Spotlight: A Perfect Caress by Nana Prah

About the Book

From the very first touch…

The moment suave businessman Dante Sanderson brushes hands with Lanelle Murphy, he can't get her out of his head. The guarded beauty resists all of his polished attempts at seduction. To soften the pain in her past, she's dedicated her life and family fortune to helping others, not chasing sexy millionaires like Dante.

Something about Lanelle makes Dante want to open his heart like never before. He knows their encounters are destiny. Lanelle is sure their sparks mean another heartache is in the making. Yet her cherished new project—a state-of-the-art neonatal unit—brings them together. From charity ball dances to strolls in Milan, desire pushes her…right into his arms. But will Lanelle be able to seize this sweet second chance at love?

Excerpt

Without warning, Dante invaded her space and tilted her into a dip. Gripping the shoulders of his tuxedo, she scowled into his smiling face as the blood rushed to her head. Before she could chastise him, he brought her upright.

She hated surprises. Being out of control ranked number one on her never-to-do list. Dante threatened all of that. From the few stories Vanessa had told her about him, they were as different as a waltz and a tango. “Talk.”

Should she be feeling the deep rumble of his laughter against her chest? When had he pulled her so close? She tried to create space between them. His hand splayed at her back made it impossible.

“Do you ever loosen up?”

She snapped her head up. Even though she was wearing stilettos, he loomed over her. “You’ve met me, what? All of twice? You have no idea who I am.”

He leaned in close, his breath tickling her ear as he whispered, “But I’d like to.”

All thoughts of why she’d come on the dance floor escaped as he pressed his cheek against hers. For once in her life Lanelle lost herself in the gentle sway of a man’s embrace.

Spotlight: Sweet Southern Bad Boy by Michele Summers

About the Book

HE’S GOT SOMETHING SHE WANTS

When Katie McKnight gets lost location-scouting for her father’s TV studio, she stumbles upon the perfect setting for their angsty new teen vampire series—a remote barn house unfortunately occupied by a grouchy, disheveled, and incredibly sexy man who instantly mistakes her for the new nanny. Should Katie tell him the truth, or get her foot in the door?

SHE’S GOT EVERYTHING HE NEEDS

Bestselling author Vance Kerner doesn’t just have writer’s block—he’s been run ragged ever since he was saddled with taking care of his brother’s three kids, an adopted kitten, and a runaway mutt. The last thing he needs is a teen drama defiling his property, but with fascinating and unconventional Katie underfoot charming the entire Kerner household, Vance is finding it harder and harder to say no.

Excerpt

Katie settled on the porch swing next to Vance Kerner, New York Times best-selling author. Yes, she knew who he was and what he wrote…thriller stories about war. But she didn’t feel compelled to fuel his already egoistical head with any more compliments.

He kept finding ways to make contact like when his fingers brushed hers as he reached for the wine glass. Katie knew his game. She’d been around enough slick Hollywood types to know when someone was pulling a fast one. And Vance Kerner was a slick as a whistle.

“Cheers. To crazy days and lazy nights.” Vance clicked his glass against hers.

Katie sipped her wine. The smells of spring hugged the air. Different from California. Here the earthy pungency mixed with honeysuckle, and spring blossoms created a sweet aroma in the simple darkness.

“Better?” Vance’s voice mimicked the calm surroundings. But she knew better than to be lulled into a false sense of complacency. His sexy voice be damned. This was

war.

“I’ll be better when you agree to let me use your house.” She met his gaze, catching him off guard.

The Prince of Darkness heaved a huge sigh and leaned back, rocking the swing. “Okay. Lay it on me.”

“Don’t sound so excited. I wouldn’t want you to burst anything.”

“Now there’s a phrase. Just what exactly are you referring to my bursting, oh, Kat of mine?”

Katie bristled. His familiarity and sly smile unsettled her. “Don’t call me Kat and I’m certainly not yours.” Her voice sounded prim and starchy to her own ears. Vance’s sly smile grew wider. She gulped her wine for courage. Now or never, Katie McKnight. Make your dad proud.

“Your house and property are the perfect location for my dad’s new miniseries. As soon as you give your permission, I can FedEx the contracts back to California and the crews can get started on transforming the place.”

