Spotlight: Deaf Row by Ron Franscell

Genre: Mystery, Thriller, Crime Fiction

Retired from a big-city homicide beat to a small Colorado mountain town, ex-detective Woodrow "Mountain" Bell yearns only to fade away. He's failed in so many ways as a father, a husband, friend, and cop that it might be too late for a meaningful life. When he stumbles across a long-forgotten, unsolved child murder, his first impulse is to let it lie ... but he can't. He's drawn into the macabre mystery when he realizes the killer might still be near. Without help from ambivalent local cops, Bell must overcome the obstacles of time, age, and a lack of police resources by calling upon the unique skills of the end-of-the-road codgers he meets for coffee every morning—a club of old guys who call themselves Deaf Row. Soon, this mottled crew finds itself on a collision course with a serial butcher.

DEAF ROW is more than a tense mystery novel, more than an unnerving psychological thriller drawn from Ron Franscell's career as a bestselling true-crime writer and journalist. It is also a novel of men pushing back against time and death, trying not to disappear entirely. DEAF ROW is a moving, occasionally humorous, portrait of flawed people caught in a web of pain and regret. And although you might think you know where this ghastly case is headed, the climax will blindside you.

from CHAPTER 2

A sign in the window read, “Tommyknockers Diner … Wireless Since 1899.”

As usual, Bell arrived late on that chilly Monday morning, a freckle past seven. He’d stayed awake late, haunted by Luther Nelson and the unsettling scene at the Old Miners Home. Now, he craved steak and eggs—and answers.

“You’re late, Woodrow,” said Cotton Minahan, the old fire chief. “Day’s damn near done. We’re all morning people here.”

Bell growled as he sloughed off his heavy leather coat and draped it over his usual chair beside Father Bert.

“Yeah, well, I hate morning people,” Bell grumbled. “And mornings. And people.”

The morning began, as it did any day Father Bert was there, with a blessing. Frankly, it always pushed the limits of priestly propriety. Most Catholics believe a prayer is a direct and intimate conversation with God, and the person praying—particularly if he’s a priest—must show the appropriate respect for the Almighty. Humor is taboo. But Father Bert Clancy, who had a history of nonconformity that the Archbishop privately might have called “blurry blasphemy,” tended to include his secular friends and their foibles in his conversations. The Pope wouldn’t approve, but the Pope didn’t live in Midnight.

So, the old priest crossed himself and bowed his head:

“God, please grant us the senility to forget the people who never liked us, the good fortune to run into the ones who did, and the eyesight to tell the difference. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.”

Deaf Row’s non-Catholics waved their fingers wildly across their chests like spastics. Some of the guys had been there since Fancy O’Neil, the waitress, put the first pot of coffee on at six a.m. Hell, they competed fiercely to be the first one at the door when it was unlocked. To a bunch of old guys who no longer noticed they were no longer noticed, being first at anything was a monumental triumph. Old men settle for small victories.

They called themselves Deaf Row. They were an irregular crew of old men who held fast to the little-boy tradition of naming their club, which, in this case, was just a small-town coffee klatsch.

On any given morning (except Sunday) seven or eight old guys gathered at a table in Tommyknockers’ front window to fabulate, debate and cuss about all the things that occupy old men: death, politics, colonoscopies, guns, women, cars, sex, loss, the senselessness of designer coffee, mortality, how time moves more quickly now, Viagra, missed opportunities in life, prostates, the diverse flavors of Metamucil, and fishing. Or something really deep and important, such as the relative stamina of car batteries, which might be a metaphor for what keeps old men alive when they don’t really want to talk about what keeps old men alive.

These were the kind of guys who never once wore cufflinks. Most struggled with the pervasive notion that nobody in a small town ever did much worth doing. Their little lives in their little town left little mark.

So when Bell arrived, the regular crew, minus Doc William Frederick Ely, was there. “Bones”—as everyone called him—was a retired GP who’d doctored Midnight for more than fifty years and bragged about circumcising every mayor since 1979. The table was already steaming through its regular fourth pot and arguing its regular nonsense. Today, that happened to be an argument over the fragility of mountains.

“Them are real mountains,” said Minahan, who “retired” shortly after he was ticketed for drunk fire-truck racing. He pointed at an Alaska 1998 calendar that had never been taken down from Tommyknockers’ cluttered wall for more than twenty years. But when he wasn’t being a smartass, he was a dumbass.

“They look all sharp and wild,” Minahan insisted. “Not like these pussy mountains in Colorado. People have wore ’em down.”

Dan Coogan snorted. He was the retired editor of the town’s weekly newspaper, the semi-conscious Midnight Sun, where he still wrote a local history column every week. He also had only one vocal cord and sounded a lot like Andy Devine when he talked.

“People don’t wear down mountains!”

The obstinate Cotton Minahan dug in.

“Well, in the old days they did!”

“Minahan, you’re the most unnecessary genius in the world,” Coogan squeaked back. “You’re the Einstein of total unnecessariness. It’s high time the world celebrated you.”

