Spotlight: Health Guardianship: The Remedy to the Sick Care System by Firouz Daneshgari

Publisher: Merack Publishing

Release Date: October 27, 2022

America’s healthcare system is the most expensive in the world, but more money hasn’t equated to better patient outcomes, explains surgeon-scientist Firouz Daneshgari. Consider this: Americans spend 300-500% more than those in Europe or Japan on healthcare, but our country consistently ranks between 30th-40th in the World Health Organization’s ratings for patient longevity, access to care and prevalence of chronic conditions. What’s worse, medical errors are the third leading cause of death in the U.S. Only heart disease and cancer claim more lives. Why are we spending so much, but getting so little?

In his new book, Health Guardianship: The Remedy to the Sick Care System, Dr. Daneshgari draws upon more than 30 years of research to offer an unflinching exploration into the systemic dysfunction caused (primarily) by America’s fee-for-service healthcare model. Procedures and surgeries generate revenue; healthy people don’t. Can our healthcare system be healed?

Daneshgari details a framework for a new healthcare paradigm that prioritizes mitigation of health risks and elimination of chronic conditions, and rewards guardianship of health, not delivery of sick care services.

He describes how this new model can be implemented using the existing primary care infrastructure, with the integration of virtual health and wellness services to make proactive, consumer-centric healthcare as convenient and affordable as shopping and banking.

Acting like a whistle blower who calls out the existing dysfunction of the system, Daneshgari offers an imminently available remedy that would create the next generation of healthcare that is accessible to all, affordable by everyone and will provide the quality desired by healthcare consumers.

✔️ A broody billionaire
✔️ A whipsmart librarian
✔️ V-card request
✔️ Opposites attract in a big way
✔️ Swoony holiday romance
✔️ Small town shenanigans

She makes the rules. I break them.

I need a vacation more than I need air. A week by myself at my family’s vacation home in Maine is perfect.

Except Jane Matthews is there. I don’t recognize her at first because the smokin’ hot woman with a librarian vibe is nothing like the Jane I remember. She’s one of my little sister’s friends, and I barely noticed her back in high school.

Now, it’s nigh impossible to ignore her. Sparks fly between us every time we’re near each other. When we get snowed in and Jane asks me a favor—a big favor—I don’t know if I can say no.

She says we just have the week. That we can’t tell anyone. That we’ll forget each other after it’s over. She’s wrong about everything.

Ian & Jane’s story is perfect for readers who love: friends to lovers, slow burn, broody billionaires, small town gossip, emotional romance with a dash of angst, plenty of swoon and all the feels, and a protective hero who never expects to fall.

*A full-length, standalone romance.

Spotlight: No Rescue Required by Maggie Kelley

Published by: Entangled: Amara
Publication date: November 14th 2022
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Sports agent Ryan Callahan’s trip is a complete disaster. Not only did he fail to sign a promising young ballplayer, but now he’s stranded in a Kentucky town no bigger than a bourbon ball. His plane’s been canceled, there’s not a cab to be found, and getting back to New York City is gonna take a miracle. Like a quirky, strawberry-blonde florist with a big van and a craving for late-night, deep-fried hotdogs…

With her best friend’s wedding and her business on the line, Sabrina Hayes needs to be in New York like yesterday. But with her flight canceled and her bank account almost as empty as her gas tank, an extra passenger might just be the long-overdue lucky charm Sabrina needs…especially now that she knows he’s definitely not a serial killer disguised as a scrumptious Thor look-alike.

Somewhere between a roadside stand that serves food as fast as it serves weddings, a motel room haunted by a lovesick ghost, and a car race known as the Snowball 500, Sabrina and Ryan are about to discover that anything that can go wrong will go hilariously wrong. But even they are not prepared for what’s in store on the road ahead…

Excerpt

She turned on the blinker to merge, and having wrapped up his issue, Ryan slipped the phone into the center console, arranging it so she could see the directions on the screen. The simple gesture touched her heart. Other than her gram, no one had ever looked out for her, not even in a small way, and his thoughtful courtesy reminded her how concerned he’d been talking with his sister, his impulse to look out for her, the casual way he’d said love you.

Not words she’d heard much growing up. Except for Gram. Her parents weren’t big on affection, except with one another, so she had to stock up on I love you during her Kentucky summers. Gram always said kindness was in the little things—delivering a cup of coffee in the morning, offering to make supper, bringing in the newspaper. Big gestures were nice, but the small stuff made up a person’s life.

“Hey, before I forget to tell you,” he said, “I appreciate the assist with Mason Hollis. I admit I was pretty thrown by having the door shut in my face.”

She gave him a sidelong glance. “Not a guy who’s used to rejection?”

“Not really, no.” He looked over, wearing an expression that probably made the Midtown girls melt like a Kentucky snowfall. “Most of the time, the answer I get is yes.”

“I bet.”

“I’m talking clients, not women.”