Vance took a long, slow sip of his wine, never breaking eye contact. Katie was no mind reader, but she sensed his dark, narrowed look didn’t bode well. “And this is the show about teenage vampires on a killing spree?” His silky smooth voice got even silkier.

“Sorta. It’s about this teenage girl named Alexis who discovers she has unusual powers and she’s being chased by the Zombies of Squirrel Hollow”—she gestured to the front yard—“your lawn would make the perfect Squirrel Hollow.” Vance continued to study her as she spoke, giving nothing away. “Uh, we would need access to the house and grounds to create their spooky world.” Katie glanced at the dark oaks lining the driveway. “They might have to cut down a tree or two because we need room for trailers, but they’ll replant as soon as they’re done filming.” She pointed to the closed front door with the bunny knocker. “And we’ll have to paint the door blood red and change the knocker…things like that, but again, all that will be fixed when we finish.”

For a solid minute, Vance didn’t move a muscle. Katie began to fidget, waiting for his reaction. The longer he took, the more nervous she became.

Finally, he placed his empty wine glass down. “Aw, fuck no.”

Okay, not exactly what she wanted to hear. “That’s just a quick overview. The rest is spelled out in the contract along with how much you’ll be paid for leasing your property.” Vance pushed his long fingers through his thick, wild hair. “Um, it’s really a lot of money. McKnight Studios pays well on location,” she said, hoping to sweeten the pot and remove the appalled look from his chiseled features.

“You’ve got to be kidding me. No freakin’ way anyone is cutting down one-hundred-year-old oak trees on my property.” His voice was gruff and irritated.

Obviously a deal breaker. “Well, there’s certainly room for negotiations. Why don’t you have your attorney look it over and you can discuss it with the McKnight’s team.” Katie was scrambling for ways to make this deal appeal to Vance.

“Kat, you appear to be a nice, sweet girl and I’d love to do this for you because, well, you’ve been great and the kids seem to love you, but holy shit…I can’t wrap my head around a team of movie makers tromping all over my grounds, cutting down trees and painting my door blood red.”

Katie jumped up from the swing and paced the length of the porch. “I’m sure if you specify no trees are to be touched, they won’t touch them.” She really had no idea. She was grasping at straws.

Vance rose slowly as if his back ached. “Look, Katie, here’s the thing. I’ve got four weeks to finish three quarters of my next manuscripts to meet my deadline or my agent, not to mention, my editor are going to rip me a new one. And I’ve got three monkeys posing as kids sleeping upstairs who will be awake”—he glanced at his black watch—“in less than nine hours, which means my day will careen straight to hell from there. Just like every day for the last five weeks. In other words, the creek’s rising and I’m up to my ass in alligators. I don’t have time to babysit kids and a movie crew at the same time.”

“What will it take for you to agree?” Katie blurted without thinking.

Sparks shone in Vance’s inky dark eyes and he shoved his fisted hands in his jean pockets. “Aw, Kat. You don’t want to know what it will take. And quite frankly, once I started, I’m not sure I’d be able to stop…with you,” he rumbled low.

Not the Same Season, a Christmas Novella

Two broken hearts embarked on a holiday season in a way they never had before. Divorced.

Mitch had been badly burned by love, but was willing to take a chance . . . with the right woman.

Hannah had lived everyday with the grief love had brought her and followed her everywhere.

Can two hearts find love and heal each other during the most difficult season of the year?

Excerpt

Mitch raced down the stairs after Hannah, both fully dressed at that point. He caught her around the waist as she made it to the first floor. They laughed in each other’s arms as he peppered kisses all over her face and neck.

A knock at the front door interrupted their moment of bliss. Mitch pulled her along, his arm securely around her waist. She couldn’t contain her giddiness as he opened the door until she caught a glimpse of the shocked face on the other side.

“Trina?” Mitch let out a high-pitched squeal. He coughed to clear the imaginary squeak box from his throat. “What are you doing here?”

Hannah took it as her moment to pay Mitch back for his performance with Jack the night before and wrapped both her arms around his waist.

“I...” Trina sputtered. “The painting. I just wanted to make sure you didn’t forget to have it delivered.”

