About the Author

Dayna Quince was only fourteen when she developed a serious addiction to romance novels. What began as an innocent desire to read became an all-out obsession with the romance genre. She gave book reports on romance novels, got in trouble for reading during lectures, and would rather spend her time reading than attending high school parties. After all, high school boys could not compete with the likes of Stephanie Laurens Devil Cynster. After getting her first job, her addiction only got worse. She now had her own money to spend and a car to get to Barnes and Noble as frequently as she wanted. She managed to maintain a somewhat normal life, marrying her high school boyfriend who was aware he was competing with fictional men for her attention. Dayna soon began writing her own romance novels, inspired by her love for all things romance. Dayna and her husband live in Southern California with their two children and three fur babies. Dayna is happiest at home where she can be with her family and write to her heart’s content.

Excerpt

“I feel like I’m always pissing you off,” Delilah said, as they made their way to the end of the row of conveyor belts. “I just hate not knowing what you’re thinking.”

He reached around her to hold the door open, and then they started down a long hallway. “I’m thinking that I don’t have time to drive you around town.”

“You just said—”

He stopped, bracing his hands against the wall, caging her in. “I’m thinking about Freefest, and how important it is that I get my head on right, that I focus and visualize and do all the things I need to do so I don’t die on that mountain.”

God, that look. So intense. Electrifying. “I don’t want to be a burden. I can get around by myself.”

But he didn’t look at her like he was pissed or annoyed. No, with his nostrils flaring like that, he looked like he wanted to use both hands to rip her dress wide open and drop his face in her cleavage. And she wasn’t entirely sure she’d stop him.

Her pulse fluttered out of control, and desire streamed through her.

He lowered his mouth to her ear, his voice deep and husky. “But it doesn’t seem to matter what I’m thinking, because it doesn’t stop my heart from feeling funny when I watch you talking about produce with a dude wearing toe shoes. It doesn’t keep me from realizing that I’ve known a lot of women in my life but none of them—until you—has ever surprised me. It doesn’t seem to matter that I’m really good—and I mean expert level—at blocking out distractions and staying focused because, somehow, you’ve tangled up my wiring. I’m supposed to be thinking about my thrust or my amplitude or page thirty-six in How to Raise Your Orphan Sister, but I can’t concentrate because you keep getting under my skin, and there’s not a damn thing I can do about it.”

His chest was right there—close, but not touching. His mouth, a whisper away, and her body yearned for him to close the last inch of distance between them.

“I can’t stop from breaking into a run every afternoon, so I can get home to you,” Will said. “I hold my breath because I want to open the door and find you in the kitchen and when you’re not there I hate it. I could easily hire some high school or college kid to drive you around this summer. Maybe get you a scooter—anything so that I don’t have to do it, but I will be damned if I let someone else be the one to take you places. That’s for me. That’s my gift.”

Every cell in her body opened up and started singing and clapping to a gospel tune. But she was in a hallway, and the farm owner was waiting for her. “Well, that must be very inconvenient for a man like you.”

He smiled, and it was like a bright yellow dandelion pushing up through a crack in the cement. It floored her. “You have no idea.”

“If it helps, you’re not my type.”

He stepped close enough that his body brushed hers, and she could smell the sun in his cotton T-shirt and the fresh mountain air scent of him that drove her wild. “No?”

“Not at all. You’re too disciplined. Too…tidy.”

“Would it help if I…” He brought both hands to his head and messed up his hair.

She laughed because it was short enough that it couldn’t really get messed up. “A little.”

“How about if I got some ink. Like maybe a sunburst right here.” He brought her hand to his chest, just slightly off-center.

“And ruin that perfect skin?” She shook her head. “Besides, it wouldn’t matter what you did. I like a man who can surprise me. Not someone so regimented that I can predict—”

His strong arm wrapped around her back, and he hauled her to him, pressing his warm, soft mouth on top of hers. And then he kissed her.

It was so good, so unexpected, that she practically soared right out of her body. Her pulse quickened, and she had to squeeze her hands into fists to keep from scraping them through his hair.

I could fall so hard for this man.

He parted his lips, and the way he licked across her bottom one had her drawing in a sharp breath as pleasure bloomed across her skin. He took advantage of her surprise by sweeping his tongue into her mouth, tilting his head, and kissing her like the clock was ticking, and he’d never get this chance again.

Sensation flooded her, making her nerves hum and her knees go weak.

“Okay, once more from the top.” John counted off before playing the introduction to a new song.

Justin counted the beats in his head and looked up from his guitar. They were rehearsing in the legendary Abbey Road Studios. It was a spacious studio with honey-colored hardwood floors set in a herringbone pattern, with upholstered walls covered in reds and golds.

After a few bars of the acoustic guitar and piano, Justin sang a song he wrote for Lucy. Inspired by a dream he had after leaving California, it was the most romantic song he had ever written.

He lost himself in the music while playing his guitar and singing. He and Lucy watched a sunset turn into a deep indigo night sky as he shared his feelings for her. He had this dream the day after he left California and it had shaken him to his core. But unlike his earlier dreams of violence and the need to protect her from harm, this dream was more realistic than any of the others.

Justin closed his eyes, focusing on the lyrics about holding Lucy in his arms. His dreams had always been highly realistic, but this recent dream was more like a memory. It stimulated all his senses. He could not only feel Lucy in his arms, he heard the sound of male voices singing in the background and the sounds of a city below, as if they were on top of a building somewhere. The air was warm and full of exotic scents that he couldn’t identify. He shuddered as this familiarity washed over him. It was impossible. He had never shared a night like that with Lucy. As the song ended, he was exhausted and miserable.