She raised one brow. “Of course you are.”

“Seriously?” A vague irritation flashed across his face.

“Truth is, I wasn’t prepared to go back to the Hollis place tonight, not after the ‘city slicker’ comment, but thanks to you, I’ve got a shot to sign Mason, an opportunity that seemed unlikely an hour ago.” He paused. “What can I say? There really is some magic in that southern charm of yours, so thank you. I owe you.”

She looked over briefly, touched by his acknowledgment. “You’re welcome.”

The inside of the cab grew quiet for a moment, neither having much to say—or, more accurately, not knowing what to say, considering they were fundamentally strangers. Ryan tapped his knuckles on the console and nodded toward the radio. “Not a bad song.”

“One of my favorites,” she said, appreciating Maren Morris’s lyrics about putting her car in drive, finding an escape. “You like country music—that’s a good sign.”

He gave her a look that said you’ve got to be kidding me. “No upstanding New Yorker likes country.”

“I can always sing along,” she said, glancing in his direction. “Convert you into a fan.”

“So, you must be a good singer?”

“No,” she laughed. “I’m like karaoke’s worst nightmare.”

“I bet you look adorable onstage, sporting cowboy boots, singing Shania.”

“I do not wear cowboy boots.” She shook her head, chuckling. “And trust me, nothing is adorable about me singing karaoke—absolutely nothing.”

His brows lifted. “So, no road-trip serenade?”

“No road-trip serenade.”

“Maybe next time.” He shot over another one of those cool-guy smiles.

Maybe next time.

Except there’d never be a next time. Apart from the fact that he liked sports and was down for karaoke, she scarcely knew the guy, and what she did know was in opposition to the low-key life she’d chosen. He was high-end cashmere and pricey gym membership, excessively work-focused and supposedly health-conscious, and not at all her speed. He was also surprising and kind in a way she hadn’t expected when he’d come into the shop.

But no—no. She tightened her grip on the wheel. This trip was nothing more than a rideshare, and thinking about his finer qualities was just a road to nowhere.

In twelve hours, Ryan Callahan would be a memory, an impossibly gorgeous guy from the city who’d stumbled into her shop on a random Friday night, a guy along for a thirteen-hour ride, down for sharing driving time and expenses.

Nothing more, nothing less.

I am reinventing myself. I’m a ME not a WE. Since I’m no longer Asshole’s fiancée, I can be anything I want to be. I could be a recovering circus performer who left the big top for big adventure. I could be a rich German heiress just waiting on wire transfers—oh wait, that’s already been done.

I could definitely be carefree and happy and not have people look at me like I’m going to crack. I can find myself again. I can be single and happy and unattached.

As we pass a group of oglers, I smile brightly and toss my hair. Instead of looking cool and collected, I am momentarily blinded by the sun and miss the small step to the ramp, pitching me forward into the crowd.

“Shit, Abby. You okay?” Jazz asks, trying, and failing, to grab my elbow.

Luckily, my fall is broken by the person in front of us.

Unluckily, my nose ends up embedded in his ass crack. I grab his thighs to keep myself from sliding down his backside. He clenches his muscles in surprise, but that only makes my face smoosh harder into his ass. I’m sucking in his khaki shorts instead of air, but if I let go, I will faceplant onto the gangway. I hold on until I can get my feet under me and pray I don’t pass out from lack of oxygen. Imagine the headline: “Jilted Woman Suffocates in Man’s Ass on Love Cruise.”

Jazz grabs my arms and helps me stand. I suck in khaki-free air.

“At least buy the man dinner first,” she quips.

The man glances over his shoulder with a frown. I give him a sheepish smile and a finger wave. “Crowds, am I right?”

He nods, lips twitching, and turns back around, putting his earbud back in his ear. The gesture and the way his dark hair falls over his forehead slams me with deja vu, but I can’t think of why. I shake off the feeling. I’m just too mired in memories today.

I can’t help but glance at his backside now that I’m at a distance to examine it. It looks damn good in the shorts he’s wearing. If I had to face plant into a butt today, I’m glad it was a nice one.

“Well, that’s one way to make an impression,” Jazz says, suppressing a laugh as we follow the slowly moving crowd up the ramp to board the ship. “I didn’t peg you for being into ass play. I guess what they say about school teachers is true.”

I roll my eyes at her. “Go on. Get it all out of your system so we never have to mention this again. Like ever.” I groan. “I’m so not good at this flirting thing. I’ll be your wingman and live vicariously through your overly friendly vagina. Just put a sock on the door if you don’t want me walking in.”

“Next please?” the woman at the check-in booth says with a forced smile. Her cheeks must hurt by the end of the day.

“Sorry,” I say, handing over my passport to her. Jazz does the same.

“Welcome aboard, Abigail Winters and Jasmine Bucolo. You will be in Sea Terrace 13090A.”

I'm looking at my room key when a deep male voice startles me. “Excuse me.”