“It was wrapped and picked up yesterday. It is supposed to be at your place by three this afternoon.” He pulled Hannah in front of him, his arms wrapped just under her breast, his chin resting on her shoulder. “Oh, you know Hannah, right?”

“Yes.” Trina looked her over to notice the wet hair pulled up in a tight bun and her wrinkled dress. It was more than obvious that she had spent the night. “I didn’t know you knew each other and aren’t you married?” she said with such disgust.

“Ken introduced us after Jack and I filed for divorce. We just spent last night celebrating.” Hannah turned her head just enough to kiss his cheek.

“And this morning.” He kissed her neck not feeling a bit sorry about shoving it in Trina’s face.

A sharp, loud honk brought them out of their reverie.

“My cab,” Hannah pouted. She really didn’t want to say goodbye in front of Trina, but she knew she had to catch her train on time. She grabbed her purse and coat from the chair next to the door. Mitch helped her slip the coat on before taking her in his arms.

“Text me when you get home?”  He tightened his arms around her and gave her a soft, sensual kiss.

“I will.” She reluctantly made her way down the front steps and into the cab, back to her life without Mitch in it.

“What the fuck was that?” Trina literally spat as she huffed and stamped her foot.

Mitch was taken aback at his ex-wife’s anger. “My girlfriend. Why the hell do you care? I don’t tell you who you can and can’t fuck.”

“But it’s Hannah Stone.”

Mitch shook his head and raised his brow. “So?”

“I replaced her at Schmidt and Klein.” She looked at him like he had done something incredibly crazy.

“And?” He crossed his arms in front of his chest.

“That’s not strange that your girlfriend used to be my boss?”

He shook his head with a short snort. “No. I didn’t know she was your boss until after we got together.” If he counted their dinner as when they got together, it was the truth.

“Aren’t you stepping backward? I thought you were supposed to go for someone younger and hotter than your ex. She’s two years older than I am!”

Mitch was more than a little confused at her anger but entertained all the same. “So what? She’s thirty-one. I could care less. She’s definitely hotter and much better in bed.”

She gasped in utter shock and held her hand to her chest.

“And in the shower.” He wiggled his eyebrows to irritate her even further.

“Mitch! This is so wrong on so many levels.” She crossed her arms tightly under her breasts.

“I could give a shit how this looks for you. Neither she nor I call this city home anymore. We don’t give a fuck what you or anyone else thinks. After today, I’m sure you can see she’s here to stay.” His chest huffed at the exertion from his rant.

“Well, maybe she’ll get a few more million out of your bank account.”

“Of course.” It dawned on him. “You’re worried that you’re not going to get your money.”

“Well...” She primped her hair. “That woman is capable of many things. It wouldn’t surprise me.”

“Get out!” He pointed to the door.

“Fine!” She turned on her heel and opened the door then closed it behind her with all the strength her tiny body could muster.

“Ding dong. The witch is gone!” He screamed at the top of his lungs, the echo reverberating throughout the entire brownstone.

Holiday Cure for the Cursed, a Christmas Novella

Daniel Digby is cursed by his good looks. After years of sexual harassment, he’s convinced wearing a wedding ring is the answer to fending off unwanted attention.

CiCi Newport is cursed by her family’s money. When men look her way, all they see are dollar signs. After two years, her “no dating” rule is still in place.

After a chance meeting, they’re entwined for the holidays. What starts as attraction might just be the holiday cure they’re looking for.

Excerpt

CiCi was nervous. She wasn’t sure her dark, skinny jeans and chocolate-colored sweater with her knee high brown boots was her best casual outfit. After changing three times, she’d ended up wearing the outfit she had on in the first place. In all of her twenty-seven years, she could not remember putting so much effort into her appearance to attract a specific man.

The front door of Villanova’s opened, and she realized it was too late to worry any longer.

He had entered the building.

The elusive He noticed her right away and held up a finger, signaling he would get a drink and be right over. She continued to take deep breaths until he came over to join her. He took off his coat and made himself comfortable in the chair across from her.

“No rushing off today?”

“No.” He sipped his drink and sighed. “I don’t have any meetings until mid-morning, so I have a little extra time. What about you? No portfolio today?”

“No. I had a meeting yesterday, but the project is basically finished, so I have a couple weeks off.” She took a long, luxurious sip from her own cup.