“That was marvelous,” Graham said from the recording booth. “Let’s wrap it up for tonight. I’m feeling generous, so let me take everyone to the pub.” It was no surprise Graham was in a great mood tonight. He didn’t like the scandal that surrounded Justin, but he was delighted with the publicity that created renewed interest in Indigo. Tickets for the three concerts had sold out, and Indigo’s back catalog was selling well.

“Excellent.” John stood up from the piano and closed the fallboard over the keys. “I’m completely knackered. I could use a pint or two.”

Justin remained on his stool, pulling the guitar strap from around his shoulder.

“Are you all right?” John asked, gathering up his sheet music and placing it in a carrier bag.

“Yeah,” Justin muttered, rubbing his eyes.

Indigo’s other band members, Colin, Mike, and Liam, were gathered in the recording booth listening to the playback. Justin could just make out the song’s melody as it came through the slightly open door.

John frowned. “You looked like you’ve seen a ghost.”

I slowed down as I turned off the main highway.

I pulled onto the rough road to the small cabin on the property. There were enough bunk beds in the rustic structure for everybody, but students had the option of pitching tents or building their own shelters if they chose.

After I parked my Jeep, I unloaded some supplies and checked out the cabin. Although I encouraged foraging and trapping, I always made sure to have enough basic food so students didn’t starve.

I sat on the wooden steps and took a deep breath, relaxing to the sounds of the birds and the feel of a light breeze that caressed my skin.

I opened the book I’d brought along, the latest from my favorite erotic romance writer. The reading material was one of my secret pleasures, maybe because I’d never been overwhelmed by lust for any man, but I loved to read about the possibility.

I was mostly a realist, but I loved the fantasy of some hot guy sweeping me off my feet.

Other than a boyfriend in college who had used me to help him get his degree and then disappeared after graduation without a word, I’d never been in a sexual relationship.

Honestly, my ex hadn’t exactly rocked my world. But I liked to think that love and lust existed.

Brooke had always accused me of being a closet romantic. And maybe she was right. As a scientist, believing in soulmates, love, and unbridled lust didn’t make much sense. But I couldn’t stop myself from wanting to believe it was real anyway.

It had happened for my twin, and Brooke deserved the love she had with Liam. Her capacity to care about other people was endless.

A sigh escaped from my mouth as I started reading the scene I’d left off on the last time I’d picked up the book.

It was hot.

It was sensual.

And even though the male hero was an obnoxious alpha sometimes, I adored the way he wanted to give his woman everything and protect her from anything bad in the world, and how incredibly devoted he was to the woman he loved.

“Hello, Jade,” a smooth baritone said from above me, the deep voice startling me so much I instinctively slammed the book closed.

Even though I loved steamy romance, I didn’t exactly broadcast it, except to my friends who read the same type of books.

Unfortunately, I’d gotten so lost in the hot fairy tale that I obviously hadn’t heard my first student arrive.

I shaded my eyes and looked up, curious because the voice was familiar, but I was pretty sure that since I lusted after Eli Stone, I was hearing that whiskey-smooth baritone voice only in my imagination.

My heart skittered as I focused in on the face belonging to the sexy male voice.

It was Eli Stone, and I gaped at him like an idiot because I couldn’t seem to reconcile him and being out in the middle of nowhere.

I scrambled to my feet, feeling at a disadvantage because I was so far below him. But the position change didn’t help all that much. I was average height, and Eli Stone was all muscle—broad, tall, and pretty damn intimidating, even though he was casually dressed in jeans, a T-shirt that only showed how ripped he was, and a pair of hiking boots.

For just a moment, my eyes were drawn to the dark scrolls and sharp angles of the tribal tattoo that covered his left arm, ending at his wrist. The markings were a stark black against his tanned skin, and the ferociousness of the design left me speechless.

I wasn’t into tats, and I’d seen Eli’s in images many times, but there was something about those markings that made my heart lodge in my throat. They were fierce, but for some reason they only made me feel . . . sadness.

“What are you doing here?” I finally asked hesitantly as my gaze went back to his face.

He folded his muscular arms in front of him as he answered, “You didn’t seem to want to come to me, so I’m coming to you. I’m your student for the next thirty-two hours or so, Jade.”

I might not have been fond of Eli Stone, but his presence was still a little bit overwhelming.

Okay, maybe more than a little bit.

It had been so long since I’d seen Eli in person that I’d started to tell myself that I’d overestimated the tension that had flowed between us in his office.

But I really hadn’t.

My body was taut just from being in close proximity to him, and the hypervigilant awareness I felt when I looked at him was very, very real.

The feelings were so powerful that I couldn’t focus on anything else but him.

I didn’t understand it.

But I was truly experiencing it.

The same awkward, potent attraction I’d fought in his office months ago.

I swallowed hard, my brain working to figure out exactly how I could get rid of Eli Stone before I made a complete and total fool of myself.

Spotlight: Legacy of Lies by Tara Leigh

Money. Status. Wealth. Power.

My legacy.

Jolie Chapman.

My love.

All of it—an elaborate illusion.

I was heir to a throne built on lies, my crown forged from corruption.

Stripped of everything I'd been raised to consider my birthright.

Including my princess—who wasn’t mine, after all.

I’ve spent the past decade rebuilding my life, on my own terms.

Now I’ve returned to Manhattan for redemption, too.

Jolie wasn’t supposed to be here.

. . . And I wasn’t supposed to care.

Screw me once, shame on you. Screw me twice—

Who am I kidding? I don’t believe in second chances anymore.