Spotlight: Wilder at Last by Serena Bell

(Wilder Adventures, #5)
Publication date: February 7th 2023
Genres: Adult, Comedy, Contemporary, Romance

Synopsis:

Falling in love with my frenemy? Out of the question.

Easton: For as long as I can remember, I’ve been giving Hanna a hard time—and she’s been giving it right back. So we’re both shocked to find ourselves on the same side of a project: helping Hanna win the heart of the celebrity chef hired by my family’s business to give summer workshops.

It shouldn’t be a big deal. A wardrobe evaluation. A shopping trip. Maybe some how-to-get-the-guy advice. I’m an expert on matters of the heart—or, at least matters of the mattress.

But as Hanna starts to trust me and open up, I see her differently. She’s not so much blunt as refreshingly honest, not so much a plain Jane in baggy clothes as… deliciously curvy. And hidden under that spiky, steely exterior is a soft heart she doesn’t show anyone.

Suddenly, the project includes ogling Hanna in dressing room mirrors. Offering her kissing lessons. And desperately trying not to give in to the sizzling heat between us.

I have to let her know the plan has changed: I’ll still help her get the guy she wants. I just need to somehow convince her that it’s me.

A steamy, opposites-attract, enemies-to-lovers (or is it friends-to-lovers? So hard to tell with these two!), mountain man small-town rom com.

Excerpt

Shopping with Easton turns out to be far different from what I was expecting.

I had pictured him leaning against the wall with a bored expression on his face, grudgingly passing judgment on me, my body, and fashion choices in an effort to keep me from ratting him out to Gabe.

Instead, I’ve discovered that what Easton means by “I hate shopping” is very different from what I mean.

“Too big,” he says, shaking his head when I show him the first outfit. “You need at least one size smaller.”

“This is my size.”

He shakes his head. “Stay right there.”

He’s back a minute or two later with smaller sizes. “And I found this, too,” he says. “The shirt looks like something you’d like, and these leggings were with it, so I grabbed them.” He surveys the clothes already hanging in the dressing room. “That tank top will work,” he says, pointing.

He yanks the curtain closed between us, dismissing me before I can object.

“Hidden talents,” I call to him. “Do your brothers know?”

“They know I can dress myself, unlike certain other Wilder brothers, who never wear anything except base layers, wool sweaters, and hiking pants.”

It’s true that Easton is the snappiest dresser—well, the only dresser who could reasonably be categorized as snappy—in the Wilder crew. Unlike his brothers, when he’s off duty, he usually wears jeans and a button-down. While theoretically I don’t give a shit what Easton wears, I have once or twice noticed that his clothes flatter his frame.

And he definitely has a knack for choosing jeans that draw attention to his ass…ets.

Needless to say, I would never tell him this, because it would give him a big(ger) head.

I try on the outfit that Easton picked out. It’s a pair of dusty-rose yoga pants and a black tank top. They’re much more form-fitting than anything else I’ve chosen. Part of me wants to pull them off instead of showing Easton, but the whole point of this enterprise is to get things that aren’t baggy, right?

And I don’t give a crap what Easton thinks, anyway.

I sweep the curtains open.

“Do you think he wants to see this much of me? Does anyone want to see this much of me?”

Although in truth, I’m fascinated by how I look. Round, curvy, and real.

I kind of can’t take my eyes off myself. Look at me, people!

Look at me, Bear Warden! I dare you to look away.

If I’d known how awesome ridiculously expensive clothes could be, I would have spent more money on them sooner.

I twirl in front of the mirror, assessing, then look up to find Easton’s eyes on my reflection.

“The whole world definitely wants to see that much of you.”

His voice sounds just-woken-up rough, and he clears his throat.

I tip my head, trying to gauge if he’s teasing or not, but my Easton mockery radar doesn’t blip. I think he’s just being charming, because Easton is extremely good at that. He basically can’t help himself, which is why he almost got beaten up by Gabe when Lucy first came on the scene and by Kane when Mari did.

“Try that purple thing with it,” he says, pointing to a drapey purple thing.

I do. It’s basically like a baggy sweatshirt, except somehow… hotter. It’s tight in the arms and exposes my collarbones and everything from the belly button down.

I look good.

Easton’s eyes snag mine in the mirror, then fall away before I can think about that too much.

“Okay,” I say, turning to face him. “I’m going to wear this on Monday, and then I’m going to—what? What am I going to do? Trip and fall in his lap? Ask him if he wants to get naked with me on the next hike?”

The corner of Easton’s mouth turns up. “There might be a subtler first step,” he allows.

“Right, this is why you’re helping me! I need strategy. I look superhot, he stares at me longingly, and then… I…?” I open my palms.

“Ask him out.”

“To…?”

Easton mulls this. “Drinks? Dinner? A hike? Could be anything.”

“This is all assuming that the outfit does its job,” I say.

“That outfit…”

His eyes rake over me, and I brace for at best neutral appraisal, at worst judgment, but I get neither. Instead, his gaze warms with approval, clinging to my curves, setting off a blaze of liquid heat in my body. My body stretches and purrs like a kitten under his regard.