He smiled and nodded. “With all this free time on your hands, I suppose having coffee with strange men is out of the question?”

The introduction she had been dreading. As soon as he heard her last name, either the dollar signs would glow in his eyes, or he would run away from the lady who wrote children’s books for a living. Maybe it was time to try something different.

“I’m CiCi. And you are?”

His Adam’s apple bounced when he swallowed. “Daniel.” “Okay, Daniel. Now we’re not strangers.”

He smiled. “CiCi. Not strangers now. Might I be so bold as to ask what you might be doing with all this free time?”

“Besides meeting you for peppermint mochas?” she asked with a mischievous twinkle in her eye.

“Well, that’s a given at this point,” he said with a dimpled grin.

“Maybe see a show. There is an exhibit at the Natural History Museum I wanted to check out.” He raised an eyebrow at her answer. “Or I’ve heard about this roller derby tournament this weekend. Maybe do a little Christmas shopping. Oh, and I’ve been invited to a club opening. I might drop by.”

“Roller derby sounds promising.” He laughed before taking another sip.

CiCi’s heart fluttered, and her stomach flipped at the melodious sound. She knew it was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Spotlight: Can't Stop Loving You by Miranda Liasson

Message from the Author

I think all of us dream of mending fences or of having a do-over for something in our lives. For me, this is part of the experience of reading romance, to see a version of life that’s maybe a bit more courageous than our own, that might inspire us, or give us courage, or just plain give us hope.

CAN’T STOP LOVING YOU is a second-chance love story about two star-crossed lovers separated by a tragedy when they were teenagers. It’s about love, loss, friendship, family, and the journey of one woman to confront her past in order to move onto her future.

Arabella D’Angelo worked hard to escape her past and move on—not an easy feat in her small town—until one day it returns in the form of her 6’2” darkly handsome, enigmatic first love, Roman Spikonos, who is settling back into town to take over his grandfather’s orchards, right next to her traditional Italian family’s garden center.

Arabella fell in love hook line and sinker with Roman Spikonos in high school. Their love was explosive, wonderful, and all-consuming…until she found herself pregnant, causing her to leave her Catholic high school and give up her scholarship to the out-of-state she’d dreamed of attending. Yes, she was that girl in high school. Just like that, all her dreams fell apart. The life she’d imagined was nothing near the life she was suddenly forced to live.

And because of the anger of her traditional Italian father, she had to make an awful, heartbreaking choice that cost her everything. And then she had to somehow find the strength to move forward with her life.

My heroine undergoes a tremendous amount of growth as she is forced to confront and face feelings that she swept under the rug for years, not only with Roman but also with her very supportive friend Ethan, and last but not least, her own father.

CAN’T STOP LOVING YOU is a romance, and is told from both the hero and heroine’s points of view, but I consider it first and foremost Bella’s story.

I hope the end result is an emotional, raw but hopeful read and a beautiful love story that took a very bumpy path to come full circle.

About the Book

When it comes to her heart, Arabella D’Angelo has moved on—even though she still lives in Mirror Lake, Connecticut, a little tourist town with a long memory for mistakes. Ever the dutiful daughter of a cantankerous widower who holds grudges, Bella has spent the past twelve years raising her younger brother and making a name for herself as a successful psychologist. Now, when she isn’t counseling a lonely-hearts club for senior women, she’s humoring her matchmaking girlfriends. Bella resists the romancing of their blind dates, yet her friends hope she’ll fall for a local and scrap plans for a fresh start in Chicago.

Then, just before Bella’s thirtieth birthday, her first love, Roman Spikonos, returns to Mirror Lake. When he moves next door to her family’s garden-center business to run his grandparents’ orchard, it stirs up gossip—and a tempest of passions—just in time for pumpkin harvest. As Roman and Bella once again get caught up in a swirl of desire and heartache, not to mention her overprotective father’s fury, Mirror Lake will soon find out whether the Italian hometown beauty and her unforgettable Greek god can stand a second chance.

