Review: The Gathering Table by Kathryn Springer

Winsome Lane, a street that any small town would love to have. Representing a community that embodies all the charm and love that you'd hope for in a town, is the beautiful setting for this lovely book, The Gathering Table.

We are introduced to a lovely town Winsome, WI. This is the type of place that you'd hope all small towns would be like. The people look out for each other. Everyone knows one another but most important, everyone supports and loves each other. This is something Jessica Keaton was not used to at all.

Jessica Keaton, just left what seemed to be the dream of a lifetime. She was working for someone who she thought was what she aspired to be. In her eyes, working for this dream client presented a life that she thought was the greatest thing that could've happened. Sadly when an unfortunate situation presented itself involving someone close to her boss, she found herself unemployed, shamed and uncertain of her future. In an attempt to pick up the pieces and put the past behind her, Jessica was presented with a job opportunity that unbeknownst to her would change her life in more ways than she would know.

Winsome Lake was just the place for Jessica to escape to. No one knew her or her former boss, so staying under the radar was just what she was looking for. However, in town like this, it's hard to hide. With her new boss, Elaine Haviland, to be currently in rehab for an accident, she is left alone to find her way around and get settled in. Little did she know she wouldn't be alone for too long. The scrappy ladies as they are known to be called, make sure to bring the sunshine and the welcome wagon. Just trying to make her feel welcome and support their friend Elaine, Jessica is smothered with love and support leaving her feeling unlike she'd ever felt before.

Then comes the unexpected, her neighbor Nick. Helping out with Elaine's garden, he is everything that you'd expect from a nice guy in a small town such as this. He's handsome, community oriented and loved by everyone. The problem is, Jessica is not having anything of this. She is here to do a job and as times goes on she finds herself getting interested in more than cooking. Will Nick's small town charm be the secret ingredient missing in Jessica's recipe?

Elaine Haviland, knows all to well the feelings of be shamed and an the uncertainty of her future. When Elaine set to advertise for someone to cook and help out around the house, little did she know that it would change her life as well. Upon having a medical setback, Elaine found herself temporarily in rehab. Not knowing what she would experience when she returned, while turning to her faith and the strength of friends, she knew she had nothing to worry about. As she doesn't believe in coincidences, Elaine's intuition upon meeting Jessica gave her the confirmation that people are brought into each other's lives for a reason and through their experiences they find an invaluable friendship that changes both their lives and those around them forever.

With the fall approaching, this is the perfect read to get snuggled up on the couch. One of the best parts of the book that I loved was the friendships and support of community. I love the generational gap friendships because there is such value and depth to what they bring into each other's lives that make you more invested in them. These were the type of characters that invite you in and the more you read the book you want to love them more. This journey through their lives leaves such a sweet, fulfilled experience. With beautiful characters that you will fall in love with blended with friendship, love, hope and second chances, The Gathering Table is one place where everyone would want to pull up a seat. I'd recommend adding this one to the reading list.

Review: I Am Beauty: Timeless Skincare and Beauty for Women 40 and Over by Riku Campo

First let me say thank you to Riku Campo. For the ladies out there who embrace this demographic, this is definitely a go to for everything for your skin. First thing that stands out is that beautiful, vibrant photo of these lovely ladies. I'm not really a fan of the color red but it works very well to bring out the beauty of these ladies.

Something that is so important is that beauty is not what is defined by magazines, television and alike. Real women walk past you everyday and is always such a subjective topic. As we have been programmed as a culture to find flaws in this demographic, I applaud books like this who highlight the perfections of timeless, elegant women whose beauty like fine wine has aged beautifully.

I Am Beauty by Riko Campo, is inspired by mother to embrace the women who we don't get to see too often if ever in the spotlight. These are the women that surround you and including yourself possibly. Through tutorials along with incorporation from his makeup expertise and relevant experts, we get wonderful tips on skincare, tools to use, makeup and other stylish how tips to bring out the best of you. The book also highlights a handful of women with conversations and makeovers that include tips and advice. This is such a wonderful book to have for the gals 40 and above.

I'd also like to mention the awesome photography of these women in the book. Samantha Rapp brings a story to each picture that makes you want to learn more about them. Not only are these women beautiful but it I hope inspires confidence for those who don't feel beautiful to show you are. I can't say enough as well as how awesome the makeup is on these women. I wish I could have Riku on speed dial.

Overall, this book is such a gem that gives you so much information and insight on skin care, maintenance and getting all dolled up. I definitely took notes, especially in the skin routines and makeup. I really enjoyed the breakdown and picked up some great tips on what to do and not. As with many books out there, inclusion was the biggest highlight for me here. All women no matter what shade were featured so you can see someone similar to you to relate to. If you are a gal 40 and over, this is a must have to add to your beauty collection.

Review: To Hate Adam Connor (Love & Hate #2) by Ella Maise

To Hate Adam Connor was a magically, entertaining read. I was glued to each page, soaking up every word.

After a terrible break up, Lucy moves in with her best friend and her best friend’s famous husband. The goal is to get her life back on track. Not stalk the Academy Award winning actor- Adam Connor next door. Unfortunately for her, stalking lands her in jail. And despite her hate growing every day for Adam, she can’t help but be drawn to him and his adorable son.

I really enjoyed To Hate Adam Connor. The banter between Lucy and Adam was off the chart. And there was never a dull moment. Surprisingly, there are a few twists in this book. It gets a little dark. And towards the end, it almost goes off the rails, but the author does a great job of steering it back on course.

