six girls with an avid reader mom and her dad, the family’s single drop of testosterone in a sea of estrogen. Fate thought it hilarious to give her a son but maternal instincts swing both ways and she didn’t break the little bugger. She lives in Colorado with her miniature dachshund, Snickers and hears from her son, Jonathan whenever he needs something.

About Masks and Mirrors

Ian Black’s commitment to safeguarding Earth has come at a price. His career as an illusionist is at a standstill and attending to the planet’s needs has distanced him from his best friend, his guardians, and the woman he loves. When presented with an opportunity to perform, Ian seizes the chance. But moments before he takes the stage, Ian encounters the mysterious Jaered and a rebel force fighting to protect Earth alongside the Weir.

Jaered is determined to stop a malevolent Weir from releasing a drug capable of wiping out the last vestiges of their race and plunging Earth into self-destruction. But when Jaered is willing to sacrifice an innocent child to obtain the drug for himself, Ian risks everything to uncover the secrets of the rebel forces and their true intentions for Earth’s survival.

Ten things that inspire me…by Alicia Rae

1.    My family—I’m very blessed to have a husband and family who truly support me unconditionally. That is the greatest inspiration any writer could ever ask for.

2.    My three boys—They continue to amaze me every day with their free-spirited imaginations and pure hearts.

3.    My readers—There is nothing sweeter than hearing that someone loved one of my novels. Each time, it makes me want to stop what I’m doing and go back to my writing cave.

4.    Love—Every girl dreams of falling in love and having her perfect happily ever after. I love to give that to my characters, and I hope to share their stories with others.

5.    Reading—There is nothing better than losing yourself in a story.  I fight the battle very often. Do I read or write? I’m very passionate about both.

6.    Authors—I have so many favorite books. I could never choose just ten. So many authors have made me cry, melt into a puddle, and laugh out loud, causing my husband to look at me as if I’ve lost my mind. Then, I’m usually left with a major book hangover. After reading an unthinkable amount of books in 2012, I give many thanks to all the authors who inspired me to write love stories of my own.

7.    Emotions—We all have them, and we try to control them, tame them, or let them flow. I have taken a leap of faith in the writing world as I poured my emotions into The Beautiful Series. I took a chance on myself when I wrote Beautiful Chances, My Beautiful, Beautiful Dreams, and now, Beautiful Ties.

8.    People—At heart, I am an observer. I love to watch people interact, smile, and laugh while they embrace a moment. Life is too short not to take a chance on your dreams.

9.    Music—I have always loved music. Since I started writing, my love for it has intensified. Now, I find certain songs unleashing scenes in my mind, forcing me to run and search for the closest thing—paper, napkin, or anything within my reach to write my ideas down on.

10.    Day-to-day living—You never know what is going to happen the next day or even the next moment in your life. I’ve learned to be thankful for each moment, every person, and every experience that I have.

Behind Escape From The Wilderness by Gary Rodriguez

The book Escape Through the Wilderness was birthed out of my passion to teach young emerging leaders principles related to life and leadership.

My unique background and credentials include a season in the U.S. Army where I was the youngest drill sergeant in the Army’s history at age 18 (Pentagon confirmed), a jungle expert (trained in the Panama Canal Zone), and recipient of the Silver Star (the nations third highest award for courage under fire).

Escape Through the Wilderness gave me a distinctive opportunity to write to today’s youth about leadership and teach key principles in the context of a wilderness survival adventure.

Our nation’s schools are filled with young aspiring leaders who have a keen interest in principles related to leadership. Unfortunately, a good deal of training on leadership is impractical, out of context, and, in their words, often boring.

My idea for Escape Through the Wilderness was to teach key leadership qualities and skills very subtly in the context of an entertaining and inspiring adventure story. My goal was to entertain, inform, and inspire young and young-at-heart readers while teaching them about life and leadership.

The Amazon reviews are almost all five-star to date and readers are responding well to not only my writing style, but to my message as well.

Based on the positive sales and reviews thus far, I’ve already started to write the sequel and hope it will be release in summer 2016 if not before.

Recently, I spoke at a book party with a large group of teens and pre-teens in attendance. Again, I was overwhelmed by their interest in the story and the principles taught in the context of a survival theme. I’m more convinced than ever that teaching leadership in an adventure based way is not only effective but entertaining as well.

Ultimately, my dream is that thousands of young readers are informed and inspired by Escape Through the Wilderness and go on to become productive and positive leaders and influencers in our communities nationwide.

Finally, Tate Publishing is my book publisher. I chose Tate based on the recommendation of a fellow author.

About Gary Rodriguez

My name is Gary Rodriguez, and I live in California. I'm the president of LeaderMetrix Inc., a consulting company that specializes in senior-level executive coaching, organizational development, and conflict resolution.
Previously, I worked for eighteen years in the radio business as an executive where I spent several years as one of the original managers of Infinity Broadcasting.

Following a successful radio career I became the president of a non-profit organization for a season.

As a young man, I spent a tour of duty in the U.S. Army where I was recognized as the youngest Drill Instructor in the Army's history at age 18 years. I was also awarded the Silver Star (the nation's third highest award for valor) while serving in a combat zone.

Over the past few years, I've written three non-fiction books and then I decided to write a novel.

My first book, Purpose-Centered Public Speaking, was published in 2009 and was re-published this summer (2014). Then I wrote a companion workbook designed to help people implement the principles taught in my first book. Next, I wrote Overcoming The Fear Of Public Speaking. And this past year, I wrote my first novel, Escape Through The Wilderness.

About Escape From The Wilderness

Sixteen-year-old Savannah Evans walks with a slight limp thanks to a gymnastics’ accident that dashed her Olympic dreams, but didn’t stop her from attending an adventure camp in Idaho. At Camp Arrowhead, she quickly befriends Jade Chang and Rico Cruz, but Conner Swift taunts Savi because of her injury.

When the four are teamed together for an overnight white-water river rafting adventure, Savi refuses to get in the same raft with Conner. Unfortunately, the director will not reassign her.

A fun expedition down the river turns into a nightmare when their raft slams into a huge rock and their adult guide disappears down the river.

Without their guide and desperately trying to steer an out-of-control raft, they pass the “last chance” marker and enter the larger rapids. With Jade pinned between the raft and a rock, and Rico clinging to a lifeline, Savi must cut the raft free.

When the four drag themselves out of the river, they’re bruised, beaten, lost, and twenty-five miles from camp. Because of late-night campfire tales of Vexel, a vicious animal that roams the nearby woods, Savi and the others are terrified.

Savi becomes the unlikely leader who tries to guide the group back to Camp Arrowhead. Limited supplies, injuries, and the constant threat of Vexel—who Savi fears is stalking them, complicate the harrowing return trip.

Readers will enjoy dramatic survival scenes and the group working together, solving problems, and learning to overcome adversity.

Why Book Covers Are Important by Donna M. Zadunajsky

They say not to judge a book by its cover, but to me, that’s the only way I’ll pick up a book. If the cover doesn’t attract my attention, then I won’t even give it a second thought. I’ll move on to the next book, until I find one that captures my sight, and makes me want to read the summary.

A great book cover will tell the story without flipping the book over and reading the summary. The cover can tell you if it’s a romance, mystery, horror, young adult, ect…
My recent novel Family Secrets, tells you someone could be dead by a lake, or even passed out. But I also think it gives you a feel for a good mystery.