Excerpt

Just then, Bella saw a man walking toward her from across the square. She looked the other way, pretending to be fascinated by a couple of little kids kicking up leaves. Because she’d know that sweeping, confident gait, that straight-as-a-cornstalk carriage, those big, strong shoulders anywhere. And the way her limbs were going weak, the way her heart had catapulted into her stomach like a basketball and her breaths were coming raggedly, her body knew it, too. All that told her that the man striding quickly toward her was no surfer guy. It was Roman.

She glanced up to find him standing there, wearing jeans and a black sweater. Looking like sin, as usual.

“Oh, it’s you,” she said, trying to sound disappointed, but she couldn’t help smiling a little. “I’m expecting my big, burly, blond Swedish date.” When she showed him the photo on her phone, his response was an emphatic grunt.

He sat next to her on the bench, his leg grazing hers unapologetically. He smelled like woodsy cologne and shaving cream, and it was making her giddy. Like he’d just had a shower and was going out for the night. Maybe he was. An image of him on a date with some gorgeous woman floated through her mind. Him laughing and sipping wine with someone and caressing her hand across the table.

She pushed back that image. It made her uncomfortable. Sad. It was only a matter of time before he met someone. He was too good looking, too funny, too chivalrous. Too everything.

His leg touched hers again, but he didn’t say anything, like excuse me or oops. It seemed . . . intentional. Yet he sat there, focused on watching the sun sink over those gorgeous trees, that New England autumn post-card view . . .

She couldn’t take it anymore. She moved away into her own personal space. “Oh, for the love of God, what are you doing here?”

He sat up a little straighter. Eyeballed her in a way that confused her . . . he seemed hesitant, very unlike him, who usually said what he meant and didn’t play games. Finally he spoke. “Your date’s not showing tonight.”

“Oh.” Great. Apparently she was being stood up based on appearance only, since Jess had told her she’d e-mailed her date a photo. That was confidence inspiring. And worse was that Roman knew she was being stood up. Not only knew but came bearing the news. Wait a minute . . . She stopped in the middle of gathering up her purse. “How do you know that?”

He leaned forward on the bench, resting his elbows on his legs, tapping his fingers together. “Trust me, he’s not your type.”

“You interfered with my date? How could you? I thought we talked about this.”

Roman sighed heavily. He turned toward her and spoke. “Your date’s not showing because he doesn’t exist.”

Her heart skipped a beat. Or two. “Did you annihilate him?”

“No, I made him up. I gave Jess a stock photo to show you.”

“To play a joke on me?” Why would he do that? Her throat felt lumpy. Through everything, she thought at least they were friends. “That is the lowest—”

He grabbed her by the shoulders. “Bella,” he said and shook her a little. “Look at me.”

She did, through narrowed eyes. When she saw his face, all the fight whooshed right out of her, like a balloon let loose before it’s tied. There was something different about him tonight. A graveness. The way he looked at her was just different, like he was not joking or being sarcastic. In fact, he looked dead serious, those big brown eyes staring right at her, those long, lovely lashes looking sinfully angelic on such a gorgeous hunk of man.

“I did it because I want to be your date for tonight.” She must have still looked confused, because he said, “I knew you’d never agree to it the regular way.”

All Bella’s critical body parts were humming. She was filled with elation, with hope. Maybe it was wine or desperation or the upcoming birthday, she didn’t know. But she had the distinct feeling she was about to do something reckless, and like it.

She must’ve looked dumbstruck because he repeated, “I want to take you on a date.”

“Take me on a date?” she echoed. A bright bulb, she was indeed.

“Yeah, you know”—he pointed back and forth between the two of them—“go out together, you and me. Tonight.”

“I’m not so sure that’s a good idea. Our history, you know.” Their history was a mess, and they both knew it.

“Right, right,” he said, pretending to contemplate that. “But still.”

But still what? “Why me?” she asked. It came out sounding very quiet and clogged, because she was having difficulty getting the words out.

“I think you know why.” His eyes dropped to her lips. Her stomach dropped to her feet. Oh God.

Date him? That would be foolish. Do him? Even worse. To her horror she realized she wanted to. A lot.

Spotlight: Energize Your Life by Del Millers

Summary

Are you suffering from a personal energy crisis? Are you constantly running through your day, feeling chronically exhausted? Are you desperately overcommitted? Do you find yourself sacrificing your health, family time and quality of life just to meet the never-ending demands on your time? Are you exhausted when you go to bed at night and still tired when you awake? If the answer is yes to any of the above questions, then you may be suffering from a personal energy crisis.