The characters were incredible. I loved Lucy. She was hilarious and said whatever she wanted. She’s independent and witty. And I think she was my favorite protagonist I’ve read all year. Because of past experiences and her family history, she was so deadest on not falling for Adam Connor. Although so determined, obviously she fell for him hard. And it was an exciting journey to witness.

Adam is caring and such a romantic. He was the perfect match for Lucy, who wants to protect her heart. He is a recently divorced, single dad trying to make his son happy. And his relationship with his son was so loving, so caring, and so protective.

The romance in this book was lovely and great. Lucy and Adam have this love/hate relationship in the beginning. But it slowly becomes something else. The push-the pull, the teasing, etc. is all great.

But I also enjoyed the relationship the characters had with the supporting cast. Lucy and Adam’s son, Aiden, had such a cute relationship. I couldn’t help but smile while I read their scenes.

 I will admit and say I made a mistake. I should have read the first book in the series because Olive and Lucy’s friendship was top tier. Like friendship goals. I will definitely go back to read Olive’s book. Because I liked her in this book too and I liked her relationship with Jason.

Final Analysis

To Hate Adam Connor is witty, hilarious, and entertaining.

Review: Friends Like Us by Sarah Mackenzie

Friends Like Us is the second book in Sarah Mackenzie’s Cranberry Cove series. In this book, we dive primarily in the lives of Rene’s sister, Bree Rhodes and best friend, Jill Kelly. These two ladies embark on a new chapter in their lives where they follow their hearts down a road that leads them down to learn how to let go and embrace second chances.

After breathing a sign of relief that she doesn’t have cancer, Bree is inspired to carpe diem her life and set some goals to do things that you always wanted or never could. After taking on a bucket list inspired by this new lease on life, Bree find herself on a journey that fulfills her in more ways than one. Little did she know that life she never thought she’d have could be in grasp and a chance encounter leads her one step closer.

Life for her best friend Jill, hasn’t been to easy since the death of her husband. Going through the motions and living life for her friends, she hasn’t allowed herself to close the door so another could open. When a secret is revealed that brings her past to the surface, Jill finds herself struggling let go of the weight collides her past with the present. When an opportunity arises that makes her confront the dreams she once had, Jill strength is tested with decision to take her life in her owns hands and reclaim the life she is meant to have.

Even though this book in part of the series, this can be read as a standalone. I’d recommend reading the first book not only because it was really good but it gives you some background info that you can keep in mind. This book really captures the true definition of what a friendship should look like. I really loved how no matter what each were feeling, they were there for each other. They were different but complemented each other like puzzle pieces that fit perfectly. We get to know a little bit about their friend Essie, who was just so much fun to read. There are some budding romances that inspire some sweet moments that inspire the journey of these lovely ladies. I found this to be a wonderful addition to the series and hope to see the other ladies get a chance to have their happily ever after.

This is a quick but fulfilling read. I’d add this the list.

Review: I Hated You First by Rachel John

Sometimes love is war.

Clay... My best friend has held a grudge against his half-sister, Lauren, forever. It’s unjustified and ridiculous, but I have to take his side. Also ridiculous? How bad I have it for her.

My Lauren radar goes off the second she steps in the building. Did I mention we work together and her dad’s the boss? Yeah, she’s so off-limits I might as well start running now and never come back.

Except, her family is like family to me. So, I’ll do whatever it takes to stick around, even if she hates my guts.

Lauren... I date guys nothing like Clay on purpose. I will not let my old crush on him get the best of me. It’s going on the list of things I’ve outgrown and will deny ever having, like the Justin Bieber poster I used to keep on the back of my door.

It doesn’t matter that I’ve caught Clay looking at me like he’s a jewel thief and I’m a precious gem encased in glass. He’d never choose me over my brother, or his job, or his enjoyment in teasing me.

Avoiding Clay is easy, until the day I realize my dad’s asked for Clay’s help in checking up on my dates.

No stinking way. ­-

I Hate You First was a workplace, enemies-to-lover story. And I thought it was fine.

One thing I really enjoyed was the family dynamic of the book. Lauren and her Parker had a really complicated relationship. And it was interesting to see them interact throughout the book. But due to that dynamic between them- Clary, Parker’s best friend, can’t really express his feelings towards Lauren in the beginning.

The romance between Lauren and Clay was sweet. They had an understanding of each other, and it was clear that they had known each other for a while. The attraction and banter are noted. And despite me, finding this to be an okay book, it’s hard not to deny their chemistry.

I think the main issue I had with this book is that it felt more like a short story. After reading it, I found myself wanting more of everything. And I thought that everything just scratched the surface. There’s not too much conflict and everything felt so steady throughout the book. And there wasn’t really any real character development.

Final Thoughts

I Hate You First had a sweet and cute romance but other than that the story itself felt lackluster and offered no real character development.

The book highlights information and practical tips on places to stay, adventures, features from fellow influential travelers, top destinations to see, booking planning, money concerns, accommodations, lodging and getting around locally. The book is broken down by topical features as well as a resource chapter that embraces many of the concerns you might be thinking of with everything regarding preparation and planning.

Overall, anything collaborated with National Geographic is always going to be a go to and I will recommend purely based on it. The only things that I wish was more of a personal touch. In the end, I got a glimpse of who there were and how they began their journey. I would've love to read personal commentary pertaining to some of the destinations. That would've made it more personal rather than your straightforward practical tips and information. We do get small tips from them but I would've loved it to be a blended experience. If you love traveling like me, than you will appreciate the beauty and resources that this book offers. So, for your next trip with your significant other or even a friend, check this out for some great ideas and information.