I jump a little and turn to see the man I bumped into earlier. My face heats to match the red carpet of the entrance way.

“I’m so sorry for earlier. I don’t normally grope strangers. I tripped and—”

“It was an accident. That isn’t why I stopped you. I—uh—this is weird, but did I hear your name is Abby Winters?”

I tilt my head at him, the fog of embarrassment lifting. And holy shit. “Grayson Hamilton?”

A broad smile lights up his face, smoothing out the strong angles, and my memories start clicking into place. Grayson and my brother, Alex, dominating the soccer field in high school. Grayson and the rest of Alex’s annoying friends teasing me to no end. Grayson’s adorable, crooked smile. Grayson dominating my fevered teenaged dreams.

He holds out his hand. “Little Breezy Winters. Of all the cruise ships in all the world, you had to board this one.”

I laugh a little too loudly and take his hand. “God, no one’s called me Breezy in years. How are you, Gray?”

Besides really freaking hot. His handsome features—that I used to discretely study more than my homework…but in a not-at-all creepy way—have filled out into strong manly angles. Small lines form around his mouth and deep brown eyes when he smiles. In short, he has aged very, very yummily.

No, I scold myself. I am most definitively on a break from men.

Will Seeking Justice Lead to Her Own Demise?

A Gothic-Style Regency Romance from a Promising Young Author

Second daughter of a baron—and a little on the mischievous side—Ella Pemberton is no governess. But the pretense is a necessity if she ever wishes to get inside of Wyckhorn Manor and attain the truth. Exposing the man who killed her sister is all that matters.

Lord Sedgewick knows there’s blood on his hands. Lies have been conceived, then more lies, but the price of truth would be too great. All he has left now is his son—and his hatred. Yet as the charming governess invades his home, his safe cocoon of bitterness begins to tear away.

Could Ella, despite the lingering questions of his guilt, fall in love with such a man? Or is she falling prey to him—just as her dead sister?

Excerpt

Ella’s hands perspired beneath her elbow-length gloves, but she dared not remove them. If only the hostess would open more windows. A swim in the punch bowl was starting to sound appealing.

Dorthea did not seem to mind the heat—nor did she even seem to notice, for that matter. She appeared solely conscious of the fact that Sir Charles Rutledge’s eldest son was asking her to dance.

“Oh my.” She tilted her head, blushed to a proper degree, then allowed him to escort her into the set.

Ella hid her grin with her fan. Perhaps Miss Fitzherbert found the younger Rutledge even more riveting than his father.

“Miss, do tell me promptly that you are without partner.” A gentleman appeared before her, dumpy and short but with rather pleasing features.

“It is a bit warm, sir. I do not think I feel much like dancing.”

“I say, you’re in quite the wrong place then, are you not?” He chuckled. “We have all come to dance and make merry. I can’t think what else there could be to do.” And with a shake of his head, he bowed and walked away.

Make merry, his words echoed. Any other day, she would have taken the gentleman’s hand and eagerly danced into the night. With great pleasure, she would have strolled throughout the room, laughing and sipping lemonade to her heart’s content.

But it was not any other night, and she had no more desire for laughter than she did for lemonade or dancing.

As another song began to fill the room with a lively tune, Dorthea appeared at Ella’s side. “I came as soon as I could,” she whispered. “There he is. I have only just spotted him.” Her eyes darted to the westerly wall.

Ella could not look. Her throat constricted.

“There is one more thing I must tell you of him—news I heard only tonight. I think you shall find it most interesting.” Dorthea patted her curls as if to assure their placement. “But there is not time to relate it now. I have already promised this dance.” She turned on her heels and dashed away.

Ella was left to herself. The blood ran hot in her veins, yet still, she could not look at him. She hadn’t the strength. He had so long been a faceless monster, a shadowy demon that loomed in every nightmare, every dark corner of her soul.

Oh, Father. She clenched her hands, lifted her eyes.

There was nothing to obstruct her view, nor was there any question as to which gentleman.

Lord Sedgewick stood along the wall with the last shafts of light streaming from the window behind him. He was flesh and bone, indeed.

Dressed in tan pantaloons and waistcoat, with a black tailcoat and white cravat, his appearance was pompous and seemed to boast of his superior position. He stood in much the same manner, straight and rigid, coldly casting his gaze about the room.

His lips were firm and tight, and he appeared ready to escape the inconvenience of his present circumstance. Hair—the deepest brown—was tousled on the top and shorter on the sides. Sideburns invaded either side of his face. His brows were dark and concentrated. If he had looked upon her, she might have frozen.

Yet he never did.

A knot ascended Ella’s throat. She whirled and fled the room, escaping into the quiet, empty corridor. She covered her mouth with her hands, squeezing her eyes shut. Oh, Lucy. She shook with cold, unbearable passion.

He shall not get away with what he has done to you, Lucy. Her pulse hammered. Upon your grave, I promise.