Unfortunately, this way of living — and working — not only robs us of our health and puts a strain on time and energy resources, it blocks our access to our most essential sources of energy, leaving us feeling physically, mentally, and emotionally drained.

In his new book, Energize Your Life, Dr. Del shows you simple things you can do everyday to fuel your life and work with positive energy. Drawing from his years of experience consulting with executives, entrepreneurs, small business owners, career changers and self re-inventors, as well as the wealth of new research over the past two decades on positive psychology, employee engagement and play, Dr. Del demonstrates how you can program the brain — and the subconscious — for productive, beneficial action.

Energize Your Life is different from other positive energy books and personal energy management programs. Its unique advantage is that it shows you how to fuel your life and work with positive energy from seven distinct sources.

And why is it important to increase your daily dose of positive energy? Well, several studies have clearly demonstrated that chronic stress and negative energy shuts down the creative problem solving brain, slows your productivity and puts you in fight or flight mode where very little gets done.

Energize Your Life will challenge and inspire you to develop a personal action plan to fuel your life and work with positive energy everyday. Thereby, improving your personal well being, enhancing your work engagement, and helping you feel more alive.

Chapter 5: Become a Conduit for Positive Energy

“Positive energy attracts.  Negative energy repels.” – Del Millers

Pillar #4: Positive Energy

It was December 2013, and I was flying home to Los Angeles from Charlotte, NC via Chicago O’Hare airport.  Unfortunately, flying through Chicago in the winter during bad weather automatically spells delays and canceled flights.  And that was exactly the case.  The flight that was supposed to leave before mine from Chicago to Los Angeles was canceled.  And so was mine.

Imagine being one of those American Airline attendants that night trying his or her best to accommodate 300 angry, stranded passengers.

But, as I stood in line that night waiting my turn to talk to the attendant, I made a radical decision to adopt a positive outlook about my situation.  I had every right to be as pissed off as everybody else in that terminal, but I chose instead to focus on one thought to the exclusion of all others:  “I am on the next flight to Los Angeles.”

I kept repeating that one single thought in my head over and over again with a single mindedness of purpose.  I would also look at the attendant every so often and send her a silent message — “you’ve got a seat for me on that next plane, I know it.”

By the time I reached the counter, I was told that the next flight was fully booked.  I looked at the attendant with a smile and said, “rough night isn’t it, Nancy?”

“You have no idea,” she replied with a sigh.

Then with a smile I said “Nancy, I know you’re probably all booked up, but I’ve got an event in Los Angeles tomorrow and I’m the keynote speaker, so I would be forever grateful if you could somehow get me on the next flight out tonight.”

She said, “Mr. Millers we’re all booked up, but please have a seat and I will see what I can do.”

Fifteen minutes later, I was standing in line with a boarding pass in hand, waiting to board my flight to Los Angeles.

Yes, I know the pessimists would say that I just got lucky.  But did I?

Or did I create the right conditions that led the universe to conspire in my favor?

The truth is, I don’t know.  All I know is that I was sitting on the next flight home while most of the angry people were on their way to a hotel for the night.

Here’s what I do know for sure.

My positive optimistic attitude allowed me to stop thinking about myself long enough to empathize with Nancy’s situation.  When I said to Nancy, “rough night, isn’t it?”  I genuinely meant it, and she felt that.

Here’s something else I do know for sure.

When you go out of your way to put yourself in the other person’s shoes and see things from their perspective, it often creates a win-win situation.  You’ll find that most people will go out of THEIR way to accommodate your needs.

Now, I don’t know what exactly Nancy did that night to get me a seat on that last flight out of Chicago to Los Angeles, but I’m certain she went out of her way to accommodate me.

Why would she do that?

Positive energy attracts positive results and people to you.  Negative energy repels.

There’s a lot of negativity in the world.  We are surrounded by it.  It’s inescapable.  You hear about it every time you turn on the television.  It’s thrown in your face when you walk out the door and have to listen to your neighbor complaining about how much he hates his dead end job. Again!