Whoa.

Spotlight: Risk of a Lifetime by Claudia Shelton

Publication date: February 7th 2023
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Synopsis:

JB hadn’t been an angel the past few years. And he sure hadn’t counted on being his ex-wife’s protector.

From the moment FBI agent JB Bradley returns to his hometown, he’s tossed into one life-threatening situation after another. All aimed at his ex-wife Marcy. Further complicating matters, their attraction is just as strong as ever.

Marcy’s scared. Her career in marriage counseling has had some dangerous moments, but never anything like robberies, bombs or being shot. She’s even more afraid that JB will discover the truth about their marriage and the divorce papers.

JB can’t wait for another attack on Marcy. He’s made the two of them an escape plan. One where he controls the time and the trail through the woods he grew up hiking. Marcy won’t like the setting, but together they’ll make the cold winter run. Hopefully, the villain will take the bait.

Excerpt

JB wondered what the hell had just transpired with the doctor, but some things weren’t his business. One thing for sure, though, he didn’t plan to leave town until the robbery and shooting were well on their way to being solved. Even if it meant staying around longer than he’d planned.

That would give him time to consider which job to take next. The police department he’d applied to in Texas? Or the covert ops he’d been asked to be a part of a few months back? Both thought he was good enough. Both wanted him. And both locations would keep him away from Crayton...and the only woman who’d ever made him smile morning and night.

Only Marcy hadn’t been strong enough to let go of her father’s death and face the fact JB’s job would always be in law enforcement. Too bad they hadn’t realized the fact before they were married. Would have saved a lot of heartbreak on both sides.

“Where’s Marcy?” he asked.

The doctor grabbed the forms and headed down the hall. “They should be rolling her into surgery about now.”

JB charged past him. Past the nurses’ station. Past Truman, Marcy’s stepfather. Past a waiting room full of familiar faces. He had to see Marcy, touch her. Later, if she didn’t remember him being there, that would be okay. He’d know. He could live with knowing. She might not be his wife but keeping her alive and well was his top priority the next few days.

A gurney edged out of her hospital room.

“Hold up!” JB shouted to the orderly.

Grasping her hand, his breaths came ragged—and not from the short sprint down the hall—as he stroked wisps of hair from her forehead. Damn, even the antiseptic smell of the hospital couldn’t cover the remembered scent of her jasmine shampoo.

He leaned in close. “How you doing, sugar?”

“I’m cold.” Her eyes fluttered open. “It hurts. A lot.”

“Doc Crowley’s going to fix that.”

The orderly tried to move the gurney forward, but JB braced it in place with his body. His lips brushed her temple. “Oh, Marcy. Marcy, Marcy, Marcy.”

“JB.” She opened her eyes full force. “Why’d you leave?”

Give her the truth. Tell her how much her words made you feel you weren’t good enough for her. How you couldn’t stand to see her frightened for you every day you left for work as a lawman. Or that you needed to prove something to yourself.

No. This wasn’t the time or place. Maybe it never would be.

“Because you let me go.” He swallowed hard then brushed a kiss across her forehead. “Don’t forget you’re the one who locked me out.”

Her eyes closed and her breathing weakened.

“Why’d you send the divorce papers?” He needed her answer. Needed to know what or who had taken his place.

“I figured you’d get mad and come back...and we’d be like before.” She loosened the hold on his hand. “Didn’t work. You never came back.”

Like before? They’d been young and naive. Not anymore. He’d developed an edge that went with the job. One she’d never be able to understand. And her? From the letters Sadie sent him, Marcy had regrouped and moved forward. But she’d still never left Crayton except to go to college.

Like before? Nothing could ever be like before.

A nurse opened the doors to surgery, and the orderly pushed Marcy into the cool hallway. The doors slowly closed back into place.

He braced his head against the doorframe. A whole lot had happened in the last eight hours since he drove back into Crayton. One hell of a lot.

Jenny Jacobson, age 82

Our dear Jenny went to be with the High and Mighty yesterday at 4 p.m. She wasn’t upset about dying. As she told this reporter during a chance encounter at a coffee shop, “This lady has gotten her work done and you can only lounge in the sun so long before the sand in your crack becomes unbearable.”

Jenny was born in Wallyville. Her folks were out shopping for a new car that day and lost track of time. She barely outlived her mother, who died at the age of 103 a week ago last Thursday, after finding a big spider’s nest in her bathtub.

Most of Jenny’s life was spent giving to others. After graduating with a teaching degree, she moved to Canada where she taught English and P.E. for twenty-five years. Upon retirement, she decided to move back to Sandy Salts to open a secondhand goods and firsthand ice cream store, called D’ Ya Want Seconds? Folks who couldn’t afford the ice cream could trade clothing or good, used appliances for a scoop. Nobody went away hungry.

She closed the place two years ago in order to fulfill her lifelong dream of traveling the world with a younger man. After finding her companion via an online ad, Jenny and Javier spent time in Spain, Greece, New Zealand, and Cancun. She died last week in the garden of her Sandy Salts home with a smile on her face