The world is filled with negative energy because it boosts television ratings and helps to sell newspapers and magazines.  Negative energy is controversial, provocative, and confrontational.  Just watch an episode of most Reality TV and you’ll see what I mean.

Positive energy, on the other hand, is subtle, purposeful, and uplifting.  It’s the kind of energy that gives you the momentum you need to move in the direction of a larger vision for your life.

Positive energy is like a magnet.  It attracts positive people and positive results into your life.

But how can you become a conduit for positive energy in a world obsessed with sensationalism, controversy, and fear?

You cultivate positive energy by taking positive actions every day.  Or as Jon Gordon puts it in his book, The Energy Bus, you must “feed positive dog:”

A man goes to the village to visit the wise man and he says to

the wise man, “I feel like there are two dogs inside me. One dog is

positive, loving, kind, and gentle dog and then I have this angry, mean-spirited and negative dog and they fight all the time. I don’t know

which is going to win.” The wise man thinks for a moment and he says,

“I know which is going to win. The one you feed the most, so feed

positive dog.”

Katie agrees to babysit, if Vance allows the film crew access to his property. Vance agrees to keep an open mind for the peace he needs to write.

But having Katie underfoot is anything but peaceful. And Vance is finding less and less time to write and more and more time to watch Katie weave a lovely spell on all the Kerners...especially him.

Can these two opposites find a common ground and the love they both deserve?

Excerpt

“Hey, there. You ain’t from around here, are ya’? I’m Clancy Perry.” Clancy stuck his hand out and Vance immediately hated the glint in his eyes.

“Katie McKnight.” She shook Clancy’s hand.

“You from Hollywood?”

“Santa Monica, technically––”

“Well, Katie McKnight…I’m your man.” Clancy ambled closer to Katie, blocking Vance with his back. “And I’d like to audition for any and all love scenes. Especially if I get to make love to Carrie Underwood or Brooklyn Decker.”

“Oh, well––” Her unease was visible as she glanced at Vance.

“You don’t have to pay me or nothing. I’d do it for free. As long as the actress is smokin’ hot.” Clancy inched closer to Katie.

“Welcome to Harmony,” Vance said to Katie’s surprised or alarmed face (either would be fitting). He clapped Clancy on the shoulder over his worn Skoal T-shirt. “Look, go tell everyone not to stop by because there’s not going to be any movie. Got it?”

“That ain’t what I heard––”

“You’re hearing it now.” Clancy got that belligerent look on his face and was about to say something really stupid when Katie hooked her arm through his and steered him toward the door.

“Mr. Perry, as soon as Mr. Kerner and I have ironed out all the details, I will personally let you know if there any parts in the miniseries suited for you,” she said to a goofy-smiling Clancy. “Thank you for stopping by and informing me of your availability.”

Clancy shuffled his dirty cowboy boots on the wood floor. “Sure thang. Maybe you and me can talk over beers”––he made a suggestive leer with his tobacco-stained teeth–– “You ever ridden on the back of an ATV––”

“She’s not available.” Vance cut in as he tried shoving Clancy out the door.

“How do you know?” Clancy dug his booted heels in, halting Vance from slamming the door in his face. “You ain’t her boyfriend, you douche bag.”

“Yes, I am. Now get the hell out of here,” he snarled in Clancy’s stupefied face. “And make sure you tell your brother Clinton, too.” Vance slammed the door so hard it rattled the frame.

Katie stood with crossed arms. Pointing a finger at her disapproving face, he said, “Don’t give me that look. I did you a huge favor. Clancy and his brother Clinton are two characters you want to avoid. They don’t run on all four cylinders. They trim trees for a living and have fallen out of more than I can count, which explains the brain damage.”

Katie took an aggressive step forward. “I don’t care about Clancy. You promised to listen to my proposal with an open mind. And now you’re saying no before I’ve had a chance to explain.” A wrinkle creased her brow directly below her widow’s peak. “And I’m not your girlfriend, you…you butthurt!”

Unable to form a coherent thought, his pulse quickened as he stared at Katie’s flustered face and heaving chest beneath her oversized sweatshirt. “Did you just call me butthurt?”

“Yeah. And I meant it.” Katie whirled around and stormed away. “I’m outta here. But I’m coming back tomorrow to present my proposal and you’re gonna listen.”
